Great video Russ!! Ty for the shoutout!! 🩷 I agree, this might be the last generation where we fully get to own our physical carts. Having a way to physically back up our copies is a really great investment. I carry around a tiny little case like that too, and walking around with the potential to lose $500 worth of games is always really scary lmao

The "click switching" of the games is a deal killer for me....but the idea is intriguing. Hopefully they could put some custom software on it down the road that could make it not need to do that. You can use the dumper to allow you to make a separate SD card per game for a proper backup and just pop it into the MIG to play it if you want. SD cards are cheap enough to allow for that. Good idea, just needs some polish and updates to get it going.

The in and out thing blows.
Just worthless in this v1 version.

@@livinliciousthe issue is that if it had a menu the ability to ban the switch would be even easier. The likely solution is to add a button to the top of the mig switch so you can flip through games without having to worry about sliding the cartridge in and out

If thats a deal killer then just get an adapter that allows you to swap games outside the Switch, people have already shown that works to trigger a swap for the MIG and you dont have to worry about your card slot breaking because Nintendo cut costs on it like the sticks on their controller

I don't remember where exactly I saw this, either on youtube or a short video from twitter or so, but there are switch docks that let you "reinsert" switch cartridges using a remote, the intended use for them was to have multiple cartridges attached to the dock and swap between them but it also works for the MIG switch

when I found out you have to pop it in and out to switch games all my care for the product was thrown out the window.
I did however find a differnt product, there are 3rd part dock extrenions that plug into your switch's cart slot and let you have 4 games "plugged into" your switch at once and switch between them with the press of a buttion either on a remote, or on the dock extention.
so I will probably end up getting on of those.

For the stated purpose of switch game backups, I think the dumper plus mig switch cartridge are reasonable.
You would never put 100 games on the sd card. You'd put a few games that you're currently playing on it. Then switching between them isn't very cumbersome.
The other positive compared to a modded switch is that theoretically you can play online without a ban.

This actually does make sense for me since I'm literally in the same situation. Bunch of physical games, the carts are taken out and put into a mass storage (i have the same case even but it also houses my vita games). That said, I feel like its a little too soon to get something like this since the switch is still Nintendo's main focus so they have more eyes on this right now. It only takes one software update to render it useless unless the Mig company accounted for that and this bypasses any and all updates they do going forward.
I will likely pick up the dumper though since i do want a back up of my things.
[edit] watching a bit further, yeah... having to re-insert the flash cart a bunch of times is really not good for the hardware so ill pass on this iteration, if they ever add a selector on the cart itself then I might consider it later if i can get my hands on the dumper before that.

I think this would be a lot more practical if maybe it had a button on it instead of the ejecting it over and over situation it has now. That feels like it would lead to the cartridge slot wearing out really quickly just to find the game you want to play.

Good review! I like the idea of backing up all my physical games to a flash cart, but this one doesn't seem feasible yet. Changing between games just seems unintuitive right now. I mean, currently you can just upgrade your Switch's micro SD and then just buy digital copies of your games as well without the need for a cart at all. I am curious if they might be able to update or iron things out with this flash cart to make it more appealing to the average Switch user.

I'm waiting for mine to hopefully arrive this or next month (with the dumper, that is). I mainly wanted to pick it up just because of how useful it would be, but at the same time I started using Yuzu like 2~3 weeks before Nintnedo killed it and I kinda like the idea of just using my ROG Ally to play my backups due to the better hardware and being able to record videos of the gameplay on the go, which is something I can't do on my Switch 😅
1 thing I missed in your video though was comparing the performance of a original cart VS MIG switch. I recall some other guy on CZcams did a comparison and it did seem like the loading times are slightly longer with the MIG switch, so it would be nice to see something regarding this just to see if it's confirmed or maybe just a special case, since I've only seen 1 video talking about that.

Honestly as a user of the Steam deck to play his switch games, I'd rather have the dumper, but what would make this a killer deal is an accessory as it's unlikely we'll get unsigned code running on a unmodified Switch to allow for menu functionality anytime soon, but rather something the size of a PS2 memory card with a small LCD display, a couple buttons, and a slot that fits the MIG Switch. Use a cheap micro controller to power on the MIG communicate with it, and allow you to pick the ROM. Depending on how they've implemented this, we're talking a few dollars with of materials to build and maybe 20-25 dollar retail price.

I can see myself using one, or a competing product, to do what you mentioned: Backup all my physical game carts so I don't have to carry an expensive collection with me. But before I would do so, they have to redesign the product so that it works like some of the multi-game carts that exist for the Switch, such as the Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters Collection, and the Dragon Quest I-III Collection, wherein you plug the cartridge into your Switch, and after it reads it, you see each individual game on your Home Screen, as if you had downloaded them all digitally. That small but important change would get me to buy one!

Even if Nintendo had legal evidence to go after individuals for $6000 games damages, 10,000s of those legal fees. How many pirates would be bankrupt, instead of actually pay?
Trying to sue millions of people at the cost of thousands each will lose more money than it recovers. So they're strategic with their suits both to show they aren't permitting the copyright infringement and to stop the largest swath they can.

He isn't paying a thing because he says he doesn't have the money. Yuzu probably isn't gonna pay the 2 million. I don't know how rich they are. 6:14 - It's an interesting perspective but I don't know, maybe I'm seeing the glass half empty but assuming people will act in good faith and practical usage for dumping personal games may not always be the case. Jeff did discuss this briefly in his video but I also share the feeling if that dumper makes the process very easy, we might end up with some who have no desire to play the games but decide to dump cart, throw those files up online and resell the carts to someone else. Just to watch the chaos for Nintendo.. For those downloading and playing pirated games, they are aware and if a ban happens, that's the consequence but somewhere I wonder if some unsuspecting person will get hit by this madness. So I have mixed feelings. There may finally be a benefit to sealed Switch games for the most discerning collectors who want absolute certainty that their cart data hasn't been dumped.

But are these additional files specific to the cartridge they're on? The 3DS had a similar thing where every individual cartridge has a unique private header, but it wasn't tied to the specific game. It just had to be valid, signed by Nintendo, and different from any other private header signed into Nintendo's servers at the time. So with the Sky3DS people would dump one private header and then use it with whatever games they downloaded.
The Switch may fix this oversight, and with any other console I'd fully expect it would. But Nintendo has a history of not doing obvious things.

The end result we would all want is to have a cart that's able to be put into a console, modded or not, and pop up as an original game, with online support. We're nearly there. This is the start, kind of a janky way of getting it to work, but, you can see the possibilities. I'd give this another year before they either implement their own way to a)put xci or nsp, drag and drop onto your SD card and b)a better way to select which game you're wanting it to be, be it with software or a que system that you make on your SD card to have some sort of order of your games.
