  • Specs Gonzalez and Tego Sigel are joined by rapper and Aberdeen fan, Ransom FA to change football history. In this episode they take it back to 2009 to ask: ‘What if Celtic and Rangers had joined the Premier League?’
In 2009, Bolton chairman, Phil Gartside put forward a plan that would have changed the fabric of British football. Would Celtic and Rangers have been top four contenders? Would Sir Alex Ferguson have left Manchester United to join a club in his native Scotland? And what does this all mean for Aberdeen?

clearly there is a difference but the revenue of the spl in 18/19 season was more than that of the top leagues in switzerland, denmark, israel, croatia, czech republic and ukraine. a lot of these nations have teams with more points than rangers and celtic combined in the champions league this season (1 point) as it stands - these are: dynamo zagreb, shaktar donetsk, fc copenhagen and maccabi haifa (salzburg too but i’ll make an exception because of their talent pool + austrian league is worth more so it’s not on the list - although in the 18/19 season the austrian bundesliga only made £16M more in revenue than the spl)
the spl clearly has issues with population size but celtic and rangers have international fan bases and can perform well in europe occasionally (notably rangers last season) they don’t actually get past the round of 16 in the europa league very often at all (in fact spl teams have made the round of 16 only 3 times since 2015) - so whilst you do have a point, i feel like the spl as an institution could possibly do a bit more with what it has in terms of structuring and marketing. after all it has a lot to work with, it’s has incredible historic football clubs from a historic football nation which played in the first international friendly. it also has overseas following and european football history - it can’t be that hard to market

@@billder2655 My friend, the SPFL is not reaching it's potential, it has NOT been reaching it's potential for decades now. There is so much wrong with the game in Scotland, so it is being held back deliberately for several reasons. The Old Firm clubs don't want change because they are just waiting for ticket out of Scottish football to a more lucrative league. The other Prem clubs bow down to the Old Firm and the rest of league are just full of bitterness toward the top clubs in the Prem.
The game needs change from top to bottom and for everyone to get together and put aside petty agendas for the good of the game.

For me personally, Celtic and Rangers should join the EPL. The best time was around 98-2003 as both teams were at a high level especially Celtic. Celtic in that era constantly made the UCL and gave trouble to the best teams around. Even made the UEFA Cup final in 2003 I believe. There was talk of them joining the EPL in that era but obviously nothing came of it. I think Celtic would have been a shoe in to finish in and around the top 6 back in those days. And most likely would have been a top 4 team in some of those years. They weren't better than Man Utd or Arsenal but I think quality wise they were comparable to Liverpool, Newcastle Utd, Chelsea and Leeds who were the other top 6 contestants. Rangers would have been around mid table maybe slightly higher or slightly lower. It would have been a seamless transition in that era due to both clubs operating at a much higher level than they are today. Yes, Rangers recently made a Europa League final in 2022 but that was a one off thing imo. I watched many of their games last season in EL and they were just grinding out results and holding on for dear life. We saw how they got exposed in UCL this season and lost their domestic league title as well.
It would be a much harder transition these days. But with that said I think it would work if it were to happen, but certain things would have to take place. Obviously both Celtic and Rangers would have to be given the same money as newly promoted teams from the EFL Championship so that they could invest and improve their overall squads and talent pool. On top of this money I think the PL would have to give them AT LEAST another 100-200 million pounds. Again, to improve their squads and make both clubs more PL ready. So really it would be 200-300 million injection for both clubs to use on transfers. It's justified because this would 2 massive brands and 2 giant clubs joining a new league in a unprecedented move. You don't want to give them only the same amount as newly promoted Championship sides because Celtic and Rangers aren't much better than Championship sides. Maybe slightly. So if they only received the normal amount there's a good chance they could be in a relegation battle because they don't have the foundation of players yet. And with only 100 million or whatever it is that newly promoted sides receive they wouldn't be able to drastically improve their squads in comparison to other EPL sides. There would be no point of doing the project if you're setting both Celtic and Rangers up for a potential relegation battle. Defeats the whole purpose of having them join. You give them 2 or 3 times maybe even 4 times the normal amount in hopes that they can quickly build a squad capable of finishing at least mid table or higher. And after that they're on their own.
Let's be honest, both Glasgow clubs are among the biggest clubs in all of the UK. I would argue historically only Man Utd, Liverpool and maybe Arsenal are on that level. Maybe Chelsea, Newcastle and Nottingham Forest if you want to be very generous. But for me they are the biggest along with Man Utd and Liverpool. They would obviously have the stadiums and the support needed. I think it would be good for rivalries vs the English clubs as Celtic and Rangers would be based in Scotland so there would be that element of rivalry which would add extra spice to the PL.
There are 2 potentially big problems though. #1 - What would happen to the Scottish Premiership and the rest of the Scottish clubs? Would they continue as is without Celtic and Rangers? If those 2 clubs were to leave international interest in the league would instantly become non existent and it could have massive financial consequences for the league and the clubs in it. Would these Scottish teams be allowed into the Championship, League 1, League 2, etc? And become part of some type of new British football system where Scottish and English teams play in the same leagues? And #2 - Would Celtic and Rangers even want to join the EPL? Both clubs have won over 50 league titles, and are among the most decorated clubs in football. Would they want to join the EPL for more more and exposure at the expense of becoming far less dominant and going through potentially very long stretches without silverware? These are all questions that would arise and need answers.
As a football fan I'd love to see them in a newly revised EPL which includes them but most likely it won't happen. Can you imagine these two clubs getting relegated? How sad that would be. And while Rangers were relegated before that was as punishment and not based on what actually happened on the pitch. Interesting topic though!

Rangers wouldn’t have been Liquidated in 2012 and Celtic with their multi Billionaire Chief Shareholder would have invested heavily on new signings had they been given a free pass into the Premier League.
Which of course will never happen as Turkeys don’t vote for Christmas.
Celtic Park currently has a 60k Capacity but has scope for expanding this to 80k by replacing the main stand and tying it in with the rebuilt part of the Stadium built in 94/95 .
This would make Celtic Park the largest Club venue in the U.K. and of course increased revenues as a result.
Don’t kid yourselves we couldn’t fill it because the biggest attendances ever recorded at Club games in the U.K. (and Europe for that matter) belong to one Club.
Couple this with a fanbase that is both north and south of the Border way support would also be massive.
You will hard pushed to find a large Town or City in the U.K. that doesn’t have a contingent of Celtic or Rangers fans in it.
Our League is holding us back as Clubs but in the mega rich environment of The Premiership all bets are off.

English fans seem to think Celtic and rangers would move to the epl but continue to operate off the Scottish tv deal. They don’t seem to understand they’d get the same tv money, meaning they can quickly challenge for world class signings.
Celtic Park is 60,000 plus. Ibrox is 50,000 plus. There are 16 EPL stadiums smaller than Celtic Park, and 7 with less than half the capacity. Add in clubs like Lester, Blackburn and Southampton who survived for a long time with stadiums around half the size.
Celtic had Van Dijk, Tierney, wanyama, ki, Forster. Players who all did well in England. Do you honestly believe they’d leave Celtic to play in a stadium half the size if Celtic are in the same league and can pay the same, if not better wages?
English fans seem to think being in the epl automatically makes you a massive club. Most of the English league is smaller than Celtic and rangers. They just have access to big money off the back of clubs like manyoo, Arsenal and Liverpool.
Chelsea weren’t a big club until the epl kicked off. Then they became a nice option for foreign owners because they were in London.
If Celtic and rangers entered the epl for 24/25, they wouldn’t be playing with the current squads. They’d invest heavily because they now have access to the same tv that keeps Bournemouth in the league with their 11,000 seater stadium.
Celtics current squad is good enough to survive the first season if they had to. Rangers isn’t. They have decent players, but they’ve shown they don’t have the mental strength.

Almost all would never have been bought if we played in English football. Bigger budget, attractive to more players. And sell out crowds week in week out. Rangers and that other team. Would bring in even more fans from home in the U.K. and from foreign countries. They are a bit of Snobbery from England when it comes to this topic. And I am proud to be Scottish and I think we need to stay and improve Scottish football as it is on the up. Smaller clubs have the chance to join our leagues. I think also it would hurt The SPL. Sky and BT money would not be as much for the right to show. I would like to see a U.K. cup . Within the 4 countries. This would be a good way to test the water a little but unless we have the same income on gates and tv. It would be next to impossible to win. I am not British so take that into account if necessary but I honestly think football is changing and the Premier League should absorb Scottish teams. Continental Europe is likely creating a Super League to compete with the Prem and the Prem should expand to accommodate modern football. I would prefer everything to stay the same but that won't happen, we need to take measures not to concentrate football's power in just one market. An expanded version of the Premier League would be big enough to compete with the Super League. Beyond that It would exciting to watch Man Utd play Celtic and Liverpool, Chelsea, Villa going up north to play Aberdeen or Rangers. I would even consider something with the Irish football, maybe allowing them to join Championship or League 1, 2.

IF Celtic and Rangers could survive 1 season in the prem with their current squads (which is doubtful, especially in Rangers case right now) then the money they would get from that one season would easily secure clubs of their stature a top half finish. Looking at the current squad and making a judgement about this is pretty futile. Even now they would give most of the bottom half of the prem a good game and probably pull off the odd surprise result against the "big 6" teams here or there. Celtic and Rangers have massive support and that is what counts. Look at the money Man U generate just from having the massive support they have. With the kind of exposure Celtic and Rangers would get being in the prem, they could easily win it in a few seasons as the revenue they would generate would start to rival the big clubs.
Realistically, the only thing that can secure a competitive future for Ranger, Celtic and all of Scottish football, is first and foremost independence for Scotland, so we are no longer seen as just a junior partner of England in TV deals etc, and competent SFA and SPFL to get us better deals. Without those, the cycle of us just being a bit bad in Europe and only competing with each other will never be broken.
