  • The former Rolling Acres Mall in Akron, Ohio is a perfect example of the indoor shopping mall boom of the 1970's. Rolling Acres was a beautiful mall, but after 35 years of operation and a colorful history it closed. The mall was left abandoned for many years before being demolished. Many contributed the mall closure to the high crime rate in the Akron area along with strong retail competition and other newer malls in the area.

    I had a dream about Rolling Acres last night. I remembered the entire layout. Man what a time we had growing up at this mall. Good times❤.

      @@Mographology The reputation was not reality. Just like the report about gunshots being heard - was not true but it definitely made the people in the suburbs wary of going. And every week there was a new rumor going around about some threat to shoppers.

    It wasn’t just the retail apocalypse that killed the mall, security concerns was also a factor

      Thanks I think I make more like this in the future. The only one I've been to is Cincinnati Mills. I went there 2 years ago and it was completely abandoned except for a bass pro shop. It's a huge 2 story mall very creepy...I think it still may be open somehow.

    Another infamous mall not far in that area was Randall Park. Also my childhood mall in Milwaukee Wisconsin where I’m from that’s also infamous was Northridge Mall.

      @@WhatstheStory123 Oh yes definitely look up Northridge of Milwaukee Wisconsin. It sits abandoned since 2003. It’s sister mall Southridge Mall is quite the opposite by thriving high. The reason I brought up Northridge is it went down in a very similar manner as Rolling Acres and Randall Park.

    My daughter worked at Rolling Acres briefly.. About the 3rd weekend ,there was a crime committed that we were not aware of. Word got back to us and immediately we would not let her work there again..Instead we had her work where we were both employed.. Another crime was reported ,but not on the local news. We had family members who were in L.E. & knew that gorgeous Mall was dead. Or soon to die... Sad sad sad.

    I grew up in that area and spent childhood to teen years as a regular patron. I even worked there selling knives at Cutlery World for a while.
    That part of Ohio was pretty bad as far as race relations went. Very segregated and everybody was suspicious of everyone else. A lot of people would just look for any excuse or reason to dig in deeper with their mistrust or fear. Rolling Acres was kind of ground zero for that.
    The parents of the girl I was dating would never let her go there during the night and only with a group during the day. They were terrified of a racial incident and also the achilles rapist. Supposedly there was a guy who would hide under cars then cut the achilles tendon of unsuspecting ladies getting into their cars. He would then have his way with them. I don't think there was ever a case of that being reported, but it was real in their minds.
    All my times there, I never saw any violence. Unruly teens (of all races) were common, but teens are gonna teen.

      @@WhatstheStory123 There were variations of the story going around the country. No truth to them and I suspect it was a story concocted by husbands who did not like the missus going to the mall and shopping.

    Another Rolling Acres video by someone who didn't live here, never so much as stepped foot in the mall and filled with misinformation. Alot of it is correct as for construction but as always with people writing stories about places they never been but seen on the internet that they thought was cool is filled with misinformation. Like the "body found hanging outside the mall" was not really outside the mall but a block away". There is a difference if a body is found hanging in your front yard or a block away. Idiotic.

    • @WhatstheStory123
      @WhatstheStory123  Před rokem +2

      @WhatstheStory123  Před rokem +1

      The only place I stepped foot on was the Amazon building that's now there I did some work there and became interested. Sounds like you live in Arkon maybe you should make a video about it you as you sound like an expert on the history. You have nothing on your channel why is that if you know so much?

    • @user-kh2dg7it2nn
      @user-kh2dg7it2nn Před rokem +2

      The point you was trying to make was you was in a bad neighborhood I get that but you did so with misinformation by reporting "a body was found hanging outside the mall" when it was a block away is misinformation. I get your point about the bad neighborhood but if a shooting took place a block away and I told someone there was a shooting on my front porch its definitely misinformation and exaggerated making it seem like there was a body just hanging right at the front entrance of the mall. Lol.

    • @user-kh2dg7it2nn
      @user-kh2dg7it2nn Před rokem +2

      When did I ever insinuate that I "know so much"? and that I'm an "expert" Just because I knew something you didn't that there was no body "hanging outside the mall" and it was about a block away?. That to you leaves you thinking I "know so much"?. Also I dont have a channel, I created an account years ago to watch, comment or like videos.
