So people can't joke around anymore? Well, at least Russo didn't get slapped for it.
For Joe Russo, I thought it was funny. Someone was bound to make some kind of a comeback to Martin Scorsese. it was going to happen eventually. And I love the work of both filmmakers. I happily own their films\movies on dvd and\ or (4k) blu-ray.
Exactly! You don't have to pick sides! Marty spoke how he felt, Joe came back at him! It was bound to happen! Big deal!
Why is everyone so sensitive all of a sudden?
Micro Aggressions.
People just want to mad and outraged about something.
No kidding. I have no dog in this show (heh) but it was a funny joke. Not a jab IMO
...all of the sudden?..
@shawnstephens9288 Thanks..you saved me from typing that😀
It's just another example of people getting offended by something that has NOTHING to do with them.
I agree about different emotional experiences. I heard people cry when Peter got dusted in IW, and I also heard people gasp when Leo got shot in The Departed.
Martin has been taking shots at Joe's work for years, his response was harmless. I also find Martin's complaints about superhero movies dominating the box office an excuse for his own movies not making more money, Nolan doesn't seem to struggle at the box office and he makes what Martin would call "real cinema" Other directors have too. Killers of the Flower Moon might be a good movie ldk l haven't seen it yet but it's flopping at the theater and there's no superhero movie standing in its way
I think his problem with Marvel is that because of these superhero movies, studios have stopped making medium to big budget movies unless a Tarantino or a Nolan or a Ridley Scott or he himself is making it.
Other than these legacy directors, Hollywood only makes small budget original movies.
@@krishshautriya5170 that’s because those movies just don’t sell like they used to anymore. That’s not inherently Marvel’s fault to be fair. With all due respect to Martin, his last 3 films have all been considered financial failures. It’s not fair but Hollywood is industry first, creativity second.
💯🎯
With marvel movies flopping, dc being a disaster and Star Wars being increasingly de-eventified by tv spin-offs I think we’re at the end of “nerd” culture as the dominate. Look at barbenheimer. People are desperate for something different.
@@IVNHYPRFNK Ant Man is the only recent MCU movie that "flopped" the last 5 out of 6 movies have made $750-950M dollars so that's a false narrative
It’s just a fun joke video. Martin took how many shots at them? Turnabout is fair play.
I agree. No one will argue the Russos are on Scorsese's level but fair is fair. He took his licks without mercy. And objectively he's correct.
Russo took and edited Scorsese video. It was out of line
@@Ellipsis10 He's heavily criticized his work for years. This was barely a dent compared to the crap he's thrown at Russo and all his colleagues.
@@BeeChill7 It’s such a small joke, compared to the absolute mammoth shits Scorsese has taken on Marvel by comparison. Saying they’re killing cinema and the theater going experience, all on films Marty has said he doesn’t watch. Russo has every right to make light of this.
That part 💯🎯
This is a non issue. Scorsese bad mouths an entire genre and ALL Joe does is make a playful harmless joke in response. I doubt Martin is bothered by this himself.
People need to get a grip and grow up.
There’s what I think about this. The video that Joe Russo made wasn’t aggressive in my opinion. But there are those who say that even if it’s not offensive, the video was released at the wrong time due to Martin Scorsese’s Killers Of The Flower Moon box office bomb.
I don't believed that the Russo Brothers would be forgotten by film scholars or film students. It more like the Russo Brothers are going to mention but only for their box office smash with Endgame and Infinity War.
As for Martin Scorsese, he IS going to be remembered not just as one of the best directors ever but a filmmaker who is a champion for film restoration. I mean Martin made The Film Foundation to help restore old films with help from his friends.
Lmao I was waiting for that F-Bomb 🤣🤣🤣😂
Jon Favreau, director of Iron Man, the first Marvel Cinematic Universe feature film, has responded to recent criticism of blockbuster superhero movies voiced by auteur directors Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola.
Speaking to CNBC, Favreau was asked about the pair’s comments, and said in reply: “These two guys are my heroes, and they have earned the right to express their opinions. I wouldn’t be doing what I’m doing if they didn’t carve the way. They served as a source of inspiration, you can go all the way back to [Favreau’s breakthrough film] Swingers.”
As well as Iron Man, Favreau has directed its follow-up, Iron Man 2, the recent Disney remakes of The Jungle Book and The Lion King, and is the creator of the Star Wars spin-off TV show The Mandalorian coming out in the US next month.
Favreau added: “They can express whatever opinion they like.”
Scorsese and Coppola have both aimed barbs in recent days at blockbuster superhero films. Scorsese likened them to “theme parks”, while Coppola described Marvel as “despicable”. Their views were echoed by British director Ken Loach, who called superhero films “boring” and “a cynical exercise [that] has nothing to do with the art of cinema”.
But directors including James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy) and Joss Whedon (The Avengers) have defended the genre, with Gunn writing on social media: “Superheroes are simply today’s gangsters/cowboys/outer space adventurers.”
But superhero/comic book movies are usually targeted at a younger audience. Films like Tombstone, Unforgiven, The Godfather Parts I and II, Goodfellas, Casino, etc. are not.
This seems to be just a fun social media post. I don’t think this was terribly malicious. I think it was intended to be in good humor.
I can’t believe so many people were upset about this. It was harmless.
No, because Scorsese went a bit overboard in his critique of Marvel and at some point he was going to get something back. Its not like he just said it once. He said it 3-4 times and the last time he talked about how we have to save cinema from Marvel. That is eventually going to piss off some of the directors of the MCU movies. And its just a jab. Not a big deal.
Honestly, I do agree with some of Scorsese's takes, like the Marvel movies are proving his point right now as they continue to not be emotionally investing for me in my opinion. But Joe Russo does deserve to get a little even for what he's been saying. I don't think Scorsese would care and would probably find it funny, respecting him for that little jab. People are just taking this way out of proportion. Scorsese is still a great filmmaker and Joe Russo's Box Office joke was really funny. Not the end of the world like other people are making it out to be. And not a big deal to cry about and get angry at Joe for. Just idiotic really, but that's just me.
Whats weird is someone I know not that long ago said Scorsese movies usually do poorly at the box office, despite critical acclaim, so it should be a badge of honor for the filmmaker. People are reacting poorly to the contrary. Its not about whats better between commercial or critical success. Every studio ideally wants both, but film fans need a litmus test for what is considered "cinema" and whats just a movie or else it doesn't totally validate their hobby. Theres people who play professional basketball and those who shoot hoops in the park. Both need to use the court to play. Not everything is about being the best. Sometimes the sport is just the sport of it.
Exactly! Comparing Scorsese to Russo is like comparing Hans Zimmer to Lil Jon. Yes, Lil Jon makes more money but Zimmer is making art.
Congratulations on having the most sensible comment without have to shit on either Scorsese/Marvel.

Nothing to suggest that "oscar" isnt referencing the sesame street grouch, nor "box office" referencing a brothel.
everything is deemed "over the line" these days wow
Marty is a great director but he can't shut up about his disdain of cbm... this is the reason why he probably won't win any Oscar again ever
Remind me how much the Academy loves CBM....
No because Scorsese talks shit about the MCU all the time. He had it coming lol.
Agreed
The funny thing is that Russo did not even disrespect him or anything. It was just a friendly and playful response. Meanwhile Scorsese repeatedly tries to disrespect Marvel.
Nah it was a dumb little joke, no foul, no harm done. Hollywood outlets just needs controversy to get clicks on articles lol
People outraged on internet = water wet
Jennifer Aniston made headlines at the start of November when she declared, “There are no more movie stars.” It’s a statement that Quentin Tarantino agrees with, as evidenced by the director’s recent interview on “2 Bears, 1 Cave” podcast (via Mediaite). Tarantino attributed the loss of movie stars to the “Marvel-ization of Hollywood.”
“Part of the Marvel-ization of Hollywood is…you have all these actors who have become famous playing these characters,” Tarantino said. “But they’re not movie stars. Right? Captain America is the star. Or Thor is the star. I mean, I’m not the first person to say that. I think that’s been said a zillion times…but it’s like, you know, it’s these franchise characters that become a star.”
For Tarantino, Captain America is the star and not Chris Evans. “I’m not even putting them down frankly, to tell you the truth,” the director said earlier about movie stars no longer existing in bulk. “But that is one of the - the legacy of the Marvel-ization of Hollywood movies.”
Tarantino also clarified in the interview that he does not “hate” Marvel movies but dislikes them for being the only product Hollywood is interested in making these days.
“Look, I used to collect Marvel comics like crazy when I was a kid,” Tarantino said. “There’s an aspect that if these movies were coming out when I was in my twenties, I would totally be fucking happy and totally love them. I mean, they wouldn’t be the only movies being made. They would be those movies amongst other movies. But, you know, I’m almost 60, so yeah. No, I’m not quite as excited about them.”
“My only axe to grind against them is they’re the only things that seem to be made,” he added. “And they’re the only things that seem to generate any kind of excitement amongst a fan base or even for the studio making them. That’s what they’re excited about. And so it’s just the fact that they are the entire representation of this era of movies right now. There’s not really much room for anything else. That’s my problem.”
Don’t expect Tarantino to ever get involved in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The director said earlier this month he will not helm a Marvel movie because “you have to be a hired hand to do those things. I’m not a hired hand. I’m not looking for a job.”
Nah nice try but Quentin Tarantino is a fan of the Marvel movies
I do agree with most of that but this doesn't mean they're not cinema.
James Bond and to an older degree, Tarzan and Pink Panther- these are characters that are bigger than the actors and have launched' careers...isn't that the same?
Only difference is MCU has numerous of those characters, multiple 'star' characters and its big names who step into them. If the complaint is the fans are loving the characters instead of the actor, I think k we've established the problem.
Movies have been about the director and lead actor, not the characters and story.
Yes, I say this with straight face asmarvel struggles with writing characters and story.
Nope. He said he might have been if they came out when he read comics, but not now. Plus Disney fucked him with Hateful Eight so I'm sure he is not a fan of them. @@ZonteIzBlessed

Industry professionals, its just movies. You're not saving the world. Lighten up a bit
I love how chipper John says "Joe Russo" at the very beginning.
After Hours (1985) is a fun film to watch by Scorsese. His shortest among his full length films but it's a nice detour from his gangster films. No Keitel, De Niro, and Pesci.
As if he only made Gangster films. He's made several non-gangster films. This century he has the Aviator, Hugo, Silence, Shutter Island. I wouldn't call Wolf of Wall Street and KOTFM gangster either. So, really 3/9 of his films this century are "gangster", and all very different from each other.
The Russo brothers were pulled to meet the Daniels for EEAAO because they were both duos (according to Scheinert). Despite their names were included in the credits, they had obviously said "passed". Had they not done that, they would have had an Oscar.
It's interesting how arrogant some directors are but then the most successful in the business (George Lucas and Steven Spielberg) don't talk shit about people.

I honestly thought this was going to be something that was an actual issue. This is irrelevant. 😂
I thought it was hilarious that Russo did that 🤣
We have to remember that at the end of the day Martin Scorcese is an old man that is pissed because what he thinks it's cinema is not dominating box office currently and for that reason he decided to talk shit about the dominant genre. He's some classics that's not debatable but he's also forgetting that behind the genre he complains about there are many people just like him that are directors, basically the Russo brothers and him are colleagues of the industry, but Martin, being an old man, forgets that and talk crap about them, maybe not directly but he does and I believe that behaviour must change. Joe obviously feels attacked by those comments and he shouldn't feel that way because by principle NO ONE, weather is Scorcese, Cameron or Tarantino should talk shit about another colleague's work. They're all part of the same industry so they at least have some professional respect
Since Scorsese, Coppola, and Tarantino have said those things, has superhero films flourished since? Nope. So they were right years ahead of how most MCU fans think.
Yeah but that’s Disneys fault not Marvel…. Also Coppola shouldn’t talk he only got 2 amazing films lol
@@marionava3420 Even if he only released Apocalypse Now (which would be his third amazing film), he can talk.
This doesn't make sense, flawed logic. These things were said initially at the height of the MCU, Infinity War/Endgame. Yes, they've gone down hill since then but the comments are irrelevant to this.

Scorsese is great, but the audience dictates the demand. 70s till 90s was different. Now it's a different time. Moreover, from what it seems, comic films are already not the biggest thing around. So why are we targeting the genre now that's over its prime.

So Marty can take a huge dump on an entire genre of film, but Joe can’t make a lighthearted joke?? Foh 🙄🙄🙄
This
What huge dump was that? His remarks were overblown & taken out of context. His issue is his with the way the studios are pushing these movies. He has expressed this concern long before Marvel came around. How come you Marvel lovers aren't professing how much Godzilla 1998 is real cinema? And how come you Marvel lovers can trash films you don't like, but when somebody like Scorsese doesn't like your garbage, you have meltdowns?
I think the Russo's can revive Marvel but thats only where their direction is something lol. The Grey Man was a very bad movie lol. I dont like Scorcesese take on superhero genre but he earned that right. Spielberg, Cameron, Tarantino have said the same. They may have been wrong 3 years ago but look at the genre today....
Tarantino is clearly different from Scorsese. He's watched a lot of the MCU and other superhero movies and enjoyed them, he just doesn't want to make such movies himself.
No. It wasn’t. There mystery solved.
Joe just having fun.
Thay said but Scorsese had a major dig a while back at what Joe's career has basically been so turn about is fair play.
Aside from that I've never been more bored than watching Scorsese movies. The guy is way overhyped.
💯🎯
remind me who was offended?
Can't believe Marvel whiners are still offended over Scorsese's remarks that were overblown & taken out of context. His issue is with the way the studios push these big movies. A good example is when Tarantino had The Hateful Eight coming out, he had a contract with some cinema chain to show it in 70mm. Then Bob Iger comes & forces them to only show Star Crap The Force Awakens or else they won't get Disney films.
THIS is the kind of garbage Scorsese is worried about. Tarantino's film may not have been for everyone, but at least its more of a unique, & personal Tarantino experience. What the hell is so good about TFA? All the hype for that movie was for the original cast coming back. Once the excitement wore off people stopped caring.
Scorsese's "not cinema" comments is because of how his love of cinema is extremely personal to him. He isn't downright saying these movies aren't cinema, but with the way they are marketed & pushing theaters to mostly show these movies, its not how he views things as cinema.
Thirdly, this is a concern Scorsese has had for a while, LONG before Marvel started hogging the spotlight. I read a book on him a while back, which had an interview with him conducted around the time of Casino, where he used the same phrase that offended the Marvel lovers: "Theme Park movies." Except around this time, movies like Independence Day, Godzilla 1998, & the rise of Michael Bay were coming out. Funny how these Russos & other hacks like James Gunn haven't come to the defense of movies like these.
Scorsese frankly was a hell of a lot more polite than you Marvel lovers are to films you don't like. He has said he has tried giving them a chance, but they were just not for him. He did compliment the people that make them, but again, his issue is with the studios, NOT with the filmmakers. Marvel lovers always love to whinge whenever their superhero movies don't dominate the Oscars like Titanic or Lord of the Rings did, & always dismissing nominated films as "boring artsy fartsy movies that nobody on earth has heard of" (which shows how ignorant they are seeing as how people that follow the film festivals certainly know about these films).
The obsessed Marvel whiners would NEVER watch a film in black & white. I'm not talking about gimmick films like that Zack Snyder thing, but films from back in the 40's for instance. Old films in general they dismiss as just boring old crap, they'd never watch international cinema because they hate to "read movies" & they certainly never would watch films from the silent era for being "old dated garbage."
And look how much Marvel lovers trashed movies like Avatar for years. Constantly bagging it without giving it ANY kind of credit for what Cameron achieved on a technical level & always whining about the same excuse about a cliche plot (this tired old attack is itself a cliche). Fans can dish it out, but they can't take it. Fans demand everyone worship Marvel movies, but always attack movies they don't like.
This childish "joke" from this Russo guy just reeks of smugness. What have these guys done that is highly regarded that isn't Marvel? And how much credit do they really deserve for Marvel being big? Scorsese is loved by cinephiles not just because of his films, but his passion for film history & bringing attention to films that don't get much recognition. There is also no way in hell these Russo guys, or other whiners like Taika Waititi, would EVER watch a film from somebody like Tarkovsky, or Bergman, & would only turn their films off out of boredom within seconds.
based comment. Remember when the Russo's made Cherry with Tom Holland and said themselves they edited the film inspired by Tiktok videos?
Yup its funny
I agree i loved the back and forth respect that James' Cameron and The Russo brothers shared as Avengers Endgame and Avatar overtook one another in box office. Really classy.
Well said, John.
Quinn, Marty, & Francis were all right !! And were three years ahead of this marvel garbage era we're in right now. An yahh marvel fanboys can cry me a river 💯😂
Martin has been salty for a long time, he dreams of a box office weekend like marvel, but he’ll never get it
😂😂😂😂😂😂
With Ray on this one 😂
Sometimes, "cinema" means setting the record for most F-words multiple times, rather than box office records. I believe that's how the equation works. If a movie has more profanity than effects shots, it's automatically classier. Scorsese has long since earned the right to have whatever opinions about films that he wants, but the critical darlings deriding the things the masses like probably predates Aeschylus, and has always had just a trace of bitterness to it. They likely feel that they put more of themselves into their work, and it usually pays only a fraction of the dividends.
Just because a movie makes a lot of money doesn’t mean that it’s cinema. Taylor Swift makes more money than any living musician that doesn’t mean she’s the greatest living musician right now
I mean, Trolls 2 counts as cinema just as surely as Raging Bull does. There is an art and a science to both productions; it just so happens that the outcome of Trolls 2 is like a major leaguer swinging, missing, hitting himself in the face with his own bat, falling on his ass, and soiling himself. There's no accounting for taste, is what I'm saying. But you can't question that thousands of people dedicate a portion of their lives to even the dumbest blockbusters, and fellow filmmakers should know better than to deride that effort. That's something uninformed laymen do.
*Money talks. People pay for what they WANT to see. More people like Marvel movies than Scorsese movies. You want to argue about which movies are better? I wouldn’t argue Scorsese is a better film maker. But Marvel movies are liked a lot more by a much wider audience than Scorsese films. I love Scorsese’s movies. I love Marvel movies. Scorsese threw a rock first - it’d be ignorant of anyone to not expect pushback. Get over it. Marvel moves have made far more money than any Scorsese film.*
*They’re both great and should be able to coexist, but don’t whine about Joe Russo’s TAME jab when Scorsese has literally mounted a campaign trying to “fight back against superhero movies”.*
BOOOOOOM. Dropped the mike.
I doubt scorsese cares but perhaps russo should worry about making something decent outside of marvel.......even those marvel movies are more films by committee and feige then of his true vision....
Good! More people should take jabs at Scorsese. Hes been making excuses and blaming others for his own failures. He’s so jealous. And he’s overrated btw.
He’s not jealous, he’s care about cinema, the Russo brothers are product making yes men

You are also missing the point. Martin Scorsese wasn't targeting the Russo bro's specifically. He was talking about the Superhero genre dominating the box office. with marvel movies flopping, dc being a disaster and Star Wars being increasingly de-eventified by tv spin-offs I think we’re at the end of “nerd” culture as the dominate. Look at barbenheimer. People are desperate for something different.
The box office shouldn't be the correct measurement of a great movie, because, I truly believe that, there's more simple minded people in all countries.
Yes, sometimes even I want to watch something simple, especially if I'm a bit tired.
Superhero movies are in decline, maybe it's a burnout.
I could be wrong, but hasn’t Scorsese been critical of the Marvel machine rather than the specific film makers?? He argues that the genre and the Marvel franchise specifically being by far the largest part of the film market is warping young viewers ideas of what film is. And he’s not wrong.
He doesn’t like the genre or franchise films in general, not just the MCU. Film or “cinema” is not some kind of all encompassing objective reality. If people like cbm/franchise films then that’s okay. If people don’t like them that’s also okay. One opinion is not inherently valid over another when it comes to subjectivity.
@@skatemo100 Marty has praised the Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man, Christopher Nolan‘s Dark Knight and he was very complementary to Joker (which lifted a lot from Taxi Driver and King of Comedy).
Marty’s issue is with Hollywood’s fixation on big budget franchise features and right now: the MCU is the face of that problem, because of how Disney industrialized the process. Marty wants people to go to the theaters to watch romance films, comedy, films, drama films, musical films, and all other sorts of features at the cinema because he knows how transformative the film going experience is. Marty doesn’t want the cinema dominated solely by blockbuster experiences and for that to be the only thing people see you at the cinema.
Bear in mind I am not an anti Marvel film bro. I understand Marty’s point, but I do think he sometimes goes too far out of his way to completely discount the films. Especially considering the fact he doesn’t watch the films so I can’t really take him to heart when he himself is judging the books by their cover.
@@skatemo100 I agree that what is “cinema” is very subjective. I myself WAS a big MCU fan and would argue that their top tier stuff certainly is cinema and carried emotional weight for me. It’s not mutually exclusive to be a commercial product and have artistic value. A decent percentage of the stuff is rushed, passion-less, cash-grab product though. The lesser movies give the whole franchise a bad name despite the top tier stuff being of LEGIT high quality
Which genre of movies kept cinema alive during the pandemic? Scorsese is entitled to his opinion but he's delusional to completely dismiss the validity of the comic book movie genre.

The Russo Brothers do very well within established universes, but outside of Marvel one can’t say that Cherry or the Grey Man are examples of brilliant directing. They haven’t created a fantasy world from scratch like George Lucas, and they don’t have a unique style like Christopher Nolan.
Their future pets will be named “Netflix” and “Amazon video”.

As much as I enjoyed this from Joe Russo -- it was the wrong move. Appealing to "success" over "substance" is not a great argument to push. The argument he should have made was to highlight some of the deep themes in Civil War or something. Or post something from another movie like Logan. Appeal to the fact that Superhero movies do in fact contain substance. If you just say "Yeah well we made more money," it comes off a little shallow.

Martin Scorsese did not insult a world of fans, come on. I love Marvel films, and Martin Scorsese has not changed my opinion. The work on marvel films are amazing, but I can see his point. I do not think either director is wrong, it is just their opinions. While the Russo Brothers' films outside of Marvel are not very good, their marvel films were the absolute best. However, when I think of Scorsese, you cannot beat his filmography. At the end of the day, I will not lose sleep over it, no one should

Scorsese talks shit on superhero movies and then makes a terrible one. The Irish-Man?!? Whats his power that he gets old and young again???
It shows your taste when you think The Irishman is trash, but love superhero movies. I can tell you've never seen anything like Cries & Whispers, or Last Year At Marienbad.

@@marionava3420I once read a comment by Todd Phillips (the director of Joker and the Hangover movies) where he talked about how he never liked superhero movies because they were too “safe”. To him, there’s a lack of risk in those movies and they tend to be too easily digestible because they’re marketed toward a younger demographic. Superhero movies are meant for a broader audience, but Scorsese films are definitely not for everybody.
I think comparing the joke to Scorsese's comments is a bit of a false argument John. Scorsese made his comments about an entire genre of film that Russo just happens to have made movies in. Russo specifically responded to Scorese's video, which had nothing to do with him or comic book movies. Given the joke is "Haha my movies make tons of money, unlike yours" and its made directly at Scorsese's expense RIGHT in the middle of the Killers of the Flower Moon struggling at the box office.... I can certainly see why some people feel its disrespectful.
I don't care all that much, my problem is more that its completely unprovoked and came out of nowhere. Just seems pointless.
In what way is it unprovoked? It doesn't matter that Scorsese was talking about the genre as a whole. It's still talking shit about stuff that people worked hard on, and audiences enjoyed. Some of the most successful box office films of all time. How would you feel if you were the lead architect on multiple projects, and another architect comes along and starts saying shit about the style you've chosen for the buildings that have already been built? Stuff like how it's not really architecture, and how it's going to be the end of architects everywhere if we don't stop people from using your favorite style? And there was nothing disrespectful about it, it was a freaking hilarious joke, that just happens to be rooted in fact. It's also not Joe Russo's fault that nobody wants to spend three and a half hours watching KOTFM in the theatre. That's on Marty and the studio.
Disrespecting a genre disrespects those in the genre. It's like suggesting a racial stereotype isn't hurtful because it isn't personalized.
Nope he praised the work of people in the films, but he said the whole approach to making them was flawed. That's attacking the studio heads not the cogs. Did you even read the article because I bet not?@@MrBrock314

Scorsese always brings up Marvel when he has a film coming out. Why hasn't people noticed this?
The reporters always ask him the same question. To be fair he is against franchise films in general. He left Warner Brothers because they wanted him to make a sequel to The Departed.
He’s praised Christopher Nolan and *Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker* several times so he’s not against all comic book movies. Rather he’s against the amount of studio control associated with franchises.

To be fair, making people emotionally invested about the characters isn't really Scorsese's thing. That's simply not what's his movies are about. He mainly makes character studies about anti-heroes and intentionally unlikable characters.
