  • DEAD MALL: Chapel Hill Mall - Akron, OH. This mall is one that is struggling to survive. Now in foreclosure proceedings, this place has struggled to pay bills yet the owner had money to buy another mall. Will the Chapel Hill Mall survive the pandemic once things reopen? Or will this place become the new Rolling Acres Mall?

The music reminds me of the 80's so much. I miss the 80's. I grew up going to Rolling Acres and Chapel Hill mall in the early to mid 90's. I remember the big snowman that Chapel Hill Mall had during the christmas season. I also remember the arcade located upstairs by the food court in Rolling Acres. I also remember a Burger King in Summit Mall located in the front of the mall near Ruby Tuesday(now PF Changs). I think Firestone is one of the few stores still in Summit Mall that has stayed since I was a kid in the early 90's

I know I haven’t watched the whole video but I worked at Chapel Hill mall twice. Once at Steve and Barry’s then at Old Navy. Had some good times too. The night before my wedding our friends took us here with Bride and Groom sashes and took pictures of us. What destroyed this mall was banning teenagers on weekends after 5pm. Then the big department stores started closing. We did have a huge glut of malls. I mostly went to rolling acres until it got too dangerous. I don’t know if they ever stopped bus service to the mall because that was a big deal. The carousel and the fountain were awesome too. Been gone from Akron 10 years now. Hard to see it deteriorate like this.

    • @WallieB26
      @WallieB26  Před 4 lety +3

Wow! Thank you for sharing your story. I had no idea there was a Steve and Barry's here. I know their run was short though. And while I can understand banning teenagers without an adult, it seems a bit ridiculous at ban them at 5. The Monroeville Mall has a similar ban that goes into effect at 7PM if they dont have an adult accompanying them. Reason is because of the repeated history of violence here in recent years being similar in style and usually near the end of the day.
Bus service still active here at Chapel Hill. Right by the entrance I went in, there were several buses idling there with another dropping people off. Never did I feel threatened or in fear of my safety. Actually felt quite well here. At Rolling Acres, I can see why no one would feel safe there when it was going downhill. I visited the ruins after it was mostly demolished and it seemed very very sketchy. Other than that area, the rest of Akron has always seemed relatively nice. I generally like the Akron and Canton area to begin with.

I was trying to get out there for a video before the virus shut everything down but didnt make it in time before Macy's temporarily closed all of their stores until further notice. Dont know if that means liquidation wrapped up early or if it will resume once the company opens its stores again. Sad to see it close. I have visited the Meijer next door several times. I live less than two miles from here. It was my go to for nearly everything.
JCPennys is officially closed too. The pandemic will be the final nail in this mall's coffin. Only stores that have an outside entrance will see the light of day until they relocate to area plazas.
Even the main road (Howe Ave.) from the highway was as terrible as the parking lot. It's finally getting worked on now but for Chapel Hill, it's far too late.
Last time I stepped inside was for a pair of work shoes and the experience wasn't great. Getting heckled by survey takers only to be insulted because I wanted no part of it.
I can't imagine anything to replace the structure. The area doesn't have a demand for anything that isn't already 10-15 mins outside of it.

I grew up in the Akron area, and Summit Mall was always the "fanciest" of the three malls that you mentioned.
I've actually never even been to Rolling Acres Mall. It was pretty much dead even back in the early 2000s when I was in High School.
Chapel Hill was the one I went to the most frequently, and it was pretty vibrant when I was an adolescent and teenager. It had been renovated in the 1990s and was completely full of stores. I would typically enter through the food court, which seemed impressive to me as a teenager.
The other mall that people would sometimes go to was Belden Village Mall, which is closer to Canton, but had some different stores.

Chapel Hill Mall was the closest mall to where I live. While I visited snd shopped there frequently, I always preferred Summit and Belden Village Malls. Both are in somewhat more affluent areas and, while the malls themselves are nice, are supported by a much better out-of-mall selection of shops and restaurants.
This is the third all in my general area to have been closed; Rolling Acres, Carnation Mall in Alliance and, now, Chapel Hill.

My whole family loved Malls. From the early 60s thru the 90s. We spent a lot of time shopping for many occasions/car repairs etc. I had my first date at a Mall when I was 16. I was so nervous. These are just a few memories that impacted my family and myself. Times were slower and very personnel. Now thru the mist of a crippling virus, people have more time to remember the best times of there lives. Yours and Nates videos do just that. Keep the videos coming and most of all stay safe.

My late mother worked for Sears for nearly 40 years.I can recall as a pre-teen I would be dropped off and walk the mall for a few hours while my mother worked. You couldn't imagine doing that nowadays. The end has come for this place. Rolling Acres the second for sure. Such a dark and desolate place.

We may have just missed each other when you shot this. This was my childhood mall and I still live in the area. It’s sad to see what it’s become. I actually chatted up one of the shop employees who’s worked at the mall since the 90s; there is a committee of mall employees who are actively involved in mall affairs, but its current owner doesn’t seem interested in reviving it. Sounds like the current issues with Kmart... if you have a hankering to return to the Akron area, the JCPenney extended its closing sale to July 17th
