    I live 40 mins from Cheshire and the police 100% did a terrible job. Nobody took initiative, they let the criminals guide the events of that day and they did NOTHING to circumvent. If you think the Cheshire cops were bad, read up on Tracey Thurman and the City of Torrington CT.

      We had a similar case in Castle Rock, CO. Unfortunately, the courts sided with law enforcement and their case has become widely cited as a refutation of the Thurman Law, stating that police officers have no obligation to protect a private citizen. It's sickening where the attitudes in law enforcement have gone.

    This case was terrible. I met Dr Petit a number of times through work before this occurred and just knowing what happened to his entire family was heartbreaking. He struggled with being the soul survivor for a very long time. Your right Dr Grande, the cops were extremely negligent. Dr. Grande, thank you for talking about the police and the mayor in this case! The horrible cowardice and negligence of the police, and that disgusting comment the mayor made, praising them for their cowardice and negligence were both abhorrent. I feel that it is SO important for people to know how the police handled this case! Also, I appreciate what you said about what we can learn from this case. Your advice on judging criminals/people based on their behavior and not their words is vitally important! I saw the documentary on this case years ago, and I've never seen or heard of a sadder one since. Unfortunately, I've heard of many cases where the police and/or judges and government officials have been incompetent and corrupt, but this case just....it really takes the prize for adding the most insult to injury. I mean...who the hell says something like what that mayor said? And he said it PUBLICLY! Omg...that poor family! If I were the father, I would rather have died than have to know and remember what happened to my wife and kids in their final living hours.Thank you for covering this case the way you did.

    This case still haunts me to this day. I remember seeing the dad on Oprah not long after the murders and it never left my mind. He was so devastated, helpless and just completely shuttered by what happened to his family. I think he also had survivor's guilt or not being able to save his family. I saw an update some years later where they showed he got re-married and seemed like he found some happiness again. This case was very tragic. If anybody deserves a death penalty, it is these two cowards.

    As unbelievable as this may sound, I watched a program several months ago where a reporter was interviewing Hayes who claimed that he had submitted a request for a sex change operation because he felt that he was created to be a woman and that God had made a mistake. In his warped mind, he believed that he deserved to have something he wanted since he had to spend the rest of his life in jail and was "struggling with depression." I couldn't believe what he was saying and his cocky attitude. Surely such a surgery would never be approved and put into place, although Haye's lawyer said that it was Hayes' right to receive "medical treatment" that would make his "sad life" better. Oh really. If such a surgery were to ever take place--and I can't imagine it would even be considered--it would only show our tax dollars to be "hard at work" yet again.
    And BTW, Dr. Grande, I'm HOOKED on your channel.

      this is clear and blatant manipulation by him. there are other factors that he identified in a podcast that were false. with the only person to validate his claims having died 2 years after the murders, his mother would be spinning in her grave knowing what he's claimed. i learned about the claims long after and to be fair, i had no interest in challenging his claims on her behalf. if he chose to disparage our mother, that's on him. it's not my role to preserve or refute his lies. i did my job. he belongs to history now.

    • @Mammel248
      @Mammel248 Před 3 lety +3

      Exactly. One thing that I always wonder about, which would be the best "deterrent". Is the death penalty scarier or is life in prison scarier? One of the reasons why medieval death penalties could be extremely brutal (just look up breaking at the wheel for example) was that they believed it would be a great deterrent. It's interesting... you would think that actual psychopaths wouldn't be deterred (because they are often fearless) but that "normal people gone bad" might think twice. Wonder if there's any research on this.

    • @rowenahartman6631
      @rowenahartman6631 Před 3 lety +1

      @@Mammel248 You are exactly right and it’s not just psychopaths who are not deterred. Crime statistics show no downward trajectory immediately after an execution. For one thing, no one plans to get caught. For another, many killings are impulsive and the killer isn’t “thinking” about anything, simply acting out of rage. For another, grandiosity makes many think that they’re superior to the authorities (which may be true sometimes) and that they can always stay one step ahead. My dad used to tell me that pickpockets used public hangings of pickpockets to work the crowd. (Not sure where he learned that...) Executions are clearly motivated by our desire, as a society, for revenge, pure and simple. I would surely want to kill someone who hurt my kids or grandkids - after first torturing them - but I wouldn’t actually have the stomach for it. Dr. Grande’s observations are spot on.

      y the heck is capital punishment so expensive? it makes no sense that the death penalty is more expensive than life in prison?
      it's prbly the costs of judicial proceedings I guess. This seems a gross injustice of our "Justice" system. & the length of time of appeals ughhh...
      I guess to ensure that no guilty person is ever executed but omg in a case like this its hard not to want swift & lethal justice.

      Seems like you're one of the few people in this comment section doing any critical thinking (though at this point any sort of thinking would do). Many are just taking Grande's opinion for granted, even though he's talking out of school--psychologist giving the impression that he's an expert on public policy and moral philosophy. He seems to be incorrectly using a psychoanalytic and utilitarian paradigm (this is how you end up with Sadism) as primary paradigms for addressing a justice issue.

    My mother was babysitting my nephew downstairs at my uncles house, and my three-year old nephew says, "Aunty, who's coming down the stairs?"
    My mother, also hearing the creaky stairs and paralyzed with fright, takes hold of my nephew and waits.
    Nothing.
    She gets up a few seconds later to find the front door (at the bottom of the stairs and which was previously closed) wide open, and no one in the house.
    My uncle lived two houses from the Petits on Sorghum Mill Drive in Cheshire and to this day, we all believe that Joshua Komisarjevsky was in my uncle's house that day. Someone was, and that's an affluent, well monitored area.
    Could have been tragic.

    Hi dr. Grande,
    I feel the most important part of your videos expose the reasons why these people commit these crimes. There are always reasons and it's important we understand and learn to correct these dysfunctional behaviors!
    I enjoy your work immensely but I cant necessarily say I agree with everything you say.
    For example if you told me to take a long walk on a short pier, I'd have to disagree because I cant swim!

    With respect to the questions about the deterrent effect of the death penalty: Crime statistics show that it has no deterrent power. For one thing, murderers don’t plan on getting caught. For another, some think that their superiority to the police will keep them one step ahead. Also, many killings (especially of partners) are impulsive. The killer is not pausing to consider consequences even when they are the obvious suspect and they’re so enraged that the thinking part of the brain is not engaged. My lawyer dad used to tell me that at the public hangings of pickpockets in days gone by in Europe (considered public holidays), pickpockets would work the crowd. Dunno where Pop heard that, but it sounds right.
