M134 Minigun: The Modern Gatling Gun

  • Minigun in slow motion: • Slow Motion: M134 Minigun
The General Electric M134 "Minigun" is essentially an electrically-powered Gatling gun - the conceptual operation of the gun is identical to Dr. Gatling's original creation. What has changed, however, is the chambering (it's in 7.62 NATO), the power source (an electric motor), and the feed mechanism (belt-feed using M60 links instead of the Gatling's Accles, Broadwell, or Bruce feeds). The weapon was a scaled down version of a 20mm rotary powered cannon devised for aircraft armament after WW2, hence the "mini" name. It was used primarily as helicopter armament, although it has found its way only ground vehicles as well. Firing between 3000 and 6000 rounds per minute, the Minigun is ideal for aerial engagements where the gunner only has a brief moment on target and needs to fire as much as possible during that moment.
It is a truly awe-inspiring weapon, and quite an experience to fire! In addition to destroying a truck with it, we will look at disassembly and functioning of the minigun - the delinking mechanism is really the most complex part of the weapon, and a very interesting device.
Thanks to Modern Arms of Tempe, AZ for providing the Minigun for this video! They offer the gun for rental, if you are interested in trying it out yourself.

The system was very dependent on timing. the ammo drum in an AH-1 could carry 6000 rounds in a rotary drum which had a separate drive motor and slipper clutch drive which needed to be timed with the feeder and the Gun. If a gun system was properly timed and proper trigger control used by the flight crew it would fire days long without failure.

The first Minigun prop in the movie Predator was actually incredibly dangerous. It was just firing blanks, but it ejected the shells so hard that it kept cracking the protective Plexiglas they used in 80's. In fact one shell imbedded so deeply into the Plexiglas Jesse Ventura refused to use it any more until they could come up with a safer system. So eventually back in LA the studio's armors came up with a new mock up. This new prop ejected the shells slow enough they no longer were a threat. That gun would later be used for decades after in many many movies.

We used the humvee as cover and our Minigun was fine I didnt have any ear protection and let me tell yea. This thing has a very distinct sound when firing it sounds like a Very loud and distorted sweeper and the rounds eject so quickly the chimes of the casings hitting create almost like a musical chime lol.
As a E5 Grenadier I can say this thing is a beast and can cut anyone in half who is unfortunate enough to be in its line of fire. If you switch out its ammo to explosive rounds it can do more then cut people in half.

And here we see the difference between Forgotten Weapons, FPSRussia, Iraq Veteran, TFB TV, and hickock45. Ian fires the minigun at a truck merely to showcase its capabilities. FPSRussia would have loaded the truck full of tannerite and used the minigun to to shoot incendiary or tracer bullets at it. Iraq Veteran would have done a mud test on the minigun and shoehorned a 10/22 into the video. Alex from TFB would have somehow attempted to do a run-and-gun with the minigun. Hickock45 would have used the minigun to destroy 2-liter bottles.

With a rate of fire of 2000 rpm(and that's slow for a gatling) the game would need to "spawn" a new shot each frame, i do not think re5 does that.

1r0zz I wasn’t claiming anywhere near re 5 being realistic, all I meant was that compared to games that let you walk with an M34 with no power source or ammunition, re 5 had a bit more thought. Also, I will say the concept of ballistics is well simulated to the degree of resident evils style. Shots to the leg causes stumbles and falls. Shots to arms cause weapons to be dropped or fail. Damage I’ll give you but the plot explains why the plaga host becomes more durable.

3:21 When it comes to batteries, it is possible to get a Li-Po batteries under 3kg that could easily provide enough power. In movies they usually do not shoot for very long periods of time, so considering the amount of ammo needed it might still be possible, especially after slowing the motor down, but the recoil would be absolutely unbearable and I have to agree that it would be a really impractical gun.
