Does anybody really know how good Nick and Lex's channel is? With selections like this. it just gets better and better. Please guys, more Chicago.
Written and sung by keyboardist Robert Lamm, who is now 78, and is one of three original Chicago members still with the band. The others are James Pankow (trombone) and Lee Loughnane (trumpet).
My older brother got me hooked on Chicago, and because of that, "I feel stronger everyday".😁

Nice to have an in-house guide who is also a subscriber. Pretty cool. Because of the easy listening crap this band peddled in the 80’s, it is easy to overlook how great a band they were from their inception through the mid 70’s. Keyboardist Robert Lamm was their best songwriter back then, with Peter and Terry providing the backup vocals. I’m sure Greybeard will agree that there is something fascinating about watching someone listen to a song for the first time that you’ve known your whole life, which is why reaction channels are so successful. I only hope this music reaches more younger viewers.

This is a great song. Big radio hit back in the day. Saw them many times, wonderful live band. Buffalo (Rich Stadium) was THE place for summer concerts. In 1975 Chicago and the Doobie Brothers played same day. Doobies were great. Rocked the place. Then Chicago, they were great too came on and some very loud Doobie fans were heckling Chicago( get off the stage, you suck, bring back Doobies). Pissed me off bc both were superstar bands and I loved both. I don't know why I'm telling you this lol. Memories..

As with most things Chicago, context is everything. In the late 60's early 70's AM radio ruled popular music. If you wanted a hit, it had to get mainstream AM airplay. Which also meant your song had to be between 3 minutes and 3 1/2 minutes. Chicago didn't have a "hit" until "Make Me Smile" off Chicago II. When it became a hit, their producer, James William Guercio, went back into the studio and edited this song, "Beginnings" and "questions 67 or 68" down to fit. The edits were brutal (I'm sure you can guess which part of "Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is? got edited out) but effective, and suddenly Chicago had multiple songs in the Top 40. They had always been the darlings of college FM radio stations, and combined with their newfound popular exposure, they were off to the races.

Musically there is another play on the title in that the piano intro has essentially no meter and then when the band kicks in goes through various meters including 5/8 and 6/8 (i.e. "does anybody know what "time signature" this song is in?) before settling into 4/4.

This was the bands debut double album and their name at that time was The Chicago Transit Authority, not 'Chicago'. They were threatened with legal action by the real CTA so they truncated the name to 'Chicago' on follow-up recordings. The album was recorded in January 1969 and released with a street date of April 28, 1969, so this isn't 1970s music.

Their Live at Tanglewood concert video from 1970 would be a good and fun full album reaction! It starts with Introduction and runs through highlights from their first two albums, including a live version of 25 or 6 to 4 that is simply amazing. I would be happy to subsidize it but your Buy Me Coffees are always sold out, 😢 ☕️ I did manage to get in one time and request Poem 58. 🎸🎸🎸🔥🔥

You have to understand the context in which this album was released. This was the period when popular rock was not just abandoning the old music styles, it was renouncing them. Acid rock was becoming the rage. The here came Chicago Transit Authority and released an album that was as much pretty "old school" jazz as it was modern rock--and, to many people's surprise--it took off. Most all of the CTA band was well musically schooled in multiple genres. While most rock bands of the era--if they used instruments other than guitars, bass, keyboards, and drums at all--used LA "session musicians" (many of them jazz musicians) for the instrumental backing. CTA did their own--and did it well. Sadly, it didn't last. In subsequent albums, Chicago became more and more "commercial" and less jazz-oriented. This first album was their best, and--musically--they never hit that peak again, despite having a lot of popularity. As far as musical talent, CTA on this first album was likely one of the most talented of the era. And few other rock bands had the musical "chops" to successfully emulate their style

@@kbrewski1 The logo came from two designers, John Berg and Nick Fasciano. They designed so many iconic covers and motifs for Chicago.
I don't know if reissued vinyl matches the original releases on Columbia Records, but Chicago VI was printed intaglio style by The American Bank Note Company, and you can feel the raised lines. Chicago VII was embossed like leather, Chicago VIII had the look of an embroidered patch and came with a matching iron on transfer inside. The other covers like the metal of the eponymous second album were iconic in their own rights.

@@kbrewski1 Even though I didn't need IX the Greatest Hits album, it had a cool cover artwork! Didn't like that there were radio shortened versions rather than original album cuts on a couple tracks.

Looking forward to seeing your take on Chicago VII. It's a double LP, the last double with Terry Kath, who died not long after the release of Chicago XI.
Chicago VII is a heavily jazz influenced album, the entire side 1 and most of side 2 has no vocals. My favorite vocal track is Terry Kath's "Byblos". My GOD he was so smooth on that! No spoilers, but you hopefully enjoy that one!

@@debrabrabenec Byblos reminds me of a girl I loved in high school back in the late 70s. We were good friends but both were too shy to make a move. She's down in Florida with her husband and family, I'm in New York with my wife, but all these years later are still good friends. I think of her fondly when I hear Byblos, happy with my own life now and glad the friendship is there even though we lost touch for 20+ years when she found a husband and moved away after college.
