  • Another nailbiter game here! Sygg is rarely used, but is surprisingly difficult to deal with. This game is no exception, as my decision to leave Lightning Greaves in play winds up costing me dearly. I'm forced to navigate around a Rhystic Study, leading to a bunch of difficult decisions by mid game. Will my opponent's giant flyer be enough to seal the deal? Watch and find out.

You were thinking of Shadow of Doubt to stop searching.

I do remember the conversation I had with Nate that led to the testing of Honor-worn Shaku. He gets credit for mentioning it, along with a couple other things, like Ashnod’s Altar. My role in the conversation was that I was bullish on Shaku right away, and suggested that we definitely give it a run and try it. Some times I give Nate pushback on new cards for the deck, but not with Shaku. We were looking for something to make the deck a little more explosive, and Shaku definitely does that.

I think that ironically, this was a great game to demonstrate why I don't favor Feed the Swarm and am happy you're open to that point of view. Notice that you had all the tools to win without it, despite being mana shy against one of the worst enchantments to face. (Top 3 worst enchantments probably are Stony Silence, Sylvan Library, and Rhystic Study). We're getting such good cards that the flexibility doesn't feel worth the drop in card quality, much like the card Chaos Warp isn't up for consideration.
Shaku was one of my crazy ideas that came about during one of those "out of the box" periods where I added a group of cards to try and leverage the commander (we tested shaku but also a bunch of cards that ultimately got cut, like Paradise Mantle). It was super nice that you were receptive to the idea quickly, so we got double the testing on the card pretty early and therefore identified what a sleeper it was.

Ya know I’m wondering about having a skull clamp back up when going with the tevesh token plan. Carnage altar could be a card on the bubble. I’ve noticed there are times when this deck doesn’t draw. With the amount of acceleration, it could be used as an emergency. But it’s worse than divination where it only draws you one, but it can be done at instant speed.

I played this deck a couple of times online… my last game came and went when the opponent said quote “teach this little whore a lesson daddy” unquote. A true testament to the power level no doubt.

Great discussion of Ugin at the end. I think those matchups where Ugin is a desert twister are matchups where it is weakest. Minsc & Boo in particular is one where Ugin can have a really hard time staying in play. Since I have two very strong Minsc & Boo decks in my tournament metagame I am a little reluctant to remove goldspan dragon for Ugin, because I really like the ability of goldspan dragon to lock out Minsc. I think the Minsc & Boo matchup merits some specific testing of Ugin vs Goldspan before a final decision is made.
But since you are both completely convinced at this point on Ugin, I have put him back in too and will give him a long run. I will try to be better about pumping out 2/2 creatures with him.

Brian. I’m curious what % of the time you estimate you would lose this game? As dire as it got I felt you were probably 70%+ to win. Too many ways yo find that creature kill spell and you already had the way to kill greaves.
I also get playing around study but with mind twist in hand I think you hit a point where you play around it as best you can then in one turn give him 4/5 cards just to rip them away anyway.
It feels like you either totally play around it or don’t bother. (If you had crucible strip going for example).
Please keep games coming. Love the content and the discourse in the comments.

There's more ways you get punished for feeding them cards than you get punished for pretending it's a Sphere of Resistance. Lots of free counterspells in commander. They can even potentially play Misdirection if they want to, and suddenly mind twist is pointed at yourself, though that's pretty rare.

@@Kryptnyt sure but if you can keep them constrained on mana it limits what they can do. I guess I didn’t give enough consideration to free spells.

@@Kryptnyt Thank you for the perfect answer, couldn't have said it better myself. I think Daniel isn't appreciating how common and dangerous the free counterspells are, and how easily they could completely screw up the game plan of "Let's just cast a bunch of stuff under Rhystic Study and then Mind Twist them". I get 50+ game win streaks consistently because I plan for and even expect every awful contingency, no matter how remote. Most of the time that contingency doesn't arise, but occasionally the caution has me winning a game I'd otherwise lose. The goal is to play to absolute perfection. Part of that is accounting for fringe outcomes, and never taking risks you don't have to.

It's annoying, but you could work around it by drawing the cards on the same turn that you search for them.

Weird to play that as a format, just gonna make for some hprribly unbalaced and one sided matches, as shown...

    • @Ragtime4
      @Ragtime4 Před rokem +1

@@MrTandtrollet In my opinion, duel commander goes too far in the restrictive direction. Their rule for partners, for example, is extreme. Only one can be cast at all. A much more simple nerf would be to have the commander tax apply fairly, such that for us, rog costs 0, tevesh costs 7, and second rog costs 4 and so on.
It is still a fun format in my opinion, and much easier to find opponents for since commander is popular, while duel commander is not.

Relic of Legends is mostly a better version of Honor-Worn Shaku.
