These aren't my favorite Abercrombie books, but all my favorite quotes come from them.
"What is the world coming to when an honest man cannot burn corpses without suspicion?"

@@WriterBren not sure if you've read any other Abercrombie before, but the man is a quote machine. All his best characters speak and think with a folksy, homespun nihilism that I can't get enough of.

This is very exciting for me because Half a King is the only Joe Abercrombie book I've ever read. I brought it years ago when I wasn't too into fantasy and had no idea who the author was. If this is supposed to be his most forgotten-about book, I can't wait to read the others! The only downside is that my copy of Half a King has a dull cover.

    SPOILERS!
so merphy I want to talk about my favourite thing but before that I should mention something I don't know if you realized or not, but this world is post apocalyptic. all of it actually happens in our world in scandinavia many centuries in the future where people started developing from the scratch and also there's NO magic in the books. when I finished the trilogy and thought about it I was shocked that I just read fantasy series without any magic in it.
so my favourite part is about firearms. the way joe describes shooting from gun in second and third books is truly genius. He does it SO realistically that I actually thought it was magic at first and only later realized what it actually was. he perfectly catches how medieval writer would describe shooting from a gun he just saw. I think this detail alone is peak of his writing

Glad to see some light shined on this series! I read these 2 years ago and really enjoyed them. Like you, I feel they don't touch his other works, but they're still worth your time. I especially loved Half the World and Thorn's character. But I loved how at the end of the series, when Yarvi's compete character arc is realized, Abercrombie reminds you that despite this being a more plot-oriented type of storytelling, that this is still a book by Joe Abercrombie!

As soon as I saw this title, I wondered if this was the Half A series. The first 2 of these books are the only books of Joe Abercrombie's that I've read so far, and as someone who's been fairly out of the reading world for a bit and recently coming back by way of your channel and a few others, I've been continuously surprised by the fact that The First Law overshadows these books to the point where the discourse about his work seems to imply this trilogy doesn't exist.
Which has me very intrigued to pick up The First Law once I get through my current backlog of books I own but haven't read.

Murph first of all greetings from Argetina! I have read almost all of Joe's works, my first contact with him was through a friend who recommended the first law to me. But in Argentina they are difficult to find, so my first reading by Joe was the trilogy corresponding to half a king. The reality is that it is not a saga oriented to the Viking world, in fact they are books designed for a younger audience. Anyway, the saga is very good, I admit that the last book is the one I liked the least, but it's still Joe... I hope you enjoy them and thank you for your content!

I feel like I should give Joe Abercrombie a try, I am not huge fantasy at least in literature. I think out of the handful I have read I didn't even make it fifty pages into the wheel of time before I stalled and was bored by time I finished the fellowship of the rings, I loved the Potter books at one point, had a false start attempt at Game of Thrones and loved but did not finish the dark tower. Also I kind of like the Conan stories.
Just like I was sure there were French movies I would like and was proven right I am sure there are Fantasy novels out there that I would like.

I really enjoyed all 3, but only 1 stands out as a must read, and you can read it as a stand alone. My problems with the sequels is that I just didn't understand what they were attempting thematically, whereas the first book felt complete and seemed to have a strong clear message. Also the 2nd and 3rd books got very "adult". I wanted a book i could share with my kids, when they reach a reading level they can enjoy it. I won't let my kids read the last two but id let them read the first. The first book has violence but not sex
the second and third books have everything. just a heads up for parents
