Album 1, Side 1 and Song 1 by Chicago is a song called "Introduction" written by Terry Kath. Great intro to the band.
A fantastic free form !
Terry Kath's playing is Pure. This is the definition of a Deep Cut. If you didn't own the album, you have never heard this.
I do remember this being a staple of the FM station I listened to at the time. This and I'm a Man. But I don't remember it ever being on AM radio.
This band is deep in my soul. Their early stuff was pure genius mixing Kath's guitar and vocals with the blaring horns. Funny how they couldn't stay CTA. Here in Chicago that was the transportation company! Sad when Kath died. I feel the band changed as they moved into the 80's. This was how I liked them!
Man, that ballads-all-day direction they went really made me crazy. I said it was useless crap. Cetera's bank account shows just how much I know. Still can't listen to it, though.
@@GoldTopSlinger How right you are!
I know we must acknowledge we're old but... regardless, it's still an "ouch!" moment for me when he comments that "Chicago" is one of his GRANDFATHER's favorite bands. A sobering moment for me. 🤔😀
One of my dad's favorites as well:)
Man, I don't remember this one. The great days of the band right here. I think you'd also be impressed by "Beginnings" (the long version) which is just classic.
Yup.
Beginnings is awesome.
I haven't heard this song in a good 50 years. My sister had this album & we played the heck out of it. I don't think this song was ever released as a single, but it was still very popular amongst those who had the album.
I agree with you. A lot of people hate the direction Chicago went in the 80s and beyond when they started to do pop ballads, but I like that; however, my favorite era was the Terry Kath years. This stuff is fire. I was going to suggest Poem 58 from this album but I did a search and see you already did it. I love the guitar in that one. This whole album is a banger. Terry Kath is an underrated genius.
I didn’t like the direction Chicago took in the 80’s. Once they got popular on MTV it was just fluff. However, Peter Cetera did have a perfect voice for pop songs and love songs. The song “No Tell Lover” from 1978 is probably their last great song where they still sounded like Chicago, and it was a massive hit. Still, nothing compares to the Terry Kath years.
Love this album!
I haven't even finished listening to the first time and I want to listen to it again
Not too shabby for a band's debut album!
I always loved the way Chicago intertwined the Horns into their music.
Good Stuff !
You've heard a line from "I am the Walrus" previously when you reacted to "Mrs. Robinson"..."Go Go G'Joob (Mrs. Robison).
Yeah back to CTA, so good to hear Kath playing… someday you could come back with the Tanglewood videos because this show also has a version of “It Better End Soon, 14 min man and it's mind blowing.
Liberation, another one where Terry Kath does some experiments with the sounds a guitar can make.
That whole album is great.
I just watched a great documentary on Terry Kath called "The Terry Kath Experience". It's produced by his daughter, who was 2 years old when Terry died. It's free on CZcams. Well worth the watch.
Hopefully you will get to "Saturday in the Park".
I saw it too. He was one hell of a man with a heart full of soul. Terry Kath may you rest in peace.💛
@@rodneygriffin7666 I'm a hockey fan. I loved that he was, too. Wore hockey jerseys in concert quite frequently. I was particularly impressed that he had a Chicago Cougars jersey from the old World Hockey Association.
I Am The Walrus by The Beatles. Must Listen.
@Firebird 7479 he was an Amazing guitarist and an amazing guy. We lost someone who was a true talent at a very young age.
Those guitar solos are so Terry. One of my first albums, lived close enough to hear WLS in Chicago, growing up, so I had to get this album. I did, and the second in one fell swoop. Bird noise here.
Time machine time, thanks man.
From OKC to CTA, pretty cool.
Guitar, bass, and organ are all unleashed on this track along with Robert Lamm's vocals. He cuts loose a lot more than on the smoother tracks he usually sings.
I use to love love love this song and this album I’m going to iTunes to restore my Chicago collection
Chicago was such a phenomenal jazz rock group. I didn't listen to them nearly enough, growing up. Wish I had. I've never even heard this song before, and I grew up playing the trumpet. I know, I know. Trust me, I know 😱🙂
It's funny you should mention Blood, Sweat & Tears. The story goes that Al Cooper, the producer, came out to L.A. to see Chicago Transit Authority at the Whiskey-A-Go-Go. They thought he was there to sign them with Columbia Records. Lets just say the band had "representation" back in Chicago that Cooper and the record label did not want to deal with, so Cooper went back to NY, auditioned a crowd of working musicians and put together his own R&B brass band and named it BS&T
there is a live in the studio track on this album called LIBERATION that is killer. A true JAM.
Other bands of this period and style with horns are Sons of Champlin, Tower of Power, Coldblood and Parliament.
This song never gets played, and it's one of my favorites.
Great choice, Daniel. Love early Chicago and Terry Kath. Thanks for doing this and do more please.
The true creator of Jazz Rock was Al Kooper, on his seminal first Blood Sweat & Tears album, after which he was kicked out of the band! Start with "I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know". He worked with Dylan, The Stones and hundreds more...
The "I am he as you are . . ." line is a quote from "I Am The Walrus" by the Beatles. I didn't know that until I heard the Beatles' song itself.
AWESOME HIDDEN NEVER PLAYED GREAT TUNE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ENJOY !!!!!!!!!!! One of my faves
"Questions 67 And 68", or go back to the beginning and do them one at a time. It doesn't need to be in one sitting, take your time.
No, not many bands used brass the way Blood Sweat and Tears or Chicago did. Chicago had a soul to their music, especially early. Unique and influential. Oh, and awesome!
Actually Chicago is the primary band that truly personified a “rock band with horns.” In many of their songs the horns provide the melody - not just the fills between the melody.
Always always always been my fave CTA song. It's not blues - its deeper (purples!)
Love that beatles section in this song
Once The Beatles finished their career with Abbey Road in 1969, I latched onto CTA and wow! South California Purples is my favorite track on the double disc and that is saying a lot as this body of work is smoking' hot! Thanks for playing and reviewing it.
WOW!! RIGHT!!
I loved this song
excellent
If you don’t like this song you don’t have a soul. I bought this album when it first came out. I used the money I earned from shoveling snow. I played it so much I wore it out. I have been a Chicago fan ever since. They were so far ahead of their time. Most of my friends didn’t care for Chicago in those days, it was beyond their comprehension. I played trumpet and loved guitar music, Chicago was a perfect fit. South California Purples is one of my favorite songs. Chicago will live forever!!
I bought this album in ‘72.Same year I first saw them live. You said your grandfather loved this album.OUCH!
Chicago is still touring and playing. They did a few quarantine uploads during lockdown with their new singer, which are pretty good. However, lately I'm actually preferring the covers put out by a group out of Russia and the Ukraine called Leonid and Friends. Their sound is spot on.
They're coming to the states and touring, and will be in Seattle. I'm sad I can't go; if the plague was not around, I would so grab tickets.
If you're comfortable with attending shows, Leonid and Friends will be in Atlanta on September 23rd.
Love it!!!!!
As close to a blues as Chicago got. I wished for this album for Christmas when I was twelve..1973. My brother knew how much I wanted to hear it. He disguised it in a box. One of the greatest surprises I ever received for Christmas. Thanks for posting this.
A deep track, "Hideaway" on Chicago VIII.
Great stuff.
It's really cool to see a young guy like you looking back at the amazing classic Chicago songs. The "Purples" in the title refers to the fact that it is fundamentally a blues song structure in a minor key. You know, purple is darker than blue. So the lyrics are blues, with the repeated word verses like a call and response from the blues origins. And Kath kills the guitar solo once again. Blues solos are supposed to evoke sadness and/or anger so they shouldn't be shredded, but rather have more feeling and sustained notes. When we're sad after all, we usually talk more slowly and with more emotion. Anyway, enjoyed your reaction and teach your friends about this awesome music!!
Day late, never got notification for this, not thrilled. Nonetheless, Terry Kath at his apex, with superb horn arrangements, Hendrix-like classic rock. Absolutely love when you cover music I only vaguely remember, it makes it fresh again. Great pick.
Cool that you like this incredible music. I guess I was around your age or even younger. Must have been 14-15 years old when I bought this album. Chicago, Blood sweat and tears, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, UFO, Uriah Heep, Jethro Tull, Black Sabbath etc. What a great time for music.
Cool reaction!
Your grandad's favorite bands? you just made me feel really old😄😄😄
Love you little Bro …Bobby T North side…De Paul U …grads!
Would love you to do "An Hour in the Shower" from their third album if you love Terry's voice and writing
One of the best showcases for Terry's voice was "It Better End Soon" off II. Has the added benefit of burning guitar and flute solos, too.
Unbelievable that the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame pissed all over one of the greatest bands for decades.
Not just your opinion it is the opinion of 95% rock fans feelings!
THE GREAT ROBERT LAMM WROTE THIS!!
If you liked this old Chicago blues tune you should check out Grateful Dead Easy Wind 8-30-70. The video is not great but it's good and the audio is excellent. It's a PBS broadcast from over 50 years ago. You get to see what the Dead looked like in 1970 with Ron "Pigpen' Mckernan belting out the blues and Jerry ripping on his guitar. I think you'll like it, I know I do.
Check out live "In the country" Terry at his best vocally.
Chicago Transit Authority was one of the first 2 or 3 records I bought over 50 years ago. Entire album was fabulous - it's too bad that the band's output got worse and worse over the years. This song sounded great on my first real stereo - Sherwood receiver, Elac turntable, and floor-standing 12" woofer house-brand speakers.
I was ain high school when this came out. I had only enough money to buy one album. It was a choice between this album or ARE YOU EXPERIENCED. Ichose Jimi.
OH TERRY!!
Back in their heavier days, before they went love ballads.
It's actually called Southern California Purples.
Try reacting to Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes, a south Jersey band that Bruce Springsteen blue printed his style on in the early days!
Here is the ultimate Chicago deep cut, and it's even on the same album. It's called "Listen", and it's also some pretty nifty riff rock.
I Am The Walrus. Goo Goo Ga Joob.
I am he as you are me and we are all together. John Lennon wrote those words.
You need to do "Poem 58" off this same album. It answers the question, "what would Terry, Peter, and Danny sounded like as a power trio." IMHO some of Peter Cetera's best bass work, perfectly paired with Terry having plenty of room to stretch out his chops. As I understand it, it's a great example of what these cats would have been like live in their starting days.
Poem 58
I actually have done that one in the past:)
Early Chicago is the best imo as well. Some of their 80s output are pretty good as _songs_, but so very different.
Are you btw well aquainted with Van Der Graaf Generator? Their music and incorporated saxophone playing is vastly different from the horn sections in Chicago or Blood Sweat and Tears, but still, it brings something similar to their music. And their earlier albums are among the best and most well known in 70s prog, so if you're not too familiar with them... you should probably consider giving them a chance :-)
After Chicago 12 I started to be somewhat disinterested because after Terry died it became the Peter Cetera show with less and less horns and more ballads! Ballads are ok every once in awhile. Color My World is amazing! My all time favorite Chicago song is Make Me Smile and In The Country from Chicago 2! Also the songs Now, What's The World Coming To, the whole Chicago 2 album, and more! Please consider reacting to these songs. I considered Terry Kath to be the soul of Chicago and whe he died Chicago became a good band instead of phenomenal! After Chicago 12 they had some great songs, but not really where I wanted to by the entire album! Jason Scheff did a wonderful job after Peter left, Stone Of Sysyfus is a great song!
For brass and vocals you still need to check out Chase.
Best version of this is live Toronto 1969. It's been in bargain bins on every format imaginable over decades. Sound quality is awful, but the performance is top notch
It’s a shame the band doesn’t clean up the sound on the recording of that concert with today’s digital technology and release it on cd.
Now check out Listen...same album
I know you reacted to this tune but this is a must watch live cut... actually the whole concert...
Watch "Chicago - 25 or 6 to 4 - 7/21/1970 - Tanglewood (Official)" on CZcams

Did you catch the reference to the Beatles?
Please sample some Rare Earth!
Once Terry passed then David Foster got hold of them it went down hill. He ruined them.
What was that - I mean the guidelines? As a 72 year old who's experienced CTA at their very beginnings? There were no "guidelines", so please respect what your "granddad's" idea of what our freedoms have always been about. Free Expression. I Am The Walrus (Beatles) is the lyric that you'd once heard previously in regard to this tune.
Early Chicago was the best! Sadly, this style of music lost popularity by the mid seventies. Later Chicago was still good but not the raw hard rock giant that was CTA.
