The Witch was technically a talking animal movie.
It checks out, but don't ever say it again.
Technically every person born is a failed abortion
😆

A new Half in the Bag on my birthday. I have never felt more loved by people who have no idea that I exist.
nivlek95 Don't worry, I won't.
***** Eeeeeeeeeeey!
NOR WOULD THEY CARE! :D
"I saw a film."
"Fuck you."
That's Half in the Bag in a nutshell.
I just always assume Mike and Jay see every single movie together.
They threaten to not feed Rich if he doesn't come along for every new Star Wars movie.
+Joe Jr. Wait...do they OWN rich or something? :/
Fools! Rich Evans is an idea. It can't be owned.
I'm conflicted; I love this comment, but I don't want to like this comment because it's stuck at 777.
@Graham Wade 37:21 is confirmation of this.
Oh thank god. Now i finally know my opinion about all these movies.
suncu91 everyone is entitled to their own ppinion
underrated comment
Yeah, saved me a lot of time also.
Whatever your thoughts are, that's my opinion, too!
No I don't even have to watch these movies. Like I don't watch any other movies and watch their show anyway like a pathetic excuse for a human being that I am.
Why is Mike laughing and smiling so much? Is he happy or something?
Max Arlestig i know right. It's fucking confusing
The one that is is susan is not mike.
CZcams started in 2005, for you to have been laughing at the comments section for seventeen years you'd have had to have broken temporal reality.
Flavourless Josephus 12 years?
Max Arlestig mike? Happy noooooooo
Robert Eggers' first two films; the Witch and the Lighthouse. That's quite an impressive start.
It’s like watching the beginnings of Kubrick
And his next film will be named The Northman! Seemingly another period piece: "Viking revenge saga set in Iceland at the turn of the 10th century."
I can't wait!
@Cynical Frenchface definitely not, there are others who were wrong as you were when it came out, but it’s now rightfully cemented as a modern horror classic.
@Cynical Frenchface aside from the technical aspect(which was objectively Well done) what makes a good horror movie is pretty subjective. I love the time piece and the whole concept of recreating a puritan fable but I can see why a lot of people wouldnt really care much for it
@Cynical Frenchface the script is one of the best parts tho, its meant to be disjointed, its meant to be like a scare story puritan moms would tell their kids to make them behave, sort of like a dark fairy tale. And thats also the whole point of thomasin, as a puritan girl she doesnt have agency. She was about to get sold ib exchange for some cows lol. Her whole character arc is getting that agency, breaking away from her family, becoming her own person. Leaving the pure but restricted stage of being a kid into the edgy world of being a teenager/young adult.
Further proof that RLM are psychics.
When talking about Robert Eggers The Witch, Mike says he really enjoyed it and then he farted a lot. He is foreshadowing Eggers next film The Lighthouse where Willem Dafoe farts a lot in the film.
You saying he spilled his beans?
Fahts
"Some people call that style over substance. I just call it filmmaking." Jesus, absolutely brutal Jay. Love it.
Brutal takedown of ‘people.’ How will they recover?
I liked Neon Demon a lot but I felt Mikes eye roll so much after that line.

10:22 It was such a sweet moment when Jay said he enjoyed "Grimsby" because it's humour made him think of Mike. Their "bromance" is truly unshakeable!

It's a little scary how many films are made but disappear so quickly that hardly anyone knows they even existed.
In the case of the Brothers Grimsby, good 👍
Thinking about all the books that go unread gives me that feeling too.
5:21 Mike just predicted The Lighthouse in his review of The Witch.
He really did lol
I didn't like the witch. The music was more annoying than atmosphere inducing. It surprises me that my friends said "if you loved It Follows (which I do) you will love the witch." I didn't like it, i wasn't scared, I didn't care about the characters.

Yay, I have friends for 53 minutes.
53 minutes and 35 seconds... Don't sell yourself short

Best 53 minutes of my life.
i love how mike’s smile is consistently cut around as to not ruin the illusion that he’s miserable
After all these years I still dont know which one is Mike.
It's the one that's got a big old case of the not-Jays.
He is not Susan.
It's okay, it's easy to mix up your Mikes and your Jays.
Mike's the bald one.
It started on a merch update. It should pop up if you search it on their channel.

In 2021, it’s amazing how the phrase “I’d punch James Franco if he was my kid too” stands so strong
“I’d beat up James Franco if he was my kid too.”
I would die to see Walt Disney's Animal Farm.
Austin Gremminger I would Die if I saw it.
Andy serkis is making it for Netflix or some other streaming service
Didn't they already made one in the 50s?
If Walt was involved they would've swapped communists for jews.
As soon as Mike said it, I thought, "That's going to happen." Animal Farm as a funny Pixar cartoon where Communism works perfectly? It'll gross $1B in China alone.
Always weirds me out to see these guys talking without beers in their hands.
Jacob H Don't worry they got enough hack fraud cash to buy themselves beer IVs. Now Mike doesn't even need to move to get hammered.
I’m several years late, but it REALLY sounds like Mike saying “wave to daddy” at 38:42. Definitely not words I ever wanted to hear in his voice.
I was thinking the same exact thing.
"I saw a film-"
"Fuck you."
Just saw The Nice Guys. Haven't laughed so hard at a movie in ages.
It’s wonderful
Watched it and didnt laugh once :(
Gosling was hilarious!
Are these the guys who directed red tails?
George Lucas No guys, it's Bret Ratner
funkoxen And the Palmer girl?
you can tell by the poetry
Every scene is SO dense.
They didnt technically direct it. They just said action and cut when the other guy forgot.
I'm extremely disappointed neither of these fucking HACKS saw Hell or High water
CrazyToastMan That's what she said!
me too
I'm extremely disappointed neither of these fucking HACKS saw Hacksaw. (Ridge)
Jay: I saw a film
Mike: fuck you
Me: hahahahahaha
haahahahahahaaha same
Okasy, so, Jay's recommendings for this year are The Witch, The Neon Demon and Pee Wee's Big Holiday..
This is a weird list.
don't forget the greasy strangler!
Oh yeah, my bad
ahaha nah its all good, just another weird pick of his
Also interesting to note that out of all these movies, apparently, I found the one about a man covered in grease murdering people the most forgettable. Seriously, what is it with this year.
Reip187 I loved the Neon Demon (helped that I was in a dark room with a great headset for sound because this film is all about aesthetics) but it is a film you should never recommend to anyone because they won't look at you the same ever again
the empty shot of mike's chair after he falls out laughing is the greatest shot in cinematic history
IS A CHEAP SET REPLACING MISTER PLINKETT'S HOUSE
2ndfunctionFTW IS SACHA BARON COHEN REPLACING MIKE STOKLASA
IS THAT A QUESTION
it's been a set the whole time ya dungus
My impression is that this is kind of a behind the scenes, self aware interlude before Rogue One. It's meta.
"I'd beat up James Franco if he was my kid, too." Jay Bauman 2016.
Comparing The Greasy Strangler to Garbage Pail Kids is totally apt. You really settled things on how to describe that movie.
The action in The Nice Guys was good! Well shot, well edited and with excellent sound. A movie doesn't need exploding city blocks and complex choreography to be exciting. All it needs, as you said, are characters that we care about and a sense of actual danger, which The Nice Guys had.
ouch, for mr. landis
It's actually a pretty good little movie, different from most stuff that comes out anyway.
It was if Reservoir Dogs was mixed with True Romance yet taken far less seriously.
LyleVSXyle It's a fun movie, people seem to hate on anything Landis does but I think he's really good.
***** He doesn't make movies though he writes scripts? But because he's in the public eye he's judged far more harshly than other writers.
***** The fact you think John Landis has that sort of pull in hollywood is ridiculous tbh so i'm done here. Multiple production companies wouldn't be bidding on his scripts because of John Landis that's insane.
i quite enjoy the predicament you guys have placed yourselves in with max landis
i quite enjoy this comment in retrospect
I’ll add further retrospective emotion to this comment chain with a solid “oof”

@@free_spirit1 That's the worst Dalek impression I've ever heard.
oh boi
Swiss Army Man might be my favorite movie 2016.
When a corpse powered by it's farts rides to the horizon give me a warm feeling then something was done right.
Nice Guys is probably my favourite film of the year and I only saw it a few days ago. I loved it so damn much.
Same for me, I was excited for that movie since I saw the trailer and usually when I wait that long for a movie I'm disappointed, but with this one it BLEW me away. Solid movie.
I never got a chance to see it when it came out- it's the first time in a while that the trailer for a comedy actually made me laugh out loud. Now that the hack frauds have praised it, I'll definitely be getting it as a Christmas present for myself since I don't have anybody in my life who loves me enough to buy me things.
guantanamo bae I love ya buddy!
The guy with the deep voice in the witch is in so many great british films, he is so underrated but has been on british tv for ever.
Jay: "The witch shows up within the first 5 minutes"
Witch appears at: 7 minutes
Jay confirmed as a hack and a fraud.
I love Mike and Jay's classic "ghost believer" / "ghost skeptic" dynamic.
It's like Mulder and Scully but with ghosts instead of aliens.
When are you going to eat fried chicken again?
More power to you.
bawk BAAAAWWWWWW
i love it when mike just says shit that catches jay off-guard
I'm kind of sad that they didn't discuss The Witch more in depth but oh well
Coming here from 2021 to say, "I can't die", is still my favorite line in The Nice Guys
Lol why does Jay likes movies about witches so much?
scockery * vvitch
Another way to make 1bil is to make a superhero movie with talking animals in it...
Guardians Vol 2.
Howard the duck 2?
VVVV guardians of the galaxy ftw
I would watch that
VVVV Actually that would be 2bil.
Mike nailed it, Office Christmas Party sits at 40% on both critical and audience. Even his off-hand examples to point out a trend, are on point.
Swiss Army Man and Greasy Strangler! Best year for movies.
There's a real-life reenactment of Animal Farm going on right now. How can you have missed Comrade Napoleon on TV for the whole of the last year?
She's been in politics for the past 30 years, though.
Love how close mine and jays taste is. Found so many good films from him.
+Jay Pickard not nearly as hard as he was during the greasy strangler
who would have thought Ralph from WreckItRalph was a Pervert !
***** was referring to his sense of abstract and his taste in art house. but that too is undeniable.
WreckItRalph I've been lead to both good and terrible from him. With arthouse you get either something interesting, or absolute pretentiousness. It's a 50/50 sometimes I get something good like the VVitch, others I get trash like Neon Demon
I think "Art", by definition kind of works like that. No two people see the exact same painting.
"And then I farted a lot." Mike predicted The Lighthouse back in 2016
Mike: I saw a movie starring Chris Pine Me: yay they're gonna talk about hell or high water Mike: called the finest hours. Me: ohhhh
Mike smiling, is a gift for the soul.
I walked out of the theater in the middle of Sausage Party. Regretted even staying that long.
it was pretty dull but the ending was hilarious
Thank you for the laughter, Mr. Reubens.
I really like that the poster is on the screen throughout so we can scroll past movies we haven't seen yet.
"Talking animals are the way to go. *FURRIES ARE THE FUTURE*." Jay Bauman, 2016
The Witch has like a two star rating on Amazon video lol shows the general public doesnt like the slow burning horror which is a damn shame
Jay compared it to the shining and the general public did not like that movie when it came out
Which is really weird to me. Everyone loves it now, but at the time it got a lot of Razzie nominations and everyone said Kubrick had lost his touch.
Michael Corkrean good point
It's good, certainly one of the more original films out there, but I'm not sure I'd give it as much high praise as Jay.
Tyler Bioshock R I'm a huge Kubrick fan, but the Shining is actually one of my least favorite films of his. The cinematography and musical score are great, but the performances of Jack Nicholson (more goofy than scary) and Shelly Duvall (whiny and annoying) really bring it down for me.
Thank you so much for putting the movie poster in the corner so if I still wanted to watch a film I could skip over the discussion without missing the next one.
My favorite thing about the shallows was how she had a tourniquet on her leg for 72 hours with no consequences. Realism.
is the set slowly dying?
no they are just getting bigger
Well Mike certainly is
Symbolism!
Came here with Collider background after The Nerd Crew parody and after some reservation i started to appreciate you guys. Great art house indy titles on your list here that no one talks about. I'm a fan
I want another one of these! These catch-up ones are always my favorite.
The Greasy Strangler sounds similar to a short story my friend wrote for English class back in 1994 called "the Naked Midget". I believe the main character was a little person and a detective who, when trying to solve a crime, would get naked and grease himself up. I don't remember all the details, but it was pretty damn funny
I had literally just said to my gf "I wish they did less comic book movies." - got schooled in the first five minutes.
When Mike hates your favorite movie of the year
TJ Hastie What's the movie though?
Kolpe Keenan I'm guessing Sausage party.
Strange Mercy tho
Yeah, which movie?
Hey guys, you forgot the teenage boy in The Witch! He was fantastic. Great acting.
Comedies tank largely because they are just as enjoyable on a small screen, so people wait to rent them.
Also... most of them suck nowadays.
Standup and sketch also usually doesn't translate well into a 2 hour script.
12 years a gay
Same thing.
Soren Sorensen ...Okay. That's... good to know... I guess.
[Ids5621-Retro] that's a lot of gay
Welcome to my World !
The Witch was a great movie by a first time filmmaker...which means that all of his other movies that he may make are going to suck, unless he has Quentin Tarantino syndrome.
What? Quentin's best is his first. Reservoir Dogs is his peak; Tim Roth was phenomenal.
Dr StrangeLove Pulp Fiction is my personal favorite from him, but I can't disagree with you that Reservoir Dogs is a great movie!
I'd say Pulp was his best. And I liked True Romance better than Dogs.
But he is still making great films. Django, Inglorious Bastards, and Hateful 8 are all really entertaining.
Couldn't stand the last hour of Django, and I didn't think very highly of Hateful 8--it was a barely average film. Inglorious, I have a lot of Love for, though. I adore Pulp Fiction, but I have Reservoir just a smidgen higher than it, if only because of how incredible Tim Roth and Michael Madsen are in it.
the only sad thing is that there was going to be an additional, more elaborate scene with Black Phillip but they didn't do it for logistical reasons (seemed like the goat didn't get along with the actors very well)
I want to see that quote on the Blu-ray..... "The Shallows Sucks, But It's Kind Of Funny."
-Jay from RLM
Lmfaoo the repressed memory joke was hilarious how in-depth Mike was with its description
That ending was awesome, genuinely made me laugh out loud.
Poor Max Landis. lol.
+Chris Eastman I think that they didn't like the movie but they like Max so this was their joking way of saying it was bad without ripping it apart.
They love Max but they hate his movies.
@@TheCanti they don’t love him now 😭😭
I can't believe I didn't remember this at first, but Mike and Jay's idea about it being funny to watch people trying to kill themselves is the subject of a great episode of Satoshi Kon's Paranoia Agent, wherein a group of people form a suicide pact but just can't seem to find a way to act on it. It's a funny, dark, and heartwarming episode that you can pick out of the show without needing much context if you don't want to watch the previous episodes. See it!
love these quick compressed reviews one after another. You guys are funny with out trying that hard.
I just came here after watching The VVitch, but wow, interesting to hear Rich's take on The Lobster. The Lobster is one of my top 5 (tied) movies. Absolutely love that movie, the idea of turning it off halfway through is crazy to me. It's very weird and slow in a *way*, but the atmosphere of the entire movie is so oppressive that it just grips me for the entire movie.
Damn, I love this channel so much. Found it just a few weeks ago, and I am currently going through all the old Half in the Bag episodes.
Yep, Mr. Plinkett's reviews of the prequels are also fantastic.

C'mon, you'd watch it.
Well yeah. Two old people trying to kill each other sounds pretty swell. Doubtlessly
There is a movie called "Folks" and the second part of the movie is a son setting up scenarios where his parents can die.

The Witch is also my favourite movie of 2016! What a beautifully made film- I love the soundtrack and all of the various levels of storytelling.
No Hell or High Water? For shame.
Overrated as hell. It was a (pretty good) that a lot of people missed. But it wasn't excellent on any level.

@10:19 can we just all appreciate for a moment how Jay described that the only things that make him laugh are things that remind him of Mike
Thank you for The Witch, i would have never known about it if you hadn't told me. Amazing movie, especially the ending was very satisfying.
'The Lobster' is like a demented Wes Anderson film. I personally found it hilarious.
I like how Mike farted during The Witch. Maybe it inspired Willem Dafoe's character to fart in The Lighthouse.
I admire Mike's attitude towards The Lobster. Understands it, but isn't going to pretend to like it because everyone else does. I've definitely fallen victim to doing that…
actuallly he did say ''i might not fully understand it, but im not gonna pretend that i do''. So thats a bit different.
The Jordan Peterson movie?
You guys are having so much fun in this episode. I love it!
love you guys, wish you'd do more episodes like this
