This song is FANTASTIC! What a song from their awesome debut album and a double record album at that!!!
I always thought "purples" was a joke. Instead of playing the blues, Chicago thought they would play another color. PS: The "I am he as" line is a reference to the Beatles' I Am The Walrus.
"I am Iron Walrus!"

He's blue, but he's angry too; hence, the purples. Lol, I had to look it up; I thought I remembered this song being called 'South Carolina Purples'. Nice upload.
I’ve been a fan since album #1. I bought their first album with my lawn mowing money. Over 50 years later listening still gives me goosebumps. They were so far ahead of their time and had so much talent many people just couldn’t grasp their music, it was to intense. Their music will live on forever. As time go by more people are starting to get it. Their music has so much depth and layers some people will never enjoy it. We are not talking about Johnny Cash, Elvis or early Beatles here.
i enjoyed that. Energetic and gutsy with enough trimmings to keep it fresh and entertaining. I also went downstairs to make a cuppa and it was still riffing away when i returned. All that was lacking was some late 70s Pat Travers Band Funking it up ( Gettin Betta) or multi time-sig rock n roll (Heat in The Street). Diolch!
I took it as solid blues. Turned out to be a great tune for dancing while sorting laundry. Good morning Justin. : D
For an earlier influential drum solo featuring double bass drums, see Ginger Baker's 13 min. "Toad" solo on the live portion of Cream's 1968 album "Wheels Of Fire".
That's a great reaction to a great song. The riff may may standard blues-rock but what they do with it is magical. As an older person, I am amazed at how younger people are reacting to the music from my formative years - it is heart warming so thanks! In this song I love the slight homage to The Beatles with the quote from "I Am The Walrus", and the riff that comes just after it seems to have inspired Black Sabbath's "Iron Man" riff. Music is great!
Spot on with seeing the blues-soaked roots of proto-metal here. But in 1969, this was not as ahead of the curve as you say, considering Jimi Hendrix in the same territory for several years by then. In particular, this riff reminds me of Spanish Castle Magic, a song from Axis: Bold As Love from 1967 (an album you did a couple of tracks from, but really should do the rest of). In fact, so much so, that the purple in the title might be a direct nod to Jimi, who was so known for Purple Haze? And as @NotData (and probably others) mentioned, you missed a line directly pulled from I Am The Walrus (the opening line in fact: "I am he as you are he as you are me and we are all together."), from Magical Mystery Tour, the Beatles album I'm pulling for you to do after The White Album. Nice reaction, as usual.
Chicago toured with Jimi Hendrix, who had the hit Purple Haze; this may have been their tribute to nit only Jimi, but also rhr Beatles, whose Sergeant Peppers album was an inspiration for them forming the band
Perfect song for the West Connecticut greys, with Chicago, you can play the rain away! Always love that sly reference to the Beatles. Thanks for going through one of my all time favorite albums, track by track, I'm reliving the youth, that I'll never get back! Peace & Love from the New England mud!
Possibly my favorite track on this album, don't know if it's early metal, but it sure makes my woofer's bounce more than anything else here with the volume cranked up. Love it! 🤠👍👍👍
Good point!
Super "Koool" isn't it Justin !! 👍
I'm so glad I grew up in the Best time for Rock Music !!! 🎶🎸🎹🎤🎺🥁🎼✌
I love healthy metal music!
Decent groove for this Monday morning, get a move on, groove on.
What’s the opposite of Southern California Purples, yellow matter custard, dripping from a dead dog’s eye.
S’all color theory…y’all.
Please one day watch the entire concert live at Tanglewood It is just so fantastic probably one of the best concerts that ever watched in my life and I've seen it a number of times it's so worth your time
An invigorating urban blues.
Justin, did you catch The Beatles’ “I Am the Walrus” reference? ("I am he as you are he as you are me and we are all together").
Just now lol!
@@JustJP Great ! 👍 If you ever have to do The Dukes of Stratosphear, I hope you listen to The Beatles' Magical Mystery Tour and other songs from that period before you start this XTC spin-off band, It will help !😉
Justin, I'm surprised the "I am the Walrus" line flew right by you. Normally you are very keen on those type of things.
I have an occasional miss 😉
I thought they used "purples" instead of "blues" because the emphasis on the repeated E minor 7th chord in the main riff was similar to Hendrix's emphasis on E7#9th on "Purple Haze". The way that chord is used also reminds me of Hendrix's song "Midnight" from the War Heroes album, or Cream's cover of "Outside Woman Blues".
Nice insights and thanks for sharing
... once again: If you like early Chicago, try The Flock! ;-) ...
Such a cool track
After reading all of the explanations of Purple, I'm almost embarrassed to say that my drug and alcohol addled brain thought it referred to Owsley acid. There was some pretty powerful hits called Purple Barrels floating around back then!!
This is the Chicago I liked.
I grew up in San Diego, where the TV meteorologists all had to learn the phrase, "today we had your usual early morning late night low clouds and fog." There was also a purple-ish haze that hung in the air over the water right up to the coast. I don't know if that's what they're referencing, but I've always thought so...
interesting, but considering the times... Drugs jumped to my mind. There was a particularly strong pot that grew with buds with a purple hue, 'purples. That's where my mind went :)
@jfergs.3302 Huh. I did not know that. I've never gotten to know ol' Mary Jane. My dad was always nervous when I went to a concert. "Isn't there a lot of pot smoking at those things?" "Yes, Dad." "Well, don't they try to make you smoke it?" "No, Dad. They offer it down the row. But they're content to take my toke when I tell them, 'No thanks.'"
But that's interesting.
@@jfergs.3302 The reference to drugs (purple hearts) is what also jumped out at me! But maybe we are looking too far...
@@a.k.1740Aye, maybe it was just the sky colour after all eh.
@@HabichiwoowooWell of course I didn't partake myself, but I had a friend who was a botanist who filled me in on the subject :)
Surprie, surprise. Seems Chicago had heard of that strange Teenie Bopper band from Liverpool,England; The Rutles or something like that. Time to get to know " I am the walrus" by Spooky Tooth. One of the best covers ever made.
Bog standard blues with some horns thrown in, and half decent geet solo. Pretty average. Now how's this for a segue... Re the beatles lines included, I think Adam Ant did it better. You should check out his tune 'Family Of Noise'. A.A. dipped into She Loves You, BTW. And that said, how his debut album (Dirk Wears White Sox) is still yet to appear on the channel I find rather perplexing 🙂
+1 for Adam and the Ants!
Never heard this mix of this before. The vocals seems much more aggressive, and there is something REALLY weird at 3:11 in your video where it almost seems the higher note he really sings is clipped by something, dear god I hope it isn't Autotune after the fact.
Did I hear you right? First you said this sounds like heavy metal then you said oh this sounds like Blues then you said a bit of Iron Maiden. Makeup your mind LOL. It sounds like Chicago to me. This is not heavy metal
Noise. Not the good kind, either. I had to stop the video half way through the sounds (I daren't call it 'music') because it was annoying me to no end.
