Repairing damaged shear bolt hole on big baler flywheel.

- In this video I have a big flywheel from a Massey Ferguson baler in for repair.
The hole where the shear bolt bush goes had gotten damaged due to the incorrect shear bolt being used. Because the hole is damaged there is nothing to support the bushing anymore resulting in the bush cracking.
Nice simple repair. I knocked the old bush out and placed the flywheel onto the new Huron milling machine.
To fasten the flywheel down I had to cut some new plates out on the cnc plasma table, I used the gas torch instead to ensure the slots didn’t have a taper.
Once the flywheel was secured, I used an edge finder that fit snuggly into the shear bolt hole to align the milling machine. I then switch over to a drill, drilled the hole out and finished with a reamer to get a nice accurate hole.
To sleave the hole to get back to original size I made one on the lathe. This had to be made with an interference fit on the OD and the ID and needed a shoulder in one end for the flange on the bush. Once made, I applied bearing set to the sleave and knocked it in with the copper hammer. To ensure the sleave wouldn’t be knocked out if the bush needs to be replaced, I drilled and tapped another little hole for a grub screw to hold the sleave in.
After removing the flywheel from the mill, I gave the hole a quick polish with the sanding wheel and then knocked in the new bush.
Hope you enjoyed the video.

When I was studying machining one of the first things I learned, and by that I mean one of the first things that really stuck with me was a repair I had to make on a part I screwed up. I am so thankful to the machinist I studied under.
He took the time to explain all the different options to repair my work and save my term. Very similar repair and I always kept that technique in my bag of tricks. (I used an oversized fine threaded bush, loctite in place).
I’m retired now, and enjoy watching you grow your shop. I hope you are keeping good books so that you can continue to grow your business, which is a huge benefit to all your customers. Charge enough for all the small repairs so you can continue to invest in new machines, and take on all types of work that local folks need.
Coffee and Olly perfect Sunday morning
These little jobs are always more involved and time consuming than anyone imagines. Should be out sieving soil but instead I’m watching utube with tea and toast on the go ☺️
The soil will still be there later. Leaving plenty of time to watch this. 👍
That new milling machine just makes me think of Starbug from Red Dwarf every time I see it!!
I like to see how you problem solve your jobs Oliver. Thinking outside of the box to come up with solutions and work arounds. A great job again. thanks for posting the video.
Engineering at its best, Thinking Outside of the Box, a Good Trait.
🇨🇦
That was great, most enjoyable. From showing us the flywheel on the baler, then you making the fasteners and the bush thingy.. and you doing the repair, doing it all exactly right and turning out great at the end. Excellent video Oliver!
Thank Sunday it's Snowball. It is always a pleasure to start the day with a weekly dose of agricultural engineering. Fabulous video and flywheel repair Olly
"Shear pin's gone again !"
"Oh bugger, what have we got that will fit in the hole....?"😂
I think I've heard that before! Lol.
The Huron looks like a helpful beetle peering into the flywheel with you!
Ollie’s quenching bath, puddle outside the workshop 😊. Great posting the diagram of the bailer. Take care stay safe.
Enjoyed that!
There is a guy in Canada "Josh Topper" who uses that green stuff. He was sent a bottle to try about 3 or 4 months ago, now uses it all the time only has good words to say about it.
Topper Machine I think is his channel, if we are talking the same chap?
Josh Topper is in Spooner, Wisconsin, USA. Lots of machinests channels seem to be using "The Green Stuff," I assume that there has been a marketing campaign by Anchor Lube and there are a lot of free samples being sent around.
Your drill press looks like a preying mantis. Lovely post. Thanks.
Kurtis backing the job out the workshop at the end!! 😅👍
Absolutely use the most rigid machine you have.
You don’t want to muck up a 500kg fly wheel.
You did a nice job!
Interesting how the spindle creeps a little bit.
Maybe a sticky clutch that is going to be worth a dedicated video. 🤠
Nice job Oliver, should be another satisfied customer.
Beautiful explained, perfectly executed!
Thanks.
That bit at the end where you were saying it looked like an alien and then put on the screen that it was the mill and not you, made me laugh.
Sunday used to be just another day, until I found Ollie's channel, now it's the best day of the week. Am really glad you like your new mill, I can see why someone thinks it looks like something from out of space, if you watch an episode of space 1999 I think you'll see what they mean. Getting the computer bit fixed, will make it even more useful than it is now. 👍
You cracked me up. Once when you stood there a moment scratching you head after loading the flywheel on the mill and again when you commented "I like this mill already. I can reach the drawbar bolt." Great video. Thank you
Awesome video, great work. Thank you Oliver
Looking at your mill I can see now where the red dwarf production team got inspiration for starbug😂
Sunday morning coffee and Snowball Engineering 😊. Great save on what looks like a very expensive part
A good one! Young lad! Keep up the good work! 👌👍
Good to see the new mill in use ! thanks for sharing your work. Brian from South Yorkshire
Putting the new machine straight to work! Love it. The variety on the channel is growing. #sundaymorningsnowball lol
Nice fix! Thanks for the view! Always enjoy.
Thanks for tye video. Using the new machine in the new layout - must be a pleasing feeling.
Nice job. That tractor next to the mill is definitely the elephant in the room.
Should place it in a shed till you get time to work on it. You definitely need the space you got for jobs.
At least the new mill shows how useful it’s turned out to be onwards and upwards olly🇬🇧🇮🇪.
Top work, Mr. Oliver, that was quite a lump of iron!
Thanks for another great video. Yes, simple jobs are never as simple as folks think. Have a great week!
Nice machine you have. I have only one piece of advice when working with machine tools...keep your fingers away from that spindle until it stops completely. Take care.
The new (to you) mill proved to be very useful for this job. Good timing that you just got it set up in time.
Shout on the anchor lube! Jumped on eBay right away and ordered some. Cheers Olly
Best way start to a Sunday morning! Nicely done Olly! The Huron will be a real plus for your operation!
Great job as always, Mr Snowball! Thanks!
Thanks for the little video to explain where the flywheel lives
Great job mate love the new machine 😊
hey Oliver thanks for the videos. love watching your content. keep them coming..... BTW when i see you cleaning up small parts you have either plasma or flamed out, it reminds me of a chuck i just got for quickness. - Eclipse Magnetic Base Chuck 10" X 5" Type AX 105 i managed to bag one from ebay delivered for £82, omg i wish i got one a long time ago. so much quicker then using a normal handle vice..
Great way to start my Sunday 😊
Nicely done, Oliver ✔️ 👍🏻👌🏻👍🏻
Good job well done! At least they have improved flywheel protection at last. As a side, I love your own repostes to comments about "aliens", cheers Ollie.
The Huron will be a useful piece of kit. We used to turn flywheels on our Webster and Bennett 48" vertical borer. The Huron is a good height, no steps to reach the top. Good job 👍
Great content mate. Use an old CO2 fire extinguisher to shrink your sleeve. Works a treat -70 degrees 😊
Great work again.
Good to see the Huron earning its keep right off the bat!!👍
You quickly got the hang of that mill, nice fix ....
Love that mill!
Hello Oliver from the USA. Excellent fix for farm machinery. Short and sweet even thought there is thought into the fix.
Brilliant job!👍👍
Reamers like slow speeds and lots of oil, not coolant heavy oil... Love the vids
Thanks for another great video Ollie, love that new machine can’t wait for more . 👍
Clever stuff there mate
I just loved the agricultural "green" quench!
Nice to see the new mill handy for your height 😜 I was laughing when you were working under and the head looking down. The old Radial arm looked sad 😔
Surely there are some red dwarf fans out there? I’m reckon lister, rimmer, kryten and the cat would recognise that milling machine!
Looking a bit like starbug
Great job on the flywheel bushing. It’s so nice to make tools as you need them, I imagine.
coffee and snow on CZcams.... top work Snow 👍👍👍👍👍
Nice one there simple but involved when you take all the steps involved just one thing with the Anchorlube it will leave stains on the mill table and cutters if you don't get it all off but seems a lot using it now as it seems to work well Cheers mate nice job
Great work young man!
New mill is spot on! A good buy for sure,
Very enjoyable. I was hooked from the start.
Been looking forward to seeing your video come on line, Another awesome video young Oliver,
Awesome job,
From kiwi land
Very enjoyable video oliver
Another nice save for the owner, the new Mill is going to be handy for sure!
Nice to see how you such great work! Thanks for sharing
Great video as always
Excellent work as usual Oliver!
Nice to see that new milling machine in use perfect job for that awesome job thks ..
Sunday is complete already ❤
Good jobe Oliver, interesting repair
Great job.
I like your shop !
Oliver. Axis mnemonic, remember.
X is "a cross" , across
Y "Why " "are you running away from me"?
Z "goes to bed" 'zzzz'.
Brilliant vid again top man hope you're well 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Another high caliber job done keep them coming
Great little job done well on the new mill - happy days 👍
Good moring, Oliver!
My Mrs looked over my shoulder and described the new mill as an "Angry Ant" 🤣
Nice repair
Interesting video and to see your new machine put to work.
Excellent, as always. Would you show how to sharpen a drill bit in one of your videos? I have several that are dull and would rather sharpen them than replace them. Thanks in advance.
Excellent Job.
Nice job . that will hold up well.
Love the northern coolant to cool the freshly cut clamps
Well done Olly , top job as always . Good explanation on what everything does and why
Hi Oliver, nicely done using the new mill for that big lump of iron, earning it's keep already, cheers mate, stay safe, best wishe's to you and your's, Stuart UK.
Watching all your videos I'm guessing that Kutavar has been a game changer.
Thank you for sharing, another great project, i learn a lot 👍👍👍👍
Really nice mill. While Anchor Lube has replaced several cutting fluids in my shop, I’ve never liked the squeeze bottle due to a similar experience. Keith Rucker seems to have found it in a jar, but no luck finding this myself. Good video mate 👍🏻
good show. thanks to you.
That is 1 cool machine!
Great video.
Bom trabalho amigo!!!
thanks for sharing, nice to see your channels growing....😉
Another great video.
Cheers from the states! 🇬🇧🇺🇸
Ex loctite guy here put your adhesive on both parts to prevent (possible total) wipe off during insertion, tighter the fit the thinner the grade, rough surface better than polished.
Retaining compound best stuff by country mile for bushes But it’s almost 40+ years since my job there (great days, great products)my memory of the best grade number to recommend is possibly flawed however, I think 601 is it, first number is strength, last numbers indicate viscosity. 01 is the thinnest, this to suit your almost zero gap. If memory serves 601 is almost pure anaerobic material with no viscosity additives to fill gaps thus reducing strength.
Many of your contemporaries use and swear by Anchorlube, on fire welding used it all the time and Josh Topper raves about it.
Awesome 😎
You could put the bushing or bearing ether in the fridge or liquid nitrogen and drops right in or right on easy peezy 😊
Hey, Ollie, you should sell that' sound made from your forklift to video game programmers- manufacturing companies? HaHa
