A Swarm of Angry Bees: The American 180 .22LR Submachine Gun
Vložit
- čas přidán 24. 03. 2017
- The American 180 is a .22 rimfire submachine gun that fires at 1200-1500 rounds per minute or more, and feeds from drums of 177 to 275 rounds capacity. While it makes a great recreational machine gun, it was actually initially developed with law enforcement sales in mind. The notion was that the .22LR cartridge posed a minimal danger of overpenetration and was extremely easy to control, and the many repeated hits that could be made with the American 180 would make up for its lack of ballistic effectiveness. And that's not necessarily incorrect.
Several law enforcement agencies did actually buy the guns, and one police shooting involving one is documented, from 1974. It never became really popular with police agencies, though, and production basically ground to a halt in 1986 when it became impossible to manufacture new machine guns for the civilian market.

they needed burst fire more than semi auto tbh, maybe a 5 round burst.
It was marketed to American law enforcement, anything less than “as lethal as possible” would be redundant
You can safely spray 180 rounds in the general direction of would-be bank robbers, and the rounds will bounce harmlessly off any women and children in the background.
It can also be used for pest control inside cramped concrete buildings.
It would defeat the purpose. If you ain't firing full-auto, you ain't firing 180.

This seems like a good gun for law enforcement to carry today (instead of M16s). So the advantages of 22lr for beginners come into consideration.

Its amazing how many damage you get when dozens of 22 impact at the same point.
It will saw through bulletproof glass like nothing else.
Imagine the damage that causes. You’d have to call the medic over to try and fix about 58 separate gunshot wounds, and that’s only if they get one good burst off.
It could indeed take a dozen rounds before one managed to get past the most of the ribcage or skull (.22LR LRN does not do well against heavy, rounded bone). But by the same token, a single shot through the eye or temple would drop the guy dead right there. .22LR is very strangely lethal in that regard.
I can saw an 8" tree with 100-200 .22lr in half in 5-10 min reloading in between shots with a semi auto 10/.22 , this gun is scarily lethal, there's no way you could patch up a burst from the American 180.
Try patching up some buck or bird shot from close quarter
You would not live long enough to get any medical help. A .22 is well capable of killing even in a single shot. The idea that it is somehow less lethal is a misconception.

It actually does have a Semi-Auto position, but it's the little side to side button behind the safe lever. The safety lever is safe and fire, then sliding the button side to side makes it fire semi or full. These are loads of fun.
If you do get the 275 round mags, you want to get the metal base plate for them, the lexan/plastic one doesn't work as well and causes miss-feeds.
The engineering involved in the design of the drum, is pretty impressive.
Any .22 that fires 1200 rpm, deserves a thumbs up!
Wish I could own one

Watched a video demonstration of one of these made in the late 1970's, where they sawed a Volkswagen Beetle in half with one. The user then wrote his name in a brick wall.
At that time, only the 177 round drum was available.
Many of those sold were bought by prisons for riot control (in the late 60's and throughout the 70's in particular there were quite a few riots in US prisons), as a "less lethal" weapon system.
probably one of your most entertaining videos ian
It looks like a thompson that rolled around in some 22 rounds and radioactive waste and this was born. I present to you, the ᵀʰᵒᵐᵖˢᵒᶰ
Also, a 275 round mag?! that must be the ones they use in all the action movies with the guns that have endless rounds
Super clever
Remember "The Last Action Hero"? (re-watch it if you need to)
Hollywood magazines in the movies. (As Arnie found out to his shock in "real life" in that movie)

275 round mag... and no mag dump? That is a missed opportunity that you will never have again. :(
i think there is a reason it comes with a spare barrel... Having no recoil doesn't mean you won't overheat the barrel if you put 275 rounds through it in less than 15 seconds.
@@random.3665 IV8888 couldnt get an auto 22 to overheat after 7000 rounds. It stopped firing due to junk build up.. I think the spare barrel would be more for just destroying the rifling from putting so many rounds through it. (Yes obviously heat plays a factor) but I dont think to the magnitude (I even previously thought) with a .22lr
@@michaelmacdonald329 Good point, didnt even think about all the residue building up, thanks for reminding me man.
@@random.3665 Yea Ian himself says you should clean it after each mag.
@@michaelmacdonald329 It's not his gun. He doesn't want to wear it down most likely.
I always wanted to see one of these fired. Thanks. I first saw one when our sheriff in Kaysville Utah showed it at some function. I am in my 50s and this took place when I was in jr high school. He said it would rip a hole through a solid oak door in no time. It came with the 2 barrels. One long and one short. There was a difference though. The horizontal fore stock had a laser integrated in the stock. Sheriff Larkins said that a man came to his office one day saying that his daughter just married and was moving to Kaysville. He owned a firearms company and needed the sheriff to fill out some paperwork so he could give the sheriff the best gun his company made so his daughter would be safe. This is the weapon that he gave sheriff Larkins.
the full auto sound when you shot it, for some reason, is so satisfying
For Law Enforcement: when the only way to stop a suspect is to quickly trace his outline in bullets
Yeah this thing would have torn apart some people.

Well this is no exaggeration but if a person stood still long enough (say a couple seconds) you could blow a hole through his torso big enough to look through and see behind him. The way this weapon works is on that principle that no other modern small arms uses; that of stacking projectiles on the same spot over and over and over. The ability to do that and do it fast puts this weapon into an entirely different category from any other .22 and indeed from any modern small arm. It's the same principle on how the 30 mm gun on a Warthog can ruin a tank. Modern tank armor could probably take a few hits from the 30 mm without full penetration. What no amount of tank armor can do is take 150 hits of 30 mm landing on the same area in fractions of a second.
Incidentally that's the reason that the much-vaunted reactive armor used on Russian tanks (because they don't know how to build effective laminated armor like we have) is still old, tired technology that will not save their tanks. I don't care if the entire tank is covered with explosive panels, the first part of that 150 round 30 mm burst is going to detonate or defeat every reactive panel on that tank and then the other 130 rounds arriving a few milliseconds later are going to mangle it along with everything made of meat on the inside.
@@josephledux8598 everyone uses reactive it's an add on
@@justarandomtechpriest1578 Well, the Russians have been crowing for years about how their advanced high-tech modern whiz-bang reactive armor makes their tanks as well as US and British tanks with highly complex laminated armor, and that's simply not true. Not even close to being true. Reactive armor works very well against some forms of projectile, primarily anything with a shaped-charge warhead because interrupting the formation of the penetrative explosive plasma jet ruins the ability to penetrate armor. The irony is that the Russian reactive armor WILL probably defeat the warhead of a Hellfire missile and believe me, that's nothing to sneeze at. But against kinetic penetrators like the depleted uranium projectiles the 120mm main gun on an Abrams uses, reactive armor is useless. And it's a hundred times useless if you're raining fifty or a hundred smaller DU penetrators on top of a tank from the GAU8 of a Warthog.
And no, "everybody" does not use reactive armor. You will see no reactive armor on an Abrams tank. As good as it is at defeating some kinds of projectile, its biggest disadvantage is that if it triggers any infantry standing within 20 yards is going to get blown apart. So note to self: Self, if serving as an infantryman in any army that uses reactive armor on its armored vehicles, the only two safe places for me are either inside the armored vehicle, or standing like 200 meters away from the damned thing.
Full-auto fire is the fastest way of converting money into smoke and grins known to man. Even at .22 prices, I doubt if I could afford to keep that device fed.

I remember being at a small indoor shooting range when I was a young kid(early 80’s). I thought I was hot stuff ripping rounds with my dad’s S&W 41. Till the guy 2 lanes over let loose with one of those. My dad and I just stoped and watched this guy. I had never seen a full auto shot in front of me at that time. And then I let loose with the 100’s of questions as an child under 10 fascinated with guns would do. Man, such a cool little gun.
This was the first gun I ever saw with a laser on it it was owned by the Houston Police Department. So very awesome to see one again

I read about a demonstration where the rep cut loose on a cement block. It just dissolved a hole in the thing. There was also the story of a prison guard who stopped a riot dead in its tracks by just painting the ringleader's chest with the laser sight.
