  • In today's episode of Lab Coat Garage, our product specialist Joey breaks down what is orange peel and how to remove it.
    First, what is orange peel? We have all seen vehicles with wavy, uneven paint that has the appearance and texture of an orange peel. This is cause by many factors which we discuss in this easy to follow guide.
    Understanding the cause of these blemishes is one thing but removing them and restoring a mirror finish is another. Machine polishing extracts paint imperfections like oxidation, scratches, swirls and etches but even the most aggressive combination of compound and cutting pad aren't enough to even the paintwork. Wet Sanding with a fine grit sand paper diminishes a fine layer of clear coat for a uniform surface that now can be polished to perfection, revealing a mirror shine that is smooth as glass.

    I had a customer who hired me to remove orange peel after getting his car resprayed.
    Came out very nice after wet sanding first with 1500 grit followed by 3000 grit then compounded and polished.
    This is a great way to make good money if anyone gets a similar job.

    But at the same time - many manufacturers assure that there is orange peel on their cars. The peaks of the orange peel will make the clear coat somewhat more resistant to scratches and swirls. So there is an advantage with the orange peel as well :)

    For light to medium orange peel, what grit should you start with and how do you know you've gone deep enough to remove it?

    • @ChemicalGuys
      @ChemicalGuys  Před 5 lety

      We recommend using a light cutting polish such as V36 with an Orange Hex-Logic Pad to refine the surface to remove medium orange peel. If need be, try using a more aggressive approach such as V34 Hybrid Compound and an Orange Hex-Logic Cutting Pad. Happy Detailing!

  • @idrivearttabletennis
    @idrivearttabletennis Před 5 lety

    Good video but I'd add you want to start with the least aggressive method and try that first. I'd probably start with a polish that has minimal cutting ability and move to something more aggressive if that did not work. If you get to where you need to wet sand it would be best to measure the clearcoat thickness (depth) before you start. Just realize that if you cut through the clearcoat, you're probably going to have to repaint the area (or the entire car). I've used 3000 grit before, then polished it out just to see if that did the job but I used sandpaper as the last resort. Just be careful or you may ruin the paint. Chemical Guys has all the stuff you need. Make the primary goal: do no harm.

    What if you have orange peel on base coat and clear has not been sprayed yet? Should it be sanded before clear coat?

    • @jasond869
      @jasond869 Před 2 lety

      No, better to sand it off and paint again.

    How do we store our clay blocks? I had some and after a while they got stuck to the inside of the bag and I had to throw them out

    • @ChemicalGuys
      @ChemicalGuys  Před 5 lety +1

      To store your Clay Block, we recommend that once you're done using it, to rinse it with clean water and let it air dry before placing it into a plastic container or back into it's original packaging with the sheet placed onto the side with the synthetic clay. Also, make sure to keep them in an area that's room temperature and away from heat.

    Wow, nobody on any video said that orange peel is not a chemical or any extract. It is just an effect of the paint looking like an orange peel. I had to figure this out the real hard way. It's like pulling teeth to get some information on the net.

    Hi
    I have a question and really could use the help. I painted my car recently. I think I did overall a good job but can see orange peel around the whole vehicle. I washed it and the car looked like glass but then when it dried it turned back to orange peel. Any thoughts on how I could fix this? Thank you

    • @ChemicalGuys
      @ChemicalGuys  Před rokem +1

      Hey! Color sanding is necessary to refine the orange peel and reveal a smooth finish which would then be compounded and polished to perfection.

    all of that makes total sense. doesn't make sense how come cars are coming from the FACTORY with orange peel.....

    • @joshmeixell5333
      @joshmeixell5333 Před 5 lety +1

      It’s comming like that from the factory because the factory does not care they just want to keep pushing cars out the door. Orange peel doesn’t necessarily mean the paint is not right it just does not look the way it should. But to a car factory that only cares about quantity not quality it’s fine to them

      josh meixell that’s the saddest part. I noticed orange peel on a brand new quattroporte my boss bought.... yeah on a versa, ok I don’t expect much, but 180k car you expect it to be perfect.... really sad.
