It's funny because some Japanese Nissan officials were also caught stealing funds just like Ghosn, however, they got no jail time and only had to apologize. In the video, you guys didn't mention the takeover attempt by Hari Nada. There is also the fact that Nissan's top lawyer, Ravinder Passi was fired and had his Tokyo house raided by the police after he reported to the Nissan board about some suspicious activity regarding Ghosn's case.
The Japanese should never allow foreigners to make Japanese cars. That was their fault to give that fugitive the reigns. Don't ever buy Japanese cars made by foreigners, period.
except they haven't touch any money. Ghosn seems to want to make nissan officials accomplice. so they cant talk to police. they knew this, and they all NEVER touched the money. they all "return" every penny through the police investigation.

As a Japanese, there are a couple more aspects I'd add.
In Japan, restructuring is considered more an open secret (as in "The less we talk about it, the better"), instead of just another unlucky event you have no control over and that you'll probably face as something you'd just have to accept like in most of Euro-Aust-America. Dismissal is notoriously difficult thanks to both cultural tradition (firing people is considered disgraceful and ruinous to people's faces (as in their honour/pride)) and the legal precedent deriving from the cultural basis. What is more often done is to progressively make people's work more menial/humiliating, or less lucrative to give the informal signal that they want to let you go - though a couple of recent lawsuits made this constitute as workplace harrassment.
The restructuring Ghosn did itself isn't all that unusual, I think, when other Japanese companies also have been restructuring as well since the 90s. If anything, I reckon the other corporations are more insidious as they kept the wages low, and were complicit with the powerless/useless labour unions to keep it that way.
Agreed with the lack of legal representation in the Japanese justice system. We had cases of justice miscarriages because of this, and one case even involved the prosecution agency tampering with evidence. Google "Atsuko Kimura" (the former bureaucrat for the Ministry of Labor and Health) for one example.
Sure, Ghosn might have been acting inappropriately in a few cases, but for one, there aren't many details or exact extent of misappropriation disclosed. And some that are disclosed, like family vacations or rent payments for homes are more like stipends for expats working overseas like my dad was previously paid with. Also, other Japanese corporations (I can think of at least Olympus back around 2010) also did shady accounting and worse hid massive losses from the public, and many of those executives got away with it, so I think there is selective corporate politics involved. There's also the questions of how complicit everyone else at Nissan was, and they also darn well should at least face some scruitny.
It was a move by Japanese govt to stop french takeover, and Ghosn was the casualty. But funnily, it will not matter. Both companies will be killed by the Tesla.
Anyone who starts off as, "I'm this race" isn't that race to begin with.

You forgot to mention that Saikawa had to quit the company for the same reason that Ghosn was arrested for. Also, Saikawa signed off on all compensation packages for Ghosn. And what happened to Saikawa, he apologized and all was honky dory with the police and Nissan. I have never been a fan of Ghosn but he was definitely railroaded here.

The Ghosn case is fascinating, because there are layers upon layers here.
It's probable that Ghosn was crooked. It's not uncommon for CEOs and other high level executives to have some shady dealings, and it's also not uncommon for everyone to look the other way until said CEO or high level executive becomes inconvenient. At the same time, the video only just scratches the surface of how wild the Japanese justice system is. That 99.4% conviction rate is the product of what critics call "hostage justice." If the police think you committed a crime, they'll just interrogate you until you confess. That 23 days is already absurdly long compared to much of the rest of the world, and they can find ways to keep resetting the clock for months on end. In the end, whether or not Ghosn was as crooked as he was made out to be, escaping in a box was probably the best possible outcome he could have hoped for.

I learned about Ghosn when I bought my G35 in 2006. The salesman was also from Brazil and loved the fact that he was in charge. I researched him then and agreed. He was great for the company, even though he killed the RB engine line😥 I had a R32 GTR until 2004.
That 99% rating is skewed too, because in japan, unless they can 1000% stick you with the charges/crime, they wont report. Hence the extremely high conviction rate.
@@southpineshooligan I was wrong in that statement. I read an article on the charges, and it said the conviction rate for similar investigations was just as high in places like Canada and France. I made a generalization w/o further evidence. Removed the comment.

Even if the charges against Carlos Ghosn are true I do not blame him for fleeing Japan, because it's justice system is so messed up.
Carlos Ghosn was held for weeks on end, in solitary confinement, and without access to a lawyer. Which is considered a violation of human rights.

As mentioned in the video, in Japan the police can detain you for over 20 days without charging you with any crime. In addition, in Japan almost everybody charged with a crime is found guilty whether or not they actually are, whereas in the US you have a much better chance of putting up a defense if you are innocent.
I'm not trying to argue that the US justice system does not need to be improved. I'm just trying to argue that it is much better than Japan's.
9:43 Important point regarding the Xtronic CVT: they weren't just bad, _they were defective._ Nissan settled a multi-billion dollar class-action lawsuit regardless those transmissions, and the terms _still_ didn't cover everyone affected.

A loooooooot of important parts were cut out.
Probably most important one - how Carlos established an alliance with Renault. And Japanese government (which has a huuuuuge control over major Japanese businesses) was against that alliance but still allowed it with some conditions to make sure that Nissan will stay Japanese. And Carlos was slowly making different schemes under the table that compromised those conditions. And some of those schemes were really big.
There were also other factors in this story.
But basically he angered Japanese part of Nisan's higher-ups and Japanese government. This was probably the most important part of the story - everything else was mostly used to have him sit in jail.
And also there is an afterstory about green berets that evacuated him - their homeland gave them up to Japanese government and they sat in Japanese jail for some time.
Carlos IS an excellent manager - like on a genius level. But basically, this is a story about a bunch of evil politicians and businessman (including him)

I was a Nissan guy till the 2000’s after I had 2 cars blow up 3 years apart, I switched to Toyota. 4Runner with 200k miles later and I’m happy. Quality over cost.
Yes. Nissan mid-2000’s and before, was higher quality. Then they started making junk, under Ghosn.
Fleet sales is what kept them afloat for so long.
My 06 G35 was a tank. In the 10 years that I owned it the only thing that went bad was my radiator fans. I even shipped it to Japan and back to the US, lol. Once debadged, most Japanese people didn't even know what it was. Being labeled a Skyline there, it didn't have a following. In the US it sold like gangbusters. It was such a great car. The CD009 transmission that came standard in the 350Z and G35 is a highly sought after transmission to swap into other cars. I'd say their reliability was fine as long as you stayed away from the Econobox's, lol.
After about 2010 yeah Nissan really started falling apart, the early 2000s had their share of issues but
I've driven one 3.5L Altima and now a G37 and both have cleared 180K miles of hard daily driving.
Yeah those nissan cvts are junk heard so may bad things about them my coworkers Sentra cvt recently went out and my aunts Altima is getting a warranty job done for the cvts
It's only in America where nissan gets a bad rep lol, nissan make one's of the most reliable vehicles like the navara, urvan, atlas, sunny and many more so stfu

Ghosn's work to turnaround Infiniti was also a very interesting story. Infiniti was on the verge of bankruptcy in the 90s and he blamed BMW for taking all the marketshare. So they set out to make sporty luxury cars, and in 03 when the G35 launched, it was Motortrend car of the year and was better than the BMW 330Ci in every area. It sold a ton and most Infiniti cars used the same parts. The FX35 was one of the first sport SUVs. Then they followed up with the hugely successful G37. Then the IPL. Then the 3.0t powered Qs. They were on a hot streak until he got arrested.
Ghosn gets a lot of undue credit for the revival of the Infiniti brand and Nissan, the FM platform, C-Platforms and VQ35 engines were already in development and truly ahead of their time and were locked in for production well before Ghosn joined the company. Not to say he didn't do anything, as he definitely keep the company afloat and massively reduce overhead which enabled Nissan to turn a profit but the auto industry.
Additionally automakers operate within 6-8 year life cycles (Redesigns) with most of the development pre-planned 2-3 years in advance of release. With 14-15 year life cycles or longer for major things like platforms and engines.
Nissan/Infiniti very much began around 2012 when their life-cycles started reaching their end
but no meaning full investments or updates were made across the entire brand (Infiniti in particular).
As Ghosn started to focus solely on chasing sales figures specifically Toyota, Its where massive cost cutting came into play with the CVT, Nissan dealers started offering unsustainable incentives and why many of Nissan's best selling vehicles saw few and only minor updates after that period.
The cheaper prices and insane leases kept things stable for a few years but Nissan continued to loose
revenue and sales numbers year after year, leaving the company exactly where it was in the late 90s
when Nissan took over.... That all happened under Ghosn's watch.
That said I will agree with you regarding the G35 and FX35, they were entries that really set the bar and put
the other Luxury automakers on the back foot. The development of the 3.0TT is one very bright spot
for Infiniti but sadly the Q50/Q60 are largely an exercise in cost cutting when you compare it to the G37.
@@BigHeadClan Interesting to hear, considering that the XVL concept (Infiniti G35 Sedan, or Nissan Skyline V35) was Infiniti's concept car and was unveiled at the 1999 Tokyo Auto Show. It was known to have the NEO DI VQ30DD direct-injection gasoline-fueled V6, so that was planned before Ghosn joined the company.
Ghosn intention was only to change the name and geared it towards the luxury sport market. Even the VQ engines have been in production since 1994. That's all I can gather, if I am wrong please correct me.
@@BigHeadClan Yes. Most of these things were still 90s Nissan developments and it shows. The turning around was a good thing and Ghosn really has talent in that almost unmachted! But the lack of engineering and everything cheap is/was the problem. Now with the Ariya and other models you can clearly see that the engineers can work more freely or how should I call that? I mean in the time with Ghosn they also did a good job but everything had to be toned down due to cutting costs and now sadly they´re years behind. In the 80s, 90s and a bit after that if was quite the opposite. They even had the X-Trail in 2003 to rent for taxi businesses with a fuel cell! And the Cima from 2003 could almost drive on it´s own on the highway. Unofficial I´d say it´s autonomous level 2 (?)!

I love this channel. This is the third time I have watched a video on Carlos Ghosn and even though I knew most of the information I was completely enveloped by the store telling. Keep up the good work Donut.
The choice for CVT wasn't really problematic as those can work perfectly fine. The choice for Jatco instead of Fuji was a problem, as was the choice to push the torque limits and manufacturing costs.
The very first generation of Jatco CVT was actually fine especially at least when used in the larger 3.5L engines (JATCO is also owned by Nissan hence their the manufacture over Fuji) it was when it got redesigned in 2011-2012 that they started having serious problems.
On their own they make a lot of sense, comparable fuel economy to a 7-8 speed transmission and 1/5th the manufacturing cost for Nissan, but JATCO transmissions are pretty reliable.

The more leaks that come out from Nissan show more and more it was a complete setup.
A company is nothing without having a good product to sell, Ghosn kept the lights on but Nissan turn around was the results of years of development going into the FM platform, VQ35 and C-Platforms.
It was the engineers and R&D teams that made that all happen.

I think you should've mentioned the Nissan lawyer who saw some discrepancies within Nissan related to Ghosn, and got harassed and booted off for it.
He also saw evidence that showed that even the other executives were more or less guilty of the same sifoning of money Ghosn did. Ghosn was just the target because of his desire to make Nissan less of a Japanese company.

Most likely Carlos was going some underhanded things that the Japanese executives knew about but were cool with as long as it was convenient for them. Also I'd like to add that I pre-ordered the buff horse ranch t shirt in black which is the only thing I've ever pre ordered in my life. It's one of the best designs ever.

Yes the 90s or in general 1991. From the March to the Z almost every model had a sporty version or was a sporty car!
They even had 2 (!) full size models (or 3 if you count the Q45 as a seperate model, yes even in Japan it was sold BESIDES the President) and 4 (or 3 Cedric/Gloria) executive models and much more!
American journalists asked him: "Didn't you expect it?"
Carlos answered: "Did you expect Pearl Harbor?"

Yo donut. This is really old news and while im glad you guys did an episode on it and i love your channel. Everyone and their mothers uncle knows about it, changing the thumbnail every day aint gonna change that.
He made so much money to Renault and Nissan. They had to let him stay even that they knew that he is stealing from them.
So this is one of the (minor) reason why 350Z sucked and aged poorly in comparison to any Nissan Z-car before the 350Z. Huge shame since the 350Z was one of car I set my sight on when I was a kid with the sleek exterior (mostly because it looks like a Porsche 911, which oddly enough was another car I set my sight on as a kid). Huge ouchie.
While true, if they didn’t do that and Nissan closed. We would never get any Z’s at all. Let alone the new Z.
The 350 z is going strong in the enthusiast market and used for a ton of race series. Get your head out of your ass.
Saying the 350Z sucked is a bold statement. Maybe in base format it was abit lackluster but just like HiLow showed it’s a great platform and the world fucking LOVED it. Moreover the 370z was better BECAUSE the 350 made so much money.
I mean, a fox body mustang is kinda doo doo in stock but people LOVE them because they’re a great PLATFORM to basically do whatever you want.
Also This guys financial choices are why we have an R35 GTR and people fucking go mad for those. I’d kill for one.
I had owned a 350z for 17 years. Over 255,000 miles, never had any drivetrain or transmission problems. Heck I never even replaced the original clutch. This idiot never owned a 350z, and most 350z owners can attest that reliability was not a concern at all. In fact, 350z is way more reliable than 300zx

I loved my 2014 Altima. Super efficient, and decent acceleration in its class thanks to the CVT. Great for fun and cross country trips. The tranny did go right at 200k, all things considered I think it was worth it!
My Altima is at 140k
Oof, I have a 2013 sitting in my driveway with 165k and I'm amazed it's made it that far on the original transmission. The car just doesn't feel like it was built to last past the warranty period. We had to replace both headlights because the inside of the projectors burned off and the projectors stopped projecting. Rattles everywhere and it feels like the motor mounts are giving out. It gets good mileage and handles well but I never liked it in general. So many places where the cost cutting is obvious. I'm glad it's not my car.
I don't know if yours had auto headlights, but the logic is hilarious. To make sure the headlights are never off when they should be on, they're just on all the time while the ignition is on and the switch is on auto. Developing logic is hard, apparently.
Not every single cvt is horrible but the vast majority are hot garbage
I had the same idea of how Nissan fell: they were too obsessive about high-performance market, neglecting their casual customers (which got easily taken by Toyota and Honda with their basic level cars).

Well the CEO of Nissan is back to its roots, Japanese, and it must remain that way, I hope Nissan bounces back. The new Z car looks promising, and they need to do a new GTR or R36. The new Pathfinder should have been more of an Off-road SUV like the 4Runner.
If I were Carlos Ghosn, I’d be super pissed that GM’s executives were still paid well above market and well above him being a CEO running two car companies. (Considering how bland GM had gotten, and still is)

People outside Japan often forget that this 99.4% conviction rate in Japan is mostly due to a culture of only bringing charges when the police/prosecutors are sure they can win a case, letting plenty of criminals run free.

That's not always the case, but that's what the Japanese government is always saying.
The main reason of the conviction rate is that most cases end up with a deal, because even if the police has no case, they will try to delay and make your life a living hell as much as posible, so people just break and admit to whatever they are being accused for.
The Japanese courts are said to be "conservative", because they usually side with the government in almost everything, and even in the few times they don't, they craft reasons as to why the government wasn't really wrong even when they were (For example, see the conclusion to the Sapporo Local Trial for Marriage Equality, in which the court admitted that according to the principle of equality under the law, gay people should be allowed to marry, but then they just walked back saying that it wasn't the position of the court to change the law, and that since this was something "new" there hasn't been enough time for the diet to discuss the matter, so in the end the case was dismissed).
Also, would recommend the movie "Sore demo boku wa yattenai" (I Just Didn't Do It) which shows exactly how the Japanese justice system works, how it relies on confessions, and that people who do not follow what are being told by prosecutors, will get harassed and made their lives a living hell (as opposed to "just admitting" and getting a relative lower sentence than the whole ordeal).

After seeing this it really does seem like Ghosn's greed caught up with him since evidence of his crimes was found in other countries outside of Japan as well. Not to mention having shell companies and trying to get your cousin accomplice on the company board only adds to the level of questionable actions taken by Ghosn. I can see the Nissan executives weighing the risks and conspiring to expose Ghosn as an attempt to save the company's face.

also, if he was innocent, he wouldn't be hiding out in lebanon, where i believe he can't be extradited to face justice in other countries as lebanon doesn't have extradition treaties with other countries. not just justice in japan but also france and the USA.
Carlos was not always successful as he is made out to be in the press..When Nissan entered India they relaunched the Datsun brand for compact cars to compete with Market Leader fellow Japanese brand Suzuki..
Datsun failed miserably..Suzuki beat Carlos's Datsun strategy big time..

Great documentary James, reminds of fresher content similar to the "Greed" series made in America. Funny enough, I owned and drove a Sentra 1.8S for a few years and while I maintained it regularly and pushed that engine limiter into Red often, the car surprisingly did not produce any issues before passing the good ride to another owner. At this point, I am positively not looking into Nissan as my next pedal...including Honda or Ford's portfolios 👋😬
There's a lot missing from this video. The Japanese charges were false because many of the things he was accused of were known and approved by Nissan before he was arrested and charged then held without trial or bail for months. The real reason why he was to be ousted was because the Japanese govt. and nissan didn't want to get merged with renault permanently so they made up charges against him.

This shit was nuts in so many ways, but there was some good that came out of it: it finally put Japan's fucked up "justice" system in the spotlight, something that's been long known to residents (like myself) but conveniently kept quietly hidden under the sakura-colored carpet. It was so unsurprising how he was treated and I was not shocked that he decided to GTFO. And as expected, they are screwing over Greg Kelly as 見せしめ.

Why are Nissan's now French cars, we need the Silvia s16, a new Skyline GTR, and the Sentra R Turbo, you guys were on top with Toyota, Mazda, and Honda, and now are just making rebadged Renults, ive Only seen the Nissian Frontier last cause i think those are made purely by Nissan, the R35 is still one the best track cars ive ever seen, the design its from 2012 and its still able to beat modern super cars, Nissian can be great you just gotta get away from Renult, im ecited for the new Generation of cars including the 400z, if you guy need to sell out, dont go to Renult, please please go to any other Japanese comapny

I have an 03 G35 Sedan, which is actually a 90s production car (Concept car unveiled at the Tokyo Auto Show in 1999) and its very reliable, yes rust buckets but exceptionally reliable.
I think what Mazda is doing is smart, joining Toyota for I guess building cars because they were married to Ford for years and now without them they have been making much better cars.

While I have no idea about his "crimes" nor do I care whether he is guilty or innocent, a few accusations just do not make sense to me, especially when Nissan didn't disclose exact amounts or details. Some of those items are "typical" ex-pat / CEO packages (e.g., family vacation, housing) - and Japanese locals really didn't understand why all these ex-pats are getting these "luxurious" benefits (e.g., even mid-level managers can get personal travel / "home leave" budget of $50,000 or so a year, USD$10-20,000 a month for rent, max of $100,000 for kids' international school tuition, and this was in the 90's). I would not be at all surprised if Ghosn had a personal travel / rent stipend exceeding $1mil a year as part of his CEO / ex-pat contract - again, this is unfathomable in Japanese standards / culture.
My family from Japan had all of the ex-pat perks too when we lived in San Francisco. So some of Ghosn's "crimes" in themselves are not all that unusual - except for the price tags.
