Half in the Bag Episode 138: 2017 Movie Catch-up (part 2 of 2)

- Mike and Jay continue talking about movies they saw in 2017, mostly horribly depressing and miserable ones!
(0:23) The Blackcoat's Daughter
(4:07) It Comes at Night
(8:28) Gerald's Game
(11:25) The Florida Project
(16:17) Killing of a Sacred Deer
(20:19) Mansfield 66/67
(22:31) Dunkirk
(22:50) A Ghost Story - Zábava
Hearing Jay refer to Logan Paul as 'that stupid asshole' really made my day.
*Logan Jones
I would watch 7 minutes of Rich Evans eating an entire pie.
Only 7 minutes?
He probably wouldn't throw up either
"It was a good pie. I'd have it again."
+Daniel Shults It would only take him 5
"It has a good taste. The taste is...good."
Mike Stoklasa, a ghost-believing Star Trek reference machine, fueled by alcohol.
not funny
+Redgrave192 cute Totodile. Also, I went to your page to get a better glimpse of it, and I had already seen one of your vids. How funny
😅
How do old people fit in your description?
"No, no I said an Arthouse Theater, where people are normal and not monsters."
Best Mike Quote of 2017
It cracks me up how both times Jay mentions hexes, Mike suddenly perks up and gets interested
"That's my fetish!" - Internal Mike Monologue

THERE´S DEMONS IN THIS MOVIE
OH HI MARK
Prince Solomon Go read a book then
*_IT'S SALT._*
That's right. It's totally not Hoth!
Hey, Look! It's the director of Rogue One! That didn't take me out of the movie at all!
"After destroying the superweapon we've retreated to a rebel base on a desolate planet and now where in trenches waiting for AT-ATs to walk over the horizon to slaughter foot soldiers, and we're going to escape in the nick of time on the millennium falcon... *BUT THIS TIME ITS SALT INSTEAD OF SNOW* "
I don't get why they didn't just make the salt flat copper surface blue, that would have looked cool.
I didn't understand the "its salt" part in the move. Now I know and I feel embarrassed.
*IT'S TAPE*
I really enjoy the regular Half in the Bag-stuff, but these mentions of not-quite-mainstram titles are a refreshing change of pace! More film reviews like this please!
If you want full length overviews of a specific film, which you may already know about their new series, check out their Re:View stuff... It is mainly older stuff, but as Thread Bomb said, it maybe more effective this way as a round up.
Very late here, but I have to concur and also say that the yearly catch-ups are probably my favourite HitB episodes. It’s nice to see them succinctly review some movies without delving too deeply or meandering.
Looking forward to this catch-up, 6 years later, coming in December or January or whatever the fuck
Just watched A Ghost Story on these hacks recommendation, and I can’t remember the last time a movie emotionally affected me so much
Interstellar just became emotionally irrelevant to me after I watched this today.
A Ghost Story pulled off the "existential time-centric sadness" themes 10 times better.
All these constant references to The Last Jedi.
I can feel the Plinkett review coming.
well we probably still need for it to release on video
As long as it isn't --the last Plinkett review-- coming, then I'm content.
It's like a a mutual break up. You both know it's time to move on but aren't quite sure how to end things until one of you finally does it. Star Wars just went and made the first step. They're a bit shocked but understanding of the situation. They'll take pot shots at their ex, as we all do, and eventually move on to something more substantial and fulfilling. Or RLM have realized they're 30 somethings talking about kids movies and all they have to look forward to now is the grave.
Twimpy Boy they didn't out right hate it but thought it killed all the interesting story threads the first one set up. They also mention that The movie needed significant editing and that the overall storyline was just messy and meaningless.
Mike mentioned potentially doing one for wish upon. That would be more interesting, I don't think they have much left to say about star wars anymore.
Florida project is the most accurate representation of what I see in my daily life living in Florida
24 Frames Of Nick it's a painful existence isn't it? Where in the hellhole do you reside, Saint Pete here
Constantine The 27th all the way down in Ft lauderdale, Broward
24 Frames Of Nick the further you go into the center of Florida, the weirder it gets.
24 Frames Of Nick yeah. I want to see that movie now, just because it sounds so true to living here😅 I’ve lived I Florida for 23 years, and used to hate it but now I’m more at peace with what it is. It’s odd and full of crazy people and alligators but also kind of interesting.
24 Frames Of Nick living in the Bronx is basically that but now overcrowd it and winter is a thing, a brutal one cus landlords don't wanna pay for heating
Mumblecore Hipster Nightmare: greatest band name ever
Sounds like a song by Mr. Bungle.
I saw A Ghost Story in a cinemark theater. All of the other 6 people walked out during the pie scene.
Some people just don't get it. That's an incredibly nuanced and heart-wrenching scene that hurts and makes you think about it the longer it goes on. I just don't get how some people can't read into it. Stupidity?
@@treefingers1183 I think some people think they are getting the emotion out of the scene but yet they think it shouldn't be as long as it was. I completely disagree with that because 1. It's boring and long so we get the feeling that she is going through. 2. it also plays into the theme of the movie, and Casey Affleck's character
@@crappymcdick I think it also has a lot to do with your perspective on life and where you are mentally when you see it. When I watched the movie the pie scene almost brought me to tears, but if I watched it a few months earlier I might have been screaming for the movie to get on with it. Definitely one of those movies you have to see at the right time with the right frame of mind.
@@engineerhealthyself Definitely!
@@treefingers1183 those people have been conditioned for more mainstream media.
Holy shit 3 RLM videos so close together? Am I in heaven?!
Technically it’s part 2 of the same recording but I agree I like it when RLM gets lazy
Jay was editing these HITBs while Mike edited the ReView
It feels like I'm inside of some kind of GHOST STORY
ummmwhatnow Yes, you’re in heaven. God decided to subvert your expectations by letting you think you were alive, but you were really dead the whole time.
According to a Redbox review, "I can understand why [A Ghost Story] didn't make any money at the box office."
Making $1.9 mil against a $100,000 budget? That's 19 times its budget.
and thats a lot
So Jin Choi Subtract out marketing and the portion the theaters take.
Well you see, people are fucking retarded.
Are you serious? Only a 100,000? They destroy a house at one point lmao
daiselol Apparently Lowery self-funded it. And the film was shot at the house for free, since it was set to be demolished anyway.

I know it’s been 5 years at this point but I really appreciate you guys covering A Ghost Story. I’m not even a big fan of that director but man he struck gold with that movie
Take a shot every time Mike say "Star Wars The Last Jedi"
thats very very unhealthy
See ya liver
Fuckin' lightweights.
"Which is great because I love Satan"
We all know it Jay.
I watched "A Ghost Story" due to their recommendation. It was a very good film, but it was a very strange experience, but was very refreshing to watch a movie like it. I won't say anything, but I would recommend those who truly enjoy cinema to watch this film in a quiet environment.
I literally paused this video and watched _A Ghost Story!_ I liked the movie so much I draped a white sheet over my head, walked into my neighbor's house, and destroyed their fine china!
That's really what this movie is about. How boring larping as a ghost and a widow really is. Except the part where you break the china.
JJCheeker Were they neighbors of colour?
JJCheeker is it better than a skhost story
Just tell the police

I watched A Ghost Story on your recommendation and I absolutely loved it. Thanks for the suggestion!

TELL ME WHAT TO THINK
Thank you for A Ghost Story. It was Tarkovskyesque (Mirror, mostly), in a great way, real experience. Your comment on it helped me and my co-watchers to get through the first act and get to the pleasure. That's why I listen to you through mundane hometasks. To find gems in your drunk mumbling. Never stop!
I actually went and rented Wish Upon after your last video and what a beautiful Trainwreck of a movie
same. it was hysterical.
Emma Riley Danvers I got it too. haven't watched it yet though ....
Rented? Is it 1994?
Jeremy Suika legendary bants.
William Burr it was hillarious bad , what movie were you watching?? Lmao
Watched Ghost Story trailer; did not hear the phrase "The world is changing", 0/10
Angelo Iossa But for real though it's pretty pretentious.
It's not really about change though. It's about family.
My first name is Sally, so hearing Jay say my name has put the final touches on my Jay Bauman Sex Fantasy Soundboard. Thank you, sir.
This is a fantastic comment.
🥂
I have been a massive RLM fan for years now, and I randomly stumbled across A Ghost Story on Netflix's 'Hidden Gems' section. I was absolutely floored by it. Near perfection in its ideas. I even re-watched it later that night because I couldn't stop thinking about it. I looked up reviews tonight and never even realized you guys reviewed it, LET ALONE made it both your movie of the year. My level of respect never ends with you hacks, thanks for your content.
Reading the online reviews at the end was my favorite part. I always get a kick out of how so many negative sound precisely the same. The phrase, "I want that _____ minutes of my life back" (and variations of that phrase) is used so often that I'm surprised anyone still thinks they're clever for using it.
On The Florida Project - used to live in Orlando, and yes . . . there are some terrible slummy neighborhoods around the "park / resort empires" around International Drive. Sorry to say I used to live in one of them - worst years of my life. :( Might have to check this movie out, just so I can feel good about NOT living in Orlando anymore.
They really shouldn't be so hard on The Last Jedi. It took 12 years to make.
gnarkillguch that joke is 12 years old
Thinktanks took 12 years to develop and finalize that joke.
Love A24. They are putting some interesting material out there.
It occured to me their logo appears on the majority of the more interesting films I've watched recently.
It occured to me only just now, reading your comment and visiting their website, seems like all I like is A24
A24 is the new Focus Features. It's just a matter of time until they get bought up by AOL-Time-Warner-NBC-Universal-Comcast-Xfinity-Disney-Pixar-Marvel-LucasFilm-AT&T-Arby's-Sbarro, brought to you by Carl's Jr. in association with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.
@@barrybreadson2146 Sonic & KnuckleHunkybuck
Could not disagree more. I can't stand the pretentious nature of the films A24 and Focus put out. Both have made 1, maybe 2 films I would be interested in watching, but the way everyone talks about them makes me avoid them like the plague.
I just finished watching "A Ghost Story," and I just have to say that I love it. I wasn't sure what my reaction would be, but by the end of the movie I was in awe. Thank you for the movie catch-up! I probably would never see half of these films if not for your videos.
I should be going to work... but new RLM... the boss will understand.
Tell us did he understand.
SuperArppis he doesn’t really have a job
Came here to say this. *Exactly* this. Spooky. 💀👍 Okay. Slack mode engaged.

Your boss is in the know. He's a cool dude.
I've seen A Ghost Story. It took me 12 years to finish!
it feels like it, yeah.

No, but Ethan Hawke whipped me in my boyhood.
I’m actually more scared to watch ‘A Ghost Story’ than any other horror film. I don’t play with existentialism.
That movie on acid could really mess you up.
Replying 4 years later but just in case anyone else is worried about this: the movie is, fundamentally, incredibly hopeful. It brushes up against really big, scary concepts and it does get to you at points, but by the end I found that everything seemed to make a lot more sense. Not just things in the movie but things in my own life. It's a powerful movie and has changed my life more than any other film by far.
What a fantastic movie A Ghost story is. I was immersed.
About the pie eating, it seems very long at the time also because it's presented early in the movie, but it makes sense later as Mike pointed, it has multiple purposes. Also, I think it represents quite well the storm of emotions when you lose someone, in the way that you start to ask "Will this feeling, this void, this sadness ever go away?" (like you seeing the movie asking how long will this scene go on), and for a period it seems it will not, it lingers, it even grows again (as she starts to eat it faster and angrily midway through), but then time passes by and surely enough it starts to fade away, life happens and you have to move on.
This has been the best three days, waking up to three Red Letter Videos! But now I think I'm over doing it....had a dream with Mike in it...
Or did you had a dream ????????
art house movie, where people are normal and not monsters
I was watching a ghost story while eating orange chicken. I was so immersed into the movie that i had realized that after like 20 minutes I had my fork in the air with the chicken near my mouth. I was so into the movie I paused my hand in order to focus.
5:09 and hear we see the mythical Mike Stoklasa mating call.
That’s how the reuben sandwich crumbles.
HAHA yeah!

You're doing a great fucking job, Sunny Jim.
RLM. Still the best excuse to ignore my horrible family for 30 or 40 minutes at a time.
TheColonelKlink Put a hex on them.
Mike’s deadpan readings of the Redbox reviews of A Ghost 👻 Story were my ASMR.
Growing up right next to two of the most famous theme parks in America I can tell u the representation of life, like the parallels between social classes felt very real and accurate in the Florida project, I didn’t like the ending either though because it felt insanely jarring right at the emotional climax to switch to iPhone recording
Yeah the ending was terrible lol. Not only was it jarring for the reason you mentioned, and that it didnt match the tone of the rest of the movie, but also it was just stupid because how could two little girls just run in to Magic Kingdom without being stopped, paying tickets, etc. It would have been better if they ran away to that tree they would play pretend on. Or, if she just got taken away by CPS and the last shot was her in the back of the van driving past a billboard of a Disney advertisement saying “Happiest place on earth”
@@hazyhalfmoon EXACTLY WHAT YOU SAID WITH THE BILLBOARD WAS WHAT WAS IN MY HEAD WHILE WATCHING IT. Such a brilliant movie and they really fucked that ending up
The most interesting thing about A Ghost Story is that Rooney Mara actually did write something on the piece of paper for the first scene. Lowery simply asked Mara to write down something that felt personal and meaningful to her, the movie and her character. What she wrote, folded and painted into the wall went down with the house in the demolition scene, and the note that Affleck’s ghost retrieves was shot with a different piece of paper. In the footage you can’t see it, Casey has no idea what it said because with the sheet he could barely see. So in the end Mara was the only one who actually knew what gave the ghost closure...
I know this is a pointless point, but Jays hair since the first episodes have really came a long way. 👌👌
Likely eating better / exercising as well. Good on ya, Jay!
Mike looks the same lol.
i would listen to these redbox reviews all day.
I watched A Ghost Story because of this, and I'm glad I did.
fuck Man.. same Here. i cried like a little girl in The end of that movie. and i still can't explain why.
It's such a beautifully sad movie.
@@kondziu1992I finally watched the movie tonight and I think I understand what made me cry: Early in the movie the guy at the party says everything is meaningless because of the eventual death of the universe, but then it shows the ghost will wait hundreds of years for one message from a person he cares about. And in the end, I think it shows a single moment of true connection transcends time and space, and that's what existence is all about.

You guys are awesome and boldly honest with your analysis. A Ghost Story was such a refreshing movie experience amongst the crash and bang style of movie making we see all too often today. If you have ever second guessed yourselves please don't, you guys are spot on! Keep it up!!!
What a great discussion. The flow between Jay and Mike is great. Very informative. Thank you for this.

Ghost Story was easily the most original and thought provoking film of the year. I’m so happy you guys actually picked it as your favorite film of the year.
I love when you guys do this. I get busy and can't keep track of all the films that come out, so this is a way for me to get some good recommendations on stuff I missed. Thanks so much!
Thanks for making me get over the hipster vibe of A Ghost Story. It was an unforgettable experience.
So glad I forgot everything about A Ghost Story before actually watching it, it was great, thanks for the recommendation
The absolute best part about It Comes at Night is that they don't give you ANY information outside of what the characters themselves know. The fact that you as a viewer either come, or don't come, to the same conclusions as the main character does is what made the movie really awesome for me.
Im so glad you guys read the reviews.

"Quick jab at Star wars"
-Star Wars Jedi Outcast: "If the ways of the jedi were easy, there'd be millions of us, instead of dozens..."
-TLJ: Hearing stories of Luke Skywalker/the Jedi in general as a kid= Jedi Master
-Star Wars Jedi academy: when you make Jaden turn to the dark side, Murder many of Luke's Students, curve stomp your Master Kyle Katarn and went on to build your own Empire with a powerful scepter that can make ordinary beings into powerful Sith Warriors Luke says to Kyle "I can still sense good in him.
