@@ICU2B4UDO The likely answer is that they got the song from a compilation album that came out in '75 when Martin was the producer called, *"History: America's Greatest Hits".* But Frank is correct, this song was originally released on their debut album called, "Homecoming", in '72, a couple of years before Martin had anything to do with the band. Dang, Nick really is a quickstudy...like Isaac Asimov, who once said: "I'm not a speed reader, I'm a speed understander."
Careful with America though. Their other big hit was found to be based on false information. You see, the horse did have a name, which was "Horsey". Moreover, people in the desert reportedly have no trouble remembering their name. This may mean something someday.
Like John Boulder, I mean Denver, America, the band, was more sweetness and light than dark and heavy. A slightly lightweight Eagles who themselves were not heavy but would probably never appear on Lawrence Welk, whereas it is possible that America might appear on there...and if there, then, by extension, Cracker Barrel: "More, nay, exactly as fun as a barrel of crackers!"
I saw America, the product, in a fairly small venue in wondrous Charlotte, with Foghat, and a half dozen decent bands. I also saw Floyd's "Dark Side" on the same stage earlier, so I have no memory of any of these localish bands. In retrospect, the name kept them from being too weird. "Mothers of Inventions" almost demands iconoclastic innovation. Peace y'all.

Finally moving back to the US, they had their first real success with the 1972 hit song, "A Horse With No Name". Towards the end of the 1970's Dan Peek left the band to do Contemporary Christian music. They had hit with songs like, Ventura Highway, Tinman, I Need You, Sister Golden Hair, and others. 1982 They had their last mainstream hit with, "You Can Do Magic".

Saw America my first year in college, the 74/75 school year. They were very good live. A lot of tasty acoustic guitar work and harmony vocals. I may be old but I got to see all the cool bands.

I remember in 1972, buying 'Hit Parade' magazine and seeing lyrics for this song and 'Sister Golden Hair. I was just about to turn 14yo. GREAT SUMMER MUSIC!!!

Hey Nick and Lex - you hit another one of my favorite songs with Ventura Highway. Do you remember when I told you in the comment section for Woman In Chains, that certain songs have an interesting tonal quality? There is a sonic quality in the freshness of the acoustic guitar during Ventura Highway that grabs the brain and doesn't let go.
You caught this fact in the first few seconds of listening! Cool beans!
This is why your reaction videos mean so much to me. It's like watching myself introduce you to the music I love!
You are doing a wonderful job keeping all of us smiling.
    Ken

I really do like the band America. When I'm in the mood for pristine acoustic guitars, stellar harmonies, and incomprehensible lyrics, they are my go to.

A fun fact, America has covered a Beach Boys song " Caroline No" , from their "Pet Sounds"album. When the Beach Boys tour, sometimes members of America will get on stage and sing with them.

America were America air pilots sons based in UK. I saw them live in 1971 warming up for a band called Family. They were really good live too. Their first album was produced by Paul Samwell Smith famous for producing Cat Stevens and being in The Yardbirds. He also had a band called Box Of Frogs

And this is their masterpiece album, in my opinion. The America album to have, all the songs are great like this one. An American classic.

Play one or two of your favorite America tunes to you kids - or nephews, nieces or grandchildren - like, "I Need You," "Ventura Highway" or something, and you'll turn them into fans of "only the best" music, and change the trajectory of their lives!

First heard America when this came out. Such a great song but their library is full of great tunes. You should bookend their catalog and do Magic from 80s. Gracias mis amigos hermosos..
