Howdy folks,
To those who have the funny feeling they've seen this all before, you're right haha! This was the first vid I made on the channel and on the re-watch it was making me cringe so hard I nearly blacked out. There were a stack of points I missed so I've added those and also cut out a lot of the pretentious nonsense that I thought made me sound clever the first time around haha. On a side note, there's a stack more content coming so bear with me while I get my s@*t together.
Much love,
Josh
Enjoyed the first one man - love your content. Looking forward to more
Your channel is without a doubt my favourite CZcams channel. Excellently produced and written. But above all it sparks very interesting conversations in the comment section about the nature of stand up comedy.
Thank you! I knew it! I had dejevu watching it
I appreciated the first one and what you were trying to do with it, but I also appreciate this more-accessible/approachable redo.
Well done
Twice
I loved ALL of the first one !! It was my favourite video on CZcams. I shared it many times. Love your work !!
rothaniel (his most recent special) absolute struck me with the cinematography. it felt intimate, sometimes uncomfortably so. i made me feel like I was examining him with undue scrutiny, which given the content of his special was what I imagine he wanted to portray
I was at the taping for this…yes they told us to wear suits…and it was incredible in person, not sure what those reviews were about.
Bo and Jerrod teamed up again for a new special called Rothaniel that premieres this Friday (4/1/22). Excited to see how it compares to the incredible 8!
This is a reupload but I’m happy to watch it again
Same
Wait is this is reup. I thought it was new vid but remember there was video on Carmichaels special
I swear the front half is new previously it was just the end part?
I've been a huge Jerrod Carmichael fan ever since love at the store. You get a sense the the finished product is greater than the sum of the pieces involved. There's a certain texture, a feel to it. They always refer to something as your craft but it feels like he literally is crafting something.
Carmichael special 8 was directed by Bo Burnham. Just watched his special "What." and all I can say is that his alternative style of comedy is just so great. Is it possible to make a video analyzing his comedy and why people like this kind of unorthodox style ?
How Dave Chappelle dodges laser beams is pretty close.... Best explanation I've founs
I swear , anything that bo touches turns to gold
I think it’s important to remember that a lot of comedians don’t have much power over how they’re shot. And then that Prior style suits a lot of the big names because of how big their performances are.
I personally think Dave Chapelle’s recent specials are shot really well
Jerrod Carmichael's 8 was the best! Delivery was insane! I'm not sure if the audience knew what they were witnessing..
Fantastic video essay! It's funny that you highlight Carmichael because his special 8 did strike me as very different when I watched it, but not because of the filming style. To me Carmichael has always come across as extremely shy on stage, his shyness is palpable. It's why I related to him so much and why he inspired me despite me not being impressed by his comedy. I'd drawn by his his stage shyness. But when I shared this with a friend, he told me that Carmichael does not come across as shy to him, so maybe I am just projecting.
Please make a video on Bo Burnham as well
This was the first video of yours that I've ever watched! Glad to see it here and how far you've come. I love this special and all because you encouraged me to watch it. Thanks man!
Hey, this is really well put together and has some great ideas, thanks so much for making it! I love seeing the next generation of comics like Jerrod and Bo start to challenge the outdated restrictions of televised stand-up. I hope to see more specials with this level of care and attention in the future.
this channel is maybe the most criminally underrated on youtube. Honesty man the fact you felt the need to re-upload this proves how seriously you take your craft. Love you work as always. can't wait for the next video and would love to see what you think of absurdist work like Carl-Einar Häckner or vic and bob or even early stuff from Jason Byrne. I know often people see prop comedy as a low form of comedy but it was something Bo Burnham said on the show The Green Room about his favourite comedian was Hans Teeuwe that made me look into more of these people and I can't help myself but find them hilarious and the more you watch the more you can enjoy it.
This video is amazingly done, really hopeful you make a video about Rothaniel as it's the most moved id ever been by a "stand up" special. Keep up the amazing work !
I'm so happy to have found this channel. I just love this sort of analysis.
I've tried having these sorts of discussions before, and so often I'll walk into a response like "Overanalysing comedy destroys the humour" where it's clear that they've either missunderstood what I'm actually trying to say, or that they're resorting to this cliche response as a way to try and trump the topic. It seems like there's a lot of people that just can't engage with the topic.
It's like they see comedy as real life magic, and it just is what it is, so let's not talk about how they perform the magic because that can't be a fruitful or interesting conversation at all. I mean sure, perhaps it is a rather niche interest, but what irks me in-particular is that some people dismiss these topics as if there's just nothing to see here, and that "you're probably just overthinking it."
Anyway, love the content. Keep it up
This reminded me of something I experienced when I was in college. I'm an ecologist and I remember taking my first dendrology class (identification of Trees and woody plants). For awhile, I was very annoyed because I felt like all the extra details I knew were taking away the general appreciation I could get from a hike just appreciating nature. Eventually, you get even deeper engaged and learn more. That is when you realize that your ability to appreciate any one setting (even driving on the highway looking out the window at the crappy weeds), is greatly enhanced by all the effort you have put in to really learning how to SEE. Then you can use what you see to understand what kinds of things are happening in that place, the history of the place, and how it might change over time. Like... the more you see, the more you can look.
I really love these video essays.
I so appreciate your insights into comedy.
Such a great video, subscribed after watching it the first time. Love the channel
I come back here every 2 months and I'm always shocked that the views are so low.
Amazing video and analysis
stewart lee's work is shot so well
Phenomenal video! I've never subscribed after one video, but this is superb! Keep up the great work.
Spot on. I watch this special at least once a year for all the reasons you mention.
This was fantastic on a number of levels. Who ever was behind this... Thank you.
Honestly mate, this channel is wicked
please give us a video about the genius of bo burham
I didnt know all of that, very interesting analysis. Thanks
Love the content man, you have really stepped up your game. Hope someday you get recognized more
Loved this
Firstly, I love this channel. You do really great work, and your videos are a joy to watch. Secondly, I'd be very keen to hear your thoughts on James Acaster's most recent special ("Cold Lasagne, Hate Myself 1999"). Either way, can't wait to see more from you!
really one of my favorite comidians
Good to watch
Background music 🔥 love the video too 🙌
Another Great Video :)
Hey man well done this is a great video
Drew Michael really showed that you can present Stand up comedy is a different way.
Some comedy is meant for the grant sports arena & others hit harder on a intimate scale.
Honestly, other than Jerrod Carmichael, the only two comics who I've seen really experiment with the filmmaking of their comedy specials and makes them undeniably their own, would be No Burnham and Hasan Minhaj. With Bo, the lighting is always manipulated in order to help sell a bid. And with Hasan Minhaj and his Homecoming Special, he did a damn great job with blending humor and real-life drama to the point where you could laugh and cry at the same joke. Even as many other comedy specials just blend together in my memory, I always still distinctly remember Bo Burnham and Hasan Minhaj's comedy specials because of how they were filmed and how you can clearly see that they both gave a fuck and made it their own.
I dont know if you got to catch Stewart Lees show Snowflake/Tornado in 2019. Stew has even said we may never get to see that show in the same way when he can get out there again. But he does something with the opening and picks around the topic of netflixs creative choices
Great and thank you
Showing up here the day after Norm McDonald passed away. RIP to a legend.
Bo Burnham's new special is amazing and unconventional. Exactly what this video is about. Yes, it is indeed possible to film standup another way
James Acaster: Repertoire
The first time I saw this I thought it was pure genius.
Great Essay
I wanted to literally know how to do it but this is good too
I don't mind watching this again
You make the point that “8” ends the same way it began - the conversation feels unending. As you get to that point, we see the number “8” again.. which on its side is “infinity.” I would chalk it up to coincidence, except Jerrod Carmichael is so damn clever that he’s probably well aware.
I'd say you're spot on by saying their venue should match their aesthetic. It's tough to think of other ways to innovate without getting too artsy, though.
I really like your take here, though, I'm gonna have to watch that special
Really liked the video, agreed with the critique on bad filmed specials.
I get the decision to narrow down on one good special, but wouldve loved for you to breakdown more good filmed specials
like chris rock playing in multiple countries, playing into his strength of him repeating his set-up
or Johnny vegas - who wants ice cream, being absolute weirdness like himself
or the impact of Dave Attell letting his audience film half the special in road work
or Zach Galifianakis - live at the Purple Onion, intercutting the special with sketches and skits!
maybe a part 2? haha
This video was a fuckin GREAT watch! Would love to see you revisit the topic especially since Schulz dropped his last 2 specials, Jerrod dropped another, etc!!
You should make a video about Drew Michael’s 2018 special!
The trauma of this background music flashes before me
Personally I'm apathetic towards stand-up presentation and cinematography. I'm here for the jokes.
Kanye instrumentals are phenomenal choices
Nice content. I wonder how you'd cover Rodney Dangerfield, or Don Rickles even 🤔
@Jib can anyone give me the list of all comedians mentioned here?
"lack of awareness", cue d'elia. lol.
how can i be this early lol
this was enlightening
Norm’s Netflix special has the same effect
Lovely
Oh lighten up. The different venues bring out different versions of the artist. For example: Norm M has way more energy in bigger venues thus giving us a different experience. Plus they make them more...entertaining. (IMOpinion)
different doesn't always mean good.
This is America being America innit. Like Blockbuster movies just looking and feeling the same, with a slight theme just bumped on top
The bigger you get the more uniform the look for wider appeal
Anybody here been sleeping on Bo Burnham?
We Have a New King by Chilly Chills is the song. You’re welcome
Didn't you post this like 6 months ago?
I think this video is at its best when it's talking about Carmichael's special, but, with this video being yours, I can't fault the opinion held that other stand up specials are shot cookie cutter. Only that I feel it's trying (too hard) to convince me that they are boring when I'm not a viewer who holds the same view. I think if you're a fan of the comedians being shot or curious the intro bits are of interest. What city they're in, what's on their mind before a show starts, how they conduct themselves, why'd they choose to do the intro they did (ie Jerry Seinfeld in hour to kill being a spy type ). With that said I am totally on board with wanting to see more variety and artistry amongst comics. I don't know too much about specials except that they're largely unprofitable but I wonder what goes on especially for ppl who don't work with tv. Like, what's the formula now? Is it still get put on until you make it to late night and then an hour with either Netflix or hbo? Is there control over how that hour is filmed, where at, and for how many takes? Lots of questions. Love your editing/pacing.
seen this b4
First baby 😀👌🏻
I don’t get this Carmichael business. I really don’t. Michael is a perfectly fine name, why do you need to stick a “car” in front. You don’t see people going around calling themselves Bus-Bill, or Bike-Bob. Just say Michael. It’s fine. It really pisses me off when people do this. It’s like Pritchard. What’s wrong with Richard? Why do you need to stick a P in front? You don’t see guys calling themselves Prupert or Probert. Aaargh, it boils my blood. And don’t get me started on Saladin. WHATS THE POINT?!?! We all know the name Alladin, every kid knows it. It’s a good name, don’t mess with it. Why do you have to go and stick an S in front?! Do you like salads? There are no Salberts or Salexes. Stop messing with names like this.
To me none of that matters. Just is it funny! You need to focus!!
I wanna hear jokes I don't care about camera angles.
Then watch the comedy and not the "how the comedy was filmed" videos. I don't know if you know this but you can stop videos whenever you want.
I just thought it was funny. Not once did I analyze or realize I needed to recognize the cinematography of the whole thing.
Too bad he's not funny.
