In the 90's there were a lot of "alternative" films made that grappled with the fear of getting the disease, of having it, etc. This montage reminded me a lot of those. They lacked subtlety, but they made their points with overt artistry.

To think people said this season sucked, it had so many deep messages and really emotional moments. We can agree to disagree. The idea of horror is to scare and/or disturb the audience. When you're just targeting a specific audience, you're doing it wrong. AHS has always had something for everybody. This season didn't have that. It was most definitely meant for one segment of the audience. I'm sure it was terrifying season for members of the LGBTQ+ community. For the lowly degenerate straight folk in the audience, not so much.

I am 60 now which means in 1981 I was a 19 year old gay man. I was delighted that they showed the first real press release about gay men dying of a rare cancer even though by the time that came out we were seeing guys dropping from all sorts of diseases that your body could typically fight off.
If anyone questions that the scenes Ryan depicted actually occurred yes they absolutely did. NO ONE knew how this thing was spreading at first. The theories were rampant and misinformation spread like wildfire. One of the rumours was that some right wing wacko was taking plutonium fragents and hiding them in bath houses and gay bars. First responders quite often wouldn't once they found out who was asking for help. If they did show, they came in hazmat suits.
The only thing they didn't depict this season and this kind of pisses me off a bit was that it was the community itself that stepped up to take care of those affected since the government washed it's hands of us until after Rock Hudson died (Reagan didn't say the word AIDS in public until after that). Lesbians were the ones who really stepped up and started organizing meal delivery, home checks, medication co-ops, etc., etc.
So BRAVO to Ryan and his team for showing a slice of what it was like for us back then. It was literal HELL.
Imagine the simple act of wanting to express sexual feelings for someone was like playing Russian Roulette for us back then. Sex = Death was a very real fact of life for us.
One week you would marvel at how handsome someone was or how magnificently built they were and the next time you saw them out and about a few weeks later and they were visibly detiorating and shortly after that they disappeared off the face of the Earth. MANY of them to be sent back home to some backwater village to die in the care of their families who up to that point probably didn't know they're son/brother/cousin were gay in the first place until the living skeleton they had turned into showed up.

    2) I have been a faithful ally since 1988. I may not have lived in New York but I was born and raised in New Orleans. I’ve worked in and around the French Quarters and was fortunate enough to call many beautiful people my friends, that eventually became my family.
    3) I said all of that to say this………………..Y’all got me all the way fucked up !!! (I’m my N’awlins voice). I made a nice comment about a beautiful scene. I was already in tears, but when Patrick told Gino, “I Love You “, then Patrick ate the apple sauce from the same spoon …….my heart swelled damnit!!! I was choked up!!!! It’a heartbreaking!!!!!

My grandmother's brother and best friend died due to the AIDS epidemic in the 1980's. I didnt know what to expect walking into this season of AHS but after watching I was driven to absolute tears now understanding what so many people suffered through. I know no one was there for my relative during this time. He died alone in a hospital whilst being unattended by staff who were afraid to go near him. It's quite awful what happened and now we as a society are being forced to face the horrors of the AIDS epidemic through art and horror

Ryan Murphy has surpassed himself with this season. It invokes many emotions and the fundamental sadness of these young men dying slowly, agonisingly and utterly alone. I can’t imagine how horrible it must’ve been . I thought the allegory of the leather man/AIDS a powerful statement, the lack of funding, education fed the fires of ignorance and fear. Ryan Murphy doesn’t sugar coat anything and that is as it should be, but I loved the angels who came for Theo, I thought that was a beautiful touch, despite everything, there is hope, Theo guiding Sam though the sins of his past was very moving and reminded the viewer viscerally what these people endured down to the core. I’m actually on the penultimate episode so I haven’t seen the end but I wanted to commend the actors on an excellent and moving portrayal ❤

This season hurt I wasn't ready for Mr Murphy to go here. This is a TRUE American Horror story and it was heartbreaking to watch because this wasn't ghosts or demons or some supernatural entity This was well researched and a true time in our history. I was in tears the last few episodes, this may not have my main cast of AHS but I truly believe this was one of the best seasons. I watched this with my mother who was raised by 2 gay gentlemen to see it and to hear what she witnessed and how real this really was, was absolutely devastating. I will not forget this season anytime soon I'm so sorry to anyone who lived through this and lost so many in this time 💔 my heart truly hurts for you and yours. BRAVO Mr Murphy 👏

I started thinking a few seasons ago that this was the AHS story Murphy needed to tell. I am glad that he did: there are a lot of ways to tell the story of that time, but a horror story is perfect. I have never known anyone killed by a clown, or the AntiChrist, or a coven of witches, but I had family that died of AIDS, and it was as relentless and senseless as any villain in the AHS canon.

REAL horror! I think that it’s also very timely with the pandemic right now since a lot of the same fears surfaced when Coronavirus/Covid-19 first wrapped her deadly arms around us. Immediately it seemed like if you get it, death is certain. Back in the early AIDS era it was the same with people dying in DROVES. And not just gay men. I think it was important for this story to be retold now and to remind folks that the fight for equality in ALL walks of our lives is still ongoing and is still in need of repair. This season was heartbreaking, informative and still very entertaining as well! I would call this, “On a very special season of AHS”. I’m very glad that Murphy didn’t give anything away beforehand either…not really. 🖤

My expectations were low when it first started, but this season was actually horrifically beautiful. Not sure how some of you people don't classify epidemics/pandemics as a genre of horror, but you should probably do some soul searching and look at 2020 lmao.

The AIDS crisis was much worse because of how people wasted away. It was also non-identified for years so we didn't know how to treat it.
The 2020 pandemic used what was learned from the AIDS crisis; intervention, isolating the virus, quarantine, all of it. With AIDS we didn't know what we were dealing with for a long time.

I was a teen during the nightmare of the AIDS epidemic and all through NYC early episodes, I was like " Man, this is just like AIDS..." None of the other AHS had this profound of an affect on me. Thank God that there are now meds and better resources to help HIV + folks live longer lives.

This season took me a while to get into because I am used to the 'in your face' kind or horror that AHS has delivered in past seasons. However, the slow building crime drama is a nice step in another direction.
The previous season endings (to me), have always struggled to stick the landing. Reason being, AHS has so many themes running around its storytelling, that when it comes time to end it, the finishing moments don't really add up.
However, this season, the theme was always in the background with the main characters trying to outrun their 'borrowed time'.
AHS can be amazing...and this season proves it.
Well done to everyone for this haunting yet beautiful American Horror Story.

I liked this season very much- it was cohesive, didn’t go off on goofy tangents, and tied up loose ends. I didn’t care for the finale, though. It was moving, and full of metaphors, but was devoid of horror or suspense. Still liked this season, though. I bet a lot of people will hate it because almost every character is gay. That’s a shame and people should be more open to learning about other time periods and lifestyles.

The Gay Agenda was pushed way to Hard. To the point were it was just Pathetic. This season was a Joke & doesn't even belong in the AHS franchise. Totally jumped shark. Just when I thought they couldn't make a worse season. So many things in this season didn't even make sense. Most people liking it cause its PC thing to do. i loved this season. yes it was very different from its base material, particularly those last two episodes which delved almost exclusively into metaphor and imagery, but it approached the subject of mass death and the sense of helplessness that comes along with it tactfully, artfully, and most of all realistically. I was born in 1995 to I didn't experience the aids epidemic thank god, but I've had friends and family die from preventable diseases and Patrick's death scene was the most realistic portrayal of that kind of death I've ever scene, including the lack of care from those who deemed him not worth the effort. Suffice to say this season made me cry. Hard.

  • @patriciabuck835

So poignant. I felt like I entered the realm of the heart-breaking reality. Perfectly done! There were so many dead ends at that time regarding what was going on and so little data combined with so much fear of the Unknown. People were being shunned and worse. Kicked out from where they lived. There were lost jobs. Rejection from friends and families, on and on. Tragedies. And what a prolonged, shitty death, sigh. So sad.

    • @justinodemon619

@@kcl6627 That makes no sense. The bar fire was an actual fire and many people had smoke inhalation from it. Not to mention the fact that Big Daddy was seen and corroborated by multiple people and physically interacted with multiple people as well. They also never explained what happened to the friend who got lost in the woods. All they said was "he's probably dead." How? And why was his body never found? There are so many plot holes surrounding the Big Daddy "metaphor" which really hurts the season for me.

This was my exact issue with the ending that "big daddy was always a metaphor". It just doesn't add up to the rest of the season. Enough with Satan and ghosts, real horror happened, those victims that disease the propaganda and hatred was the real horror. I cried so much , felt so much anger and sadness. This brought light to an issue so many tried burying and letting others forget. Those men were treated like animals, left to suffer in hospitals, slowly dying, while others stood there and watched, insulted them, didn’t even bring them food or water in that was suppose to be a HOSPITAL !!! Real shame so many people overlook the importance and the powerful messages this season had to offer…💔💔💔
