  • Thanks for watching this clip taken in 1989, when the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad was running two ex- Canadian Pacific G5 locomotives of Jack Showalter. #1238 and #1286. Showalter had an agreement with the newly-formed Scenic Railroad Development Corporation (SRDC) in 1988, to operate his trains over their ex-Western Maryland trackage between Cumberland and Frostburg. Jack Showalter hosted trains there until 1991, when disputes with the SRDC became insurmountable. Showalter moved the Allegany Central's equipment to back Virginia were they ran a short time. Increased insurance requirements led to the termination of service, and most of the equipment was stored out of service in Staunton. Jack Showalter passed away in December 2014.
1238 and 1286 were stored in Virginia under tarps for several years, until they were sold to a private owner from Alberta in 2015 after Showalter's passing. Both steam locomotives arrived on the Prairie Dog Central Railway in Winnipeg, Manitoba in September 2015.
Video was taken with a Panasonic VHS Camcorder between Cumberland and Frostburg Maryland on the ex-Western Maryland Railroad.
Please be sure to check out my many other classic clips from the 1970's up to today. There is sure to be something for everyone.
    Thank you, God Bless

What a treat this short video was Jack! Thank you for allowing us to see it!
That engineer was running this train like a boss, I'm sure he's been running this engine for some time before this filming. Loved the fans gathering their pennies after the turn around.

Hi again Jack. A really great railfanning video. Appearantly that Engineer knew what was doing and got it up to Frostburg without stalling. I got a chuckle from all those people picking up their flattened penny's after the locomotive got off the turntable. Wonder if people do that anymore?

It was unreal how many people were picking up penny's. When 1238 was pulling on to the turntable, you could only see some putting them on the rail. Yah, the engineer did a fine job moving that thing up the grade to Frostburg.
