Scottish football, if Celtic and Rangers played in England

  • It is a question that has been asked up and down the country in the past generation: just how well would Celtic and Rangers do if they played in English football?
In perpetuity Celtic and Rangers have dominated Scottish football from Ibrox and Celtic Park in Glasgow.
1985 was the last time a club not named Celtic or Rangers won the league title in Scotland. Despite competitive teams like that Alex Ferguson Aberdeen outfit, as well as Hearts who irregularly challenged in the late 80s and early 90s and the Dundee United squad that made a European final in 1987, the Old Firm couple have claimed 106 of the 124 Scottish league championships.
Both Rangers and Celtic have won European honours, and both appeared in UEFA Cup finals in the 2000s, to show that their success isn’t just limited to domestic football.
Scottish football, in patches was the dominant brand of football once upon a time.
From when Scotland developed passing football in the 19th century, when everybody else dribbled, to the 1960s and 70s when Scotland featured on the world stage against an absent England and both Old Firm clubs ascended to glory in Europe.
The advent of the Premier League, and its money, has seen the gap between English and Scottish football widen dramatically.
Speaking of money: would Scottish football suffer without Rangers and Celtic, or would it flourish?

This really made me think of: What if all the Welsh from the English Football League Pyramid joined the new Welsh League in 1992?

I think a good idea would be cross-border Pan-Great Britain cups on top of domestic and European football.
I support keeping the domestic Scottish, Welsh and English leagues and European football. But to have cross border cups on top of domestic and European soccer.
The Scottish have been allowed to have Welsh and Northern Irish sides in the Scottish Challenge Cup. So UEFA should be OK with cross-border trophies.
Travel would not be as tough as many trips in European football, or in professional sports leagues in Australia, the USA, Canada, Mexico, Russia, China, or India.
We could have all Scottish Premiership sides not in Europe, entered into the Football League Trophy. Or we could have a Pan-Great Britain Premier Cup involving all Scottish Premiership sides, and selected Welsh Cymru Premier sides. Plus also either EPL, or EFL sides.
Or all Welsh Cymru Premier sides and selected Southern Scottish sides entered into the FA Trophy.
Or a Welsh Gold Cup with all Welsh Cymru Premier sides, plus the B teams of the big club sides in Scotland and England.
Imagine games like Aberdeen v Coventry City, Glasgow Rangers v Man Utd, Glasgow Celtic v Man City, Newcastle United v Falkirk, Liverpool v Hibernian, Dundee United v Luton Town, Wolverhampton Wanderers v Inverness CT, Motherwell v The New Saints, Connah's Quay Nomads v Hearts.
These trophies would enable Scottish, Welsh, and English sides to continue to win national trophies, enter European trophies but also have cross-border cups on top of domestic and European soccer.
It would be transformational for Welsh soccer.
It would do no damage to English soccer.
It would be fun for Scottish soccer.
