    Pretty enlightening to see how the bullets ricochet off the ground.

    I've never shot any tracer ammo, but I do enjoy a good video like this. Everyone is having a good time seeing the bullet path and impact on the steel.

      It's pretty awesome from behind the scope too - I'd like to get a scope mounted cam and shoot this again.

    What would be cool is set the camera by the target looking back at the shooter and see the tracers come at you.

  • @tjp7927
    @tjp7927 Před 3 lety

    How long the the barrel? I'm guessing 18in? I read somewhere that a rifle needs a certain length barrel to be able to ignite the tracer. I wonder what the minimum barrel length is.

    • @pickinthatbanjo
      @pickinthatbanjo Před 9 měsíci +1

      How exactly would barrel length matter in any way? It's the initial ignition of the powder charge in the casing that ignites the tracer compound. M62 is all I've shot but it has a very thin copper cap, ideally just use wc844t mil-surp powder as that was what M-62 used to ignite it. I can't get that here but IMR-4895 also reliably ignites the compound. Hope that helps if you still wondered two years later.
      Also I've heard Hogden 4895 works, and I've heard Varget works, and BC-L(2), but I can't speak for those powders as I've not tried them myself. Basically you just need to use a powder that is ignite the tracer, and make sure that you fire the tracer at a distance appropriate to the type of tracer you have. A lot don't even begin visually tracing until after 50-100 yards due to delaying agents that coat the tracer compound.

    I'm curious how far the round travels after the ricochet!

    • @kylewooton608
      @kylewooton608 Před 4 lety +3

      J.C. Brown not far. It’s already expended 60-70% of its energy at 800, hitting the ground its dumping so much more, maybe traveled another 75-100 yards

    • @br4713
      @br4713 Před 3 lety +2

      Ok the bullet lost a big part of its energy at 800yds, but if the ricochet occurs with a flat angle on the ground I wouldn't be surprised if the bullet goes few hundreds yards or a kilometers further. With these calibers the bullet can't travel further than 5 kilometers away (barrel pointing to the sky with a 45° angle) so it should be the real safety distance (dont forget that for a simple tiny .22lr bullet it would be 1 mile !).

    Will you hear the bang before it hits you?

    • @pickinthatbanjo
      @pickinthatbanjo Před 9 měsíci

      Well the round is supersonic so no, it would hit you while still burning away since they burn for around four seconds. And than you'd hear the bang as you tried to figure out what the hell happened.

    Nice presentation but how does this work, you shoot a nice video, then decide to put a piece of grapy music on top of it to ruin everything, well done
