  • We are in the Ifoghas mountains, in the far north of Mali. Fierce clashes are taking place between French troops and jihadists. In the fighting, four jihadists are killed. But among the bodies is a survivor, a child soldier of just fourteen. Our reporter, Matthieu Mabin, was with the French forces as the attack happened. He brings us this exclusive report.

I love how some idiots try to dismiss France's brilliant deployment in Mali by saying that the Foreign Legion isn't really French... It's absurd and wrong.
They also tend to forget that 8% to 10% of the US armed forces are foreign-born personnel. That's in fact considerably more than in the French military, including the Legion.
    Good job France.

I love the fact that the French military is part of the NATO alliance. They seem a bit different to me. Kind of quirky. I can't put my finger on it but being different, and professional of course, brings something new to the table. Some new capabilities, tactics, a different way of thinking and eventually solving problems. And problems are something you can always expect will arise in the warfare. No amount of preparing, training and re training can't foresee all the imagined combinations of situations that could happen.. We've seen it in one of the best prepared and most trained for operation in military history - Operation Neptune spear or better known as the Bin Laden raid.. I bet nobody saw that classified stealthy Blackhawk crashing down at the beginning of the mission. That is why special forces members are highly intelligent and capable to improvise and reach decisions in highly stressful and dangerous situations...
This is why I think that the French approach in a joint operation of massive scope, would contribute greatly. I don't wan't to be that guy that keeps calling the French cowards for capitulating so soon in the WW2 and made Paris an open city.. Let bygones be bygones. French military force is a formidable fighting element with advanced and, again, different approach to their weapons design. The only thing that surprises me is their perceived lack of interest in developing new anti ship missile to replace the venerable (and old) Exocet. French Navy needs a new, possibly hypersonic, anti ship missile to be capable of sinking any foe in the open ocean.

French Foreign Legion is at 7,000. Troupes de Marine is around 20,000 in number. You are wrong. No European country has 300,000 combat troops.

Is France the only tough country left ,that keeps a big Infantry!?!?
Legion has 8000 strongs infantry ready to kill
French Army has at least 300,000
French Marines has at least 100,000 in they're infantry.
while in US we only have maybe 40-50 thousand infantrymen in the usmc
and maybe 100,000 in the US army .

Holly shit.. That is some seriously inhospitable terrain. I can't stand the heat, summer or any of that bullshit. But marching for dozens of miles with full on tactical gear and boots while lugging up to a 100 pounds of supplies, and all that at temperatures exceeding 45 degrees C... I wouldn't/couldn't do it if these guys had incomes like Jeff Bezos, let alone for a few measly thousands of $ per month...

France aren't big enough to "Europe's Army". Maybe add Britain and Germany and you'll have something.
