    Excellent Video Nic! I just sprayed an aftermarket fiberglass cowl hood for my car. I didn't have a paint booth to use so it's full of dirt nibs and a decent amount of orange peel. I think with this tutorial I can safely flatten it out some and make it look great. I know how much clear is on there since I put it on. I think I should have plenty.

  • @williamgrissom9022
    @williamgrissom9022 Před 2 lety +1

    Great info. Had to google it, ONR = Optimum brand "No Rinse Waterless Wash", a liquid cleaner popular with detailers, almost a cult following.
    Others suggest starting w/ 1000 or 1200 grit, then right to buffing compound. I used 1000 wet-sand on a whole newly painted car and got it to look like your post-sand stage. I didn't use a block but rather used 4 fingers on the paper, which gives better feel. I wiped the sandpaper across, not pulled/pushed along my fingers, which avoids cutting troughs. Sometimes it would grab, because removing a lot of color build-up (single-stage polyurethane, no hardener). I kept a wet rag busy keeping the surface flooded and wiping away paint debris. I'll do another pass w/ 2000 grit. Waiting on a wool pad and "Malco Super Duty Heavy Cut Compound", but best to wait a few weeks anyway to let the paint harden. I wanted to attack the orange-peel while the paint was soft (2 days after painting).
    I cut into the primer while sanding a few runs and other oops, so I'll use a touch-up gun there. That is the advantage of single-stage vs base-clearcoat, you can respray any bad spots and easily repair the future scratches and dents which will occur, if you keep left-over paint. Some think I should spend $5K on a pro paint job, but I only paid $1K for my car (1965 Dart) and love living as a resourceful bottom-feeder just to tic-off the wife and kids ("just write a check" types).

    This is basically a two step sequence, 2000 grit and then a compound buff - very different from almost every one of the 10 or more videos I’ve watched to remove orange peel. One guy uses 5 different grits of wet sand (1500 up to 5000) then wool buff, then foam buff, washing between each step. His finish was flawless, not just a “match the rest of the paint” type job. This guy’s results look pretty good, but there are higher quality levels out there. I would watch several other videos before settling for a 2 step job. For what it’s worth...

  • @J_Brian
    @J_Brian Před 4 lety +3

    Really great job. Honestly one of the best videos I’ve seen who go into all the details. What would be the best way to get rid of clear coat lines? After removing the tape from a section of the vehicle. Wet sand? Then compound? Then polish?

    • @nicbowen38
      @nicbowen38  Před 4 lety +1

      JosephF1992 thank you! If you are referring to clear coat lines after having a section repainted, I would put a piece of painters tape on the low side of the line, and only sand the high side. I would not chase perfection in that scenario because you might go through the clear before flattening the line. I would highly recommend a paint depth gauge for that job. Yes, compound the sanding scratches out, then polish any hazing caused by the compounding step
