      Hey, Jeff, just wanted to take a minute and tell you thank you for all that you do. When I find myself having a hard time getting motivated- like now with moulding/base boards, etc...- I sit back, have a cup of coffee and watch your videos. I do have an OCD issue with perfect miters, 90/45 deg., etc...and have to be reminded that there are no perfect corners, floors, etc. When it's going to be hidden, never seen, but is structurally sound, then perfection does not matter so I need to move on; it can be easy for me to get stuck on something and forget the big picture. Thanks again.

    I went from literally a level 1 to a solid 8 thanks you and a handful of other youtubers. I am about 3 1/2 years into a full (and I do mean FULL) house reno. There wont be a single inch of this house that I havent laid my hands on. But we are nearing the end of the interior reno and its a model home. Counter tops that are custome heights, hand made door and window trim, new kitchen with pull out cabinet drawers, built ins, etc etc etc.
    I do sincerely appreciate all the help man!

      @thehumantoeRD Před rokem +2

      @Darvin Espina Im in TN. I found that local lumber yards are the best places for framing and other soft woods. Theres a place locally that has the best options for plywoods. Ill still hit up the box stores for certain things like fasteners, etc.
      I also drive into MS to a wholesale store for stains and urethanes. They are usually a fraction of the prices even online.
      When in doubt ask around. Ive had conversations with people at the lumber yard who told me about little hot spots in my area for awesome deals.
      Edit: also check out a habitate for humanity restore if you have one in your area. Theres some great deals on appliances, cabinets, and hardware if you get lucky. But their stock wildly varies from week to week.

    As someone who decided to renovate their own house, from drywall, to plumbing, to electrical, to tiling and flooring, with barely any prior experience, I can honestly say he's absolutely right about putting an hour of research for each hour of times spent on the project. You can't just watch one youtube video and think you know the right way to do something. Oh and try to practices a task before doing it for real.

    As someone who took on the Level 10, I completely agree with all your levels, and all the advise you have mentioned. I did do a couple things along the road, like rebuilt my buddies food destroyed basement (including complete wet bar fit out, and restoration of the bathroom), and built a sauna from the ground up (using a similar idea to one of your shed videos). I'm a mechanical and electrical engineer, so that helps, but all the "build" was really new to me. I'm still climbing that ladder, the one beast I am planning to have done by someone else is the roof. It's just too big to be open for so long. I've built a small barn roof, and the sauna roof since starting this, and they basically showed, they are too big to do alone. Great ranking system you have here! Cheers! Scott from Japan

    All my life I didn't move a needle and was careless about these type of labors, until last year when I moved in another place and suddenly I got a crazy attraction to DIY and ever since I'm studying, learning and doing everything myself
    I might have this inherited from my grandfather who was a solid level 10, I have an obsession of doing things perfectly but it takes me huge amount of time cause sometimes I feel like I'm reinventing the wheel but it's so fun at the same time 😅
    I regret not learning from a younger age but when you're a kid ur head is messed up.

He is honest about what you will need, gives good estimates on costs, time-frames, tells you when you will need a helper, shows you when and where you can save money and where you can't cut corners. He's always encouraging and adds humor without detracting from the attention needed to get the job done. Cheers!

We have finished our attic in our first house and have big plans for the next one in A couple of months. The whole house needs some TLC and we’re ready and unafraid. We will be using an architect, structural engineer, electrician and masonry tradesmen. But We are confident in handling the plumbing and carpentry. I’ve built a couple vanities and built in cabinets. Love your videos and follow your channels for quite some time now. I work as a PM for large scale construction project commercial and residential but do rate myself a 7 on your scale... Anything major I will do with contractors right away - think about your investment when tackle more than a bath Reno or adding a couple of outlets... If you get proper contractors you will have a warranty and they will be liable if something goes wrong (insurance cover)... Don't be fooled you can do everything on your own but even knowing the building physics and understanding structures if you make a mistake on your own and even worse without the proper permit you will loose a lot of money and your insurance won't pay and raise your premium 😉 ... Thanks Jeff - love it and great work. You even motivated some young ones to pick up a trade believe it or not

    I'm happy being a master level 5 on the "JEFFY WEFFY METER"!!!!! Additions, roofing, siding, and all exterior work is for the birds. It's faster, cheaper and easier subbing all that grunt work out to crews that specialize in these areas. As a contractor I also make sure I get a monetary taste off of those crews I higher for my jobs. I would NEVER suggest a weekend DIYER trying to build an addition on their home or a garage It's just too much work and skillset. I won't even do it and I'm an experienced contractor. TOO MUCH GRUNT WORK for this old man.

    Honestly I think unless you’re into the multiple six digit income-and you’re physically able-these are skills every homeowner should have (or at least a spouse can do).
    I’ve an unfinished basement and on the latter half of adding a walled off 90 square foot office. Lumber, electric, drywall, flooring, all in for no more than a thousand bucks. Built a deck last year and saved at least $8k in labor.

    I love this scale! As a 55 y/o woman, I have completed many updates and small remodels. My 25 y/o daughter and I built a chicken coop and thought that we would be capable to build a tiny house. Currently we are in the finishing stages of building from scratch a tiny house on wheels. My dad of 80 y/o welded the frame for us. Whenever we have a question on how to do something, we ask each other 'what would Jeff do?' We have gained so much knowledge from you, Thank you. It is true that I have spent equal time learning and researching how to do it and best practices for my area/climate. I was amazed that I was at a level 10! However I really don't like level 9 (changing the structure). Thank you again for the practicality and common sense approach.

We are both women and are (certified) professional landscapers who have tackled everything on our own (well almost everything - cracking, bowing and shifting block foundation is a little out of our scope). Wish I COVID send you before and after pictures of some our complete home renos and some landscaping projects. I'm sure you'd be impressed. Thx for all the tips and tricks. They really help a lot. Time is money, right. Hope to meet you someday when I'm in Ottawa. If you head to the island, let me know so I can help you organize your time here.

    At first, I heard the scale was Jack referring to Jack of all trades. Jeff-meter makes more sense for you, Jeff. I bought a 1890 house last year and have learned a lot. I'd say I'm a 3, learning 4 still, but know how to do plumbing and small electrical changes. Biggest project in the home that we just completed remodeling the kitchen, new cabinets, taking down the 3 layers of walls as they has the shiplap to plaster, then just put drywall over that. I'll send pictures of before and after when we stain and add handles. Quite a difference though as we went from a 18"x54" counter space in the whole kitchen to 25" wide and 20' of counter space, a big difference. I even made a custom cookie sheet cabinet instead of using a 3" spacer.

    I recently walled off our upstairs loft to make it into a 4th bedroom, and it was daunting to be doing so many different aspects of DIY. Framing, electrical, insulation, drywall installation, mud work. So many different tools and modes of thinking. It's no wonder many tradesmen specialize in just one area! The one good outcome was it showed me what I was capable of doing, and now I feel empowered to try my hand at other things.

      You’re capable of doing whatever you put the time into learning. Most trades aren’t rocket science. They only seem hard because you don’t know how easy they actually are.
      If people don’t want to learn then they aren’t capable of anything. If they do learn the. They are capable of anything. The question is does it makes sense to DIY it? That depends on the goal and the project.

    I appreciate your channel and what I've learned from you. Wow, I guess I'm a level 10. I'm retired and I'm building my own house in a 30'X60' steel building using structural steel from Clark Dietrich. Yes, I drew up my plans for the plot, buildings, septic and framing on a cheesy CAD program. I have my own tractor with bucket, forks and backhoe. I've already installed my septic tank, drain lines and effluence line approved by the County Inspector. I have most of my interior framing up and I'm working on hanging the hat channel for the ceiling. So far, I've done all the septic and interior framing by myself. Yes, it's a lot of work. I can't say that my research was one to one or 50 hours for each 50 hours worked. More like 4 hours to each 50 hours worked. There's so much more to do. After seeing the drywall horrors in the house I'm currently living in, storing my stuff, my drywall work is impeccable. Drywall is a long way off at this point. I want to have the pluming, gas, and electric lines in the house for the inspection prior to drywalling. I contacted the electric coop and they said I could run a line from the current meter which is about 90' away from the house. I'm betting the line to the meter, previously installed for a manufactured home, is 2-0 and I'll need at least 4-0 line to my house at that distance. Fun, fun, fun.

    Great great video. I'm a contractor, and I agree with everything except I'd move tile and HVAC/plumbing/electrical to a higher difficulty level. Although anyone can install tile, installing it so that it's pleasing to the eye, and functions well for the long run requires a bit more skill and knowledge. As far as all the mechanical and electrical, I think that the risk of doing something incorrectly that will be hidden inside walls, is a bit higher than what is represented here. I love your channel! Cheers!

    • @tay13666
      @tay13666 Před 2 lety +1

      I think his rating on mechanicals is pretty accurate. With the addition of the permits and inspections that he mentioned. For the most part, the work isn't hard. It's dirty, uncomfortable, and time consuming, but the basic adding a light, or receptacle, or moving a sink isn't hard. And a signed off inspection will make sure it was done correctly, and up to code before the wall is closed up.
      Most of the issues come from homeowners or handy men that don't know what they are doing, and do it anyway with no permit and leave it for someone else to discover.

      Whoever wired the 1970 addition decided to use the ground wire in the romex to carry load :o
      Yeah, instead of running 12-3 for the double switch for the two ceiling fixtures in the kitchen, they used 12-2 and tied the ground wire to one of the hot pieces of knob & tube.
      Thank goodness it was only a single light fixture and didn't burn the damn house down. Especially since the switch is in a metal box.

    Thanks for your video. My son bought his first house. Turns out the structure was toe nailed to an old, outdated chimney. The house was literally being held up by a handful of nails in masonry. They hired a structural engineer who recommended they go get floor jacks immediately and reinforce the joists. Then he recommended the appropriate steps to permanently fix the problem. Worth. Every. Penny. (yes. The house was inspected by a professional who missed it)

    • @MBarram
      @MBarram Před rokem

      It's a misconception of many that a house inspector before purchase is going to look into the actual structure of the house (foundation and beams are often not visible). The inspection is a visual and they will point out several things unfortunately home buyers lay too much trust in these reports. Don't get me wrong though they are often a good indicator.
      Always inspect main drainage pipes and vents in addition to the visual inspection and have a look at the roof if you can see any sagging... This give you a good idea where you are at... Any further inspections need smaller destruction testing which sellers very rarely agree too. If in doubt make a lower offer or walk away

    Thank you Jeff. It sure makes everything in prospective.
    I still feel like it is missing something in the videos though. For instance if you want to tackle LVP over tile. Haven't seen how to manage the finish to the dishwasher (vertical or horizontal board?). Most dishwasher rest on the concrete itself and adding 1/2 inch on the tile in front of it may prevent the dishwasher to come out if you need to change it. What to do then?
    Another instance. If you want to add a door to a den, I'd the walls are too far to fit a regular 32x80 door frame so you have to extend the drywall and frame it. So you have to cut the tiles to do so or can you just rest the frame on the tiles? Depending on the answer it may switch a level 2 project to a 5 and we sure need to know to gauge if we can tackle it ourselves or not.
    Maybe a scale with gotchas would be a better idea. If somehow we turn a remodeling project into a renovation project down the road because we didn't think further than the scale you mentioned we may end up in more troubles we bargain for.🤔
