    I grew up conservative baptist christian. "homosexuality=abomination," "evolution is man's attempt to play God," "women are subserviant to men," the whole works. I was also homeschooled from grade 4 onwards to going to a christian university, and the two times a week I saw other people was always at a church function. I found your channel when I was 19 because of a collab you did with OT, who I had found a couple months prior. You are the biggest reason I finally have learned so much and was able to get out of those mindsets/rhetorics, and for a long time this was the only place that could give me a genuine smile after I had forgotten what that felt like. Thank you.

      Welcome to the real world!
      Just a warning from someone who's been there - you're likely to spend the next 20 years finding all the weird little beliefs that were dumped in your brain as a child, and rooting them out one at a time. It's satisfying every time, but also frustrating when you realise the task *still* isn't complete.
      At least it gets easier over time.

    The artist wrongly adding 50% per character to the base commission was one of the most frustrating thing I've ever witnessed. At one point I started trying to explain it out loud without realising, because I was so frustrated, which led to having to actually explain it to my family, because they were wondering what the hell I was talking about lol

      What got me was when it was in so many words explained that each additional character was 50% of the base price, the other one still didn't get it. But the best moment was when asked what is 50% *of* 30, they used a calculator to show 30 *plus* 50%.

    • @acuddle
      @acuddle Před 4 měsíci +107

      I really think the artist realized, somewhere along the line, that his math was wrong and just played (astronomically) dumb, at least when the commissioner put their back against the wall with the "do you know what 30 divided by 2 is ?" question. Without that, they would've at least had the goodwill to play right (learning their mistake in the process), which was the commissioner's desire.

It makes me wonder if the people who believe these claims are suffering amnesia or something. Especially if they think the age cutoff is 7 years.

      As someone who semi believes in spiritual stuff, claims like that one give the rest of us a bad rap.
      I can distinctly remember being 3 years old, never seeing ghosts or spirits and never knowing anything about auras until much much later. However I did (and still do) have distinct memories of past lives, and I talked to our pets and the trees in the backyard as though they were people. I was... a lonely kid.
      The thing about spirituality is that it's never quantifiable in any way, and it's never the same experience for everyone. It's like life, everyone goes on their own journey, much of it subjective and a great deal of it philosophical. So these people trying to push their specific spiritual beliefs really don't accomplish anything except making the rest of us look nuts. And pushing their beliefs onto kids is especially toxic because kids, and also adults, can be pretty suggestible at times, and who wouldn't want to believe they have special powers? It can be a slippery slope.
      People who do experience the same phenomena will naturally cluster in groups and explore their experiences together, but that takes time and we're usually pretty quiet about it. Going around making bold claims just gets a lot of eyes, and sometimes heads, rolling. After all, it wasn't that long ago they burned people at the stake for being weird, and having a mental issue used to get you locked up in an asylum for life. Society has never been forgiving to anything out of the ordinary.

      Completely agree, but just one little nitpick. That person wasn't a nurse. They said they're a medical coder. Basically, this means they take what's in the doctor's notes and convert it to a set of numbers which are then sent to the insurance company for billing purposes. Medical coders have some training on medical terminology, but not on how stuff actually works physiologically.
      Nurses are educated in anatomy, physiology, and pharmacology. Sure, there are a few (who are disproportionately vocal on Facebook) who are so wrapped up in ideology that they ignore their education, but the vast, vast majority of nurses have better sense than that.
      And no disrespect intended to coders. Of course the majority of them also have better sense. It's just that because coders don't have actual medical education, it's less shocking than if the person were a nurse.

    As someone who commissions art frequently, the percentage per character argument hurt so bad. Making extra characters cost a percentage of the base price in a commission is incredibly common and I have not seen a single artist argue that it works this way. The sunscreen : seatbelt one is an interesting point. There was some research a while ago about people's caution or confidence while driving - and statistically, people drive more recklessly when they think their car is safer. A person who believes that their car has all the safety features of an empty soft-drink can will drive very cautiously. Put them in a car and tell them about its smart braking and yada yada, and their driving style will change noticeably.
    So yeah, if you took their seatbelt away they would drive more carefully. But if you put them in a car with every safety feature imaginable and make them watch a vid about how dangerous driving is, that will probably have a similar effect - without endangering anyone by taking their seatbelt away.

    Im a dental hygiene student and i love hearing people debunk oral health myths so thank you so much but let me just add a few things:
    A lot of people are worried about fluorosis and avoid fluoride for that reason but you actually cannot get fluorosis once your teeth have erupted. And contrary to popular belief, it is purely cosmetic, it may stain the teeth however teeth with fluorosis are actually far stronger and resistant to cavities. Also, fluoride levels in the water are controlled to a degree that you will not get fluorosis unless you are somehow also taking a fluoride supplement prescribed by a pediatrician- but they will research whether or not your water is fluoridated before making that call to not give you excessive amounts
    There are two methods of receiving fluoride:
    -topical (applied directly to teeth, but not injested) think toothpastes, fluoride varnishes and gels
    -systemic (injested and distributed through the enamel of developing teeth)
    Fluoride in water is an example of systemic fluoride and most benefits children with developing teeth. It is a very effective way of providing protection against tooth decay and reach impoverished children who may not otherwise have access to dental care. And those are the kids most effected by adults who create these conspiracy theories, because they are unfortunately the ones who will have to deal with dental pain, will need expensive restorative work, and more than likely they may not be able to afford fillings/crowns/root canals to save their teeth and will have to have them pulled at a very young age.
    In some places, fluoride is a naturally occuring element in water, and that's how we discovered its health benefits. Fluoride is not some weird chemical. It's a natural protective factor that actually works.
    I find it funny how the same parents that hate fluoride (something natural that benefits your kids health) are also the ones rubbing them with essential oils that may actually be harmful because "it's natural"

    Back in Highschool, my Foods, or cooking teacher wanted to show us how oil can be substituted with other things in baking recipes. So, she assigned each cooking group a different item to substitute their oil in a recipe with. The options were Applesauce, Mayo, Avocadoes and I think Olives? My group had mayo. I skipped the day we were supposed to cook our assignment so that I wouldn't have to try those foods. The next day I asked my classmates how the recipes went. Everyone agreed they were downright awful. They were all terrible consistencies, flavors, didn't bake properly, etc... I am forever glad I skipped that day.

    Regarding the twitter artist 50% thing:
    The artist not only applied compounding instead of simple percentage to their pricing, they also got THEIR OWN math wrong: 13 characters at compounding 50% from a $45 start isn't $8757, it's $5838.59. Their posted calculation for the flat colors example also shows why they're wrong: They added an additional step. So not only are they bad at percentages, but they can't even count to 13 properly either.

    As a fellow quiet art kid, I can say with confidence this was someone who also sat in the corner doodling through math classes. In my case though I made sure to pay attention when we were learning a new topic. My brain picks up the material pretty well but doesn’t work through math problems very quickly and has trouble recalling even basic addition when it comes to mental math which I believe is just how my autism decides to manifest itself as I seem to struggle with numbers in various aspects, even reading dates and sequences of numbers out loud will trip me up without fail when I otherwise read beautifully. It often didnt matter how well I knew the material, I was always the last one finished with math worksheets, and math tests could take me several class periods at times. I obviously avoid doing any math now that I’m no longer in school, and if math if required, if I can’t outsource it, it can take half my day or I might end up getting frustrated and giving up on it altogether.

      I had basically the same thought even though I'm not in this community. The big red flag to me was fact the advert says 50% of the base price (and the one asking for the commission pointed it out multiple times), but the texts, towards the end, kept insisting that it was 50% of the total. The discrepancy felt too perfect in its detail, and the language was too precise for someone just very bad at math. I could kinda believe someone being extremely dumb with a calculator and not thinking twice about it (this series has shown us crazy stuff), but this little detail definitely felt deliberate.
      I love how there's even a point where they're like "See, you add 50% to the base price, and then, you add 50% to the sum", like, yeah, as you can see, this isn't false advertisement, your honor.

    It's not the Normal Force that holds the apple on the tree. It would be the Tension from the peduncule/stick/stem. The idea that what we “know” can change based on new information drives them absolutely wild. Tbf, not all Physics.
      If you don't use math, some quantum physics turns from explanations to simple statements that don't make any sense.
      This is because human intuition doesn't line up with the world of the very small.
      But then again at this point it's more of an argument about the definition of "explaining".
      Does someone need to understand at the end of an explanation for it to be an explanation?

    • @LetMeFLY649
      @LetMeFLY649 Před 4 měsíci +7

      i mean yes most of the simpler concepts of physics don't need mathematics to properly explain them, math really only becomes a requirement when delving into the more complex sectors of physics when it comes to large scale phenomena's that become harder to fully 'see' due to scale or when it comes to concepts and figures that rely on mathematics to explain the possibility of their existence. then again most of the stuff that requires math are tailored to specific professions that dabble in higher academics, something that most people won't need or even use for a majority or even the entirety of their lives
      tl;dr: technically yeah, you don't really need math to explain most physics.

    •  Před 4 měsíci +4

      @@AliceB0, the problem with any non-math explanation of QM is that, at best, it will be a likeness that might be sufficient for explaining whatever aspect of the quantum realm the person explaining it has in mind, but then people get it into their heads that they understand it and they take that likeness and they run with it to places that it really has no business going to.
      I don't know if you're a physics person but if you are, I'm guessing you find that annoying too. So does a person have to understand the explanation for it to be an explanation? No, but it's really effing annoying when they _think_ that they do. ;-)

    Minor note: For the apple thing, the force holding them up wouldn't be the normal force, which is what the N stands for. The normal force is for an object sitting on a surface, and is sort of like a compressive force. Apples are suspended, so it's a tension force, not compression, more comparable to a stretched spring.

    • @Buriaku
      @Buriaku Před 4 měsíci +12

      It depends on the definition of the normal force. Some definitions only include contact with a surface and some include all forces directly opposite to another specific force. On a slope for example your normal force is not normal (ie perpendicular) to the surface. If you want a source with a different definition than yours try the German wikipedia page for normal force, which includes forces on cylindrical objects (like the apples stem) and explicitly mentions compression and tension. (Also technically the normal force is not what compresses the apple, because it is caused by the Pauli exclusion principle, so the compressive force is gravity. ... But then again gravity is actually the opposite according to Einstein so who cares XD.)
