    • Dark Side Of Star Wars...
    Viewer Question:
    Count Kenny - Hey Everybody! So last night the Star Wars social media accounts posted a message telling fans to not be racist. This is in response to Reva actress Moses Ingram posting the many racist DMs/threats she’s received. Unfortunately this kind of toxic behavior is common when you look at what’s happened with John Boyega, Kelly Marie Tran and even Ahmed Best. What are your thoughts on the matter?

      Just curious is it acceptable for Star Wars fans who are PoC to be upset at someone whitewashing the history of Star Wars to virtue signal, are they allowed to be offended and respond or are they racist as well?
      "To me, it’s long overdue. If you’ve got talking droids and aliens, but no people of color, it doesn’t make any sense. It’s 2022, you know."
      To a degree with the above message and others she brought a lot of the hate on herself apparently PoC don't exist until her and what John and others are not saying is it isn't just white people aka racists who responded to this.

    I live in an all white town and my daily life can be hard when people go out of their way to hurt me because of my skin. I was at a low point last night. Today I woke up and decided around lunch to go see Top Gun Maverick to cheer myself up. Now I'm eating some Ramen and watching some Jon Campea.
    Keep moving forward. Keep your head up. Keep putting one foot in front of the other. I know this isn't fair and I know a lot of us are being denied a fulfilling life right now full of love and friendships.

      You aren't allowed to dislike a character like this without being called a white supremacist. I've seen this same song and dance over and over again time and time again. A character played by a woman or minority (or both) gets a fair degree of criticism, and immediately it goes to "DEATH THREATS! RACIST ABUSE! SEXISM!"
      No evidence needed of course, but now any criticism of the character (or more importantly, the screenwriting of the show) can instantly be deflected, and the Nerd Crew-esque youtube channels go along with it every time. I'm sorry if Moses Ingram has gotten some level of abusive comments, that sucks, but almost everything I've seen has been directly criticizing the character, and now that will be much harder to do because they have a shield.

    What keeps me being a Star Wars fan is the fact that the non-toxic fans are the overwhelming majority, despite what the hateful online fanbase would have people believe. Each sequel trilogy film made over a billion dollars at the box office. Mandalorian and Book of Boba Fett had a large viewership. The recent Celebration event was well-attended. The animated shows continue to impress, and move the franchise in exciting new directions. Star Wars, like America itself, finds strength in diversity, not division.

If you see it through that lens, she's more ambitious than annoying. Kenneth Branagh was asked about this and stated he could not get financing without casting in this way.

    I just have to say, mad respect has to go to you for mentioning those that spin certain responses like this to turn it into a blanket "They're calling the fans racist for daring to criticize!" statement and bringing up that they're clearly more mad that they themselves are being called out for being those racists. A big problem among people who behave like that is that they themselves don't and will most likely never view any of what they're saying as racist. They'll always put it under different names to try and soften the blow and when they can't? They simply conjure defenses that basically amount to "The internet is a nasty place and if you can't handle being called a slur fifteen hundred times in under an hour then you're too sensitive and should get off the internet." 90% of the time. That being said, they also are loud and regardless of if they're one idiot screaming from the back of the room? It gets hard to ignore at a certain point. Not to mention they have clout so the average joe who has no idea what's going on might just see what they're saying, not realize how awful that person actually is and suddenly get spurred into believing that they themselves are being called racist and will never follow the source to decide for themselves.
    This isn't just a problem with Star Wars fandom, it's basically endemic to most popular fandoms. This disgusting twisting of the already ridiculous statement of "The customer is always right" and even just basic tenets of criticism taints so many discussions and frames quite a few of the hardworking men, women and everyone outside and in-between as nothing more than robots who are programmed to move and talk a certain way for nothing more than our amusement that aren't supposed to talk back or acknowledge toxicity in any capacity which is something that needs to change starting primarily with how people acknowledging this need to stop with the "My problem wasn't that..." nonsense. No one and I should stress this, NO ONE is stating otherwise. If you dislike a performance for reasons that aren't objectively horrible like racism and aren't parroting any of those ridiculous talking points? You do not need to say anything or at least not in that fashion. Disney is not calling everyone who dislikes or even hates the performance racist, John isn't calling you racist. In fact, he has worded his statement in such a way to where anyone who has a good head on their shoulders can realize "Oh he isn't talking to me, he is shifting between talking to regular film fans and the shitty racists who are probably already fuming about how he isn't endorsing their actions.". The best course of action you can do is provide a big hearty middle finger to those racist assholes or do what's seen here, acknowledge that you have criticisms but that those stop with the character and speak with a loud and blunt voice that those who stoop to the low of attacking an actor in this manner because they dislike a character are people who deserve to be booted the fuck out of the fandom.

    There is a toxic incel segment of star wars fandom. They have abused Rian Johnson, John Boyega, Hayden Christensen, and even George Lucas himself. These racists and bullies are not representative of all Star Wars fans. It's just that some aspects of nerd culture tend to attract fringe society no lifers and they become so invested in the fantasy that any diversions from their expectations are met with attack. However, all that being said, I refuse to overlook a poorly written and directed character of any color. I personally have not been impressed by the character but that is no reason to attack the actress.

    • @MoonShocked
      @MoonShocked Před 2 lety +2

      You refuse to overlook poorly written characters, but defend Rian Johnson of just being a victim of toxic incels because the movie was poorly written and directed. Quaint. Criticism is not bullying, I know you probably take it that way, my post might even be an attack on your character in your mind, but Last Jedi was not awful because it deviated from my "expectations." It was just poorly done. Wonder if he is still getting his trilogy, what ever happened to that?
      He was not abused because people did not enjoy the movie and correctly blamed him for the result of that given his direction (or lack thereof) was the inherent issue. And even if he was, he started attacking fans too. So even if your questionable logic was true, at a certain point, he was basically asking for it. No idea why anyone not looking for conflict would antagonize people already "abusing" them. I guess that makes more sense than the Last Jedi did, though, so it is possible, I will admit.
      Comparing this to the actual abuse or genuine racism some Star Wars actors and actresses have endured is disgusting. You are belittling their experience. That is far more toxic than throwing a fit because I didn't appreciate a movie as much as you did.

    • @mrbrainchild7637
      @mrbrainchild7637 Před 2 lety +4

      @@MoonShocked Not liking the Last Jedi is one thing abusing and threatening the director is another. Apparently you were one of those people. I hated the Last Jedi thought it was the worst movie in the entire Star Wars series. But I never threatened or abused the director online like many others. But apparently you condone that. Apparently, I touched a nerve with my comment. Usually that means there is truth to it. also, the comparison you allegedly find disgusting is a pattern of toxic behavior racist or otherwise that the fringe segments of the fandom impose on actors, directors creators etc. That is not how you critique something you dislike, by threatening and bullying the parties involved. Your justification of the behavior further proves you were one of the main perpetrators of it. Rian Johnson's reaction to his abuse was not more reason to attack and threaten him. He chose to react the way he did but it was a REACTION not an action. In the end, this is a fantasy genre of entertainment and it's super silly to be so invested that you resort to such behavior. Find more meaning in your life.

    It's perfectly ok to not like a character, it's also one thing to then go and throw racist and disrespectful messages the way of the actress who is in no way at fault for it. We haven't even seen the full arc of the character and people are already acting like she has ruined the entire Star Wars universe. No one can just be patient, as even Obi-Wan has told Anakin many times before, "Patience" is all that's needed to understand why she is the way she is.

    There was nothing in the first two episodes that indicated that they casted her for diversity. Same for John Boyega. She is an actress that was casted in a TV show and happens to be black. That’s why I would look at you funny, if you get bothered and say that “they’re doing it for diversity” yet there’s nothing here that indicates that. Also people don’t even listen to everything that creators say. John didn’t say that this was a large part of the Star Wars fandom. He literally said it’s a small percentage but that they’re very vocal.

I think it's a sign of oversensitivity, but I can understand it.
