  • Have you ever wanted more privacy in your backyard? Looking for a way to enhance your outdoor living space with something beautiful and functional? Check out how I built this privacy trellis! This project made a huge improvement to the back yard...turning a boring old back patio into a fantastic outdoor living space! With this trellis acting as a privacy screen, suddenly the back porch becomes a great place to hang out, entertain, enjoy a meal, get lost in a book, or sit and watch the stars.

    Two possible suggestion: To keep the 4x4 from rotting use a 6" diameter concrete tube form, fill it to ground level or below, and anchor it to a steel 4x4 post base. Instead of overlapping the horizontal and vertical lattice, join the wood so it can be flush. Thanks again. peace

    Ha! Were they planning to take down the fence? Just out of curiosity, it seems like they have plenty of privacy already? Thanks for the demo! I'm getting ready to do something like this. We don't have a fence, and we were thinking of a pergola and one of those pull down shades, but we aren't looking for more overhead shade in our yard, just some privacy for enjoying a meal on the deck. I didn't know if this 'wall' was a 'thing' or not. My initial design thought looked a lot like what you've made here, so I'm thinking I must have seen something like it somewhere. Anyway, great video! Lots of helpful tips!

    I wonder why you didn't seal the structure before erecting it? Handsome final product. From my own experience, I find that concrete is unnecessary and will make rot under the soil line more likely. Crushed gravel mixed with sand can hold the posts without allowing water to collect.

    • @AmplifyDIY
      @AmplifyDIY  Před rokem

      Hi Christina - Sealing post-install was due mostly to timeline constraints... we were trying to get it installed for a birthday present, and simply ran out of time. It would be easier/more effective to seal it before erecting, for sure. Thanks for the tip on the concrete, and for watching!

    • @AmplifyDIY
      @AmplifyDIY  Před 2 lety +2

      Hi GG - you bring up a great point! Lumber prices fluctuate wildly, so nailing down an approximate cost would be difficult. As I recall, this cost right around $1000 USD in materials, including the lumber, stain, hardware, concrete, rental of the post hole digger, etc. The lumber portion of that was around $700, but that was last year before lumber prices really skyrocketed. Today the lumber would likely be roughly double that - though I have not checked on the cost of cedar in my area lately.
      As for time: as I recall I completed the entire project over the course of 4 days. It could be done much more quickly, but filming always at least doubles the time any project takes to complete.

      @AmplifyDIY  Před 3 lety

      Hi Isaac! It's placed on the southern edge of the porch, and we are far enough north that the sun is nearly always in the southern side of the sky. They wanted it mostly for the early evenings, when it would cast a long shadow across the porch... which it did very well. As for seeing through the slats: They planted vines below it, which quickly grew up the slats and formed a nearly solid wall of lush greenery.
      Like you, this is probably not what I would have built for myself, but this is what they wanted, and it works great for them.

    • @AmplifyDIY
      @AmplifyDIY  Před rokem

      In general, putting wood into concrete is not a great idea for many kinds of woods... cedar, however, is one of the species that I'm more comfortable with setting into concrete. It resists rot better, and also and bug infestation. Additionally, I coated the bottoms of the posts before setting them in concrete, to provide an extra layer of protection.
      So far, this trellis has been holding up great!

    IS NECESSARY TO ALSO HAVE CEMENT FOUNDATION OR CAN IT BE DONE WITH WOOD?

    • @AmplifyDIY
      @AmplifyDIY  Před 4 lety +2

      Hi there - Cost will vary a lot based on the materials you choose. I built this out of solid cedar, which is not very cheap at all. Pressure treated lumber or plain pine (with a stain/seal to protect against elements) would have been *significantly* cheaper. Using cement as I demonstrate in this video is really the best option if you are using cedar, redwood, or pressure-treated wood. If you are using plain dimensional pine, I would recommend pouring concrete footers but attaching the wood to it using a bracket such as this: amzn.to/3jBxF15
      3 adults should have no problem building and installing something like you describe. Good luck!

      Hi Bill! Open the design in tinker cad and then use the ruler tool to get the dimensions you need. The tinkercad project literally is the plan. I’m happy to try to answer any other questions you have. Good luck!

      Still having a little trouble. Dimensions I need are: distance from top of vertical post to top of pin boards, distance from top of vertical post to header board

    • @AmplifyDIY
      @AmplifyDIY  Před 3 lety

      I’m happy to help. From the top of the vertical post to the top of the pin boards is 14.2”, and from the top of the vertical post to the pinboard header is 8.7”. Shoot me an email at amplifydiy@gmail.com and I’ll be glad to record a quick screencast showing you how to take those measurements. Thanks!

      Great thankyou. Have been purchasing lumber for the project. I had to visit 3 yards to fill my order. Can't find cedar in lengths needed for vertical posts and top cross beam so I'm going with pressure treated for those 3 pieces the pt is in short supply too. Looking forward to starting the project thanks for the help!

      Hi Taiter - this is usually referred to as a "trellis" or "privacy wall". There are lots of kits, plans, and pre-made ones available if you just bang around on google a bit. Good luck!

    Building a trellis for privacy and shade? :55 Shot of the entire area before the project shows a privacy fence and a completely shaded patio. What was the purpose of this trellis? I realize it’s their property and they can do what they want, but it’s just weird that they want something they already have.

      Nosy neighbor liked to look over fence. This trellis solved that.

      Hi aalva - it depends on where/how you are watching the video. Generally it is somewhere below the video itself. Sometimes you have to click something to expand it. Sometimes you have to scroll all the way down past comment land to find it.

    How nice to have an uncle to help. My uncles all they do is do for themselves, while my mom's house is falling apart right in front of thier eyes, as they live next door like about 200ft away from my mom's house, they live in what used to be my grandmother's house, she's passed from lukemia and 3yrs later my mom passed from 2nd hand smoke lung cancer. I've been trying to keep up with my mom's house but my part time job doesn't help at all, sadly the house is falling apart, and the roof leaks as well. My only brother refuses to help as he lives in an RV behind my mom's house. It's so sad that nobody cares to help with home repairs because me and my daughter and her two kids live in my mom's house. Well like I said God blessed you with a loving family 💕🌹 all I can do is sadly just dream...
