Because of you, I bought many of these this spring. Agree mostly. Poets Wife is my favorite scent. Alexandra of Kent is close second, and is my favorite overall rose thus far. Gabriel Oak is only a slight step down from these. Generous Gardener has not bloomed yet but it is coming soon. Munstead Wood is on order. I have not had the pleasure of smelling any of these others in your top 10. 😂
I would imagine Silas Marner, and Eustacia Vye would have to be just outside top 10, as they are both quite fragrant and up there with Gabriel Oak in my view. Claire Austin and Olivia Austin do not have as much scent as I thought they would, but are just fine and they flower unbelievably. Tess of D'ubbervilles has a decent scent. Lady of Shallott has a weak fragrance but I love her flowers. The Pilgrim had a very good scent when it bloomed, but nowhere near the top 10. Teasing Georgia is not blooming yet, but I got them for a huge discount bc they were struggling. Just got a struggling Emily Bronte as.well. I have been busy lol.

Lady Emma Hamilton… the fragrance!!!!! Such a nicely shaped shrub as well… but it’s not an easy rose to take care of. It died on me this year. I was heart broke until now😢
And of course Gertrude Jekyll… Such an easy Rose as well… it just grows and flowers. Always the first to flower and the last to finish…
Princess Kent, it does have a nice scent… but no where on the level of the above two!
Thank you for a great review! I’d like to add Jude the Obscure, Emily Brontë, Abraham Darby and Boscobel - their fragrances are really nice and strong and my favorites along with Princess Alexandra and Munstead Wood.
I’m surprised Gabriel Oak didn’t make it to top ten, it’s one of the strong perfumed ones in my garden, even stronger than Kent. Thanks for your wonderful review.
Could you please make a video with a tour of your garden, I would love to see the rose bushes in their entirety so I can plan which ones will fit my upcoming bed.

Jude and Windermere are my favorite DA scents. Do you ever review popular older DA roses? Like Evelyn and etc. maybe you can offer dupes or similar newer options. Just a suggestion. I look forward to your videos every day!
Hi there, i can recommend Evelyn very highly if you don't have it, mine gets half a day sun from 6 am till noon ans does Clusters of Flowers, her very fruity strong scent is one of die best ones to me...her winterhardiness in a pott is very good, no damage so far in Germany and we do get - 12 in Winter...🤷🏼♂️

Lady Emma Hamilton and Royal jubilee are the first David Austin roses that I bought around 10 years ago, plus Gentle Hermione, all three of them have strong and lovely scents, especially Gentle Hermione. Would love to hear your review about Royal Jubilee and Gentle Hermione. They perform splendidly in my garden!

I love fragrant roses, however I prefer roses that continually bloom or are good repeaters. I am not fond of winter, so I really like to fill my home with roses as much of the year as possible. While it’s not the true fragrance of a particular rose, I can spritz them with my favorite perfumes or scents. That works very well.
I have 3 from your list - Alexandra of Kent, Scepter'd Isle and Munstead Wood and agree their scents are glorious. Am loving Emily Bronte too this year- she's into her second summer now and is really coming into her own. She gets a bit floppy in a high wind so I've had to give her some support but her scent is beautiful and she lasts quite well in a vase too.
I really enjoy your videos Ben. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience. May I too ask you to list the roses that are the most healthy as I try to avoid spraying anything these days.

Thank you for your videos Ben I am looking to get more David Austin’s in the future . I recently have gotten into gardening after buying my first home . I decided this year I wanted to get some roses . I did some research online and have learned about all the different types of roses and care . When I stumbled upon David Austin roses I was in love ! I just got my first rose ever a month ago and chose “ golden celebration “ . I am starting it in a container but plan on planting it . I worry about the heat and humidity here in Tennessee ,but the rose seems to be doing good and recently got its first buds. I’m so excited for them to open 😁
Hi Ben thanks for uploading the video was very useful. Please would you kindly do a masterclass on climbing roses in terms of care and maintenance, e.g how do we train against a fence/ arch/ pergola or obelix. When do we prune and how. Any other tips you can think of. Also grateful if you could do a video reviewing the David Austin climbing roses and where they would be best suited according to their height etc. Thanks a lot.

This video was SO important to make. Thank you most graciously. David Austin has so many beautiful roses and I have 14 in my basket on their website, but know I have to narrow it down. I am USA zone 6 and will be adding exactly 5 roses for 2023. As a curious person I am wondering if you have ever thought of doing a You Tube video on "starting your rose collection in the garden"; that is, what does one choose to plant next to another color wise? Are there rules for this? I want my new rose beds to be pleasing to the eye.

I was able to order Lady Emma Hamilton, PAOK, mill on the floss, the generous gardener, scarbourogh fair, WOH, and munstead wood for spring of 2023. I’m super excited. I have to move two Olivas I planted in summer from 3 gallon pots to make room for my most recent order. I have 2 questions:
1. Have you made a video about transplanting roses (I don’t want to kill them)
2. Out of your top 10 roses on your video which one would you place next to a sitting area that is strong enough to smell without sticking your nose in the bloom?
Hi I’m afraid I have not made a video of how to transplant a rose but I would strongly suggest that you leave this until your plants are completely dormant you either do this in November or in late February early March
The roses that are going to fill the air with the fragrance are going to be a Harlow Carr, Lady Emma hamilton, The poets wife, Munstead wood, Crown Princess Margarita, and the country Parson
Would your advice be to leave the Olivas there and not move them at all? I am after something that has a wonderful scent since this will be right next to our patio. This is why I want to move them-they are pretty but no scent really. I have a poets wife I considered moving also when dormant too. @@the_gardenerben
@@Sunshine-xt1vb No not at all if they’re in the wrong place or you want to put something where they currently are do make sure you move them Olivia is not particularly centred in my opinion just make sure that it’s gone to sleep and dropped all of its leaves before you consider taking it up and remember roses have very deep root systems you need to go down at least 24 inches

This is the video I've been searching for all my life. Thank you so much! I just found a rose plant named "Discovery" at a local plant store. I'm blown away by the fragrance and deeply cupped, pink blooms. It's a highly underappreciated rose that I think you might like though it's not by David Austin. So far, it's the best smelling rose I've ever enjoyed. I did buy Munstead Wood this year though, so we will see how she compares. Thanks for the outstanding video.

I had a David Austin called Cressida a few years back. It was the most amazing rose I have ever smelled.

Why does gentle Hermione not make it into the list. I have PoK.. magareta .. gertrude… Hermione is the best in term of fragrance ! May be like you said everyone had different sense perception :). Thanks for your informative video ❤️

For your video, it would be great to hear comments about the quality of scent, intensity and projection so folks can choose based on what they want to prioritize.
I planted a new garden this year with DA roses all chosen in large part for fragrance. My favorite scent is the classic strong damask, which I especially like if carried on the breeze. After other factors were considered, I ended up with Harlow Carr, Desdemona, The Awlnwick Rose, Tess, as well as Venessa Bell, Bathsheba and two Lichfield Angels. The last three have other than damask fragrances. So far, although doing well, none of them have been exhibiting very much fragrance in our warm dry summer. I am hoping that this is because it is only their first year.
Should I expect much fragrance increase as these roses mature?
Which DA rose has the strongest old rose (damask) fragrance? Is is Gertrude Jekyll? She was top of my list because of reports of strong damask fragrance, but was unavailable this year.

Thank you for your comment and best of luck with your new garden yes you can expect fragrance to build as the plants reach maturity in a second and third years in my opinion Harlow and Carr Tess of the D’Urbervilles are the only roses you have mentioned grown for their fragrance the others on your list have a slight smell but I wouldn’t call it heavy
@@the_gardenerben It is interesting that you didn’t find Gertrude Jekyll had strong fragrance. Many people said it was the most fragrant DA rose.

Hi! I am not sure what damask really is but I do have Gertrude Jekyll and she smells like a real nice rose back in my childhood. Honestly how I ended up with her (before knowing anything about DA roses) is I went to the nursery and smelled all the lit blooming roses looking for one that would have a very nice wholesome smell from my childhood when my grandma would gather the light pink tea rose petals and dry them or press them with a whole lot of sugar and we’d use either one in our tea. Best stuff on Earth if you want a glimpse of Heaven! 🥰 GJ’s petals retain the beautiful scent after being dried etc unlike many other good smelling roses I’ve experimented with.

What would you say is the best shrub rose? One that bushes nicely and doesn't go too leggy. I'm not sure if you've done a best shrub series or not I'm looking through now. 😊
You probably want to watch my top 20 , the top 20 David Austin is in my humble opinion and he contains one climber

My Princess of Alexandria of Kent is my ugliest rose bush. It is skinny, scraggly and shoots horizontal branches, and I have three planted 18 inches apart in a triangle, as recommended by DA. The flowers are huge and gorgeous so I don't think I'll shovel prune just yet. I'm might plant another complimentary rose on each side to hide it. Any advice? Every other rose bush is gorgeous but not her. Please be my therapist! I can't watch you enough.

Ben, What do you of the Scepter’d Isle as a rose tree? Would you recommend it?
I have never seen it as a standard or tree rose, but it’s a very high performing rose so I assume it will do very well

Thank you Ben i lost my seance of smell with covid a year ago i still enjoy the beauty though .I lost my brother on New years Eve and managed to get a brother cadfael can you give me any advice on this rose Thanks
I’m very sorry to hear about the loss of your brother brother. Cadfael is an incredibly fragrant rose hopefully strong enough for you to smell. It produces very large goblet or chalice shaped blooms which are a very strong candy pink colour please to watch out for signs of black spot and mildew on this rose. It is a little bit prone you’ll need to make sure you pay special attention to your watering and mulching.

I have princess Alexandra but the flower is not even close to yours. I was wondering if I was duped 😱. I also have princess Margaretta which at least makes two on your list. Can you rate brother cadfael?.
All take a few seasons to reach full size so give them time

Im in a trouble l dont know what l have 😄 shalott or hamilton, all l know they look same and smells soooo good 🙂 l just remember that l got decade ago and always bloom so nice, but l forgot The name on the box,
The lady of Shallotte has very little or no fragrance. The lady Emma Hamilton will never start blooming until at least the end of June, or beginning of July and wallflower all the way through into the back end of October and is very highly fragranced the stems on lady, Emma Hamilton are also bright ruby red purple if that helps

Munstead Wood has been retired by David Austin along with Darcey Bussell and LEH😢
I’m fully aware of that this video is over 18 months old and was replaced last June with a new top 20 in many parts of the world. The retired roses from the English collections are still available on the David Austin Licence. In total, they retired 12 roses in 2022.
Crown Princess Margareta is being discontinued by David Austin, along with Tess and The Lady Emma Hamilton.

I have bought roses from Styles Roses, they're licenced to sell David Austin Roses, and on their website for both Crown Princess Margareta and Lady Emma Hamilton it says that these roses are being discontinued by David Austin
