@@thestarkknightreturns I agree that comic book films are limited in form, they are after all great distractions from what's going on in the world today. In times of peace and stability, you'll find that people tend to be drawn to _deep_ movies and are willing to take a risk to see a movie that scares them. Yet now, most moviegoers just want a chance to escape so that's the main appeal of a comic book film. You get to see the good people defeat the bad most of the time. At least that's one way to look at it.

I feel their reaction lacks maturity and all it really seems to do is inflame people. It totally seems calculated due to the fact that these comments are being made at the MCU while it's in a transitionary period. It's like their thinking is "This is our chance to use _Cancel_ them and put even more doubt in people's minds!", so it doesn't seem like these comments were made simply as an opinion but more of a well-aimed sniper shot. It just seems downright mean-spirited and entitled.

@Light Side I get what you are saying about standards, but I think you are missing the point. These movies are on a SciFi/Action/Fantasy genre if we are to place them correctly. The genre that Coppolla and Scorcese deal with are drama, action and more adult themes. So, if our generation now finds these comic book-inspired movies great, there is nothing they should say about them. These movies are for entertainment, just like other types of movies like Cowboy movies, Pirate movies and such, they were made for that purpose. To me, they sound like it's sour grapes because they are acting as if they feel not relevant but they should take the high ground instead of sounding bitter. Anyway, life goes on, we need to enjoy it.

I do feel Coppola and Scorsese believe in what they are saying but at the same time, they are really upset at how much revenue the Marvel generates for each film. That is why they qualify with "Marvel...". This is also why mediocre actresses J-Lo and Jennifer Anniston has to open their mouths. After all of these years? Where is the complaint on James Bond ( I love these films but I am using them as a reference) or the "Saw" franchise?. Stop lumping in other companies and movies when the mcu fucks up, just because the mcu fucks up it doesnt mean other films/companies are in that same boat. These people really see that the mcu has always been generic and the same output we get when we go to the theaters and they arent rewatchable imo. Majority of mcu films suck and are boring, they have no creativity, nothing to push the comic book genre forward and is most of the same shit. Mcu gets this much attention/money because it's really targeted for kids and families, but comic book nerds are just happy they are being portrayed on the big screen and overhyping it because they been reading comic books as kids and think it's good enough so they settle with mediocrity.

Give me a break. Marvel is clearly propaganda. And to say "are you telling me Ryan Coogler making 'Black Panther' is somehow doing something that is less than what Marty Scorsese or Francis Ford Coppola has ever done on any one of their movies?" is plainly dumb. Coppola nearly went bankrupt making one of the greatest films of all time, Apocalypse Now. Scorsese managed to pull himself out of a downward drug spiral by shooting Raging Bull, another one of the greatest film ever made. For them to be disrespected in this way, by people who do not know anything about actual quality cinema, or even the people whose film knowledge their questioning , is frankly appalling. If Stanley Kubrick or Orson Welles came back from the dead to tell you that Marvel is sh*t, you still wouldn't believe them! Before you define Marvel "films" as cinema, realize that there are plenty of incredible films that are high quality AND entertaining! Take Pulp Fiction, Forrest Gump, or The Shawshank Redemption for example. You don't have to turn off your brain in order to enjoy movies. There has to be a reason why whenever they ask one of the greatest filmmakers who ever lived what their opinions are on Marvel drivel, they all give the same answer. These are people who have spent their lives studying cinema, and watching films that you don't even know exist. They went to college to study film and earn degrees. You're just people who like movies made from picture books that a five year old could read! Have you even heard of 8½ or Seven Samurai? You're all buffoons! Absolutely ridiculous. Unlike Scorsese, who was making a point and apparently "being nice", Coppola is simply being mean-spirited.
The MCU movies are indeed "hogtied into three-act structures", they do rely too much on comedy; they really are economical. But this does not absolutely determine what the movies are or could ever be; the filmmakers, like James Gunn, still play a large part. All MCU films being the same is a myth, and even fans could fall for this notion too.
I don't think anyone could learn anything from, say... 'Captain Marvel', other than the studio's cynicism and greed, but Gunn's 'Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2' really influenced my writings and my stories, and it allowed me to reflect on myself.

Biniam Gaming good! That is very good.
Watching a marvel movie is like looking out a window for the first time and seeing squirrels tease a dog. Which is cute and funny. But the novelty fades after about 15 seconds.
Then through the same window you could watch a thunderstorm, lightning. A rainbow. A garden grow. The stars, shooting stars.
      Just truly awe inspired events.
I’m glad you can find yourself to be entertained by more than squirrels hi jinx.

No different than Gordon Ramsey saying Fast Food sucks. Coppola makes a different type of movie for consumption than what the Marvel consumption is. Not sure why we need to react to someone's opinion about something.

This kind of backlash is to be expected once Endgame became the highest grossing movie of all time. Like Avatar and Titanic before, the target becomes bigger when you reach those heights. To them, a film can't be good if it pleases and unites the masses.

LMAO! This is stupid . Coppola and Scorsese are absolutely right. They were NOT bashing the directors directly they were bashing superhero films . For John to cherry pick certain characters to say they convey emotions in superhero films is laughable. You all need to man up and accept that superhero films are theme park rides that we gladly pay to entertain us. Your not going to pay to see a superhero drama or a superhero sitting on a therapists couch talking about his problems or a broken down superhero hooked on drugs and crying. Your paying to see superheroes kick ass use powers and blow shit up.

Yeah, this sort of a thing reminds me of my dad whenever he attacks some of the things I love, specifically Doctor Who and Twenty One Pilots' music.
Both aren't really conventional works of art but I connect with these things on a personal level and he attacks them every chance he gets. At first it felt like a simple opinion that he had but it now feels like a strange vendetta that's hurtful because those two things are a part of me.
Sometimes I wonder whenever someone goes on a campaign like this if they consider that some people really find special value in these works that help them through tough times in their lives or cope with ongoing things, like mental illness.

It's like Kris Carr says. Films are art and art is subjective. My my lady likes Rob Zombie films like House of a Thousand Corpses and The Devil's Rejects while I am not a huge fan of those films but I appreciate what she sees in those films. They're just not for me but I still enjoy them they're not my favorites like there are hers. But it is Art and it is subjective.

The Marvel Experiment was (and is) a significant phenomenon in the history of cinema, on a par with the inventions of feature-length films, talkies, Citizen Kane, 70's blockbusters, the digital revolution and all sorts of other stuff you can name that changed the landscape of the form. And at every point, there were members of the old guard who panicked and railed against it. This is simply more of that.
