My ultimate XC climbing technique is... Get down from your bike and push 👌😂
🤣
🤣 the best plan B!
Not bad at all😁👍
Same
😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅
I have a cheap walmart bike hard tail . Its cheap but fun it does the job for now .
Glad you're enjoying it! Safe riding! 👊
Great to see a bit of xc content, more please Rich.
Nice one Rich. Great to see some advice for us real world mtb'ers. It's not all about going ever faster downhill (looking at you Neil 😊).
Thanks For the great comment! Happy riding 🙌
I’m a old guy who loves climbing rocky hills riding deer trails in the desert ,this advice is spot on ,I don’t jump anymore or race but give me the technical rocky stuff don’t mind falling at a slower speed ya see ,looks a little frosty, hot toddy time
Such an awesome presentor
You didn't mention suspension setup. Should you ride hard or smooth or just in the middle. Should you lock up the front suspension?
Yeah, this is a good one. The advice is much appreciated. My local trails are unmanaged forestry trails near the sea, so I have a lot of sand and roots to contend with. My main conundrum is how to keep the front end of the bike down, but keep the back wheel from spinning. It's a fun challenge and I'm so stoked when I get up an uphill section without putting my feet down.
I do love these XC videos by Rich 😊
Great reminders for us older riders....ridden that rocky climb many times... just after the christmas break is the hardest!!
Thanks for this, I have most of this OK, but I do struggle to stop it lifting the front wheel and will try that riding position and see how that works.
I agree with Rich's take on body position since I do the same thing. I am never comfortable feeling the tip of the saddle poking my bum while climbing. XD
Yeah, good body positioning when climbing is so key! It's a nightmare when you are struggling to get traction on that pesky front wheel! 👍
Nice, I recognise that first track. I punctured one the way down.!!!!
Thanks for going out in such cold to film this episode Rich! Very helpful and much appreciated! ❤
Rich has gloves on!
Just got my jersey love the vids
Another factor is find spot to recover if you can. Especially on a tough technical climb that is done in the video . Even a bit of a track stand can get you a few breaths of rest and able to regroup and get back at it .
Great video 😃 it's cold there 🥶 Rich wears gloves 🥶
Oval chainring. I’ve found they lay the power down evenly especially at low speed/ low cadence. Rich is right about keeping a high cadence but riding technical climbs you can easily make the tiniest miscalculations and loose what little moment you had, loose too much speed and a gear change is no longer a option. An oval chain ring can help with pulling you out of that situation, less chance of spinning out as you stomp on the pedals.
laying power down evenly and having a smooth cadence is an advantage since you keep momentum but that its more efficient is a common misconception and on road or gravel it doesnt matter at all. All the power comes from pushing down so having a perfect smooth even circle is actually less efficient research has shown
Where can i buy this tube holder?
What is the name/brand of that tube strap you have to hold you spare tube?
just back from a xc ride lol on my stumpy, my advice is play about with differant tyre's coz they make a huge differance!! as my stump jumper is alot better bike than my other one but the thing is horrible doing xc on it haha down to the tyres on it they are a lot better in the ice though and for going down trailes they just dont roll anyway near as fast as the ones on my hard tail that i normaly use, didnt use it as i just found out i must have got a slow puncher again..............bloody thorns at it again most likely!!
Cheers
Drop the elbows and get the forearms/body position parallel to the ground - works better for me
Good one Rich. I hear the freezing mouth going on in your speak! Cuppa hot joe for me would be what's next!
Locking out the front suspension helps also.
Remember bar ends, great for climbing, still use mine
Ive never ridden my xc bike without them since they was invented.
The best invention for a xc bike rider ever.
Orrrrr shuttle with friends 😅😬🤙
Bar ends! People don't seem to understand why bar ends were created in the first place. Well they were created to give you more leverage on the back tire and get more traction. But Mark that is why riser bars were created (you). Here is my point of contention: If you take riser bars and put bar ends on them what happens? Way more traction is what happens. The point of my rant it that bar ends are a forgotten tech that you can still utilize. Now to whether all the anti-bar end comments even if they are too young to know what they are talking about. Cheers! - M
I'm definitely the young you're talking abt, but imo barends are so absolutely horrendous looking it'd slow me down mentally. Even xc can have some drip.
When i had regular riser-bars on my bike, i never felt the need for bar-ends. Now that i run Molokos bars (alt-flats), they're not even compatible due to the 34° backsweep. I'll use the horns as bar-ends where i can (horns also good on longer stretches or hill-bombing on asphalt). The degree of backsweep i have also puts me in a more natural mid-forward position when standing/pedaling. The oval chainring also helps with climbing grip; no dead spot in your pedal-stroke.
This is the first time I've seen Rich wearing gloves🤣🤣🤣
Nice vid! But how does one get up climbs that are so steep you just fall over backwards when sitting on the saddle?
What you do is grab your moto friends with a lasso lean forward and get a lift
@@dillonhayes3402 🤣🤣
You are allowed to stand up.
I just put it in turbo !
My ultimate climbing is running with bike in up-hill 😅
So you're saying my tyres shouldn't be at 45 psi?
We wouldn't advise running a pressure that high. If you're riding XC, then the chances are you'll lose traction on steep and slippery climbs. 45 psi is always quite close to the max psi tyre manufactures recommend. We hope this helps! 👍
My biggest mistake on climbing is that I'm not in the right shape for climbing anymore. 😂😂😂
So this is an upcountry video?
6 x Mount Everest in a year.. You need at least 6 x 8.848 = 53.088 meter elevation a year. or better even more. having done that, you can climb rapidly :). For sure. No Ebike, just with a HARDTAIL.
Enduro=💪🗿
The bum more rear and waist more bent is fine, but the cost is in the thigh strength...
LACK OF TRAINING. In my opinion, that is the main reason why most people aren´t fast enough in uphill climbing. high pulse limits your performance. BR Daniel
Maybe just buy and EMTB😜. You get up hills much quicker then.
That's the lazy way out.
@@radiocontrolled9181 Its not lazy, you just get up there a lot quicker. Then you get to come down again
@@WhitehillsFarm You suffer much less to go up, so it's lazy to me. But anyway it's still biking and all biking is nice.
So
Weird advice about climbing, apparently picking the right line is crucial on an xc bike because you don't have big enduro tyres and extra travel to plow over everything, since when did you need big tyres and extra travel when climbing? I think he conflated bombing downhill with climbing.
That is an odd point. I run an Enduro tire up front and it doesn't help that much if i pick a bad line uphill. Granted, i ride a rigid bike and bad line choices will be doubly noted even though I have Some fudge-factor with a 2.6(R), 2.8(F) plus an oval chainring that has lots of pedaling grip. Also, it was not noted that sometimes you have to stand & stomp or alternate standing/stomping with sitting/spinning in a more technical single-track climb. (Esp. with switchback turns) The local mountains and trails we have are more challenging than that black square rated, straight climb the gent in the video was using as an example. There's a section on Total Recall (curvy techish single-track) where you descend, hit a dip, grab a few gears Quick-like, climb a fast right-handed bank turn and sit/grind the straight part to the crest. It's definitely rocky and rewards a beefier tire plus a combination of climbing techniques in an intense, short section. The point being, that not all climb types are best ascended with one technique only within the section.
Nice pink helmet, very masculine.
Life is not a race.
Just get an e bike.
No thanks. Until my legs are strong enough I'll push on those pedals as hard as I can to get to the top. Slower yes, but with no assistance, so prouder too 💪
XC sounds boring 😴
Dammnnn. Super cool techniques... But that bussy though 💀💀💀
