@@Apate- This shit hits fuckin home, when I was younger I'd only be able to get games once in a blue moon and only things under like $10-15 and I'd play them for hours upon hours. I got the Witcher 3 for $13 as a kid and out in upwards of 800 hours into it. Then when I started making money I just bought whatever games I wanted and eventually filled my backlog across PC and PS, now I have around 200 games in my backlog, 30% of which I've put enough time into where I feel like I didn't waste money, 50% of which I have less than 20 hours in and may never finish them, and 20% of which I've never even opened.

However it's not to say not having such passions is bad, it's fine to be a fleeting person who doesn't stick to one thing or place for long and will in fact give u lots of unique and awesome experiences that not everyone who is so committed will get to experience.

Quality over quantity is what I'd say; Sometimes there's games where people are just idling on just hanging out with other people for a good chunk of their playtime (like MMORPGs or VRChat), and others are the kinds of games that take a very long time to master (Dwarf Fortress, for example). Finally highly moddable games can keep a game fresh indefinitely, especially if it's a sandbox game.
In the end what you find fun is what's most important!

A big part for me in being able to play a game for hundreds (or even thousands) of hours is wanting to get better at the game. When the goal in playing the game is not to experience the game once and finish it, but instead improve at it, playing it for a long time becomes much easier. You can find unlimited replay value in just trying to get better at a game.

I'm easily person A. I definitely have thousands of hours in Minecraft, a few thousand in geometry dash, about 700 in terraria, etc. I think personally I really like mastery. I don't get excited about the early game of Minecraft, I get excited at the thought of not only building an automated farm for just about everything I can, but having enough of an understanding about the mechanics of the game to design them myself. Games for me are very rarely about short term reward I feel like, but more for slowly working towards a goal and feeling good after achieving it, which is probably why I enjoy geometry dash so much. Idk, I don't feel like I'm in the majority with this way of enjoying games, but that's my perspective on it all

I think from my perspective, I have a wide range of interests in video games, a variety of hobbies, as well as my work, so once I feel like I've seen what a game has to offer and got what I feel like all I could get out of it, it's time to move on. This is also the reason why I can't really get into pvp competitive games, they require a lot of time investment even though you're stuck in the same repetitive game loop.

Fantastic video, I'll be here before you hit 100K. I can say for FPS games like Counter Strike / Valorant / Apex Legends that as you said in the video, a lot of people play for thousands of hours because they want to improve, and because, unlike single player games, the way to "beat" the game isn't clear, so naturally getting the highest rank seems to be the goal, which will take for most people hundreds if not thousands of hours (if ever) to get. The reason it tends not to feel like a waste of time for some people is because at least in the FPS realm, getting better will often carry over to other FPS games, and since the genre is so established in the industry, you know that if you get good at something like CS, you'll be at least above average at pretty much any other FPS you pick up, so playing your usual FPS is like practicing for the entire genre as a whole. Think of it as a blessing that you have the ability to spread your focus on so many different games, because unlike some of my friends, ALSO appreciating shorter and more unique experiences in single player games gives you a kind of enjoyment impossible to find in the ups and downs in multiplayer games.
Also, when asking my friends to try out certain unique games, even if the games are critically acclaimed, it seems an easier choice to go for the comfort option of playing a game they're used to (even if they sometimes seem to hate it) instead of investing hours into something they have no idea whether they'll enjoy or not.

There is something very significant and special in growing your aiming skills with a set team or friends over a long period of time, the grind is unforgettable.

Your video really made me think. In my teens, gaming was mostly a social thing - I used to trade Pokémons in the playground, play CoD with friends from school, hang around in Minecraft worlds. Most people naturally "grow away" from that, due to friend groups dissolving and people forming different interests, but that hasn't really happened to me - there was always some friend looking for a game of League, or a map of Civ, or looking for a buddy to try out a new MMORPG with. I definitely appreciate that and it's a lot of fun, but it can be hard to find some time for myself.
Only in the past few years have I started to make a conscious effort to dedicate some more time to single player games, since those usually end up being my favorites and the ones that leave a lasting impression on me. It's not easy - a lot of great roguelikes have been made in the past few years that just beg you to drop 100 hours into them, and replaying old favorites is always enticing. But you did a great job at selling how much fun it can be to play a wide variety of games - that's the kind of person I want to become, and seems like the best way to engage with the medium of videogames as a whole, and take from it as much as it can offer.

Loved that you slipped in an RPG Maker game (Hello Charlotte) at 6:32. I think my biggest issue with playing many games (especially modern) is that controls and format can be so vastly different it's an effort just getting into one. Being someone who plays mainly for story, it's problematic when it feels like the tutorial streches out till mid-game. This is why I tend to prefer things like japanese titles where gameplay innovation like this is less frequent. As for playing non-sandbox games for many hours, I guess some are just so jam-packed with artistic creations it's hard to let go off before grasping every bit, which is mainly due to all games being built with the free exploration aspect in mind.

Great explanation! I've only had 3 games that I could come back to every single day, enjoy, and spill thousands of hours into. The main one is Geometry Dash, which I have about 10,000 hours on. The other 2 are Minecraft and Skate 3, which I have a few thousand in each of those. I think the main thing that keeps me coming back every single time is the unlimited amount of content you can have, and being able to do whatever you want in the game. I've enjoyed playing games that aren't like that in the past, such as games where you follow a campaign, or storyline, but I never see myself always wanting to come back to it, even if I haven't finished the game. Well made video, definitely helps me better understand the other side!

Part of it is just how long a game has been out. I had seen a let's play of Terraria before it came out (I think the channel name was PaperBatVG?). Then I found a leaked alpha version and played that. Then I bought the game within 30 seconds of it releasing on steam. I still remember being in Grade 9 where I brought a laptop to school just so I could be one of the first people to play Terraria when it came out. I played maybe like 20-30 hours in the first month of it coming out. That was 12 years ago, and I've done about 1-3 playthroughs per year. A very reasonable amount for a game I really enjoy. Some was vanilla, some modded. After this long it only makes sense that I'd have 1000+ hours in it. Yeah, I don't have 5000+ like some people. But I played the game a fair amount over the last 12 years, so it only makes sense the play time would accumulate. I imagine the people with 5000+ hours are people who probably played it more often than me, but over a long period of time. For example, one of my friends made mods for the game, so he had way more hours just do to testing his mods in the game. Another thing with games like Terraria is that you can make afk farms. So you just leave the game running when doing other things, another one of my friends has 4000 hours just because of that.

But I eventually got it on the Vita and my friend was basically my guide for the game, telling me what I need to be looking for, what I should do next. Eventually I beat the Wall of Flesh, and did it all again on a second world. It was definitely fun, but I couldn't spend a thousand hours in that game.

To me, a game with a really good modding community becomes several games in one.

I feel like the video game experience is more meaningful when I complete more high quality games that don't take a lifetime to complete. Video games become a chore when you don't feel excited, motivated, or surprised anymore when you play it - that's when you gotta listen to yourself and find something new or take a break. In the past, I was person A for minecraft and other games which I don't regret, but I much prefer that feeling of accomplishment when you complete a game that never got stale and found a healthy conclusion. For me, I'm the exact opposite, I really struggle to find games that I don't pour hundreds and hundreds of hours into. I think a big part of it is that I play a lot of 4X games, particularly by Paradox, and you only really even figure out how to play it properly after like, 200 hours at minimum. I'm sitting on 2000 hours in EU4 and I still learn new things every single time I play through it. The flavour of all the different regions in all paradox's games makes them endlessly replayable to me, and despite its technical problems the multiplayer is some of the best out there. I also have like 3000 on Terraria, I could play that until I died. I've not touched them for years but I used to feel that way about the binding of isaac and geometry dash, I'm at about 1000 in each of them. I think the core of it is that no 2 runs through of any of these games are ever the same, and in fact they can vary very wildly. It's enough to feel like a brand new game to me every time

  • @Phirestar
    @Phirestar Před rokem +4

I am a strong “Person A” type of guy.
Thinking back on it now, I always had one of those “endless” or highly-replayable experiences at any stage of my life. When I was very little, back in elementary school, my old best friend and I would spend a ton of time playing Sonic Adventure 2 Battle on my GameCube, where the thing that we did most of the time was collecting items & animals in stages to take into the Chao Garden and raise Chao. (He went for all the Hero Garden Chao, while I did the Dark Garden. I even still have the memory card with that data from all those years ago, though unfortunately that memory became corrupted at some point and is now no longer useable.)
Then when I got to middle school, I discovered RuneScape, and that game _took over_ my life. It was essentially a game with infinite content, as far as I was concerned, because there was no way that I could’ve ever accomplished everything that game has to offer. In over 4,000 hours of playtime on my original account, I managed to get one, single skill to max level, out of the 20+ skills that were available in the game. Even today, that remains the only time that I have ever reached level 99 in a skill.
In high school, I got to be there to witness the birth of Minecraft back when it was in Beta and only available on PC. That game, along with Skyrim in my senior year, introduced me to the world of modding, which basically made games endlessly fun to play.
After high school, I got deep into competitive multiplayer for the next several years, which turned out to be the most addictive type of experience for me. I started with Chivalry: Medieval Warfare in 2013-2014, then got into Team Fortress 2 for close to two years before the release of Overwatch in 2016, which was the last game I played before I finally burned out on multiplayer. Between those three games, within the span of less than 5 years, I played a combined 3,600 hours. (And when I said they were addicting, I meant it. There were times when my hour counts in TF2 were hitting 50 hours _a week._ Quitting was probably more beneficial for my health than anything.)
And since then, I’ve dug around and found a bunch more to fill that niche. I have started shifting a little more toward variety and enjoying multiple types of experiences rather than dumping _everything_ into just one game, but I’ve still managed to get significant hour counts in a lot of the stuff that I’ve played. If you’re interested, allow me to “flex my playtimes” on you, so to speak: steamcommunity.com/id/Phirestar/games/?tab=all
So yeah, I really love investing a lot of time into a game. As much as other people may think it doesn’t mean anything, or even consider it to be “sad” that I’ve put so many hours into games, I am more than happy with it and consider it time well spent. I like being able to put a lot of hour into a game; I feel that it shows just how great games can be, that they’re able to hold your attention for such an insane length of time. It’s something that’s specifically unique t video games over other mediums. Even the greatest movie you’ve watched or book you’ve seen, you could experience ten times over and still not even come close to matching the amount of enjoyment that people have gotten from something like Minecraft or RuneScape. And I don’t mean that in a way to suggest that shorter, less “repeatable” experiences are bad. A 2-hour movie or an 8-hour game absolutely has its own merits and would not necessarily be better if it did last for longer than that. I just think that it’s an amazing feeling when something _can_ last for hundreds or even thousands of hours.
What I will say, however, is that I won’t downplay the other side of the discussion. You may feel envious of people being able to get a lot of playtime out of games, and I’m here to say that the grass can always be greener on both sides of the fence. Lately I’ve found myself growing envious of people that are able to play a game through once, set it down, and move onto the next one. Sometimes it can feel very cumbersome to want to experience everything a game has to offer when that content stretches for months or even years’ worth of time. I think it’s especially true now that I own so many more games that I love, and I’m no longer looking at just one or two games to invest all my time into. When you have a desire for long-term investment into games like this, you end up with the issue of never getting a proper sense of closure with games. You never really “finish” a roguelite like Dead Cells, or a game with a big modding scene like Stardew Valley. Yeah, maybe you can complete all of the content like unlocking all items or getting 100%, but they’re designed to be endless replayable. You don’t really stop playing when the game is over, you just stop once you’re bored of playing and want to move onto something else.
This is why I’ve grown a deeper appreciation for shorter, less replayable games in recent times - the “one-and-done” sort of experiences that I didn’t care as much about years ago. I replayed Spyro again in 2021, with the Reignited Trilogy, and I loved the fact that they were pretty short games (individually) that I could just beat to 100% and then be done, with noting to draw me back into it again. It meant that it was a game that I could check off my list and not have to think about later, like I do with a lot of other stuff. I wish that I could play more games that are like that; I wish I found more games in the vein appealing, instead of always being drawn into all of the ones that seem to go on forever. I’ve got so many games on my wishlist that are like 50-100+ hours for just a single playthrough, with most featuring a lot of replay ability in the form of different builds, mods, etc.
In the end, both types of games are great, and I think a good mixture of both is the best way to go.

Dude this comment is nearly as long as the script for this video was! And I saw some of your steam reviews are really long and in depth too. You should consider making some CZcams videos you clearly have a lot to say about games and the medium👍
Yeah I can see how the grass always seems greener on the other side. I wish I was playing during peak Runescape or WoW, I think it must've been so cool back then. And yep I actually just stopped playing my Stardew Valley save because I ended up getting bored. When there's technically no end it's really hard to choose a stopping point. I just love the sense of closure of finishing something and being completely done with it (unless I decide to replay later). Sounds like most of the games on your wishlist are RPGs? I could recommend some really great shorter games if you're looking.

      @Phirestar Před rokem +2

Heh, funny you mention that. I’ve always wanted to start a CZcams channel, ever since about... 2011-2012 or so. The theme has always been focused around games, but the idea has changed over time. It used to be wanting to do Let’s Plays, back when that was the “trendy” type of content on CZcams. After a while I started thinking about reviewing games, when I began watching more analytical type of content. Now it has shifted to this idea that I’ve come up with myself, which is a kind of hybrid style of video that combines game critique and storytelling. It might be difficult to convey it through words, but essentially it comes down to this “narrator” of sorts who talks about his experiences playing games in a dramatic, camp-fire story-esque manner. Basically I don’t want it to be just a standard type of “review” channel; instead I want to play it up and create this immersive type of experience between the creator (me) and the viewer. The image I had in my mind was that of two people sitting in a table in a cozy tavern, and the “narrator” is recounting his experience of playing games as though they were actual, real events that happened to him, rather than a character. (If it’s not obvious by now, I am a huge fantasy genre fan.)
Yeah, I keep a lookout for potential games to fill that “short and sweet” niche. I find that platformers tend to be a good pick for that kind of thing, since they don’t usually last super long. That’s where some of the stuff on my wishlist like Freedom Planet 2 and Cuphead come into play. There were several others that I had considered also like Sonic Mania and the Super Monkey Ball remakes. I watch a lot of upcoming game compilation type videos, so I find what’s out there.
And oh god, 100%-ing Celeste. God, what a pain it was to go to the extent for that final achievement by obtaining the Moonberry. That added 500 more deaths onto the 5K+ I already had in Chapter 9. When I finally finished that game and closed it, the first words out of my mouth were literally, “That was a fun game. I never want to play it again.”

@@Phirestar Holy crap that is such a good idea genuinely. You've managed to come up with a unique idea that's really cool. You should absolutely start making videos please and let me know when you do.That sounds like such a cool concept playing a character of sorts and then describing your experiences with a game through that lens. It'll have a specific vibe and charm to your channel that'll keep people coming back for your personality instead of coming for a review.
Because you're right, lets plays have been oversaturated for the better part of a decade now. And it can be hard for people to come watch a review from a "nobody" instead of their favourite youtubers who they trust. Everybody has their sources that they go to for reviews already so you need to make some other reason for them to watch. I wish I came up with your idea bro! Also you clearly have good writing skills and the ability to talk about games in-depth easily. So yeah don't let this idea of yours go to waste, make it happen!!!
Sonic Mania is insanely good one of the best sonic games ever. And after grinding Celeste and loving it I had the same thought lol. I never really want to go play it again, but that first playthrough was magical. I played before Farewell was released so I never did end up playing that...

I'm somewhere inbetween, I have a few "main" games with several hundred hours that I always come back to and I switch up from time to time which one I play most. Then I always have a few "side games" so to speak that I'll play for a while depending on how much I like them. Some of them have actually advanced to be a main game but that's pretty rare.
Then there's the type of game that I get obsessed with once every few years and won't play anything else for weeks but then get burned out of it. Typical examples are Minecraft, Crusader Kings and other Paradox titles.

Nowadays though I end up spending a lot of hours in games like Risk of Rain 2, House Flipper, Minecraft, Satisfactory while catching up on youtube videos and podcasts, it's nice to be able to play something mindlessly while watching.

'Dark Souls 3' is that game for me, well, the Souls series as a whole, but DS3 connected the most. No other game has been able to scratch the itch quite like that one. With a collective 2000~ hours across a couple accounts, it captured exactly what I love in video games to the point where all others started to pale in comparison. I would say that half of it went to the PvP and the other went to NG+ on top of NG+ - characters upon characters.
No other game has gotten that level of investment though. Minecraft or WoW come close, but those are ever-updating and have multiple kinds of servers; they're a bit different. Hell, the difference between my #1 and #2 is 1,500~ hours. But that's not to say either way is better or worse. I would say I play the all more than the one, DS3 is just my favourite outlier. Variety is great, but when that one gem shines out of the rough, I can't help but drag my magnefying glass across every corner.
The only other non-online games that fall into a similar pocket but with much elss invesment would be 'Rain World' and 'Risk of Rain 2' (excluding the other Soulsborne games).

    • @illusion8457

I know fromsoftware games are kind of meant to be replayed, but I don't think I've ever finished an NG+ cycle in any of the games (other than ds1 but that was for the 100%). I just don't feel like going through it again after finishing. They're the types of games I finish once and then put down because I know I can't recapture the magic that the NG run had. I completely agree that they spoiled me though, I've never looked at video games the same way after playing souls. It's like someone compiled together my favourite aspects of games into one package specifically for me. I just have to be in a very specific mindset to thoroughly enjoy playing them and that's why I don't have more than 350 hours on any of the games.

I’m actually both 😅 single player wise now a days, I just can’t get the hours into things like other people have - Animal Crossing New Horizons during lockdown aside and even that I was playing it along side friends if not actually together. I find I’m much more into variety with single player, I get to a stopping point and I really struggle to continue past that or do multiple playthroughs and stuff and would rather move to another experience in my backlog.
But multiplayer wise, usually with friends but also on my own in some games, I will rack up so many hours if it grabs my attention with multiple very high hour games including Halo series (3-Reach), Call of Duty MW2, FIFA (12-14), Overwatch, Minecraft, Rocket League etc. - I just find every game plays out so differently and it really hits my strive to improve nature 😝

I'd say it's a different story for each of the 3 games that I have 1000+ hours in.
    Minecraft (1000+?)
    - Exactly what you said
    Teamfortress 2 (2200)
-One of the few multiplayer games where I can confidently say that I'm good at playing it. And it's as much of a platform as it is a game. It's a game with many games in it.
    CS:GO (2300+)
    - A competitive outlet where I can sink my teeth in it peacefully, because I don't have to worry about insane changes. Stood the test of time like a champ.
I too move on quickly, In recent years, death stranding is the only single player game that I've actually replayed. I usually move on to the next single player game and never go back.

I really don't think its that simple as there being two camps, i like playing longer and shorter experiences. For me atleast, the reason i keep playing some games over and over again is that they provide a unique type of experience that nobody else can replicate.
The problem is also lack of knowledge, i know my games which i replay are great but with new games its a gamble. And if its a complex game i'd have to go through the tedious process of learning its mechanics.
I love EU4, Factorio, Minecraft, ONI, Terraria but learning the recipes and mechanics wasn't really my favorite part about them. And for lesser games that could have been where i stopped playing them. It isn't the games fault but learning stuff is annoying, knowledge is fun.
Well that isn't entirely true, im learning myself electricity and just found out how electricity gets turned into kinetic energy through electromagnetism and finding all these things out were really cool but the process to get there was kinda annoying. Its a lot of asking questions, not getting it, asking differently, getting it and then realizing you still don't get it. Then finally truly understanding it. Its an emotional rollercoaster. Learning games isnt as frustating as learning irl concepts but still.

    • @mygameopinions
      @mygameopinions  Před rokem

Yep the two camps are definitely not like exact limitations. You can play both types of games. I play some longer games too and I play multiplayer games, but mainly shorter experiences are what I rock with.

Amazing video bro! As someone from the other side, a person who mainly enjoys one game for thousands of hours, in my case CS:GO; I can honestly say I can't see myself playing another game this much. The game has so much to learn and enjoy for me. Skills, friendships, every game is different, and I love seeing myself improve. I guess being good at games is what I enjoy, more than the actual story of a game itself. Although I've played a few other games and enjoyed them, usually I can never complete them because I get bored and go back to CS:GO. Saying all that, I can still fully understand why some of us enjoy a variety of games, and others just one or two main games!

I feel what you mean. I had a game, Dirty Bomb. 2k hours. When it died, nothing could replace it. I have one at 700h, 3 at 250h, and 2 more at 150h. But all of these have been a spread, over the four years since dirty bomb died. Dirty bomb was my only game for 2016-2019, and nothing will replace it in my heart. If it was still around, id be at 4500 without a SHADOW of a doubt.
Something about the game speaks to me on such a primal, lizard brain level that makes it just so good. I could try and list what made Dirty Bomb my game, but it sounds ridiculous. I liked the mapflow? The sounds of headshots? The diverse yet standardised characters? Everything about the game simple worked for me in its entirety. Not a single criticism i could muster could ever stop be from playing the game. I love the games i play now, i enjoy being able to just get that urge, hop in for 2 weeks, rack up another 20 hours, and then move on to something else. But going from a type A guy to a type B guy is rough. Im still a type 1 guy at heart, i wish my game was still alive. I can always play on the few remaining dirty bomb community servers, but without the steam friend list full of active DB players and the promise of future updates feels like im playing a corpse, with the soul removed.
One may hope to find your game, but it is better to hope you never lose it

I think MMOs in general may be a point that should have been brought up due to the sheer bredth of content they provide. If you're not worried about being competitive and just do the bits you enjoy, you can often avoid that feeling that you've hit a natural stopping point.
