- Reading & Northern 425, the gutsy 4-6-2 "Pacific" type steam locomotive leads a fantastic journey through the hills and valleys of northeast Pennsylvania. Filmed over several autumn days in October, 2021, 425 wore multiple whistles during that time, battling grades, arriving and departing stations, and impressing a multitude of onlookers with a loud and majestic display of fine early 20th century machinery.
You can ride this train, by viewing events and tickets at:

As of November 2022, 425 has undergone the last excursion for now, replaced by recently restored 4-8-4 number 2102. You can view this mighty steam engine in service here:

Many thanks to those from the Reading & Northern railroad that continue to make this possible!

Amazing vid. That first bit with the oiling deserves a Grammy award.
Absolutely stunning and magnificent! Not only did you capture a timeless train in a timeless landscape you showed the train in the context of that gorgeous countryside perfectly!
I really don't have the words. This isn't just a rail video, it's a work of cinematic art! 🥲👍
100% perfect. Amazing. Shots you are a true ARTIST. the angles you use are perfect and better than anything I have ever seen before. Perfection.

Wow! What coverage! Enjoyed it very much. 🙂
Thanks Joe! That means a lot coming from you, cannot wait to see your production!
Incredible. Every shot deliberate, not a single second wasted, every frame a painting. Utterly beautiful the whole way.
I feel like I just watched and old movie. Beautifully done!
World class production, you should be very proud of yourself mate 😊 Hello from New Zealand.
On of the best steam videos I have ever watched and I've seen a few! Not your typical steam video. I was lucky enough to ride behind the 425 back in the late 80's or early 90's. Looks better than ever. Thanks for the great
camera work, Excellent production!!!
Some of the most beautiful chuffing sounds I've ever heard.
Beautifully and imaginately ely filmed.
BEAUTIFULY SHOT!!! Thank you so much for doing this!!!
My son really loves this video, so I have seen it a lot 😂 and I have to say it’s really well done, meditative and beautiful. I love the part where the camera catches some of the Amish passengers sitting in the train and looking out the window. It’s a nice moment!
This is one of the best made videos I think I have ever seen! Thank You.🚂🚂👍

Produce it all to DVD most excellent work! Very nicely done! Reminds me of the Pentrex Days and MarK I Video
I really love the shot at 36:40 with the train slowly curving towards the camera while a couple kisses in the background. This is honestly some of the best train photography I've ever seen.
I love how you don’t just film the train going by, but you also film the little things. That’s why this is my favorite video of #425 ever! Amazing job!
I love to watch old steam engines.
Excellent experience and capture chase of this historic train and beautiful shots,Thanks for sharing this with the audience.

That was beautifully filmed! Loved ever shot with the fall colors and the magnificent 425!
The video made the 425 come alive!
I loved the river shots and the Wall St. crossing at the 20:07 mark Thanks for your great effort 👍
If there existed an Academy Award for the most outstanding, inspiring, best videography of a stunning steam train in beautiful surroundings this creation would have the gold statue. 🏆🏆🏆
Andy’s Boston & Maine 6 Chime Is Amazing. Great Video.
Absolutely mesmerizing! Watching the Reading & Northern 425 chug along through the autumn scenery feels like stepping into a different era. Thanks for capturing and sharing this nostalgic journey!
What an amazing video! A real work of art 🙂
This Railroad must be operating in the Green. It just looks taken care of. All the track, and grades are so well done. And this Steam Engine and cars are beautiful. Great photography as well. Great production 👏.

Tourism and hauling more then coal will do that.

The reading 6 chime is S tier for steam whistles
This is amazing! What an incredible job! Thanks for uploading 🚂 We've never made it all the way to Jim Thorpe so this was cool to see 🙂
Interesting/informative/entertaining. Excellent photography job enabling viewers to better understand what & how the R.R. employees commence with their daily activities. Enjoying this presentation from the comfort zone of my computer room. Along the " Space Coast " 🚀of Florida 🐊🐊. Wishing viewers& the crew of ( 425 ) a safe/healthy/prosperous ( 2024 )🌈🎉😉.
Amazing !!! You have the most artfully composed shots. They are so good that it gives the impression of being effortless, so natural. The fact is, I think, that each is very carefully planned and executed. It just works ! James.
Nice video. I appreciate the amount of time and money you have put into your equipment, skill, and everything else. I love the beautiful sound of the whistle and the landscape in the background as the locomotive goes chugging up the hill. Wonderful job on the sound, and the video overall. I love it!
I'm gonna chase the 425 for the last time today !
Well, I was going to compliment you on the quality of your videography, scene framing, focusing on something small but relevant and then widening the view to include the train or some other item of interest. Framing the entrance to a tunnel off center and then panning into it, etc. Your attention to detail it superb. However, there are some things that I felt were left wanting. I would like to know some information about what I'm seeing. Where is this railroad? Why is the locomotive blue? How long is that long trestle and when was it built? There was an awesome stone viaduct. Where is it, who built it and when. What is the history of the locomotive and cars. I don't know about others but, I think that this type of information would be a welcome addition to a fantastic video. Providing this information would certainly require some research which you may not have the time on inclination to do. Then a script and narration would need to be done. If you have a terrible voice like I do, you might want to get some assistance. Don't get me wrong. I loved this video. The quality and preparation that went into is evident and way above average. I simply think that if left me wondering about the things that I have mentioned and their addition might take this video to even new heights. Thanks for making it available. I look forward to watching more of your videos.
Couldn’t help but notice the bucket on the backhoe loading coal at Jim Thorpe. Made by TAG Manufacturing in Chattanooga, Tennessee. They’re one of our customers we service at the Tennessee Valley Railroad. I’ve delivered many a flatcar loaded with steel for them to make those buckets with!

Vídeo excelente! Trens são espetáculo à parte! Lindas imagens... A edição ficou perfeita. PARABÉNS! 🇧🇷
The whistle with the echo at 16:07 is straight up haunting.
I love the bells on steam locos, they don't sound as good on the diesels :(
Very nice!
Bellissimo video la locomotiva è qualcosa di molto interessante il viaggio deve essere stato molto affascinante 🆗👍
Your films are looking exactly like movie scenes with your camera or yours!
Imaginately (!)... And very atmospheric. Not the usual boring lineside stuff!
5:57 one hell of a lot of loose spikes ! 😮
Nice
Well done !
WOOW
GREAT vid!!! Can someone please identify the different whistles with time stamps for where each new sequence comes in? Thanks!
Awesome, 2102 could fill in the excursions for 425 until whenever she comes back from her FRA 1472 Day Boiler Inspection, maybe 425 can lead the 2102 first time!
40:32 The Sound of Steam...
Wow!! Seeing those shots in the rain with the deep maroon paint coming through on the coaches...beautiful. I wonder if theyd consider repainting the 425 to match? A solid maroon with gold lettering. Thatd be beautiful
15:48 this shot is so great. Especially when it’s just wailing in the distance.
She’s small than tank engine 💙💙
yea the bridge scene is awsome, but this speeding 19:09 infront of the camera is just MMMMMMH
🇮🇳💐🍁🥰 I love you steam locomotive 🍁💐🥰🌹🇮🇳
It nice ❤
What kind of camera or film grain did you use for this because it's similar to what I saw in Rocky Mountain Express regarding film quality which was very good and brought out a lot of fine detail
This was not shot on film like the Rocky Mountain Express is, but actually a small chip digital camcorder, specifically the Panasonic X1500 in 24p 422 mode. The grain is actually produced inherently from the smaller chip size because it can only absorb so much light on the sensor, especially one you start to brighten and grade shots in post processing. The biggest downside to small sensors aside from low light performance is there inability to capture depth of field.
Nice locomotive 🚂
well done
You really took the artistic shots to a new level with this, and I like it. Was this all 24p? Kind of looks like it so far. I haven't finished yet, but I really like what you've done with it.
Is this on the Panasonic 1500?
My grandfather worked for the Illinois central railroad as a fireman.
great
The engineer be like "now THIS is what I'm used to, like the good ol' days"
it has a Boston and Maine 6 chime,.
