Lest we forget, Feige hired Chloé Zhao to direct Eternals in 2021, who herself had just come off a Best Director Oscar for Nomadland (2020). And on paper, she seemed like an ideal choice to direct a Marvel movie that was introducing a cast of a dozen or so new characters into the MCU. And the results were…mixed.
But the sad fact is that, while Shang Chi is regularly mentioned with affection and anticipation of a sequel, it seems like everyone has forgotten about Eternals.
Eternals is the best comic book movie I've seen.
Not forgetting that the Russo Brothers were executive producers of Everything Everywhere All At Once.
On that basis, I suspect they'll shift their focus on producing more original, independent stories. Building from the ground up will grant them creative control and a higher budget.
In my opinion it would be interesting if the Daniels worked with Kevin as consultants/advisors for the multiverse saga. The Daniels can help with tightening up the story, any ideas, concepts, or narratives that would ‘cause disruption. Of course the Daniels wouldn’t participate in every single writers room for every single script for every single show and movie however, they can provide quality control, and some checks and balances. Keep the saga grounded
I can see them doing a DC film with James Gunn, but not in the MCU
I don’t think they would do it anyway. They’re fantastic with original stories, and is more their speed.
The guy who wrote Loki & Doc Strange 2 is writing Secret Wars. The guy who directed Shang Chi is directing it. Ant-Man 3 writer Jeff is doing Kang Dynasty & the rumor is Coogler is directing. I think Jeff’s writing for Ant-Man was a little lackluster BUT I did enjoy Kang in that movie so hopefully he tightens up his scripts reads some comics and comes back with some heat.🤞🏽& Coogler would be fire directing Jonathan Majors!
If I remember correctly, I believe the Daniels were offered Loki, but they turned it down to do EEAAO.
After looking at the comments I did the Google sure enough they have a 5 year deal with Universal.
Look at what they did to Ryan coogler and Sam rami. Took their styles and watered it down
Yeah you can tell there were to many cooks in the kitchen with those films
Case in point: Nomadland director Chloe Zhao won best director and best picture... Tapped to direct eternals... While it was a modestly good film, it struggled at the box office
James Cameron made a lot of money with his original visions. If Marvel did this wouldn't it be similar to when they got Chloe Zhao for Eternals
They got Chloe Zhao BEFORE she won her oscars
I believe the chances are slim. These guys are as visionary as it gets, and the MCU is very particular about not letting visionaries make its movies. Kwan/Scheinert are on the Edgar Wright wavelength, where they’re too singular in their style to match the existing MCU.
Disney needs to stop taking amazing creative talent and making them conform to their formulaic film making. The Daniels need to go the same way as Robert Eggers and Ari Aster and keep making the stuff they want to make.
Thank goodness Tarintino didn’t make his debut on the scene now or Disney would be like ohh I bet we could use his name to sell our stale product.
Didn’t they didn’t turn down MCU to make EEOAO?
Errrr didn’t Kevin Feige already asked them before and they turned him down.
And they are currently under contract by Universal.
They have a first look deal with Universal, so in theory, they can work for Marvel since it's not an IP they made
I agree it's likely Coogler. Feige is likely going to want someone who's played in the MCU before for an Avengers film.
Did we forget what happened when Chloe Zao directed a Marvel movie?
“Everything Everywhere All At Once”👁️ is what “Doctor Strange (Is Not) In The Multiverse Of Madness” should’ve been.
A24’s profile also went up considerably.
They won’t be able to take a creative breath under marvel.
They used to work for Marvel in some capacity before I think.. I don't think they will. Also they would be partially creatively beholden by whatever Kang Dynasty sets up.. My prediction for a Secret Wars directors either Ryan Coogler or Sam Raimi.
Coogler is currently Marvel’s best writer/director, so it only makes sense that he’d write and/or direct Secret Wars or another huge Marvel project.
I think they would be a perfect fit for the kinds of stories Marvel is telling recently. EEAAO has a similar brilliant wackiness that is very prominent in WandaVision and some other phase 4 projects. Also, there is a lot of major similarities between EEAAO and many episodes of the sitcom Community, which the Russo Brothers were famous for directing.
Wow! Second question selected for a live show topic :) ! Appreciate your response and all the work you do!
EEAAO just offered so much creativity that corporate MCU could never.
I think they'll end up at Netflix, Apple or Amazon to be honest because they'll have $$$ and Freedom.
It's the writer who wrote Multiverse of Madness going to write Secret Wars.
I'd say this: if MCU don't change writers, then Avengers Secret Wars will be the second Avengers film that won't get a billion boxoffice. The first will be the Kang Dynasty.
They could make a good movie no doubt, but it's not guaranteed since they have to work within the parameters of the pre-established MCU and can't do something completely original like Everything Everywhere was.
The trick to writing a good multiverse story is just writing a good story. Current MCU writers don't have either the talent or the care, it seems.
Fun fact Russo brothers were producers on this film
Love the Daniels but I feel like Marvel would hold them back and water their creativity down. Ala Edgar Wright.
"I wanted to make a Marvel movie but they didn't seem to want to make an Edgar Wright movie," is what he said, if I can recall.
I would love to see them do a marvel movie but I would be happier if they get to do whatever they want. There movies are so funny and have a lot of heart. I really enjoyed Swiss army man.
Get rid of these Rick and morty writers please
As a Massachusetts native, we are proud for our boy Daniel Kwan!
James Gunn is going to poach these guys
That would be better. I can see them doing Booster Gold
Well if they were to do that they would be taking their careers in the complete opposite direction after winning a Oscar
They have a 5 year first look deal with Universal. Let’s hope they aren’t swallowed by the Hollywood IP system. EEAAO wasn’t a success because it was a “multiverse” movie. It’s a well executed family drama with sci fi elements. If it had a bigger budget it wouldn’t be what it was.
Do your research for your show.
I think Ryan Coogler would be a good choice for Secret Wars. He can balance drama and comedy well and can handle big ensemble casts with big action set pieces.
Please no. These guys are creative and talented, Disney would just make them make another generic marvel movie.
Boo boo ho oid man cry about marvel bad.
Exactly.
@@eldeadkilljohnkennedy3946 the real boo hoo is the declining marvel box office
Only fear is the “Chloé Zhao Effect”.
I rather the Daniels do an original superhero from scratch. One that's not connected to DC or Marvel or anything else, but something out of their own heads.
X-Men directed by The Daniels. They don’t need to continue with the multiverse. They should do a movie about acceptance.
Marvels problem right now isn’t necessarily their writers. It’s their production schedule. Trying to have those writers create a cohesive movie, while also trying to stay in line with 14 other projects, while ALSO having to deal with last minute rewrites and reshoots, and being given less than a year to deal with all of that… it’s super problematic
This is not going to happen probably. Then have turned down Marvel once already on directing Loki since they were shooting EEAAO at the same time. And they did not like the idea of playing in someone else's sandbox. Also, for the next 5 years, Universal has the exclusive deal with them.
The Daniels should refrain from working with Marvel/Disney due to their micro management of directors. These guys deserve to go to a studio that will embrace their original ideas and not become a deterrent throughout the movie making process. We have seen how that played out with the Chloe, Scott Derickson, Sam Raimi and Edgar Davids. A24 is still the best option for them at the moment and Universal/ Blumhouse.
A good storyteller is a good storyteller...but I feel like the MCU needs some more experienced writers and directors to come get the franchise back on its feet again.
If thats the case they wouldn’t hire Rick and Morty writers in the first place
I think they would be just fine with a career like the Russos considering they produced and helped get EEAAO made. So many fans think it’s a binary thing: MCU/blockbuster movies or indie cinema and never the two shall meet. Storytellers are storytellers and each director has to calculate what is best for them and what they want to make. Turning down Loki season 1 was the best thing for the Daniels because they got to make Everything Everywhere All At Once. After that who knows?
They made a deal with Universal for film. And an A24/Showtime TV deal.
For they own good I hope they stay independent. We don't have many opportunities to hear creative voices that loud these days.
How quickly they forgot Oscar winner Chloe Zhao. Didn't even mention her once but more relevant to the discussion then the ones they did
The Daniels style fit more styles of comicbook movies than the contemplative style of Zhao
Even with the concept of the multiverse playing in, an Avengers movie boils down to two to three hours of people hitting each other real hard and EEAaO was more of a character study. I think if they had a pass of the Multiverse of Madness script it would've been the best outcome for how they could benefit the MCU, because that movie tried to tell a character driven story across multiple universes, but a mainline Avengers movie has too many moving parts for that.
I have no doubt the script Lovness wrote for Quantumania was far better than what we go on screen. The ammount of last minute changes and future connectivity taking precident over the current story is what killed AM3. If it were a terrible script, you think Kevin would have let it go into production? Na, it was great and they mucked it up with the changes and terrible editing.
Let the Russo brothers do it, it shows because what they was able to do with Captain America and civil war, and I would let the Russo brothers in the Daniels brothers co-wrote avengers versus X-Men mutant registry act
I Just know the Rick and Morty writers need to go on both Avengers projects
Just because they wrote two movies you didn't like doesn't mean they can't do something better. I really liked the Marvel projects that they worked on personally.
I got very scared for a second, but I imagine these guys have enough dignity to not get involved with Marvel.
Didn't Disney/Marvel do something similar when Feige hired Chloe Zao to direct Eternals?
Daniels have a 5-movie deal with Universal so they’re not working with Marvel any time soon
I love how everyone in the comments is suddenly an expert on the inner workings of how Marvel Studios operates and works with talent? As if they have been a fly on the wall witnessing the “degradation of pure cinema” first hand!? Lmao!🤣
Agreed most definitely lmao 😂,.
But there is an actual degradation in the MCU. Phase4 was frustratingly mediocre even for die hard fans
@@afnd4603 Those are personal valid opinions based on watching movies, not people acting like they know the inner workings of a studio they have never set foot in. Also Im a die hard fan and I like phase 4 more than phase 1, but that’s irrelevant.
@@afnd4603 Phase 4 is better than phases 1-3.
@@langleymneely
I enjoyed phase four as well. For the most part. Solid phase.
I think their campy, explosive directing would work well for Secret Wars, but how restricted would they be? I love their style but I feel like Kevin would tone it down.
He no tone it down.
They signed a 5 year deal with Universal so...
I. Want. The. RUSSOS.
PLEASE NO! LET THEM MAKE ORIGINAL STORIES FOR US TO ENJOY, DON'T RUIN THE DANIELS
Interesting speech after their win , 😮
A lot of people complain about the comedic elements in the MCU and everything everywhere all at once is heavily based in that. Unless you want the most divisive MCU movie ever made than should probably get someone else to do it.
@@derpypride Great video essay but it doesn't have anything to do with my point.
Good point about directors wary of Star Wars and Marvel because the fans will so easily turn on them. Similar situation with Rings of Power, nobody wanted to showrun that, so Amazon got these no-name guys, and it sucked.
If I’m a top director I’m working with A24! A24 studio makes every other studio look like chumps! No one makes better movies then them right now
@@realjohnlove The films are authentic not "artsy".
It depends on how closely Kang Dynasty connects to Secret Wars. If Avengers 5 and 6 connect close, like Infinity War and Endgame, I would rather the writers and directors of Kang Dynasty do Secret Wars as well. If the two connects loosely like the first two Avengers film, I could see EEAAO creators make Secret Wars.
In a recent Variety podcast with them they said they have a deal with A24 for a TV series they are doing and a few other things at another studio. But why can't they do both? They are going to be busy either way
I think it would be a bad move for them, I'd prefer to see them do more original films. What happened with Chloé Zhao? I'm not really sure if The Eternals helped her career after the reception it got.
She’s still working on Eternals 2!
Eternals is better than any Batman movie.
@@bobbobson3826 I actually liked Eternals but the general reception was mixed when it came out. I didn't mention Batman.
I, for one, can’t wait for Lucasfilm to take them on and to learn all about their Star Wars film that won’t get made.
I’m surprised no one at the end brought of the Christopher Nolan philosophy, the “one for them, one for me” process and how it’s possible to work out that way
Well I never saw Everything Everywhere All At Once and so I can’t say anything about that but just based on the idea of Marvel going after these indie filmmakers for Kang Dynasty or Secret Wars is something that as of right now I don’t really see, partly because while I’m sure Marvel will wanna go after some of them I also think there’ll be some that won’t really be interested in directing a big budget tentpole movie, I know some directors like Joss Whedon or James Gunn have made that transition but that doesn’t mean every director is gonna wanna do it, especially because as of right now Marvel’s reputation is not what it used to be, they used to be see as this big, huge juggernaut of a franchise that every director was dying to be a part of, but nowadays with the mixed reception they’ve gotten ever since Phase 4 I don’t think these directors really see the idea of directing a Marvel movie as that big of a deal anymore, in fact to tell you the truth I think these directors would be far more interested in working with DC right now, because right now they’re the ones putting out better content, and so I don’t think it’s gonna happen, because like I said, as of right now Marvel’s reputation is kinda muddied and so there isn’t really as much weight behind that opportunity right now
Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead would be my pick, they have this otherworldly, Lovecraftian kind of style that would go well with the enormity of a multiverse concept.
imagine winning 4 Oscars and being handed the keys to do whatever next film you wanna do, and thinking they are going to do a Marvel movie where their creativity is gonna be completely squandered in order to make a four quadrant by the numbers toy-selling movie. The chances are less than 5% if that.
Coogler is not directing Secret Wars if he can’t write.
Coogler directing & Waldron writing is a disaster in the making
Coogler is a world class writer.
Tell me what makes a good writer.
Chloe Zao won an oscar then made Eternals. Taika Waititi won an oscar then made Thor Love and Thunder. Maybe winning an oscar is a bad omen for the MCU lol
They won for DIRECTION, the problem with those films come from the screenplay
@@phoenixfunny4517 Taika won for Best Adapted Screenplay tho
@@snack491 you got me there. He also didn't write Thor alone. The woman that wrote MALIGNANT wrote it
@@phoenixfunny4517 but even that he still co wrote it, his direction was as awful as the screenplay anyway, as if he didn't even care at all, you can see that when he did interviews with Thor, he didn't even care.
@@phoenixfunny4517 and also the woman who co wrote Thor 4 didn't write Malignant.
They should just stick to original filmmaking.
May be they have to give more screen time to Michelle Yeoh in the next Shang-chi.
I'll repeat what a few others have said, although John and the gang may never read these. The Daniels already signed a 5 year deal with Universal. So there is no point to speculate. They already have been snatched up
Kevin Feige tried this before after the Daniels made Swiss Army Man. He tried to recruit them to direct Loki, and they said "No," choosing instead to make...Everything Everywhere All At Once. There's no universe in which the Daniels suddenly decide that because they've found their success, they can slack off and prostrate themselves before Marvel. Aside from the fact that they've signed to a five-year contract with Universal, they've done this song and dance before and made a choice that benefitted them, which makes them more likely to make that choice again. So there's no way they will ever be caught dead near a Marvel movie unless they're seriously strapped for cash.
Feige would have to have a dump truck of cash the same size as the one given to Daniel Craig after he said how much he despised Bond to sign on
EEAAO Is what Dr strange 2 should have been. I they want to, go for it . Also if they don't and want to continue with their own thing, also.
To completely different stories that deal with multiverse elements, you can say one get better with a completely different from each other
@@vice2versa no they didn't handle terribly they are using it less.. How many general audience can understand EEAAO? Marvel pushing their multiverse concept slowly u can see that in every project they are not complexing.. Yeah I agree EEAAO handled well in single movie but both projects has diff set of rules for multiverse
So you want the guys that just won awards for a super original film to direct a big franchise flick that needs to follow a 15+ year old formula?
Don’t know they don’t get back the writing team for infinity war and endgame
I preferred Dr. Strange's Multiverse movie over "Everything, Everywhere". I thought "Everything, Everywhere" was getting repetitive. Needed to cut 30 min off the film.
They never would. Too many restraints
The Russo brothers were the Producers of the movie Everything Everywhere All At Once- It's no coincidence. They've also mentioned a few times that the next Marvel movie they would come back for is a Secret Wars movie.
Perhaps EEAAO was a stepping off point for them to give themselves a blueprint of how to Direct the monstrous Avengers Secret Wars movie and have it out-do Endgame and test to see if the EEAAO directors collaborate well with them and make them the writers for Secret Wars.
The Russo's had absolutely nothing to do with EEAAO. They actually passed on the movie, but because they passed it on to someone, they got to get a credit out of it. That's why they weren't at the Oscars and no where near the stage when the REAL producers went up to accept the award.
@@johncampea Thanks for clarifying. BTW, I love your show. Been a fan since 2012, AMC days. But, interesting that they passed on it. Wonder why?
And yeah, I was wondering why they weren't up on stage. IMDB lists a whole lot of Producers. Very confusing since their names were in the opening credits of EEAAO. lol.
It would make me hopeful for Secret Wars but I don’t think Feige would go with author directories. Ryan Coogler would be even doper. Still and author but someone who has the trust of the Studio and Feige.
Coogler likes to write & direct. He’s not directing without being able to write.
Unfortunately Waldron is the writer 🤦🏽♀️
@@SheDreadzMe I think we'll see. Feige has some pressure of his chest with Iger being back and Coogles Black Panther films were co written by him. I think it's unlikely too though. At any rate we don't need Avengers movies again this soon. Especially with how tame Cain has across so far.
Absolutely not. Just because they won an Oscar doesn’t mean they should automatically direct a Marvel movie.
Of course not! Then it might actually be good!
In fact I would even argue they’re better than marvel
This is what I've been saying
I liked MOM more than EEAAO!
But MOM lacked the heart and soul that EEAAO had
I only liked the scenes with Elizabeth Olsen. She was carrying that movie. MoM would have been perfect as just a Scarlet Witch movie.
If they don’t already have some kind of passion for at least some marvel characters I don’t see why they’d even want to do it
Not likely but it would be amazingly hilarious if DC picked them up lol
I would love to see them at Marvel or DC *IF* they're given full freedom. I'll let them wreck everything because I trust them to make magic.
But if they get bogged down by studio demands? NOPE. They need to do what they want.
To quote George miller/tom hardy:to fix something that is already broken (MCU), you'll Go insane.
Match in heaven would be Russo brothers come back to do Secret Wars, case closed. Ryan Coogler is not a good choice for an Avengers film.
reunite the clan, bring in Marcus and McFeely as well
How can you tell Ryan coogler is not fit for an avengers film when he hasnt shown what he can do with an avengers film
Russo brothers coming back for secret wars is highly unlikely as said by both Russo brothers and Kevin fiege as Russo are busy with other projects
I could do it
^
ok
I support you.
I think you could.
Wolverine in avengers secret wars movie in 2024 today now yes 🤩🤩 yes yes 🤩
I think marvel will head hunt them tho 🤔🤔
It would be a massive waste of resources. Marvel's production schedule does not allow room for creativity or well produced films. I hope they go on to create original stories instead. Unless Fiege completely rethinks the way these films are made (he should).
They cost too much money now
