Jeff idk if this message will reach you but I just wanna let you know how much I appreciate all the videos and knowledge I've learned through your videos. I live in south Louisiana and after hurricane Ida I had gut my home to the studs and rip all my 3/4 inch oak floors up. Through all your videos every step of the way in my long journey to recovery you have made every project I'm undertaking much simpler by giving me the knowledge to do the jobs myself. So I really just felt the need to try and reach out and just say how much I truly appreciate everything your doing 🙌. Can not thank you enough really!!!

Well put Jeff. 25 years ago when I was in high school we were told the same thing “Get a good college degree. You don’t want to be working manual labor.” I don’t understand why no one differentiated trades from unskilled manual labor. I never realized how much a good tradesman could make.
I’m engineer now and I make a good living but the last couple years I’ve watch a lot of CZcams channels like yours and doing small jobs around my house and it’s awesome. Often I wish I had be told about the benefits of learning a trade or two. You can bet my two sons will be told better!

Unfortunately when I was 18 years old, there was a lot of bias against girls taken shop classes. I remember I came home from school so mad because I was forced to take cooking class and wasn't allowed to take shop class. which is probably why I hate to cook. My mother had eight children and they all have a college degree except me. I managed to have two careers in my life as a Emergency Medical Technician and a Cardiac Telemetry Technician which are actually medical trade schools. I find my joy in building things and remodeling my fixer upper. My family calls me the "Jane of all trades." Perhaps this housing cost crisis would allow trade to be put back on the career list in high schools. Great video.

    You are absolutely right!
When i was younger i worked for my father doing construction, I later joined the I.U.O.E and learned a few thing beyond construction!
It started at a vey young age,
My interest in how things worked!
Built my first bicycle @8 with a pair of vicegrips and a screwdriver!
Went from a technical school into building maintenance/union,and have held a multitude of positions/certifications/seals!
This has now given me the knowledge to Johngineer my own positions!
    And like you said...
"I wish someone told me sooner"
    That being said...
I had not missed 1 day of work throughout the entire pandemic!
Keep up the good work, understanding, and the good words of wisdom Brother!

Wow. What a great video. I managed to get a job as an estimator trainee for a roofing contractor after hurricane Harvey hit in Houston. I drove there and stayed in motels for a few weeks, driving all around the city and climbing on roofs. Then it turned out no one had flood insurance, which was what 90% of the claims were. I came back to my home town, then one of the PMs quit suddenly, and my boss gave me his job, even though I had no experience. So I had the chance to learn on the fly, organizing trades and becoming friends with our in house labor. I was able to earn their respect through getting my hands dirty and helping as much as I could when we were short handed.
Fast forward 4 years and I have been in business for myself since 2018. I’ve learned framing, finish carpentry, painting, drywall, mud, electrical, roof work, and am just about to start my first solo tile job in our kitchen.
My base rate for handyman work is $50 an hour, and I’m cheaper that a lot of people. Easy to clear $600 in one day with the right job.
The one pitfall is getting too deep into the fog economy with services like thumbtack, BBB, and Angie, which will drain your money fast if you’re not ready to schedule out jobs for a year.
Throughout the whole process, I’ve been a big fan of home renovision. You have a video for everything. Thanks Jeff!

Jeez Jeff, you know I'm a 55 year old nurse practitioner working in critical care and I wish I'd known years ago how much I loved working with my hands, and how obsessed I'd get with DIY. I'd have made it my living. Healthcare is so darn cutthroat and competitive, not to mention the expensive schooling. I'd definitely have told 20 year old me to become a contractor instead. Even so, I think I'll still try to do some jobs on the side with the things I'm good at. I transformed my entire house by myself, learning as I went, and I'm still learning. OK so my body can't handle quite as much physical labor as it used to but i still love to do it. So grateful for your channel and sound advice.

Jeff, You are spot on with this video. I remember in high school I wanted to build houses and somehow I was talked out of it. I ended up going into the IT field. I've lost my job several times because no one told me that most IT specialists work on contracts that only last but for a few years. Anyway fast forward to today and I've abandoned the IT field and create training videos. Long story short, I still have my love for construction and on my third and final home I've decided to do the renovations thanks to your website and encouragement. It's hard work, but rewarding nevertheless. I talk your name up to everyone I know in Richmond VA, especially the ladies. I want them to experience how empowering you can make someone feel about tackling their own renovations and then I give them my numbers of what I spent vs a contractor for hire. You my friend have saved me money and renewed by love for the craft of renovation. Cheers!

My father wasn't particularly handy, so messing with computers and software ended up being more accessible, so that's what I ended up doing professionally. But I always remember being impressed with the kind of DIY work my grandfather was able to do, and was puzzled by the way some people look down on other people who do work in the real world.

The only way to get what you pay for now is to do the work yourself. I own a mobile home that I am renovating and most of your videos still apply to me. I have always had some skills growing up with a contractor for a father. So I am much less afraid to at least try it myself. I learned to sheetrock using your videos ( not good at it, but I still learned). I became a much better painter because of your videos. I think the biggest thing you taught me was about the theory behind water mitigation and how the roof, gutters and the landscape around your home are part of the same mitigation system. My trailer had massive water damage around many windows and in some parts of the ceiling. I was frustrated at the damage because I knew, I had to fix it right so it never happened again and learned to maximize my budget as well. So you have been invaluable to me. I am too old now to work in the trade, I spent most my life doing manual labor and my body is in rough shape at 50. This kind of work is not something you can do to retirement age. You have to start early so by the time you hit your late 40's you are not doing the work anymore, you are supervising others doing it. Your body will thank you.

It’s like you made this video specifically for me.. I got started in acrylic bathroom remodeling two years ago. And one year in I’m my own crew. I’m subcontracted out by my employer and half the time I don’t have a helper all while jobs have become even more stressful with electrical, drywall, plumbing, and all the little nuances per individual home. I’ve made plenty mistakes and returned to plenty of jobs. I’m not the fastest and have spent 12-14 hours on a job daily just to reach deadlines. Thankfully pay is already amazing and it’s only going to get better. I just wish I had more time to grow the skills I’m still newly developing before dealing with all the pressure and responsibility.
There have been multiple times where I’m confused and stuck on a job with no reply from my bosses and I’ve found a video of yours that helped me figure stuff out. I’d love to shake your hand someday and say thanks in person! The knowledge you share is so valuable

    Hey Jeff,
I'm a web designer from the maritimes and I recently purchased an old 1800s house and will be slowly but surely renovating with the help of your videos.
Something that I have noticed is the price of labour is steadily increasing and I think that is a good thing.
At the beginning of the pandemic, every local shop that didn't have an ecommerce platform and knew I did websites, bombarded my email with requests for online shops for curbside pickup/delivery. A great way of quoting was to determine how much it would cost me to *not* do what I really want to do with my time (play video games, watch movies, relax with my partner, work on my own projects etc.). Turns out its upwards of 8-10k per week...and customers would pay because the value was there. Also, I would keep increasing my price until I started hearing "No".
Trades are valuable, the demand is out there. Get money, get paid.

That’s how it is…as we get old we realize all the missed opportunities we could have taken advantage of if someone would have told us. So many times I’ll have that same thoughts over and over. But unfortunately the ones who you think would tell us really has no clue or even if they did tell us..would we listen.. so it’s always a catch.
But at least you are able to drop your wonderful wisdom on us who feels that theses jobs are too impossible for us to take on. You give a lot of us hope and saving us money in the long term. Thank you so much for your guidance and these videos!

Jeff, Thank You so much! I'm not in the trades (I'm a bean counter), got my degree and went to work for someone else. And trade people make the world go around, truly! Because of your videos, I was able to improve my house and sell it for a good profit. Your education is invaluable to anyone willing to give it a go and get out of their comfort zone. You and your team Rock! I just wish I'd learned your message of being valuable earlier in my life too.

Man Jeff, you are so spot on. Your comment about the new guy/gal starting out on their own is accurate. Managing the work is a huge part of owning the business and many who have acquired great skills are lousy at that part, causing project failure and dissatisfied customers. Here's a small tip: return ALL phone calls. Set up your phone message to say you return calls between 12-12:30 and again at 6-630. That way you can work without constant interruption but let your customers know you can be confident you'll call them back. Not returning calls is a cardinal business sin.
    One of your best videos.

similar to the path I took. started out as a flooring installer. got into CAD drafting and worked my way into project managing. Been in material handling systems, telecommunications, landscape architecture, architectural millwork. Now i work at a big GC down the road from my house. I retired the PM role and do estimates now, for me, the lesser amount of stress was worth it.

As a DIYer I buy all Ryobi tools. A Drill, Impact, Sawzall, Circular saw, Multi-tool, flashlight, 2 batteries, charger, and a carrying bag all for $200 is just too good of a deal to pass. A DeWalt equivalent combo would run over $700
Now if i ever need a new tool, Ryobi likely has it and it costs anywhere from $30-$100

Friend of mine. Son of a carpenter. His mother pushed him towards college and white collar jobs to not be like his father. Communications degree. Worked for a media conglomerate signing papers and sitting in meetings. Made those 6 figures. He ended up getting laid off when the media company merged with another. Used his knowledge of working with his dad when he was a kid to start a GC/handyman business to keep food on the table. He got a new communications job but he ended up being so prosperous with the GC business that he now makes those 6 figures and works only on weekends flipping houses. Trust your knowledge, don't stop, and stay hungry

After 19 years managing automotive retail dealerships and making over 6 figures working 60+ hours a week, I started flipping houses last year. Little by little, I’m doing more of the work myself because it’s so hard to find anyone not booked out for months and months, and half of the time the job done is terrible. Turns out, I not only love doing the work, I’m making more money and I have more free time for the wife and kids. My quality of work keeps getting better and better and this channel has been an absolute gold mine, plus a real a real life saver a handful of times lol I really can’t thank you enough for the amount of detail you include, it really helps guys like me to have a better understanding of whatever project I’m working on. My friends and relatives can’t believe what they see me do now days and I’m still just a rookie by all standards.
Quick story for anyone thinking about getting into a trade, I just had the nerve to buy an unfinished cabin on 5 acres with almost no drywall or plumbing and barely any electric ran, on top of a freaking mountain in WV! It’s really in the middle of nowhere, with a driveway most cars can’t even drive up because it’s so steep and winding. Once you make it though, the view is breathtaking. Never seen a piece of property like this in my life and I never would have had the nerve to buy it if I hadn’t learned so much watching these videos, especially the A-Z ones. The previous owner passed away and it’s been empty for almost 5 years so the condition was absolute sh*t. Nothing worked. I can do so much of the work on my own now thanks to spending hours watching these videos it still blows my mind. My ultimate goal is to get a my contractors license but that’s still a ways off. It’s absolutely amazing to wake up and realize this is my life now. Instead of the new Lexus I bought 2 years ago I wish I bought a pick up lol I also wish to god someone told me about this career 25 years ago before college, or wasting 2 decades in a career that filled my head with mostly useless knowledge and left me feeling empty and burned out. Knowing that I’m creating homes that people will love to live in for years and years is incredibly satisfying. I have so much respect for anyone working in the trades, but I am almost glad it’s like a well guarded secret lol
Anyway, just wanted to say thank you again for posting such valuable, life changing content and good luck to everyone out there getting their hands dirty! 🍻

  • @northernlightsrenovations1710

The school of hard knocks, I'm an alumni Jeff. You are quite correct, the trades are quite valuable and there is money to be made here. However, there's at least two other components that are important to make it in this business (besides skill). One is personality. You need to be at least a little outgoing and friendly. If you have the personality of a rock then you are better served working for someone else, instead of starting your own business. The other is confidence. People can smell confidence and decide almost immediately if you can do the job based on how confident you appear. However, I caution those cocky folks out there that think they know everything and 'appear' confident because it will come back to bite you. That's a rock solid promise.
