  • Dead Mall: McKinley Mall - Blasdell, NY. Right on the edge of the Buffalo suburbs of Blasdell and Hamburg is this old mall whose best days are long behind her. Opening in 1985, McKinley Mall saw its peak in the 90s despite the Walden Galleria dominating the Buffalo region by being a very successful mall. Unlike Eastern Hills, Seneca, and Thruway Malls which all saw their demise as a result, McKinley hung on... That was until the mid 2000s and the recession of 2008 which began the downward spiral. With anchors closing in the late 2010s and the pandemic of 2020 causing most businesses to struggle and several mall tenants to cloae the downward spiral for McKinley accelerated to its current state now. This is how we saw it in early May 2021.

    This was my old stomping grounds. I grew up at this mall and every teenager in the area came there. I had the best times of my youth spent there. Now sadly it's a far distant memory and a little fragment of what it was. Back in the day it was lit! Christmas time you could barely move and only walk two feet without running into someone you knew. It's really ashame that now only the memories remain. I will miss those days forever.

    Another mall bites the dust. Feel sorry for the small stores that are trying to stay afloat with an outside entrance. There has to be a way to bring people in again. Thanks for the video.😊

    Most of the malls in the Buffalo area are closer to the city, in the first ring of suburbs. McKinley Mall was built for people in the Southtowns, who had a longer drive to the Walden Galleria, Boulevard, or Eastern Hills malls. It was a great mall, anchored by Macy's (Sibley's, Kaufmann's), the Bon Ton (AM&As), Sears, and JC Penney - only JC Penney is still standing. They have tried to keep it open by adding additional stores that open to the outside, like Bed, Bath & Beyond, Ulta (now closed) and Best Buy, but I'm afraid that if JC Penney closes, it will be all over. It's a nice, clean, walkable mall with a few stores left - and obviously the pandemic isn't helping mall traffic and stores at all. I was nostalgic even watching this video, because the food court is entirely closed at this point, along with some of the other stores on the video. It seems that shopping (for those of us that still want to try things on) is reverting back to open-air plazas. There is a plaza less than a mile from this mall with a Target, Home Goods, Ulta, and many other stores, restaurants, and a movie theatre that does very well. With Buffalo weather being what it is at certain times of the year, I can't explain why uncovered plazas do better...

      It’s bizarre to me. I miss the days of looking forward going to the mall getting all your shopping done at one place and than going to a restaurant/ food court afterwards for a nice meal. But with nothing there it’s depressing. Online shopping is nice buts it not the same as human interaction / trying things on I’m sorry. It blows my mind that if the roof was chopped off and it was a plaza it would be successful.

    Our mall has a gym, arts performances area, school, trampoline park yet still very dead. The fye, candy shop, old navy and Spencer's left due to new owners doubling rent. New owners are killing our mall fast. Maybe 8 stores open and most non traditional. I think it has like 70 empty areas

      @WallieB26  Před 2 lety +2

      Oh I know. What they did is horrible. Kayla worked for Best Buy and filled me in on all the news. Though she had been long gone already, she is still friends with some of her old coworkers from there. It's despicable what the ceo did to those working full time for years and years. Dedicating their LIVES to that company just to have her throw them all away basically. I haven't shopped there since. I won't spend another dollar there because of her selfishness. Rather than take a pay cut since you know she's rich and makes 900% more than the employees, nah... just get rid of everyone that made the company what it is.

      Uh-Oh, what exactly has 'Best Buy' done? Are they going down the same path their arch-rival Circuit City went down a decade or so ago? CEO (of Circuit City) at the time was a fella by the name of Philip Schoonover (sp?). He fired all the experienced long-time sales staff to save on payroll and accrued vacation time and replaced them with just-over-minimum-wage part time teenagers and college-age students. He collected a multi-million dollar bonus that year for his "cost-saving brilliance". Within 18 months Circuit City was in Chapter 11 Bankruptcy proceedings and would end up liquidating / closing all its stores. You'd think Best Buy would have learned from watching their primary competitor self-immolate, but I guess folks have a short memory.

    • @irefusetoaskmydoctorifyour6401
      @irefusetoaskmydoctorifyour6401 Před 2 lety +2

      I can tell you a funny story about my last experience in a Best Buy. (Pre-pandemic) I was shopping for a laptop computer. A young employee glommed onto me like white-on-rice. He kind of hovered near me and it made me kind of nervous, and, every time I would ask him a question, he would basically just re-phrase my question as a statement and repeat it back to me. I noticed that he was furiously scribbling in a little notepad the whole time. When I moved to leave the store (without making any purchase), he tore off a sheet from the notepad and handed it to me. He had basically written down everything I had said to him while I was in the store! And I could see there were 3 copies, one to give to the 'customer' one to turn in to his manager, and one for the 'associate' to keep. I guess they expect the employees to keep account of what they are doing with their time.

    This is becoming an all too common sight. Malls are dying even here up in Canada. I've made the occasional side trips to this place during my U.S. getaways, and for all the stores affected by this I am truly sorry for this malls demise. In particular, I hope the best for Dean's Hollywood and arcade. This is a very friendly family owned business that sells unique movie and music memorabilia including a large selection of SLAYER merchandise. Double devil horns for that. But their arcade is nothing like any other place. The cleanliness and sanitation protocols would never give covid a chance to breed. When large families would come in, Dean himself would come out to greet the members and cheer them on as they played the games. Afterwards, he would award extra redemption tickets to the kids for their efforts so they could claim larger prizes. Let's see Cheezie Charlies do that. I wish them the best at their impending new location. I'll be one of the first ones in line.

    Did you say Kohan owns McKinley Mall in your video? If so they own the mall I grew up with here in Clay, New York called the Great Northern Mall. It is soo sad every time I go back there to see how it is doing on the inside. At most there is maybe 6 stores left open including a Time Out arcade in the food court area that has no restaurants open anymore. We lost our 10 screen Regal Cinema due to the health crisis. I personally loved that theater. Had the nicest employees ever. I remember when I was younger and most of the mall was occupied. I saw Drake Bell from the show Drake and Josh on Nickelodeon perform for free in the food court area. I have soo many great memories from there. :(

    This mall was a couple of hours from my home. I liked shopping in it as it wasn’t so huge as the Walden Galleria. Back in the day the mall had lots of Canadian shoppers. Then the mid 2000’s hit and the property began its downward spiral. The Canadian shoppers left. Now in late 2021 it’s beyond repair. The chance of attracting new anchors is hopeless, even if they existed. The mall itself is nothing much in terms of architecture. It’s rather dull. So this is clearly the case that the land is worth more than the mall itself. Demolition will come in the future and the land will be repurposed.
