I must say I adore this channel. It's not just good or great. It's desperately needed and vital for forwarding the discussion of stand-up as an art form. So often stand-up is denigrated and discussed as being less than art, especially by stand-ups and fans of up stand-up who regularly trundle out the 'it's just a joke, it has no real value or meaning' defence or perpetuate the idea that great stand-ups (especially ones who died young like Bill Hicks) 'weren't really stand-ups' but poets or performance artists or philosophers or whatever rather than just being great examples of what stand-up can do.
Stewart Lee, in particular, has been a revelation in discussing the mechanics of stand-up as art and its connections to literature and theatre, but your channel has taken that idea a step further: not just looking at individual stand-ups as artists or aspects of stand-up as occasionally being artistic, but laying the groundwork for a holistic discussion of stand-up and its various aspects as art. Discussions like this are perhaps going on in certain universities or stand-up circles, but it's this is the first time on CZcams I have seen someone devote their channel to discussing stand-up in this manner and I absolutely love it.
Also I think your editing is great and your music choices are inspired. The presentation of the videos make them feel culturally conscious and deeply engaging. Great work. Keep it up!

Thank you for doing this. I found out about this special from your channel and absolutely loved it. Not every creative risk worked out but it felt like a genuinely groundbreaking take on standup. I was disappointed to find out the majority of people hated it, called it a one-man show, or dismissed it as an attack on the art form in the vein of Nanette. In think it’s one of those pieces of overlooked art that will be thought of years from now as massively influential.

This is a must if you wanna take a deep dive into the world of stand up. This is one of kind channel. I've been looking for something like this and have not been able to find anything close to this. Keep it up
I went and watched it just now and it's actually pretty good.
It's avant garde, and certainly if you haven't developed your appreciation for genre breaking work then this could be a challenge, but the jokes still stand.
It's slow to start. It feels extremely intimate. And the meta-textual joke of it is pretty crafty (the joke being the vulnerability he's not showing).
The spliced bits of his gf make it a lot more cinematic. The sound and light editing accentuate the absurdities of his material.

First off, I love your channel!
Secondly, I'm going to be the brat in the room that doesn't agree that this particular special is stand-up comedy.
The objective for stand-up comedy performances is to entertain & make people laugh.
I look at this kind of performance. . .is just that, performance art! Something that is very unique & immersive experience.
I do think that for a lot of people forget all about Performance Art, what it is.
The objective for performance art is to provoke thought & emotions in an abstract manner.
People rather call themselves stand-up comedians than performance artists, cause one is more popular than the other!

I just finished Bo Burnham's Inside, which is also pushing the hard limits of what a special is.. I think in this case Burnham made one of the best comedy specials ever made, but it's pushing the "standup" part way past the point to be called one (I don't even know if it was even intended to be "standup")

Wow and Inside dropped just a month after this video. What stand-up/comedy can be on streaming platforms is really being pushed right now, I love it!
during that last sequence of him getting verbally attacked by Suki, I felt myself getting angry at her. Like this guy bore his soul and you stand here claiming he is insincere and how dare you de-legitimize what he is feeling with your words. But After a while I realized I was mad because I recognized myself in him all throughout the special. And all the words she said towards him might as well have been towards me, It angered me but it was also a completely fair point. That was my Scoody Doo moment. That being said... He also wrote that part of the show sooooo....
Before Jim Henson, puppets on TV were filmed in little puppet theaters, little booths with curtains to hide the puppeteers, like they would appear in person.
But the television IS the theater. It IS the curtain. It's already hiding the puppeteers off-screen.
When online shopping was first envisioned, the assumption was that you'd have to recreate the in-person experience. But it's different.
Musicians (and comedians) perform live, but when they record a song, it's not just a live performance recorded. It's snippets from several "performances" sliced together.
When The Beatles and The Beach Boys and other musicians started to make music that was more complicated, they let the recording be different from the live show.

It's not really groundbreaking as Harland Williams did it back in 2012 in a desert, albeit a much different style of comedy, and I would put Maria Bamford's standup to her parents in their living room, but the director absolutely killed it. I definitely appreciate the special and doing something different in this day in age other than standing on a huge, two color lit stage with no personality of the comedian but rather the look of an America's Got Talent second round talent contest.
does anybody knows more channels like this? i follow beige frequenly porsalin and comedy without error they are completely different in content but i appreciate perception a lot

That clip of Drew Michael talking about how he wrote this, and I even wrote this part too...I was like hang on...that sounds awfully similar to a Stewart Lee bit. So I rewound to listen again, then saw your subtitle saying "Sound like Stewart Lee anyone?". Definitely does. Good spotting. I'm not sure the "Good writers borrow, great ones steal" maxim stands in this case. Unless of course Stewart Lee did in fact steal that idea and use it in Comedy Vehicle - then yes, it would stand. Actually that would be hilarious if it turned out SL had been stealing all of his ideas from relatively unknown North American comedians and repurposing them for the Hackney liberal intelligentsia.
What he did isn't stand-up because no recording of stand-up is stand-up. It's a _recording_ of the stand-up. Those are different types of artistic objects. Matter of fact, many comedians say that when material is recorded, that material dies - that is why fan recording isn't permitted, and why recording a special is such a big deal; it's a crystallization of a living, artistic matter, towards a treatment for technical reproducibility and commodification.
This is not to say that his work is not good. It's not to say that his work is not _stand-up based_ or _ within a stand-up aesthetic_ - I was left very intrigued and might check up on it, tbh.
However, one cannot call two different types of thing the same thing. Due to COVID, recent years brought about many new, budding forms of spectacle based on recording previous formats to which recording was an after-thought (theatre, music, stand-up apparently...) and some of those forms are different enough from their live-performance roots to warrant a new name to define them. I think this is one of them
I like Drew Michael's comedy but I didn't like this special so thanks for such an insightful video on why that is. Makes me appreciate it so much more.

Because it seems allot of this Chanel is unpacking the questions stand up is asking of itself as an art form that other forms of art first started asking of themselves a couple hundred years ago.

The cutaways to clips from other movies and audio clips really brings the pacing to a crawl. I wish he would just have them play on top of him talking, or if it has audio, just take it out. It feels like he is pointing out something, and then just playing a clip from a movie where they say the same thing. Like the Kung fu panda clip where he says “stuffing our face with cookies” and then po is stuffing his face with cookies. What was the point? It feels like a watch mojo video whenever that happens. The analysis is good, why do you need those clips from movies and tv.
I disagree, it worked for me, but rarity of constructive criticism in YT comments earned a thumbs up from me

can you render in 60fps if youre using mixed framerates, a lot of this is painful to watch, some of it is 10fps :(

I think comedy should provoke laughter, that's the essence. Experimental comedy has change on method, but laughter has to be there... this guy, it just seems like he does spoken poetry and is trying to have someone lauding his genius, which this video gives him.

The minute 'Vulture' and 'Vice' becomes a go to for anything, it's unbearable. Like they don't even get comedy themselves, always riding the moral ground of 'high brows'. I'd rather judge him watching his regular clips of sets in comedy clubs.
