1. What's This World Comin To.
2. Sing A Mean Tune Kid
3. It Better End Soon
4. Woman Don't Want To Love Me
... undeniable Top Shelf tracks from this Terry Kath Era ensemble .
The next track on the album, "POEM 58" is nine minutes of PURE FUNK led by Terry Kath on guitar, Danny Seraphine on drums, and Peter Cetera on bass.
Jimi Hendrix saw them playing when they were known as "The Chicago Transit Authority" at the legendary Whisky a Go Go in LA. He went to their dressing room between sets and told them, "You guys have a horn section that sounds like one set of lungs, and a guitar player that's BETTER THAN ME! You wanna go on the road?" They said "yeah!" and became Jimi's opening act on a national tour of stadiums and arenas.
Poem 58 is my favorite song on an album that's full of great songs from start to end!
Incredible band with an incredible debut album.
I don't think I ever heard this song but the sound makes me remember the late 60's which I was fortunate enough to live my childhood in.
While Terry Kath was alive - particularly albums 1-7 - these sort of Masterpieces were the Rule , rather than the exception .
I always forget how great this album was, until I hear it again. Incredible music.
Their first album, Chicago Transit Authority is the best. There was a time when they could have gone with initials for their name: CTA much like MC5, SRC, GTR, etc. I think with each successive album they lost their magic and went for the pop top 40 hits.
Love the first 4 albums from Chicago. 3 double albums and a quadruple.
JP is about to be in the top 15 of youtube reactors blessed by reacting to Poem 58. I can't wait!!!!!
Haha ty AJ! Looking forward to more Chicago!
JP is already in my top 5 reactors! I'm sure he'll be amazed by Poem 58 when he gets to it. Edit: Whoops, I forgot this is from 9 months ago, JP has already reacted to Poem 58!
This is one of the songs that convinced my dad that Chigago was one of those wild acid rock bands. I had to keep reminding him that he was the one who gave the cassette to me (along with Chicago III) for Christmas.
This is actually a Chicago song I haven't heard before! Great!
Another Great song from Chicago's Debut album Justin, in truth the entire record is fantastic something very few bands could do with their 1st album !! 👍🎶🎸🎺🎹🥁🎷🎼✌
Nice message to this song -- I'm sure it's about Chicago paying their dues in clubs, hoping to get a fan base. The plea to listen has wide appeal to all struggling bands, because their audiences in night clubs are usually engaged in conversation, and lack any interest in trying to listen to their music.
Filthy good!
I love the horns!!
Happy Birthday Justin! Keep the good vibes going Buddy!
Amazing song amazing album. Haven’t heard this song in ages thanks JP
Hi Justin, One of my alltime fave albums. But like I said before: Whenever it comes to early Chicago, I'd highly recommend to you to give "The Flock" a listen too ;-) ...
While the horns are certainly up front, what I really enjoy is the bass and guitar. It's a great track off of a great album.
Every instrument expertly played.. the horns were classically trained at DePaul university..Terry kath had a soulful voice on this track like ray Charles and could play guitar like jimi
fewer than 500 to go... I'm so excited!
Hi JP. DP from UK. This was my Introduction to the band. Listen appeared on a double album sampler of artists on the CBS record label (now part of Sony), called Fill Your Head With Rock, and it was the first time we had heard so many bands and singers (like Laura Nyro, Steamhammer, Argent, Taj Mahal, Al Stewart as well as Chicago). It's a rocker, but there's so much musical variety crammed into three minutes. Great reaction as usual, Justin.
All the compilation albums, Columbia and Warner advertised made my mouth water as a teen. Sadly, I didn’t pull the trigger on these gems. Glad you did.
@@-davidolivares Compared with then, it is now just so easy to find out about new and unfamiliar bands. And of course we now also have great reaction channels like Justin's.
The first album had some towering pop songs in 'Does Anybody Really Know What Time it Is?', 'Beginnings', and 'Questions 67 & 68'. Even 'Introduction' with it's length and changes tends to draw more attention than this simpler, shorter tune. But it does pack a punch in a short amount of time. Lamm nailed the vocal and maybe Pankow went a bit overboard with the horn arrangement, but it is a short, simple banger that gets overshadowed because of all the great content on this record.
Happy Happy, Justin! 🎉
I think Listen is my 3rd favorite track after Poem 58 and Introduction. South California Purples would be my 4th favorite.
Good hafternoon J.
Stereo speakers, sun shining in study
Beneficial day at work
and now a fab groove and horns to match
60s music with Hattitude and Stomp. Very Very Good. U listenin Bobsi? Yeah I'm a-listenin. Great Guitar. Noted.
An underrated iconic genius of a debut album. Overused terms that are applicable here.
Also, one of my first albums ,Chicago 1&2 together with the Live Album by Grand Funk Railroad. I was in double heaven.
Beavis: He said, "this is one horny song", huh huh. Butthead: Uh huh, uh huh huh, that's cool.
Great tune! Great band!
From the earliest days of my album collection this band had everything I could ever want in once place from an American band, and leading for me, the horns and the bass. I still prize this music for the pleasure it gives me. That's not to deny the impact on me of some good driving rock and a great storyline.
Beavis:. He said, this is one horny song', huh huh
Butthead:. Uh huh uh huh huh, that's cool.
I'm all ears!!! This is one of the few albums that has consistently, make it to my turntable, and has since my first purchase in 1970.(2 replacement copies at this point!). In my humble opinion the most consistent and best debut effort, by a newbie. "ME so horny" I've loved it long time! Ooorah! Semper Fi. Peace & Love.
You can’t handle the truth, this is the sh!t!
needs more cowbell? 😉
Justin since you enjoy Chicago, treat yourself and listen to Chase. Their horn section blows Chicago away imo. If you want suggestions let me know. Even if you don't react to it, treat yourself to this group
What happened to them? Are they still around?
Lololololololololololololol……what a crappy band……lolololololololol.
@@Lightmane they died in a plane crash before I was going to see them live. My older brother got to see them though.
@@stephaniethurmer5370 wow. How sad
@@Lightmane I believe this was all around the time of Skynrd, Jim Croce, and a few others going down in crashes. It was a bad couple of years for music
Not my favorite Chicago tune. The song has a lot of the band's normal musical components. I couldn't tell you how to make it better. My foot was stomping along in the first 5 seconds regardless. The song has drive.
