Do you have any tips for longer XC rides? Let us know!
Just. Keep. Peddling
Be prepared for mechanicals/multiple flats. I used to treat 4-hr rides like an XCO race and would ride with as little weight as possible until I had a couple mechanical/multiple flat days where I had to walk a long way from home. Now in addition to plenty of nutrition and water, I bring enough tubes/plugs and tools to get out of most situations. Oh, and clothes for the worst-case scenario of weather forecast.
lock/tighten up that front fork, it was diving hard on the climbs/pedaling
Little more pressure in the rear tires to avoid pinch flats. Good bike setup to keep it comfortable, good saddle (ergon for me :)) hydration, food and good pace, well done! 3hours my average ride time
Global Mountain Bike Network - My tip, start hydrating within an hour before setting off to ride, it doesn’t take much. It’s easier to stay hydrated as opposed to starting with an empty tank.
Sign Oli up! As much as I'd hate to admit it, I'm not out there doing back flips and smashing long downhill runs... I am out in the country mashing the pedals for 2-3 hours and this video was spot on.
A thousand times this. Well done Oli.
Exactly!!!
Yeah, ultimately I have to go to work and this is just a hobby so this is much more reflective of my actual riding even if I do love watching the rest of it 👍
adammoonface couldn’t agree more! More of this content please @gmbn!!!
I end up doing 6 hour rides in the desert regularily without the energy gels or a lot of water.
You guys NEED and XC guy in a crew, more coverage. Truth is - most of your viewers are more likely ride like this, and not bomb 20 foot jumps and do backflips :)
old comment now, but it's still true. Need more XC coverage, may as well cover bike packing too. I think there's a new bikepacking special coming up soon.
GXCN?
Indeed
yess more XC and marathon advices please guys. it's very interesting👍
Shout out to the camera guy who do his job for 3hour straight out in the woods ..
Bike preservation...
Keep wheels on the ground...
30 seconds later blake's manualing the doubles...😆
It is a long walk home with a buckled wheel, carrying the bike...
He was preserving the front wheel! 😜
That is keeping the wheels on the ground
And that’s why I love Blake
Yes! More XC!
I agree more xc
100% second that!
XCBN
Did you notice the overwhelming good response to doing a video on XC GMBN? That's because it's what most of us ride, keep up the good work, perhaps you could show which GPS headunit is best and what are the best sites for downloading gpx rides from and how to share your gpx rides with others?
Yeah well I don't fancy replacing my parts all the time and riding my bike like it's disposable since I'm not a pro racer.
This might be my fav vid of all time. Soooo useful. Oli is a first class teacher and Blake is a brilliant student and they have great chemistry. Loved it.
Totally agree!
We love XC content like this! Keep it up!
I would love to hear more from Oli Beckisale. This was a very informative episode. I am an older rider (58) XC is more my style, more rolling less sending. The tips Oli shared really gave me some great techniques I will try on the trail next time I'm out. Thanks to Ole and Blake for an entertaining and informative episode.
Daniel Flynn you’re not an older rider, you are still a youngster..... I am 72, but I agree with you this is my type of riding as well, 3-4 hours is my average ride covering 30-40 miles on a Ti hardtail 29er. I plan on doing ‘The Tour of the Cornfields’ on 6th September-68 miles based from Wimpole Hall near Cambridge.
Yes, more XC please, these 3h rides, 800-900m total climbing are my preferred style.
Yeah XC stuff with Blake. Thanks a bunch @gmbn.
Yes, XC and Trail! gimme more
Do I detect sarcasm??
This was great, haven't seen many talk about the longer ride, thanks guys
Energy gels are Bananas that have been in your bag all day get bashed around xD
Loads of insights right there ... more of XC pls? Keep coming!
More XC please!
More XC stuff please! Oli was an excellent presenter too :)
Blake is the best! By far the best MTB personality.
Great to see a detailed video with Oli. He's been an interesting and informative guest on the podcasts. Hope to see more trail ride content on the channel.
that maxxis aspen rear + nobby nic front combo! WOW!
orange juice and cocaine before the race its the breakfast of champion XD
😂😂😂
I've been riding a cross country trails for so long till now. Love the morning nature smell surrounded while riding! Normal riding from 25 km every weekend or more km depending. And the high peak ride about 60 - 65 km !
P/s; I'm also ride on all mountain and enduro trails, sometime !
Great tips guys ! Keep more up on cross country trail tips! Cheese from Malaysia cross country rider !
Finally some XC content! Feels like It's been years since the last...
An DIY isotonic mixed drink in my bottles is all the carbs I need. No one needs über-expensive gels with unnecessary packaging. Let's reduce waste and save some money.
Great idea, what do use if you don't mind me asking mate.
nice & informative! Common sense and fun combined. Liked this one a lot.
4:55 it's called acorn climb as this is what your sack looks like after 20 laps!
Just seen this (10 months after it was posted) really good video, would be great to have more like this as - going by many other comments - it's what a lot of viewers do: head out for 2-3 hours... Also You was a great guest, be cool to have him on again
Can we have more Oli please? Thank you.
More content like this please, I certainly prefer lighter trail to xc riding. And Oli is great of course.
One of my routes is 25 miles, off road, 45 minute 10% grade climb. I really have to pace the approach and climb to make it.
I'm a road biker ( though I love the idea of XC) one of my routes is 15 miles with one of the hills 3 miles long at almost 38 percent grade.
Dem hills murder me but the flat after words is heaven.
I got into XC biking in March and had to learn all of this the hard way. Clif energy gels with a bit of caffeine have been a life saver.
Loving the XC
More from Oli please! Great presentation and he has such a big CV to share!
This will definitely help with my trail riding! Thank you!
this...
something worth to add to saved list!
Love that XC content - brilliant !
Yes!Awesome. XC is what I'm loving. I love the downhill stuff too. I've picked up so much information and tips from this 12 minute video.👍👍
You guys keep my excitement up for going mountainbiking. Every time I think I don't want to go I watch one of your videos and get on my bike :)
Wow, just wow. The effort they put for this is awesome.
Love this one. Would be great to get more tips like this with Oli Beckingsale!
This simple video told me things I already knew, but presented so simply and logically probably helped me more than any other to date! Many thumbs up for this one!!!
You can really see the difference between an xc rider and downhill rider. Blake did not know about those xc tips. More XC content please, like others have said, I think majority of viewers are doing Xc riding.
Great advice! Exactly what I try to achieve 👍
Great video Blake and Oli.
This how I've been riding for about 2 years now. Really enjoy the longer rides I do.
Had to teach myself to slow my pace down but once you find your right pace it's great.
More videos like these #GMBN 👊🤘
Love the tips from the champ! Thanks for the video!
This is great and will come in handy when riding gravel. I knew some of it, but that food one new to me and will be doing this on my Sunday ride!
Very good experience ...thank you folks
Thank You for this channel! Ilove it!
Awesome tips. Thank you!
Nice to see you guys enjoying Clifton.
great video - please more one like this! Even though you made some videos how to train - maybe longer videos on how to train for an XC event - like more in depth - how to set certain goals (endurance, power) and how to achieve them
Great video I learnt a lot from this after getting pain in the knees on 20 mile South Downs rides
I always ride 2-3 hours with one bottle of water and no food. I dont even eat anything before normally. Sometimes its getting hard at the end, but its a good training.
My kind of riding!
Loved that, going to watch this a few times
Great advice re those climbs, spot on!
Great advice, wish I would have seen this 5 days ago, before i road the VERMONT 50😂😁🤗👍🏽💪🏽
Well put, you guys are inspiring!!
Advice I so needed. I’m always going too hard on the climbs and it ruins me for the descents. Thank you! 👊🏼
Enjoyed this. I did Leadville 100 and the advice rings true.
More like this please!
Some good advice I make long rides all the time and all this will help out bigtime my issue is bike preservation I can't help myself lol I break my bike so much on the way down got to work on taking it easy I probably won't but it's in mind now thanks.
Wow Oli described my sunday morning rides!
Super helpful video guys. Thanks!!
I review this video at least 4x a year. I learned a lot from this video, & always adore being reminded by it. It helped me improve my XC biking even only as a beginner!
Lots'a love, cheers, & Mabuhay, from tropical Philippines! #KeepBiking
Wow! Maybe it's because of the perfect timing (this is something I'm working on right now) but this was one of the best, most informational videos (while still fun) I've seen in a while. Great work guys, and thank you!!
Honestly, just love your stuff, I’m thinking of doing some XC racing this coming year and rely on you guys for information
Great informative video! Would like to hear Oli's tips on locking out suspension - When for front, rear, or both, etc. The longer hill portion was excellent info!
I envy those trails.
Thank you for XC video.
Good Job also to the one's working behind the scenes! 👏🏻
So Nice! 👍😎
Great, informative video.
For longer rides I always set myself a goal. A trail on the map a bit further away I'm keen to explore (sometimes I come back, sometimes it ends up hike a bike), old castle, nice café, in my area there are many caves, sometimes I just check routes for coming back with the kids to ride or hike. This helps my mindset and also I have a close look at the map before so I know which climb goes over 50m ascent, which covers 150m ascent.
Can't wait to find Blake lurking in Leigh woods
Excellent video, cheers!
That was awesome information
I really needed this vid more than you know Thank you so much
Great informative clip. More please on XC. Thx
Excellent!!
Awesome info
Great video 👍. This my style of riding. Thanks 😊
I went with the kids (11 and 13) on a 3-hr afternoon ride, 22.73 miles... my secret was to not tell them how far we were going :P
It was a beautiful day thought - windy, sun tucked in the clouds... they came home looking better than on our typical 13 mi rides at dusk!
I don’t think I could have done that myself at their age... but then again, I didn’t have the bikes they have at that age!
When he said three hours all I could think was “wow such a short ride” after my 25 mile, 2700ft gain loop yesterday all I could think was to do it all again 😅
Recovering roadie here ✋ track stands, clipping in, and pure endurance are really my only starting MTB skills 😂
I go for a 10-20 mile ride to be-able to stay out for long periods of time also Wear light clothing if it’s a hot day
great vid
Great vid!! Thanks 👍👍👍
Good tips for beginners like me who is enjoying long rides and trails inbetween.
I watch everything GMBN puts out because you guys make it all interesting. But like a lot of folks who have chimed in, I'm never going to be doing the Blakes stuff (I'm going on 75), but I love this kind of rolling, woodsy, riding--and going pretty hard at it. More XC and more training tips would be most welcome. Best, from Santa Cruz, CA. Jocko
Yes, I have a tip for longer XC rides. Put down the damn fork and go do some high intensity interval exercises and strength training outside your riding.
Although the technical tips are appreciated, I'm pretty sure Oli Beckinsale owed a lot to proper nutrition and conditioning exercises when he was competing at the very top level of riding. I would be surprised if he went out for sandwiches, cake and tea after a ride.
As the saying goes: sometimes dropping 10 pounds off your gut will serve you better than shaving 10 pounds off your bike by buying carbon everything...and cheaper too.
I love your videos. Well done 💪🏻💪🏻
Cool Video. Loved it. More XC stuff please!!!
epic, thanks for the knowledge
It's really a lot of XC riding wisdom from a well-disciplined Olympian - conserve the bike conserve the energy. 50-60 grams carb of food every hour for a long round and 500ml water per hour and a lot more. A smooth ride is key for 29ers no jumps, bike conservation is key, 80-90 rpm sitting on the saddle, 10-20 sec climbs burst out of the saddle breathing, pace sections, elbows near the knees for climbs, pacing looking ahead, 10 sec climbs out of the saddle, look at the muscle. Wow, I will remember this. On my part of the word, there are more XC type bike runs a few trails. Thanks, Sir Olie. The XC is a very narrow niche very specialized kind of ride if your ask Sir Olie here.
That guy is a hell of a teacher
More of this content! More XC skills and stuff
Thats the style of riding I love.
Ride along a couple of fun backwoods trails but actually also go places with your bike.
But miss me with that energy gel.
I agree. It's much more relevant to the riding I do than most GMBN content, although that's useful too. I enjoy exploring places on my bike. One thing I'd like to see covered is navigation on a mountain bike. It's different enough from finding your way on for it deserves special attention.
I love my DH, but realistically, I have to ride to my favourite descents. Probably most of my riding counts as XC, so this is perfect, thanks!
Great guest! Nice tipps!
Thanks! We hope you can take these and use them on your next ride 👍
@@gmbn Yes, I have internalised the tipps of Mr. Beckingsale. Thanks a lot for your helpful upload GMBN!
A lot of great advice in a short vid. Like!
