This interview resonated with me. How vulnerable and awkward he was in that moment talking about his parents and still being respectful. The way Seth allowed Jerrod to speak and still finding the fine line of humor. Well done!

He seems to be in a very good headspace. A little neurotic but vocal about not being okay over dismissive cues he gets from his fam.
@@Vianeigh863 I don't think neurotic is the right word here, I think anxious is the better term. The reason for his thought processes and behaviour isn't irrational or extreme. As you said, he seems to be in a good headspace. He seems to be working through things, rather than repressing, which is an excellent and healthy response.

He is expressing a level of vulnerability that is extremely rare. He’s lovely, he’s humble, he’s living in the truth of his moment. I love seeing this. I find it so hard to connect with people because seemingly everyone wears a social veneer. He is truly being honest about who he is and it’s beautiful. I wish there were more people like him.
That moment about the "sins"... whew, so much pain there... they all need to heal. I hope the parents educate themselves and move on. He's lovely, smart and funny. I wish him much success and happiness.
It hit similar to a moment in his special where he mentions being loved "despite" being gay. Being loved, but not accepted as a whole. I can relate and have heard similar phrases.
The education required is unfortunately connected to the type of religious practice/structure and understanding the parent is attached to. It's really more about them being willing to look at the church with an analytical and critical eye.

All of my mom instincts told me to hold Jerrod during this interview and I'm glad Seth does hug him at the end. It says a lot about Seth's interview skills that he didn't try to steer him away from the deep and vulnerable content but embraced it and accepted the emotion without judgement.

I think not being like the others, esp as in not as famous, in big films etc, & being a writer backstage & dealing with the probe, he initially want going to be as good taking to them, but he seems so relaxed with them bite, almost as good as Conan, so much better than all 3 James

Yes, this was a brilliant interview. I have a friend who was interviewed on the show. The involvement and intelligence and caring that you see is real.
Too bad, like, the guest like, couldn't like, uhm, like, put a like um, like sentence together without like um, um like saying 'like' every other word and like, speak like, intelligently.
@@Mr21scott you're a d**k. he essentially just came out (again) to a large audience and is dealing with his family's (lack of) acceptance, and he's able to talk through that in the interview and let us all in on this really personal process. It was raw not rehearsed. If you wanted a bit go and watch someone else's stand up special.
I have no idea who he is, or anything about his work, but this is very possibly my favorite interview on LNwSM that I have ever watched. It's just such a rare moment of uncut honestly, and humility, I don't think I have ever felt so much like I was actually present for the conversation. I wish Jerrod all the best in his process of finding a comfortable place in his family life, but also wish I could gently remind him that he will always have a supporting family in the LGBTQIA+ community.
His specials display this exact same vulnerability and introspection and I highly suggest giving them a watch! 8 especially, which was also directed by Bo Burnham. The pair always put out incredible work together.

@@checksanity agreed, Seth and Stephen are the best interviewers because they don’t interject. The Jimmys, Fallon in particular, turn the interview around and make it about themselves. I can’t even watch Fallon interviews, it feels like the guests can’t finish a single story with all his interruptions.

Saaaame. I was saying that when I watched Rothaniel. Jerrod seems like a very genuine person. So likable. I wanna hug him too lol
he needs to talk, to ramble and vent or cry and laugh; it is written all over his face. i hope he has a great support system that will be with him while he processes this. It's a lot to come out; even more so to do it as a black man, especially within our own community. I'm glad Seth seemed to understand that he was dealing with his emotions on the fly and just let him get it out. I wish the actual best for him in finding that inner peace we all need after removing such a huge weight from our souls.

I think Seth has a special space for this inner understanding... He also gave this kind of empathy for John Mulaney... Seth appreciates (the sometimes awkward) good writers.
"It was almost very nice." Just heartbreaking. And amazing that he can bring that to share. This was awkward and painful to watch at times, but so compelling and engaging. It is quite literally what I want from art. It feels real and worthwhile.
What a beautiful conversation I just witnessed. Jerrod opening up about his family was very touching and relatable. I really hope his family realise that he’s still their talented, funny, genuine son and learn to accept all of him like mine eventually did. And kudos to Seth for being so considerate of Jerrod’s feelings, allowing him to speak freely and balancing the comedy & the importance of the conversation masterfully.

Jerrod’s special “Rothaniel” was so well done. While explaining the details of his father’s infidelity and how his environment chose to overlook it, he was highlighting how people are often at peace with their own sins. Yet, when it comes to individuals who come out as gay, people find that to be an unforgivable sin. He says that his mother stated that his sins would tear the family apart. The hypocrisy is wild. Well done, Jerrod.
You don’t know his mom’s “hypocrisies” making assumptions makes you just as bad.

An ex-evangelical I met once explained to me the difference that exists in a lot of peoples' minds in that regard. She said they weigh all sin as equal, but you have to "repent", part of that being trying not to sin again. This presents a problem with being gay, because it's not an action that you choose; it's a natural part of who you are. People with this mindset will forgive someone who has done terrible things as long as they claim to be sorry and to "change", but will condemn members of the LGBT+ community just for being themselves.

Seth handled him so well during this interview, felt like a therapy session. Or a friend venting/sorting out their feelings to another friend. Seth didn't get awkward, AND the audience was on point. Remained quite and showed support when needed.

It's not so much about religion as it is about a deeper understanding of what we as people are conditioned to believe. Why sad when these things are apart of life. There is obviously love there. Gay or on drugs or whatever. The parent child relationship has been and will always be moment to moment, it's like a 50 year racist changing his mindset to accept others outside of his race. It can be done but imagine the effort and time put in. We all should try and remember everyone does not have the same idea about what is considered normal and we cannot force our beliefs on other, rather allow space and love to overcome. My two cents and God bless all of us.. me especially cause Lord knows as well as I do, I fall short everyday

This was an incredibly special few minutes of TV. That was so vulnerable and courageous of Jerrod to open up like that, and it’s the kind of interview that could only happen on Late Night. That Seth and his team have created a show that has room for this kind of conversation is wonderful. I used to be a features reporter and would often have to talk to people about personal, traumatic events, but never while managing a studio audience - how Seth conducted this interview speaks highly of his own character. I watched it as it aired and nearly burst into tears when they desk hugged at the end and Seth wouldn’t let him go. We all need that sometimes. Some of us need it more.
It’s been really scary and exhausting to see the vitriol with which bigots have been going after queer people generally (and trans people earlier) - not to mention that so much of the public seems desensitized to it all. This interview made me feel safe and cozy and like I could breathe more easily for a few minutes. I hope Jerrod finds whatever peace he needs to move forward and that he knows he’ll always have a family in both the LGBTQ+ community and in New Yorkers.
I wasn’t able to watch live thanks for mentioning about the hug. Seth seems like a caring person. He appears down to earth and as someone you could hang with.

Thanks much for reporting on the hug, for those of us that only watch online. And though I'm not among the LGBTQ+ folks, speaking as someone on the autistic spectrum, I can definitely relate to the bigotry stuff you mention, as well as the "parents will blame themselves and never fully accept me as I am" stuff.
I'm so glad he told that story about his parents. It's going to help a lot of people.
I worry about him. He’s a wonderful person inside and out. I really wish that his family can grow to understand and accept him. And eventually apologize for the way they have treated him. He deserves the world. We love you, Jerrod.

I generally hope his family can love and support him the way that he supports to be loved. The irony of all of this is that he's literally taking care of his entire family on his comedy career. “The elephant is the room” hoo boy, does that ever resonate with me. All support in the world to this man. I appreciate someone bringing their heaviness onstage like this because it helps us all to carry our own. It’s so easy to feel alone because nobody talks about the dark things they carry. In reality we are all connected by the pain and the joy that is being human.

I was SO impressed with him when seeing his monologue on SNL and am even more so now. "I am learning how to receive love..." he is really disarming. What a beautiful human being he is...I hope his parents are very proud of him.

Rothaniel was reallly moving. It was like I knew he was going to do it, the moment i saw him hit the stage 🥰. I related to everything he said about family secrets and being aware of them as a child. And it was beautifully shot.
Nice to see such a real, raw interview with such nice guy. It reminds me that we forget sometimes now that being openly gay has become so much more main stream that is still such a struggle for so many who have to deal with acceptance from their family members.
Really appreciate that SM uses youtube to allow time for this real conversation. Carmichael’s openness about his talk with his Mom will help a lot of young people feel seen. He was excellent on SNL and his energy seemed to lift the whole show.

He is visibly uncomfortable, he’s sweating and nervous. I get like that when my anxiety kicks in. He’s joking all around this subject but he is strong for talking through it.
I am sitting in appreciation and awe of the vulnerability. How incredible to have a challenging moment on the phone, and go straight to a live interview. Thank you for bringing awareness that unacceptance of the LGBTQ by family can seem so subtle, and be so harmful.

What a valuable, rare, and touching interaction.This is what you get when you don't have these constant over-rehearsed and canned late-night interviews. Its clear Jerrod is genuinely - and maybe torturously -living out what millions of us have done before and millions of us will do tomorrow and next week. As far as the lbgt+ movement has come - how more normalized and accepted it appears -telling your parents about your sexuality remains a singular experience - difficult beyond any expectations, terrifying, life-changing. Its one of those few moments in life that is truly a right of passage. Its an accomplishment like no other. Congratulations, Jerrod. Hope to bump into you on Grindr some day.

Wow, this was a fantastic interview. Seth is quite adept in conducting and maneuvering with all sensitivity throughout this interview. He created a safe and comfortable environment for Jerrod to open up and share personal and private thoughts. Also props to Seth's audience. They also accepted and responded to the interview in a very mature and respectful manner. Many of the other show's audiences i.e. Bill Maher (the worst audience) Jimmy Fallon, Steven Colbert are just a bunch of wooing and clapping seals. Laughing and woo wooing anything and everything said. Even for the most delicate of subject matters. Seth's show is at a higher level of maturity and intelligence and sensitivity. Other shows would not be able to handle this interview at all. Thank you Seth to raising the bar.

I didn't really know Jerrod Carmichael before this, I've only heard about the special (and I will watch it now!) but this was amazing and I just want to send him all the love in the world. Coming out--especially the doing it over and over and over part, especially to halfway acceptance rather than full support--is so hard, but being like this in the public sphere is nothing short of inspiring. We use that word too much, maybe, but I'm genuinely meaning it right now. You can FEEL this. I hope he realizes how much being real in this way resonates and reverberates out to people who will need it more than he'll know. And I hope it keeps echoing back to him and he gets all the kinds of love and support that he needs. 💜🌈

As a baby boomer, I came out to my folks 50 years ago. While at first they had a tough time handling that reality, they quickly came around. Cultural differences aside, I think it’s a fair assessment, that many parents feel “they did something wrong”. (at least when I came out) Even when my mom, came to accept my being a lesbian, she asked that I not reveal this aspect of my identity to my grand dad (her father). In truth, as much she said, “he wouldn’t understand”, in retrospect, I think she was afraid (whether real or imagined) of how he would judge her, as lacking as a parent. It’s about time, once and for all that any LGBTQ identified person across our planet just be themselves, and it’s a non issue. Bravo to Jerrod for standing up and speaking truthfully in such a public forum. The more visible we are, and are loved and respected, the less the fear mongers can force us back into their closets!

That had to be extra tough 50 years ago. I have an uncle who is gay and waited until his Dad passed away to "officially" come out. I think he was about 60 years old! How ridiculous is THAT?! My Grandpa was a wonderful person and I highly doubt that he would've even been upset, but who knows considering the era and location (small Midwest farming town). That's how they were raised and very few take time for personal growth. I've always felt bad for my uncle having to pretend he was someone he wasn't.
@@nicolepsy So hard to hear that about your Uncle. Though at least he was able to finally live his life as his full self, BRAVO. I have to say, I was blessed to have extraordinary parents, given they were both in the “greatest generation”. I grew up up in an artistic environment, within a liberal cosmopolitan community. Even with their own fears, (mostly for my safety and future) having those “externals” made it much easier. I can’t imagine all the LGBTQ folks living under repressive societies. (wherever they are) to come out there, now, that takes real courage!

That's right
It's true of almost all televised interviews. Celebrities and even politicians will submit a contract of sorts that only certain things will be discussed. Some hosts who don't adhere to such compromises will instead do sketches with their guests (think Colbert).
I confess I hadn't heard of him until he hosted SNL last weekend (in which I thought his monologue was great). And now to see him give such a touching interview here... excuse me while I go watch his special.
I've been a fan of Jerrod for a very long time. I'm so proud of his growth as a human, living in his truth & being vulnerable with all of us. Accepting love is incredibly hard, especially if the ones closest to you aren't pouring into you as much as strangers. Stay true to yourself💚🌈.

I’m in tears. I’m queer and neurodivergent and I didn’t realize how meaningful it would be to see someone represented in the media as a celebrity who doesn’t make eye contact in the “normal” neurotypical way.

This was a really wonderful and moving interview. Seth did a great job asking thoughtful questions and then leaving plenty of space for the responses, and Jerrod gave so much of himself, it almost felt like an unearned gift for me watching. I hope it was a healing moment for him.

I am glad he came out and hope his family stops tripping on it. If they alienate him, just for being true to himself it will be their loss and a needless pain for all.

I love the love in the comments. He should stay in NY and take the love in, no matter how odd it may feel. I have a child who is part of the lgbtqia+ community and he has told me and his younger sister. Not his dad. Not anyone else, even though he is loved immensely by everyone and it would change nothing. He feels some level of concern that it would. I hate that he feels that for something he has no control over. Just ❤️

Hadn't heard of him until SNL, and then I fell in love with him. People are hungry for real connection and emotion.

Jerrod, to me, is one of the most thought-provoking comedians around.
His sitcom offered such nuance and it's a shame we didn't get more of it.
His sense of style is also impeccable I kinda want to see him do a fashion collab with Tyler or something.

I know that the people who do monologs at SNL have his help of writers, but I really loved Jerrord Carmichael's delivery of the monologue last Saturday.
I loved The Carmichael Show, and I love even more that he’s living his life on his terms. I hope his family can get past seeing his sexuality as a “sin” and accept him fully for who he is, because he’s an awesome man and they should be proud to call him theirs.

what a pleasant joy when a late night talk show conversation delves into so much emotional honesty, when both the guest and host are unafraid to dive deep into the vulnerable without overdoing it nor skimming the surface.
Wow! This was so moving and powerful, he was obviously still processing the call...he was so exposed. I'm amazed by the strength it must have taken to not freak out at any point and just say, "it's too much. I need more time, reschedule me"

I really enjoy his humor, was a fan of his sitcom and now I just want to give him a hug and assure him it will be ok
I recently came out as trans to my parents to quite similar reactions. This interview was both painful to relive and comforting to know I'm not alone. The worst reactions come from "picket fence" families that pretend everything is fine, fake a smile and try to avoid the subject.
I’m so sorry. I hope that they’ll come around and also that you have a supportive friend group. Know that there are people who love you and accept you. 💗💙💗💙

I am also trans and unfortunately had a restraining order on my father before he croaked.

I have two trans kids, and people say "Oh, you're such a good mom!" because I love and support them, but that really should be the baseline, not something to congratulate. I wish people could see past their preconceptions and realize that being trans is just another way to human and is as valid and valuable as any other. You deserved so much better from your father. I resonate with this greatly! Jerrod's vulnerability alone is admirable. You can tell that there are still scars and trauma that he is dealing with, but I'm sure it will only get better for him moving forward.

I think he's better off being his own thing and shining that way. He was great on SNL but as a regular cast member, you're kind of just always in the background of a skit unless you become a main player. He already has a special on HBO. I think that makes him kinda too big for SNL. He should come back and host more! 😎
