  • For almost ten years, the Muslim provinces of southern Thailand have been the stage for a forgotten civil war. The Thai government is trying to impose its authority on a region that has close ties with neighbouring Malaysia. The fighting has left local people trapped between military operations and bomb attacks. But is it about religion or territory? Our reporter travelled deep into the heart of southern Thailand to find out.

The whole area in the South of Thailand all the way to Malaysia used to be a kingdom so called Sri Mahapoh. Bhudhism was prosperous in the area as evidence by the record of a Chinese monk Ijing in B.E. 1214, the time when the kingdom was established. Islam was brought into the area by the merchant from the Middle East later.

All you Muslim want is war all the time when I look at the map the war is mostly always in Muslim Country. Thailand is a Great Country who welcome all religions, my family were fleeting from Burma civil war and Thailand welcome us. And I'm happy to be born in Thailand. Muslim country never wanna have other religions in there country it why there always war in Middle East and in South East Asian. But For a fact Muslim never start in South East Asia it started in Middle East so They spread into these country and claim it's there.

this is British deals with Thai kingdom. The southern part of Thailand is where many Malay lives and in fact they form the majority. We do not want to be in Thailand's rule. just do the referendum and you know that majority of the southerners want independence or unite with Malaysia. They don't teach our mother tongue on school, they suppress Islam. Because of the insurgency now Thai government is paying more attention to the Muslim. We are Muslim, who have our own identity we can live peacefully, if just you give us the right for us to live peacefully, to practice our religion, to speak our language. But the problem with Thailand government is that they just want one thai, they don't recognize us as minority, they want our culture, language and religion to disappear.

You're talking about the Anglo-Siam treaty in 1909 that resulted in this conflict, aren't you?

These people did not have the full understanding of the Thai government policy. All people who were born in Thailand are Thai, but of different ethnicity. For example, we have Thai Malay, Thai Indian, Thai Chinese, etc. The word "thai" means that you are the member of the Thai nationality. But you are encouraged to practice your faith, your cultural practices. However, you are required to study the Thai language for the sake of communication and assimilation. If you cannot speak Thai or understand Thai, you will have a difficult time finding a job in the market. However, the Thai government does not prohibit teaching your dialect, but not in the state school curriculum.

@Zizu Zai It's not the problem of not looking after them well; the Thai state has done well to look after its own people, better than the government of some other countries. The problem is that these people feel alienated, and they refuse to assimilate. They keep to themselves and try to not to live with other people. They refuse to learn the Thai language, refuse to get the education provided by the state, and focuses only on their religious teaching, If they cannot speak the language spoken by the majority of the people, and if they refused to be educated in the area where they have to complete with other people in the job market, how can they survive. Faced with economic hardships, they blame the central government. They need to learn how to co-exist with other people and build a better future together. Instead of using a peaceful mean to solve the problem, they resort to terrorism and killing innocent people. If you were responsible for the security and well-being of the people in your country;, will you allowsuch actions to happen?

you condemn armed uprisings against a foreigner oppressor?
like the oppressors (Thailand&Israel) took the land by flowers and bubbles!
you MUST condemn Thailand&Israel WHO STARTED IT!!!!
and nobody could think that algerians could get their independence by force but they did it despite france being at least 5 TIMES BIGGER in population at that time.
what was conquered by force has to be taken back by it
examples like Sudan giving S.Sud its independence for free are to be welcomed nonetheless.
