Mali's Jihad Crisis: The Looming Threat of Terror | African Politics Documentary

  • In 2012, Northern Mali fell into the hands of armed jihadist groups. Operation Serval, led by France, was immediately launched to liberate the occupied territory but the crisis only intensified. The Malian crisis is above all a story of failure - failure of a state, but also the failure of the international community that supported it. This failure has become the breeding ground for jihadists and has led the military to a dead end. How did it come to this?
It was a crisis that began in the early 2000s, with the arrival in Mali of Algerian jihadists. A presence that did not worry the Malian power of the time, who believed they would be safe if they left the jihadists alone. As the problems grew more apparent, the international community looked away, preferring to see Mali as an example of democracy in Africa. But this democracy was just an illusion. When the jihadists took control of the North and imposed sharia law, the French sent in the army. But without a political solution, the military was blocked. Aid money is embezzled and corruption is institutionalised.
France wants to find a way out and is banking on a European alliance. But the crisis in Mali has crossed borders. Burkina Faso and Niger are suffering from the same problems and now coastal countries are threatened. If Islamist terrorism cannot be eradicated, it must be contained. But at what cost?
Meanwhile, civilians remain the forgotten victims of this crisis. Violence in the Sahel has displaced over two million people. A figure that has quadrupled in less than two years. These refugees are settling wherever they can, as in this no-man’s land forgotten by the world, near Ouagadougou in Burkina Faso. A true struggle for survival…
This documentary was first released in 2022.

You don't understand that it is an enormous continent with different peoples in different countries living thousands of miles apart. Africa is geographically and genetically very diverse. There has been more cultural exchange and DNA exchange between North East Afrika, then between North East and West South Africa. The distance between Ghana and Somalia, for example, is about 8,000 kilometers. West and Central Africa used to be pretty much impervious. It's not only a religion thing, (your tribes like to throw around) its a struggle for power. We have chosen Islam as a lifestyle ( the original Berber and Sahel tribes ), I don't understand why you don't respect it.

if that's supposed to be a jab at over 2 billion people, know that there's a difference between the ones who actually practice it and those who misuse the term Jihad to cause havoc. It's a term that can mean a holy fight against the devil's whispers (fighting your demons, becoming a better person, avoiding bad habits, etc) and it can also mean a literal holy war where it's to defend their nation against outsiders who want to attack their values.
Generalizing a whole group (over 2 billion strong) is a bad idea and likely creating enemies... for what? cause you've been duped into believing what you believe about them? You'll never find the peace you're talking that way. Only attracting the opposite of it, in fact.

Mali is unlike other west african nations in that aspect. Around 5% of the population is north african and a large portion of the nation has north african ancestry. Our demographics are more polarized and influenced by pre colonial trade with arabs, and a relationship with other ex french colony north african states was inevitable. But as you say, it is well past time we stand on our own and decide for ourselves, put in place competent leaders and institutions, organize a more stable economy and soverignty in our own currency, and establish robust anti corruption laws and policies backed by a dependable police and military force.
