I decided to watch Lost because of this video. I just finished the show and was sobbing at the ending. Personally, I don't know how they could have made it more emotionally satisfying.
Where can we watch it?
Note to self.. watch lost
dont watch it if you have any standards or taste
See, here's my theory. It was very Emotionally satisfying, for those of us for whom this was an emotional experience. Too many people watched LOST as an Intellectual experience, trying to uncover all the answers. And the finale wasn't logical. Island magic is the best answer we get. So people who wanted a real, clear answer were upset. LOST to me has always been about the characters and their relationships, not on the mystery. And the ending is very satisfying if that is your focus.

At the bar a while back the bartender and I had been talking about our mutual love of Lost when she decided to put the show on. A lot of the bar joked about it and talked shit about it, but before the first part of the pilot was over, we'd turned off the jukebox and put the sound on. The people that had shit on it without really watching it much or at all were suddenly invested and asking me all sorts of questions. When I finally went home I think they were on episode 6.

I think something crazy about this show is that even if you watched it when it came out and never watched it again, you would still remember characters, names, and major events.
This is an excellent point.
True. I even remember the names of single episode characters like Arzt, or Nikki and Paulo lol
Its been over 33 years since I watched They Came From Outer Space. I still remember it and can name characters like Bo and Abe, Lt. Baker and Lt. Wilson, Mom and Dad (they never had names). Does not mean it was a good show. I still remember when Bo and Abe were abducted by murderous amazon aliens.
You lost me at "never watch it again," What is that??
@@ashleyclevinger3430 I mean, they said “even if you never _watched_ it again” and their comment is unedited??? Did you just misread the comment and didn’t reread it, or did you make a typo? If it’s the former, then it’s possible that _you_ may be the person who lost you lol. Cause people can’t always control whether or not other people will correctly read the words that they wrote 😅
Also, I’m pretty sure what they’re basically saying is that: even if you watched the show years ago back when it first aired (in 2004-2010) and you never saw it again since then, you’d _still_ have a good memory of it years later-I just assume they’re probably speaking from personal experience-cause it had _that_ great of an impression on your psyche 👍
"Lost is a show that needs to be binged"
I agree it works well binged, but my favorite part of watching Lost as it came out was the theorycrafting, the podcasts that analyzed every frame of the episode to find all the little clues and Easter eggs and (more often than not) red herrings that the show provided. Granted the months-long hiatuses were killer, but the community that loved Lost really flourished because of the weekly nature of the show, not in spite of it.
I was in my late teen & early twenties when Lost came out. It was the last show I religiously HAD to watch as it came out on Thursday nights, since you needed to have seen it to be able to theorize and chat about it the next day in the office. I loved theorizing about the show..... that being said, looking back, I think the crazy theorizing and mystery hunting actually hurt the show at the time. When they didn't provide every single answer by the end of the series, people were pissed off and shit on they Finale. They were so focused on that they missed out on the beautifully interwoven story about this group of characters.
@@KS-xk2so To be fair the shows creators did encourage the mystery hunting and theories because it supplied them with unlimited free publicity . Even a lot of the official merchandise about the show encouraged viewers to solve the puzzles of the island. I agree with you though it was one of the last television shows I was hooked on religiously . I got given the first season on some pirated DISCS by an online friend. The show hadn't even been released in the UK yet so I was in the handful of chosen ones who got to see it before everyone else. Then it was difficult to get the episodes as they dropped in the US so I used something called LIMEWIRE I think it was that was used to pirate CDS to get the episodes and I would go straight to IDB forums to argue with others about the episode . Then a cable network got the rights to LOST and I actually bought the package off them to get the last couple of seasons. Like EVERYONE else here and everyone online at the time I was absolutely disgusted with the ending and furious. Of course back then you had the LOST APOLOGISTS as they were known who tried feebly and pathetically to defend the show but ultimately failed and they still have the lost apologists today. Anyway I bought the boxset and have re-watched it every now and again and I am now at peace with the ending and accept it.
Yeah, the counter to the idea that "it's a show that needs to be binged to be appreciated because who is going to keep it all together over a long period of time," is the idea of pouring over the shown in-between episodes. There were ways to stay engaged with it when you weren't watching it and for those interested in doing so, it was a unique experience that's hard to replicate.

I’m so happy when you were describing the soundtrack being emotional you put John Locke’s backstory. His backstory (and later this entire series) is the ONLY ever moment I’ve cried at a non-animated tv show. And i have to credit most of that to the soundtrack. Its so fucking heartbreaking to see a 40 something man sobbing about his dad while the most heartbreaking and emotional song you’ve ever heard is playing.
My parents watched Lost while it was airing and I was a little kid. I remember so vividly being scared shitless by the soundtrack because I could hear it from my bedroom while they watched. I never even saw the show but I was scared to watch it for so long. I went and watched the whole thing partly because of this video, and I knew I’d come back and watch it after I finished. Well, I just watched the finale about 5 minutes ago and here I am. Thank you Drew for focusing on the soundtrack and composer so much here, those songs truly scarred me as a child (in the best way possible). I’m still in shock at how underrated this show is, especially the ending. I’ve heard so many people saying over the years that the ending was terrible, so I had mentally prepared myself for that. I ended up being surprised by how amazing this whole show was. It was truly ahead of its time and a total game changer for the genre. I need a few days to process this lol
Yeah, a lot of people don't even understand the ending and think that everybody was dead the whole time... which makes no sense at all if you think about it for a moment.
@@kuhpunkt That was my conclusion, too. I think most of the people who hated the ended assumed they were dead the whole time, and I would’ve hated it too if that was what happened. "You don't end shows that people are watching"

Started Lost a few weeks ago because of this video. Just finished the finale. One of the most beautiful, profound things I’ve ever seen that’s made me think about my outlook on life. Sounds dramatic but you’ll understand if you watch!
Lost is not profound! It is mystery box trash written by monkeys on typewriters. I watched this show beat for beat as it aired. I watched it again back to back on DVD to see if I just didn't get it but there is nothing to get. It's hollow key jangling all the way to that bad ending.

I think that Charlie from LOST may genuinely be one of my favorite characters of all time. the fact that a mainstreamed and produced show soundtrack has a song in it called something as stupid as “booneral” is brilliant and gives me hope for humankind.
He puts that kind of energy into naming with all of his soundtracks. He's for sure the next John Williams to me. His Star Trek soundtrack is ecstasy
Look up the title names in his other soundtracks. Almost every track is based on puns from what happens in the movie. Like he has a running gag where he calls a track "World's worst X" so the Venice action scene in Spiderman far from home is called "World's worst water feature" and the end fight in Mission impossible Ghost protocol is called "World worst parking valet"
in ratatouille the music under the montage with linguini and colette is called "colette shows him le ropes" fhdkghdhf pretty much all of his track names are like that. i respect him so much.
I’m so freaking happy that Drew addressed the underrated genius of Michael Giacchino. He explained the exact reasons why he’s my favorite composer.
-he’s done the music for my favorite movies
-he matches the music to the story
-he uses really weird percussion instruments
-he makes beautiful themes that adapt to the emotion of the scenes
-he names movie tracks so ridiculously
It's so exciting to see someone with a big platform like Drew highlighting what makes him such a great composer! The constant drama, mystery, theories makes you addicted. The plot itself was genius and everything was so thought of. It's truly amazing
If you haven't watched The Leftovers (also Damon Lindelof who did Lost), you'd probably love it. I feel like he learned the lessons he needed to from Lost, and that's why it's probably the tightest 3-season TV arc of all time. Incredible show.
Leftovers benefited from being a cable show that's why it's tight. I'd argue the characters from Lost are infinitely more intriguing than the cast of the Leftovers though.
@@Romans8-9Agreed. The Leftovers had a known number of episodes to get to the ending, so everything could be strictly planned out with no filler. Lost, had to deal with 22 episode seasons, no set ending timeframe (network wanted at least 10 seasons, producers wanted 3), a writers strike, main characters wanting to leave, etc.
While I also agree that the Lost characters were more interesting, I’d have to give a slight nod to the cast of The Leftovers in terms of acting, especially Justin Theroux and Carrie Coon.

This is a kind of serendipitous day. I saw this video in my feed around a year ago and clicked on it like the loyal Guy I am. I was fully ready to watch this whole video and have Lost spoiled, but as I sat through the intro I remembered the mysterious air the show had to me growing up; a strange show about plane crash survivors, and the way my dad excitedly babbled about it. I closed out of the video, and decided to watch the show, and come back when I was done. Little did I know that I was embarking on a year long journey. I began the show with my dad, and it kept us connected as I went off to my first year of college. I enjoyed watching it with the friends I made there. After long breaks between watching, I quickly remembered how invested I was in these characters. I saw the struggles of the characters in the show, and it made me feel less alone. Today, I finished the series. I sobbed as I watched what were once flawed and damaged people grow and complete their stories. As the series came to a close I felt that uncommon but welcomed ache when you say goodbye to a series and characters that resonate with you. I sent a text to my dad, and he made me aware that the day I chose to finish the show is the air date of the series finale 13 years to the day. It then only felt right that I finish the show on such a strange and almost predestined note. And now, after watching a full series recap (because this show is so fucking confusing) I am sitting in the dark at 1:42 in the morning getting ready to watch a video that I have traveled a long, sometimes arduous, but totally worthwhile path to see. All this to say, if you somehow read this, thanks Drew for being the Jacob to my flight 815. Maybe that was a bad analogy, but thank you for introducing me to one of my favorite shows ever. Lost is really a masterpiece. If you watch the first season knowing the finale, everything is so tied together
You brought up something 99% of reviewers overlook: the composer.
They truly make or break shows, and often times they’re the reason a show/film is SO memorable.
Well 99% of reviewers are STUPID lol. But seriously everything about Lost's score is perfect. The slow rhythmic sound of low string instruments that builds suspense. Then the almost swarming orchestra when our characters are fleeing from danger. The percussion using actual pieces of the plane wreckage. The use of oldies music throughout the series. And who could forget that sad, melancholic tune that plays during the more emotional scenes. We all know the one.
Idk about make or break lol
Manchester by the Sea could’ve been one of my favorite movies of all time but the score was SO awful that I could barely finish the movie. Everything else was perfect but a lack of a good composer/music supervisor wrecked it.

Yes! Part of why Riot's and Netflix's Arcane worked so well was because of the soundtrack, they put a lot of care in it. You can see the process on CZcams, a documentary on one of Riot's channels. Much respect.

Funny you bring Up, since it's the same composer from LOST (as well as Incredibles, most WWII Medal of Honor games, and the first CoD plus many major blockbusters)

I like how it stops you from being spoiled
Same hahaha, I'm a huge Lost fan and I never knew this and it killed me.
I agree about them using unknown actors. The fact that i only recognised Dom Monaghan from LOTR and Elizabeth Mitchell from The Expanse, honestly confused me sometimes, i would forget their names and just call them Dom and Anna. No fault of the show, just drives home how effective fresh faces are at establishing a character
Thank you for this love video to LOST. This show was a gem my mom and I watched over the pandemic and I loved hearing all of these things about it I had not known, especially the music guy!
One thing I love about Drew is he makes videos about topics he really enjoys, not necessarily what he thinks is most popular at the time. Like I've never seen Lost but I watched this video start to finish because he breaks it down so well and is so passionate about it. And now I want to binge Lost lol.
This!! The videos he makes are never about current trending things, just things he has a passion for or things that are on his mind. It's really refreshing to just have new, original content that no one else is also talking about
Absolutely true
That’s awesome! Go check out lost. You won’t regret it

I really appreciate how in-depth you went on the music. Sound is something that is only really acknowledged if it goes poorly but done right it will be the most important aspect of the mood

Agreed. My favorite episode!

STOP IT I LOVE DESMOND SO MUCH@@vytriole
Fun fact about John Williams music sounding kind of similar. The scene in Chamber of Secrets where Malfoy and Harry are chasing the snitch has the same score as the scene in Attack of the Clones where Anakin and Obiwan are chasing the bounty hunter. He was working on both movies at the same time and there was some kind of mix up, but you wouldn’t even notice cuz it fits both movies.
I hope this is just trolling bc that would be funny 😁 otherwise, fascinating
fascinating
@@JaseekaRawr Eight months late but no he's not trolling. I actually was a big fan of both Harry Potter and Star Wars as a kid and watched them both enough times to notice. This is the first time I've ever seen anyone else call it out though. Still love John Williams.
I'm so glad you're giving some attention to scores and to Michael Giaccino. He's always coming up with interesting names for his tracks. The one in the Incredibles where Dash starts running from the guards is called "100 Mile Dash" and later on he would title a track in Ratatouille "100 Rat Dash". Another track in Ratatouille is called "Is it soup yet?" Which is an obscure line from the Goofy Movie. He also did the score for my favorite Disney ride, Space Mountain. Mad respect for this guy.
love him
My personal favorite is just a tiny touch on the credits of Inside Out: “Joy of the Credits”
Rogue one has my favorite score of his
The zootopia soundtrack titles have so many animal puns its great
Yes!!!
I LOVE hearing you talking about movie sountracks. I don't hear people talk about it in depth like you do in here and as someone who aspires to create soundtracks in the future, this is very inspiring and encouraging.
The soundtrack comment is absolutely spot on, I don't think Twin Peaks would have such a recognisable atmosphere without Angelo Badalamenti's soundtrack. Just hearing any of the tracks makes you feel like you're in Twin Peaks, and it does so much work establishing the setting and tone of the show. I can't even think of any of the scenes without the tracks playing along in my head.
They spent all that money on the Pilot and he still couldn't fly the plane without crashing?
I JUST SPIT MY DRINK 🤣🤣🤣
I'll be honest when Drew said 10 million on the pilot I was like "that's an awful lot of money for a character I assume died" took me a minute to go "oh yeah first episode".
This is the funniest comment I've ever seen hahahaha
“There were some disappointing character arcs” and looks directly at Sayid

I really loved sayid, he was my favorite part other than hurley and I couldn't agree more, they drop his development so quick
What's the matter guys? You didn't like Dark Sayid??
I always skip the Sayid episodes because they are sooooooo boring

thank you deeply drew, I watched this video last summer and i decided to start lost, i binged it and stayed up all nights just to watch it. I think it is and will always be my fav show of all time. Coming back to this video now I almost get sad because i miss lost and how invested i was in everything that was happening. again, thank you so much for this!!!!
Drew, THANK YOU. I've watched LOST only twice-once as it aired on ABC (start to finish) and once a couple years later binged on Netflix-and even though I've tried to start it again, I couldn't bring myself to get past a few episodes of S1. I'm now reconsidering that.
It was my favorite show for a long time and I even enjoyed the ending when it premiered, so I'm really happy to hear such a great take on it. Also, Giacchino has been one of my favorite composers for several years now, too, and I'm really happy to hear others appreciate the glory of great music. 🙌
Oh we're reppin' Lost AND Giacchino today?! YEAH, TIME TO SHOW UP
Hi Brookes! I love your videos!
Like drew I didn't know I loved giacchino music because I didn't know he was the one behind some of the best soundtracks ever. All his music just sounds so different from each other. Which is truly impressive
Yeah me too dude I love Michael Giacchino
Aren’t you the guy that doodles?
@@steamynoodle2010 yeah I sure hope I do
The fact they used the airplane parts as instruments for the music is so freaking impressive and genius. Wow
They also recorded the music after he could watch the episode, rather than prepackaged music. There’s a whole story behind it, and it’s amazing.
more like a gimick
I love the way the music itself describes an aircraft with winking lights crashing into the sea, while also promising Twilight Zone type adventure.

4:27 Literal goosebumps from that time in the video. I didn't know that man was responsible of so many iconic soundtracks. What an absolute genius, he deserves everyone's respect and what is to be an ideal composer.
i started watching lost becaus of this video. THE SOUNDTRACK IS TRULY INSANE. sounds, the way things echo, the sudden thrums of music always gives me shivers
Michael Giaccino rightfully calls himself the nerd composer...cuz he's literally done so much that has defined modern pop culture. I love that you spotlighted him!!!
didn't he literally use plane parts from the show to make up some of the instruments for the music during jungle scenes? GENIUS.
When he said they spent 14 million on the pilot, I completely thought he meant the actor that played the plane's pilot. Now, minutes later, I'm realizing I'm literally stupid.
It's ok I've been there, no shame or blame ! Lol
Lamo! It's ok, that's absolutely something I would do.
I actually saw this as a joke just yesterday. Someone on Twitter wrote "Everyone keeps talking about how amazing Lost's pilot is, and he literally isn't, he crashed a plane!"
I could tell you I didn't laugh so hard I cried, but I'd be lying to save face.
This comment has me dying
I keep coming back to this video over and over. I’m on season 4 and I no joke cried for about 3 straight episodes during one characters death.
You taking a deeper dive into the composers and composition style is everything to me ✨️ thank you so much for highlighting a CRUCIAL component of media production 🤍
IM SO GLAD PEOPLE ARE STARTING TO ACKNOWLEDGE MICHAEL GIACCHINO HES SUCH AN INCREDIBLE COMPOSER HES LIKE MY IDOL
Michael has always been a favorite of mine. His work on games like Medal of Honor and movies like Star Trek and The Incredibles are among my favorites

YESSSSS Michael has been a fave of mine for YEARS
HIS STAR TREK SCORES ARE ALSO FANTASTIC

"We don't end shows people are watching."
That is one of the most entitled and demeaning things I've ever heard towards storywriters. THEY should decide when their story is over. It pisses me off.
Who asked
Well yeah, but that kind of attitude won't get people funded.
That's the whole concept of the CW arrowverse :)

I really appreciate you taking the time to talk about the musical composition behind the media, it’s so often overlooked and Michael Giacchino is an exemplar composer and music director I’m so glad you highlighted it

Leitmotif is the word drew is looking for when talking about the melodies being reused in different context and different accompaniment to create different feelings. That recurring melody is the leitmotif and I personally absolutely love when they are used well.
I think they're fairly common but I only really care about the music of things I already like so I wouldn't be surprised if it's actually uncommon but I just consume a lot of things with leitmotifs
It is common, or at least it's common in films with good film scoring. Leitmotifs are like a third of the reason why characters and plots are compelling, because your brain subconsciously makes associations and recollections when it hears the same theme.
That’s why I love the How to Train Your Dragon soundtracks composed by John Powell. They’re full of leitmotifs, and they’re always evolving and blending in new ways! The music itself tells a story
I literally said "leitmotif" out loud when he started talking about them!
Leitmotifs are basically standard at this point. There are almost always leitmotifs in some form or another in movie music. Pretty crazy to think that was basically nonexistent until Berlioz, Verdi, and Wagner.
It's an incredible thing in games when used right. The main title screen theme being incorporated to a final boss, or even having it persist through zones but each one bringing its own flavor to it.
Me, emerging out of the shadows of a dark alley: "Hey kid. You like Lost, huh? You ever try Twin Peaks?..."

Coming back here after watching LOST because of this video (and dragging my brother and his wife) into it too and I can say it was definitely worth it. Thanks for the rec! 💖
The sidebar about Micheal Giacchino is everything I’ve ever been telling people about him, I watch movies just because he’s scoring them, which is why I will be in theaters to watch The Batman, even though I haven’t seen a single Batman/joker movie in my life.
I think he is extremely underrated but I honestly dont think he has done anything that comes close to his work on LOST. The variety and level on consistently amazing music is legendary
epic music score and Robert Pattinson is going to star as batman and he's epic so I will definitely go see it, drag my mom with me too
Just do another one on the glorious Clint Mansell and I´m happy! 😉

hey drew just telling you, but a personalized sound for a character is called a motif ! theres character motifs, relationship, settings, ect !:D

Unfortunately I got fed up with the show during season 4 and stopped watching but I picked it up a month ago and finally finished it last week. I'm so glad I did it was really good, I loved it. Now I'm back to complete this episode from Drew!!
Fun fact: a melody or phrase linked to a specific character or idea is called a leitmotif! Musicals do this all the time, especially the part where they transform leitmotifs to fit the changing narrative
And the term is originally from Wagner operas, especially the Ring Cycle!
the video game the last of us does this too!!
The day I decided to break up with my "not that serious boyfriend" he suggested we rewatch lost and we ended up staying together for 3 more months purely out of dedication to the show. I broke up with him during the finale credits 💀

I can't believe they poured more money in to the pilot than ever before, and yet he still managed to crash the plane 😭
this should not be as funny to me as it is

"No one asked for that!"
That's actually, unfortunately, completely untrue. The origin of Jack's tattoos were a major source of conspiracy and theories back in the day, even though they were just Matthew Fox's actual tattoos that they didn't wanna bother covering up. I see the episode as a "fuck you, shut up" to those theorists.
This is also around the time that the producers and network were negotiating on how many seasons to extend the show. The network wanted at least 10 seasons since it was a hit, the producers originally wanted to do the whole show in 3 seasons. So, to be fair, there was a lot of filler early in Season 3 when they didn’t know how many episodes to plan for, which is why the losties spent so much time in the animal cages. Once they negotiated it down to 6 total seasons, things started to tighten up. Of course, until the writers strike in Season 4.
His videos are such a standout in the genre here on CZcams. It’s also refreshing to see someone discuss something they actually enjoy.
That’s such a perfect explanation
Props for the Michael Giacchino tangent, I feel like not many people know just how many soundtracks he's done that they probably know at least a few of
I love him so much i talk about it all the time 💀 I looked up from across the room watching this freaking out omg
exactly, he's even composed soundtracks for a lot of marvel movies. one of my favorites by him is the spider-man homecoming theme
and he's composing the soundtrack of The Batman (2022), im so excited to hear it
I've often described Lost as the Millenials's Star Wars in the way it blew a generation away with wonder. It meant whatever you want to everybody, good and bad.
It came out of nowhere too, a real organic creative bolt.

Hey you have to watch 19 more minutes of the video
Lost is my favorite show, I used to watch it as a kid because my mom had the first two seasons on DVD and I would always watch them.. and then I finished the entire series years later and now I'm rewatching it again! It's amazing
I’m coming back to this video because currently in my English class we are watching Lost. I had swore I remembered Drew making a video about the series, but I questioned myself. I decided today to look back to find I was right, and this video just made me adore the series even more. Even though this video is a lil old, I, glad I revisited it to really understand the truth behind Drew’s video on this amazing show
As an ancient and decrepit former Lost stan, it's interesting when you say the show needs to be binged to be appreciated. I actually think the drawn-out network schedule was part of the charm of being a fan back then, because it encouraged diehards to fill the gaps with tons of theories and speculation.
Agree. Maybe in 2021 this is a more reasonable take, but back in the days when the show was airing, there was definitely this feeling of the opposite.
I'm not going to say that there's a right or a wrong way to watch the show but I personally feel like I would have lost a lot of what made the show great if I'd binged it.
What is your pfp from? I know I recognize it
Oh yeah, I don't think any streaming show could ever compare to Lost's experience. You watched it at that precise right time and it was it, if you lost it then it was up to you to find a rerun, then just spend the week theorising.
Amazing
But that was the doubles edged sword because the fan speculation helped people turn against it when things weren’t answered
@@mollymcdade4031
Exactly...
I honestly believe that once GRRM finally releases Winds of Winter the thousands of theories that have been flying around since the last book will get invalidated and fans will turn sour towards a franchise they spent a chunk of their life discussing. Even if the book ends up being genius, the most of the fun has been the theories.
