Something else I love about playing games years after they release is that you get to play them in a vacuum, the hype is gone and you see the game for what it is and not the general landscape at the time.
This one right here. Everyone hated TLOU 2. I bought it on ps5 and it was amazing. I also wasn't attached to joel or elly because I never played part 1 until they released the remake. I also loved ff7 remake and people online would have you think the game was trash.
Imagine buying No Mans Sky, never really hearing too much about it. That game would seem incredible if it's the first time you play it now.
@@XenogearsPS Agreed on the original point but your take on TLOU2 is BECAUSE you never played part 1 first.
@@thatguyshaq7053foreal man its always ppl that never played the first or the games in the franchise to speak...
@@XenogearsPSyour issue is that you never played the first one, so shut up
what if a person dies while waiting
That would be bad RNG for them
That sounds like a personal problem
gg no re

skill issue tbh
if the market sentiment shifts to playing games after a while, companies will be forced to release games fully polished which will be a great thing to happen. these companies have been ignoring what a customer wants and focusing on how to maximise revenue with minimum effort
Sadly most people are still buying on release or preordering...
What you are saying is true, but it will never happen. Alot of gamers are kids or just too immature to do such a thing collectively. Not to mention there is a constant inflow of young gamers that do not understand such market mechanisms.
@@Skumtomten1 sad but true
Aren't it's gonna work the other way around? Like i'm fully convinced that Bethesda now is not even trying to release a full game, being sure that community will fix everything after a year or two. Without the rage from community on CP2077 and No Man Sky releases i'm pretty sure they would just leave it as it is.
At the end of it all, isn't this kind of the point? Maximizing revenue is what is allowing them to survive. As long as people will vehemently defend that you have to buy something to criticize it (while your only method of protest is not buying it), this will continue
I agree with pretty much everything you said, buying games on release or even pre-ordering it most of the time isn't really worth it, and the only advantage of playing a game day 1 is figuring out stuff along everyone else, instead of hoping in an old game where there's already wikis and videos explaining everything you'd want to know
Or spoilers
The other reason to play it on day one is if it's a multiplayer game, many multiplayers will be dead after a year, very few last longer than 3, and the game will rarely be better 5 years from release usually due to low player population levels. Those that do manage to last that long are usually amazing timeless classics, so maybe waiting is just a great way of filtering bad from good?
Elden ring was insane on release even with server issues. Me and my friends racing to complete it. That’s the only acceptable game to buy on release
@@futuzathat's how you know the game is bad and you just saved yourself from wasting money on that multiplayer game.
Just look at some timeless multiplayer games on PC like Left4Dead 2, CS, Dota, TF2, etc...the community never ceased playing these which mean it was a good purchase of a good game.
I dont think ive pre-ordered a game since destiny 2 in 2017.
Red Dead Redemption was recently ported to PS4/5. It came out with only 30fps. I’m waiting a bit to grab it, but already it’s been updated to have 60fps. Folks have already played through it before the patch came out and would have to replay it to experience the 60fps mode.
One of the many reasons I wait. Price go down, features and performance go up.
I platinumed like a week before the 60fps patch. I’m dissapointed in myself lmao
have never played it, will wait until like 5 years from now when all the rest of the best mods are out, then just cherry pick the highest rated and best mods and play it the way it's meant to be played. __b
You can just play it on PS Plus. No need to get the "remaster".
@@astrahcat1212red dead redemption 2 doesn't have a big community of mods like gta
There's a patch for 60 fps?! On the PS5? I been playing this but just exploring. This gonna make it better
I've been buying and playing games years after release since 2017. I got burned really bad with 4 games in a row that year and decided I'll only buy games at 75% off. The only exceptions were FROM software games and this year I also got Lies of P and Baldurs Gate 3. Most games don't deserve a day one purchase. Even with the games I got at full price since 2017 I always bought after they got released intentionally so I don't get the pre-order fomo bonuses.
Playing lies of p rn it's so good! What were the 4 games from 2017?
'FOMO', but in reality what is there to miss out on, I mean games are stocks or something. 🤔🤔
what you miss out on is the community aspect, if you care about that.
for most games that doesn't matter, but for games like Dark Souls, Bloodborne, Elden Ring and so on, where the community collectively tries to piece together lore and story it can take away the magic.
But also, if you care about watching videos about the games you play, then what you will have to content with is often times content that is years old and the majority of the community has moved on. You can't really talk about the game anymore in that sense. @@astrahcat1212

people that pre-order out here single handedly ruining the gaming industry
For real. Game companies know that they can make bank with a few exaggerated promises and a non-gameplay trailer.
Destiny 2 players are actually paying $100 for an expansion they know nothing about just so they can get ONE GUN.
@@althechicken9597that’s just sad.
facts... makes me sad. but many of them are NOT cultured in videogame politics. They dont understand how malicious the industry is, or understand the gaming landscape at all. They see cool shiny new game, and they pre-order. there's no thought beyond that.
Ya but im pretty confident about tekken 8 so i might and maybe ff7 rebirth
I remember I pre-ordered WoW: Battle For Azeroth once, never in my life have I pre-ordered anything after that.
Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice...
I really appreciate you addressing the reasons why people want to play a game at launch. The sense of community playing Elden Ring at launch was incredible. I'm having the same experience now with Baulder's Gate 3. My secret is to wait until reviews too see if it's playable yet before jumping on the bandwagon. Buying later on just makes so much more sense for so many games though. I'm looking forward to finally playing Cyberpunk 2077 now that it's been fixed up.
I think you just missed the sale a couple weeks ago. + they got twitch drops, but it's almost done already.
There's one pretty clear answer for me personally mentioned in the video.
To stay in the loop so to speak.
You can always play old games (unless it's multiplayer of course), but you'll never really get another chance to talk about 95% of them nearly as much as you would when they release.
That being said, there's really no other reason besides being unable to contain your own excitement to play it.
More or less everything in the video is facts. Patches, content updates, Mods, big discounts. All super significant things that generally make it worth the wait.
Yeah the community and seeing everyone else play really pulls you in and makes you want to play as soon as possible.
@@mygameopinionsthe most recent example of a special game and what happens around the release of it is Tears of the Kingdom. If you decided to wait, there’s a lot of big spoilers stuff that you can’t unsee and that community buzz is never as euphoric as when a masterpiece like that launches.
Still against preordering but I do get launch buyers
@@titusgray4598 They really weren't that much totr spoilers
And when it comes to Bethtesda games: They have a fantastic modding community. If you wait a little longer, not only will the community have fixed the bugs Bethtesda didn't bother to fix, but they've probably also modded in so many QOL-aspects, you can't believe the games was playable without...
This is why I'm waiting to play Starfield right here. I don't even think you can find any current Skyrim players that aren't using at least a few (or a few dozen) mods.
Modders are amazing
From thomas to new planet
I bet that is what Bethesda is counting on.
Modders are angels
I tell people I'm waiting to play starfield until the modders make a good game inside it
I do this generally with any kind of media: games, movies, music, etc. Time gives perspective and shows what's really worth investing time in
with movies the theatre experience makes a big difference for me though.
You make me feel okay skipping the PS5 generation, the wait for PC ports will be worth it and currently enjoying the PS4 generation on PC like GTA 5, Master Chief Collection, and Titanfall 2 and so far I'm having an amazing time
I actually skipped the whole PS4 generation and stopped playing video games until the PS5. I think it's amazing how far graphics have come since PS3, but when I watch videos comparing PS4 games to PS5, you barely even notice a difference in graphics yet. I think it's we won't see the true power of PS5 being cranked in games until atleast a year or two from now when they stop making games for both last gen and current. If most major releases are available on PS4 and it still graphically holds up compared to the PS5, there's really no point in fomoing into buying a $500 console
@@fordgtcar110 i think newer generation most stop seeing their power by more than just graphics, like perfomance and complexity. I mean, who cares about graphics now? since the xbox 360 they were already appealing

honestly unless it's a bundle, i don't buy games for over $30 anymore. Similarly, I don't buy games just because they're on sale anymore. If I don't plan to play the game within one or two months of buying it I don't buy it, because chances are, it will be discounted even further soon after that and I'll be angry with myself for paying more for a game that's just sitting around.
I do the same thing. 90% of time I still don't buy them on sale, because I got a big enough backlog & don't want to add more guilt to it.
Your channel is a gem! Amazing Video, I loved Just Cause 2&3 so much I've put endless hours into them

Subbed for this video.
The only reasons i don't wait with buying a game are limited prints of physical games in a series i love and upcoming server shutdowns. Keep up the good work!
Thank you for the support!
Good video. Thanks for playing Feel from Lies of P at the end, it's such a good song.
It's so good 🙏
Well said. I could not have put it better myself. Thank you for sharing.
I don't tend to buy a game until I know I'm going to enjoy it. Also how many hours of play I can get out of it is a big deal, which is why I've replayed some games 5-10 times. I also tend to not pay attention to reviews of games, I usually just look at gameplay footage to see what the game is like. That's partially the reason why most of the games I've played the last five years, didn't actually come out the last five years.
Knowing that Game Studios struggle financially is the reason i actually buy games on release from studios that i like. They give me something that cant be replaced by any other medium and if everyone is just trying to save money on every game, well then at a certain point no one will make quality games anymore. Studios from which i NEVER buy a game on release are (or Publisher) (EA, Ubisoft, MAYBE CD Project after Cyberpunk 2077, Aktivision, Blizzard except for the only MP ones), But Larian, Noughty Dog, Guerilla Games, Crystal Dynamics, Valve, Sony Santa Monica, Respawn Entertainment (Partially), etc... all good. Day 1 Full Price.
Your story sounds kind of like mine haha!
I bought Just Cause 3 on the 24th of December, 2018. The only reason is that GTA 5 was too expensive at the time for me, so I looked for alternatives, and I downloaded this game.
I didn't even get far in single player but just messing around with the stuff given to me in that restricted area was sooo fun to do for hours. Then I downloaded a multiplayer mod for the game (To scratch my GTA Online Itch) and OMG there were a lot of people playing it!!! Most fun time I can remember in 2018. Good Times.
I don't usually play games on release, but the reason is usually because I don't update my hardware so often, I usually keep my setup intact of years before updating and that's also why the latest games don't run as well on my setup. Plus I don't have as much time to play as I used to.
Cyberpunk 2077 is the biggest example of why you shouldn't play modern AAA games at release. I pre-ordered CP2077 on PC and played the game as soon as it released. As we all know, the game was absolutely broken and unfinished at launch. My experience with the game wasn't really that great considering I expected more from the game, but what I got was utter garbage. Now 3 years later, Update 2.0 and Phantom Liberty comes out, and people in 2023 who bought the game for $10-15 would get to experience a better game than I did in 2020, even though I trusted CDPR, pre-ordered and paid more for the game than anyone who bought the game in 2023 did.
This has opened my eyes, and I'm never going to buy video games at launch for the rest of my life. I'd hit the high seas to satisfy my hype and then get the game years later when it's on sale.
I think more people need to stop just jumping on the hype train when games are announced, many recent games were messes at launch and dropped their prices almost instantly.
If you wait a little bit (even 1 year) you can get most of the games for a much cheaper price and you even get a more complete experience due to dlcs, bug fixes or even mods.
For me if I won't play the game right after checkout then I don't need to buy it now and can wait for a better price.
Even multiplayer games are not out of the picture. Battlefield 4, 1 and 5 have decently active communities and you can find these games for dirt cheap online.
They still play bf4 on PC? Thinking Abt picking it up.
@@krischurch3763 Yeah, its not the most active game out here but if you look on steam charts it still has a decent player base
Your channel is gonna blow up for sure

Wow thank you!
I literally have never played a game on release, & i played hundreds of games for 20 years, never got spoiled, never got impatient, never pay attention to reviews & opinions .
Just bought ET for the Atari 2600. Been waiting years to play it. Fingers crossed it lives up to the hype. #thehypeisreal
I really appreciate your thoughts. I was about to pre-order Pandora. But, waiting will be much more rewarding.
Very nice video man very thoughtful
Thank you for the kind words :)
“You don’t want that
You think you do
but you don’t”
People who buy day one are compulsiv customer used to get hyped by marketing, they are not real gamers who look for experience.
They mostly want to stay in the trend in fear to miss something... Years and Years of marketing manipulation created that.
I am one of them , i feel like i always have to keep up in trend , or i just see some gameplay moments in my recommendationn and get excited
WOW! This video made me realize I remember more than just the few measures from the title theme for Starfield.
I have never thought about gaming this way! Thank you.
I usually just wait for games to have all of the dlc so I can save a little bit of money though you do have a point about the game being less buggy
Unfortunately, if most gamers didn't buy games on release, I think it would seriously hurt the industry. Companies would have to run on tighter margins, and that means no risks would be taken, except by indie developers. I want creativity to flourish, so when a game takes a chance, like Lies of P, I got to buy it, even if Lies of P wasn't as good as I hoped (it's an 8 but I thought it would be a 9.5).
yeah this is exactly the reason as to why this approach to buying games wouldn't work if everyone was doing it.
Yes, if you are excited buy it on release.
Boy are you gonna surprised to find out how video games were sold in the before-before times of 2010. I'm not quite certain GTAV, the top-seller of all time, had pre-orders available. If it did they sure weren't a big contributor at least.
@@slyseal2091 It sold 13 million copies on day 1. You can actually pre-order physical stores as well.
@@thelastpersononearth9765 We're talking about 2011(?) here. I'm in germany, so maybe the situation in america had degenerated by then already and you could in fact pre-order, but all I remember is the boxes being on display before release. Day-one sales sure as hell weren't and aren't a measure of pre-order sales.
that lies of P song (at the end) is so fire
This video reminded me of getting dead cells for early access ages ago. Had so much fun learning the game and beating bosses, but then some time after full release they added some dlc that would add extra routes to levels that you couldn’t advance past if you didn’t have the dlc. Due to the game mechanics that reward you being fast and getting through levels as quick as you can, it made the game annoying for me to play as it felt as though to have fun going fast and getting the timed doors at the end of each level I would have to pay to do so. Solid video you bing up some good points
I pre-ordered mk11
First and last time I’ll ever do it
Great video!
Thank you!
Now as for a comment thats more related to the actual topic: I, personally, have reserved myself to only playing my backlog. And its not small.
The only games i will consider buying are (similarly to another commenter,) games that I plan on playing within the next few months or one thats been on my bucket list for many years and finally goes on sale for a great discount. The only exception to this rule is if my friends have a multiplayer game they really would like to play with me, or if i have a new game gifted to me.(and I'm becoming increasingly apprehensive of both, I especially don't like feeling like I'm struggling to appreciating a gift.)
I already have more games than i can seem to decide what to even do with. I tend to stare at them, stun-locked in choice paralysis. I just bloody-well gotta start choosing- lol.
Thanks for your time! Great video!
Thats what I do. I started gaming on Dec 2020. I have a backlog of so many good games. Completed Skyrim for the first time ever just last year. Still haven't played Cyberpunk.
You took the late launch pill. I did the same with Dying Light got the game with the DLC and extras for 5.99 on steam earlier this year
hold on, we cannot just slide past "me and my friends used to hijack planes and crash them into buildings for fun"
🤭🤭🤭
You just sescribed my tought process. I bought a strong gaming laptop a year ago and I'm having a blast playing games that are a few years old and they run so good. I have never bought a game within a year of it's release and behold: I played Cyberpunk on stabile 90fps with ultra settings and rtx on. There are other examples too, but with this DLC stuff being the norm, it is useful to wait for games to have their 'FULL' releases.
With all the stuff I've thrown on my wishlist and backlog over the years something really needs to interest me to be a game I'll pickup at launch. I get maybe two of those in a year if I'm lucky.
I agree with the video but I would say there are definitely some exceptions to this rule : for example Rockstar updating GTA SA and IV to remove some music after copyrights expired, that's making those games worse forever...
Good point, though you can easily mod the music back in on PC and also have access to a slew of other mods.
I wonder why , everything nowadays feels so limited , everyone is sensitive , videogames get cancelled because of some stupid shit , or people overreact on certain things , back in the day game developers didnt care about people might think , but now you got to be very careful for not offending someone ...
@@labelnine Which is exactly why people could do with going "Do the offending things anyway".
If people are coddled and allowed to get away with being oh so easily offended then we all suffer for it. It's living in fear at that point. Better to face it.
When i see a game gets a remake I usually buy the old one out of fear that it will be replaced by slightly better graphics an a 69 dollar tag

While I do agree with your opinion on Starfield and Cyberpunk 2077's release state, let's not forget that the PC port of Elden Ring was also horrible at launch, maybe not as bad as Starfield or Cyberpunk 2077. Still, it was so bad that it had mixed reviews on Steam for the first couple of months and I don't think it should be used as an example for games released in complete state or bug-free state even though the game itself is a banger.
But yeah, I do agree with the overall message of this video. Good job 👍
I think a few points can be said for playing it on release. My big one is community. My friends beat games in a week, even massive games like Elden ring. I take my time and enjoy them over the course of a month or more, but I still like to beat it while it’s mainstream online because I’m social, I like to talk about the game I’m playing. Yes it’s an experience for me but I love chatting about it online or with friends, instead of hearing “oh I beat that game a year ago”. I like seeing memes about it and being present in current discussions, being able to watch streams/videos of it without being spoiled, and sharing my opinion. The second and most obvious thing is that most people just can’t wait, or they’ve been waiting for a game/good game so long that they want to get their hands on it and can excuse some issues even if they’re major. I think the last thing too, even if it means you’re ignorant, CUSTOMERS EXPECT A COMPLETE WORKING GAME WHEN THEY PAY $60+ FOR IT. You may get burned but it’s not your fault, it’s the companies for rushing their game and delivering a lazy product
Lies of p song at the end is a nice touch
The reason people play the game during release is because everyone around them (gaming communities, friends) are playing and talking about that game, these days popularity dies out pretty quickly so people move on to the next game and the cycle continues. Most people also don't complete the game.
To add to this: spoilers. If you spend any amount of time on CZcams or social media during the launch period of a popular game it’s only a matter of time before you see a spoilery thumbnail or post.
@@amysteriousviewer3772 yes
I know this wouldn't fit in your narrative, but another obvious reason would be that we have nothing better to do, so we buy the new popular thing to fill that void.
I've lost complete faith in video games since the direction they're taking them is cinematic and spectable focused, rather than fun, unique, and memorable so I dont get hyped anymore.
(Just as an example I bought Lies of P recently. I wasnt hyped or excited about it. Just interested.
And I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. Its probably my game of year, at least so far.)

Cyberpunk 2077 is the absolute proof that every single gamer should wait at least two years before playing a game. Aside from the MASSIVE amount of fixes and optimization, a recent patch finally addressed the fact that the final boss (Adam Smasher) is no longer a total pushover, a glaring oversight that had been in the game for two full years. They finally gave him powerful weapons and Sandevistan access.
I think it's just that people nowadays are just much more sensitive to bugs and have much higher standerds in general.
Skyrim for example was way way more buggy then Starfield was at launch even after the Legendary edition released. people back then were just happy to enjoy a a good game even if it ran at 30 FPS and 720p.
Sensitive to bugs? It's literally every game though these days. It's why I haven't bought pre-ordered or bought a game on release in over a decade.
Look at this guy 😂
excellent video. this is how ive thought for like 6-7 years now. expensive pc parts and buggy releases, i got sick of it all. now i just prefer to play catch up and just focus on all the games i missed out on from a few years back.

Thank you very much :)
The real problem here is that there are so many stupid people. Cyberbug made 8m sales with that crippled thing. It revealed that people didn't really take their money back and just waited them to fix the game, FOR 3 years. But they could have buy it half the price if they just return it when the game isn't delivered 1/10th of what promised.
The reason I play games at launch is cause I want to avoid spoilers for the story and experience it myself, doubly so when you can do it with everyone on the internet at once. Also it's just fun when you're really excited for a game and get to play it as soon as it's available. I only do this for games I'm hyped for though usually in series I already know and trust. Everything else that I'm slightly curious about, I just wishlist and forget about until there's a sale or price drop.
I just bought Just Cause 3 this week and it's AMAZING. Lol. So much fun in the Sandbox
I got an ever growing list of games to play, most of which are still from like pre-2015. I can afford to wait, and I'm always excited to pick up a game people loved like 4 years ago for $5.
The exceptions (as you mentioned) are multiplayer/live service games. For the reason you mentioned, and also because they often change for the worse (ex: ow1 vs. ow2).
Totally agreed. Even with fantastic games like Baldur's Gate 3, why bother wasting my first experience (the best experience) playing the game in an unfinished state? There's a lot of talk of act 3 being really rough in many areas. There are so many other games to play why not wait until it's fully polished and potentially filled with expansions and DLC? The only downside is some spoiler dodging but I've been doing that for years, I'm an expert at this point.
Yeah I'm really excited to play baldurs gate 3 because I've heard soo many good things. But it's full price and very expensive rn 😅 so I'm gonna wait.
The dev of BG3 usually releases content and balance updates for their games, but that doesn't fix every issue. Divinity OS 2 received plenty of improvement with the definitive edition, but still had some gameplay and story issues.
Btw, while they fix BG3, you can try Divinity OS 2 since that game is an absolute Masterpiece.
Starfield didn't seem boring to me, i was only playing the quests, building ships, and outposts, the exploring for the game is different than previous Bethesda games, since theres planets, i think if they either didn't space the locations out to far or did some vehicles it would be better, and added more structures to the Procedural Generation pool.
It's not boring.. the people that think that are tik tok users with small attention spans.
@@killerb3ar444 I swear, Tik Tok ruined a lot of things, people can't watch or play something over a period of time without some subway surfer gameplay with family guy and satisfying videos to go with it.
oh I found out the game Flower few years ago and it was pretty cool and chill.
While I also think it’s preferable to play a game a year later or so after release, I know damn well I won’t be able to wait a single day to play Silksong when it’s out
I generally agree with you and only play games several years after release, usually waiting at least five. I will say however the two times I actively chose to play games on their release dates were so I could avoid seeing guides or reviews.
me with Alan Wake II
I agree. 👍 Waiting to play games is definitely the right move 👍
I'm 21 and I barely have played games, I love gaming, but my childhood have always been multiplayer call of duty/minecraft alike games (I only had a PS3 and mobile until 2021).
I started playing old single player games last year and it have been the best experience I ever had, and its even better being mature enough to understand the storyline, taking my time, without worrying about looking social media and read 40 spoilers. I have bought game keys online for $10 USD that were $60 at release.
I just finished these new Nordics god of war and I still in shock, didn't imagine that games could be that deep.
Ha that Zelda music. I remember I used to leave the main menu on just to listen to it.
I am a big 'wait for it' person. Having been not destitute, but not having much money. My mom didn't buy me games on release, she bought them on sale. Which sometimes took up to a year. Hated it as a kid, but not knowing the 'release it now, fix it later' era was coming with the digital age it taught me it's better to wait.
I think this includes multiplayer games too. More so in fact. Online aspects on launch tend to be some of the worst experiences: server disconnects, downtime, lack of balance patches and poor match making for example. And waiting a year or two acts as a reliable filter: those games with robust and deep multiplayer that are actually worth investing your time into will still have sizeable community populations for years to come.
I like how you say not to do it but then tell us many examples of how you did exactly play games on release I guess it's a do as I say not as I do kind of thing
I just replayed all of just cause 3 and it's dlc a couple days ago. I've played it many times now, and liberated the whole place loads of times over, all wayyyy after release
Just cause 3 always catches my eye in my steam library. I think I’ll stop sleeping on it.
I wait 1 or 2 years for 90% of games. But if it’s Zelda, Mario, Smash, or anything insomniac makes I’m getting it as soon as possible
Jc3 is a fun game to chill and fly around and blow stuff up 👍
2:02 I literally spat my drink. Just wow!
I haven't played a game on release since 2003. Two years after release you get a full experience for 70% off the original price.
It's probably brought up, but the reason is to take part in the hype and interact with the community.
It might not be for everyone (me included), but I understand why people do it. When I saw Avengers: endgame opening weekend, it was an amazing experience. You no longer have to worry about spoilers. You understand the memes, and you can talk with other people who played/ watched it.
Brother you KNOW. Just got accepted into my dream university on an early acceptance and all my family is proud and life couldnt be better, plus I have A LOT of free time now so Im starting to dig deep into the youtube and watch what people are on to. And you sir, you know what your talking about you got the THING which I really dont know how to explain but you got the thing
Im 4 min in, idk why this a really good essay, not sure why but it just feels really smooth and interesting.
Thank you! I think it's good too im very proud of it. The best video I've made for sure
I bought Far Cry 5 a few weeks ago and sunk over 35 hours into already, but I'm only about half way through the main game.
The game, plus Season Pass (a bunch of skins and extra weapons), plus a few DLC and on top of that Far Cry 3 - another whole game - for only 12 bucks.
When it came out my computer couldn't run or if at all then with everything turned down.
I want you to know that I absolutely relate about the plane thing at the beginning. For the past couple years I have been using GTA online exclusively as a flight simulator. I just log on, steal a plane, fly around for like an hour, then crash into a building, then I do the same thing a week later.
Just bought Just Cause 4 Reloaded for 5.45$ on steam just because of your video ! :D
One of the reasons why I like playing older games is because, it kind of gives me an idea what playing the game when it came out was like, specifically for games that are really old. Like Mgs 2, ace combat 0, super Mario sunshine, and killer 7. Like a blast from the past I guess, some of those games are older than me and are very polished as I don't think they could release patches later. I feel like these older games had a lot more, soul? Put in them?
TLDR: Anemoia
I never though I meet someone who also has that mindset. It is interesting to see how good or bad things where back in the day. I am playing Oblivion without mods right now and I am also gonna play Skyrim withut any graphic mods.
2 games that really blew me away was Far Cry 1 and Half-Life 2 both from 2004. People laugh at me when i say those to games has really good graphics but I guess what I mean is that it was impressive graphics for the time. I think in the 2000s devs really pushed themselves to make good and impressive games. But after 2010 the progress slowed down. Games from 2010 could look almost as good as one from 2020. At least its not worth spending 10x more for just a little better graphics.
quick heads up: just cause 3 is on sale on steam for just 3 bucks (or 7 bucks for the xxl edition)
Good vid, mate! I honestly wish this topic was discussed more. the only thing I'd disagree with you on is I think FOMO is actually the number 1 reason why people buy games on release, though I guess the more hyped a game is prior to release the greater the FOMO people will feel about not buying it.
My personal experience is that I wasn't allowed to play video games growing up (I have very wonderful, but at the time very strict parents) which obviously I hated at the time, but I finally got around to entering the world of video games a few years ago (I'm in my mid 20s now) and because I didn't get to play any games growing up I'm in this position where the current state of the industry doesn't really affect me because I have this decades-long backlog of the greatest games ever made, none of which I've played before and all of which can picked up for literal pennies!
The first game I bought was The Last of Us, a game I had been hyped for since it released 7 years prior and a game I maintain is one the greatest ever made, and I bought the Remastered PS4 edition for a grand total of £3.90! I bought TLOU 2, one of the most hyped games of all time, for £16 only a year after it released (it hugely disappointed me, mind you, but that's beside the point). I have also played all 4 Uncharted games, the 4th of which came free with my 2nd hand PS4 Pro, and the other 3 were purchasable in the remastered collection for about £7 total.
In Steam's autumn sale last month I purchased the first two Metro games by 4A Games in their remastered raytraced editions for £1.55 each! Or if sidescroller puzzle platformers are more your thing the double pack of Playdead's Limbo and Inside (both of which I've played and and honestly cannot recommend enough) was available for £2 in the same autumn sale. The list goes on...
There's a good number of iconic and massive games that I've played now and probably all for a combined total of less than the asking price of one current AAA game, and my enjoyment of them has not been remotely lessened by not playing them when they were super hype and the latest greatest thing.
In conclusion, I remember seeing another vid on CZcams where the guy basically said "Why are you all paying full price for the latest bug-infested and bland AAA releases when there are so many truly great games from previous years that you haven't even played yet?" and I'd like to echo that statement; don't let your need to be included in the latest trend make you miss out on some truly amazing gaming experiences that you can pick up for some truly amazing prices.
another point is that new games are often over 100gb in size, and those on a budget cant afford a bigger drive to fit like, 5 more games
Great piece and well put together, well done.
I agree 1000% there is very little incentive for people to buy on release/early these days; with these companies and publishers lack of pride and quality in their products and releasing them unfinished and broken, and their 'release now/fix/complete later' mentality. The thing is, like you say, there is practicalyly very little in the way of incentives anymore in buying a game on release to pay more for a broken experience. when you can buy it later on and have a polished and better experience for a much cheaper price; and early adopters are are effectively being punished for buying early, buy having a bad experience with their games; the industry is effectively hurting itself, it's reputation, it's products, and ultimately it's customers.
You pretty much covered all the reason to play a game on release and also to wait to play later. So everyone can make their choice.
One thing extra though, I once played this game during its beta period, they call it early access now. It was a game called King Arthur's Gold. That game was so much fun before release. It had a lot of long standing bugs that basically functioned like advanced gameplay mechanics. You could set up traps or build structures taking advantage of some of the bugs which required deep knowledge of the bugs to pull off effectively. After the full game came out all the bugs were patched out. I missed that game's early days.
I played FF7 for the first time in 2024, instead of on release in 1997 when I woulda been -5 years old. Definitely a better experience waiting a while.
These are very good points. Only with the games I play - Pokémon - they often give those nifty early buy once in a lifetime special Pokémon that the collector in me can't live without. Those games I preorder when I can.
i have no desire to play most new releases. i pick up games i want to play years after release on steam sales for a deep discount. feels good man
With the recent game releases except elden ring , starting from 2021,I usually wait until months before purchase
i doubt youll read this comment, but i really wanted to say that this video really struck a chord with me. from the choice of games, music, the anime in your profile pic, and really agreeable and forward opinions, i feel like i would have made this video myself if that was my thing. thank you for making this. i really appreciate your effort and hope you continue to make cool stuff in the future.
I’m still waiting to play Minecraft! Super hyped, might get it in the next five years
