Just got a 2020 F150. Got it with the 3.3L, for what I need it has plenty of power. Not loading more than 1000lbs and never pull any trailer. Plus, no worries about the problems they had with the EcoBoost. Most people wanting the EcoBoost want it for the wrong reasons, they are thinking they have a race truck and act that way.

Just purchased a brand new XL with the 3.3L, very happy I didn't go turbo, less issues, and in reality I knew mileage would come out less.
I barely bought the truck, every Ford dealer I went to all looked at me funny when I said " Give the most striped down, rubber floor and vinyl seat, non EcoBoost, Supercab." Found one closely optioned to what I want, but I think sticker had about 3 options total, not bad. Only truck on 4 lots like that, the sales manager had to look hard for it, as everybody wants a soccer mom truck. 🤣

Yes, Its kinda funny how the dealers have 100s of the same trucks (in 4 variants) all over their lots. You want something different, you need to hunt for that one dealer in your area that orders some different vehicles. I was on the fence between the 3.3 and the 2.7EB as well. I test drove both and ended up going with the 2.7, the 3.3 felt like kind of a slug by comparison. It’s only a 35hp difference between the two engines but it seemed like a much wider gap after driving them both. Plus, I’m averaging about 23 mpg out of the EB. Got a lifetime warranty from the dealership I bought it from, so I’m not sweating the extra complexity of the 2.7 too bad.

I do about 20 MPG with my 2.7 Ecoboost in winter. Maybe if you have a heavy foot, you would have less MPGs that with the 3.3, but that's not enough for me to opt for a less powerful engine. My father has the 3.5 base engine that was available in 2015, and the difference between his truck and mine is very clear. I love the power of the 2.7 Ecoboost and I think it's worth it to get maybe a little bit less MPG to get a truck that is very responsive. When I was driving my father's truck, I was sometimes getting very upset when I wanted to pass other cars and the engine didn't respond. Even on Sport Mode, I didn't really feel the difference. But now that I'm driving my 2.7, it's a totally different world, where I don't always stay on Sport mode because that engine on Sport mode is so agressive that it becomes annoying to drive as the gas pedal becomes extremely sensible.
Another factor is the torque. When I was driving the 3.5 base engine on cruise control at 75 MPH on the highway, it had to downshift for every hill to climb, while my 2.7 downshifts very rarely.

    • @zzgeorgezdane8559

I agree the power difference and capability between these 2 engines is extremely different. If I only owned one truck- it would certainly be one of the more powerful F150 engines than the base. But I have a 3.5EB and a 5.7L hemi in my other 2 trucks, so this particular truck I bought was for economy in both purchase price and overall fuel economy. Update- Since this video was purchased I have sold that truck after 22k miles, and last month I purchased a 2019 F150 XL Reg Cab w 3.3 non turbo. Any comments bout the 10 speed?

Use eco mode in the 2.7 it really makes a huge difference in the throttle response which keeps you out of it. Awkwardly enough the wet/snow mode does an even better job. It makes the truck feel like a N/A if you’re that concerned with it.

There’s an old saying, use the right tool for the job.
I had a 2.7. Excellent motor, very good design. It’s been dual injection since 2018. It was with a 4x4 super crew F150 302a 2019.
But I realized I almost never used the back seats, never used 4x4, and hardly tow anything. Only really tow my 2600 lbs pontoon boat a few hours drive here and there.
So with that, I got sick of the high payment and looked to downgrade.
    I now have a 2021 F150 regular cab 2wd long bed 101a high.
The bed is very useful. The 3.3 is the right tool (engine) for this truck.
Very acceptable acceleration, and pulls my pontoon at an acceptable speed too. The 10 speed shifts vastly improved with the new truck compared to my 19.
Though some have said their super crew 4x4 3.3 is fine, I wouldn’t want that heavy of a truck with the 3.3. But for a regular cab truck it’s very ideal, especially if you don’t tow a lot.
With my 2.7 I had to use premium to get good mileage. But with the 3.3 I use 87 octane and get 22-23 mpg average mostly not highway.

I've been looking at a 2022 with the 3.3. I thought I'd need an Ecoboost, but I also have a 12 valve. And I doubt I'd ever tow much more then 6k with a half ton anyways. But going across country and touring the island, I think the 3.3 is a good choice for me. I currently have a 2020 Hyundai Ioniq EV. You want to talk about slow? My electric car is slow. It's very efficient however. And I'm not built for speed. I've never had the need to tear out of a stop light as fast as I could. I'm strongly considering the 3.3 due to it's simplicity as well. Mechanics really love them because there so damn easy to work on. The flex fuel thing doesn't really work out here in Canada, but I can see some appeal to it if you live in a corn state and can access E85. But there's only like 4 stations in Canada that serve E85. And I'm pretty sure there all in B.C. I could be wrong on that though. But the flex fuel thing is a nice thought.

I live in a very busy town and get 19 MPG’s in city and 24 on Highway at 75 MPG’s with an oversized cap. For me, the 2.7L is the best of both world’s, economy and power when needed. The 2.7L is a beast. The 3.0L eco boost is based on the 2.7L. I truly believe the 3.3L has its place in the market. 290 HP and 260 lbs of torque is plenty of power for a work truck and towing 5,000 lbs. Peace

@@ericpeterson4038 Thank you for sharing your experience on this. I figured the 3.3 would be the way I’d like to go being more simple and enough power for my needs.
Towing a pontoon and trailer at 2500-3000lbs is a big factor in my consideration.

Old post I realize but I just towed about 7000 lbs with a trailer and car on it with a 3.3 for about 150 miles. I didn't have working brakes on the trailer so I didn't exceed 60 mph, but the truck handled it fine. Was towing out of hills that are getting ozarkish when I started, up to more roll8ng stuff by the end but it only really struggled and hit 2nd gear a couple times. Got 13.5 mpg pulling. That was in a 2018 crew cab 4x4. It held 60 mph the whole time I told it to. Parked it back in the son in laws driveway without trailer at 24.9 mpg. I liked it enough and liked the fuel economy enough I'm looking to buy one for myself.

Sounds like you bought a 3.3L and are trying to convince yourself you made a good purchase. Unfortunately, you are not considering the following:
Resale value of the 2.7L will be significantly higher. The 2.7L is the highest demand motor for the F150.
Also I live in Houston and currently I get 19.5 mpg in STOP and GO traffic crawling along at 30 mph at 5pm with my 2.7L. I get about 25 mpg on the freeway.
As for the 10 speed transmission, you should do more research. Chevrolet and Ford went in on the research and development together for that transmission to ensure it was rock solid! There are 3.5L EcoBoost trucks with slicks on them running in 10s in the 1/4 mile on the stock transmission with the turbo turned up to higher PSI. I guarantee you if you leave the engine stock and don't tune it, that transmission will last a long time, especially with only the 2.7L beating on it, because it had to be designed to handle the HP and torque from the 3.5L EcoBoost. So its over engineered for the 2.7L.
The 2.7L is a $500 up charge option over the 3.3L. Look up used 2018 F150s, and the 3.3L versions are selling for at least $4,000 less than the 2.7L. Clearly the 2.7L, despite only being a $500 option, holds its value far better than the 3.3L.

Calm down there he got rid of his 3.3 for an older 3.5 eco boost. Check his other videos.
I have the 3.3 but I'm not in the mood to argue with you. So happy you love your 2.7

@@brooks323 Its not just me who loves it, this report (from 2017) says it all, and the gap has got even wider since this report:
"Heading into 2018, Ford’s truck marketing manager Todd Eckert tells Automotive News that the 2.7-liter EcoBoost will be the most popular F-150 engine followed by the 3.5-liter EcoBoost. Together, they’ll claim 65 percent of all F-150 sales, leaving 10 percent for the new entry-level 3.3-liter, and roughly 25 percent for the five-point-oh."
So clearly the MAJORITY of F150 owners are happy with their 2.7L EcoBoost. Heck even the 5.0L is over twice as more popular than the 3.3L.
Just saying, trying to make a case for the 3.3L being the "best" when clearly it's by far the least popular engine, is like trying to list the "pros" of taking the ugliest girl in school to prom. You are not fooling anyone but yourself.
