  • This is a reaction video to Chicago performing "South California Purples" from the "Chicago Transit Authority" album. This song is a super hard rock blues number with an excellent keyboard solo, freakout guitar solo and little bit of The Beatles.

You didn’t buy the CTA Album right away ? Bought this Album immediately. Terry Kath is arguably the most underrated guitarist in post 50’s music. It is a my favorite Chicago Album that has numerous great songs on the Album and South Carolina Purple one of those…maybe my favorite. They layered that intro with perfection ! Every musician show their raw talent in Spades. Love Chicago and will be going to see Leonid and Friends live in Milwaukees September 2024. Great Song !

Please remember that this great album was a world wide smash that achieved Platinum status in most rock and pop buying markets in countries around the world. It took a while for this great album to catch on here in the USA for some reason.

"Introduction" is my favorite, showcases the instrumental genius of the band.

Love the first record too! It's their brilliant blueprint. A couple of live versions are circulating on you tube these days. One is the live alternate version from The 1971 Carnegie Hall concert. I think it surfaced following the release last fall of the 50th anniversary edition. It's listed as "South California Purple." 😳😒That's magnificent, as is another performance I just heard. It's from the Live Peace In Toronto concert in the autumn of 1969 and it's also brilliant. My only trouble is with the video from the post which opts to include photos of later editions of the band running up to almost the present day. He should have used original 1969 photos, preferably from the performance itself. That was my only beef. They're worth checking out, particularly the Toronto recording.

On that same debut album, you MUST go for "Poem 58". Terry Kath RIPS it on guitar, backed by Danny Seraphine on drums and Peter Cetera on bass for the opening almost five minutes instrumental section of the 9-minute track. Some of the funkiest stuff you'll hear.
Jimi Hendrix saw them playing at the Whisky A Go-Go in LA and told them, "You guys have a horn section that sounds like one set of lungs and a guitar player that's better than me!" . "Poem 58" will confirm for you Hendrix was right in his assessment of Terry Kath.

Hi Craig W ... Poem 58 is definitely another great Terry solo. The first album is such a great hard rocker while Chicago II they lightened their sound. CTA and 7 are my favorites. Rock on ... 😎✌

@@drivingwithtodd1781 Terry Kath is known for his hard rocking, but his love ballad "Byblos" on VII is one of my all time favorite TK tracks Great voice and fantastic guitar. That song makes me think of my high school first love.

No wonder Jimi, said Terry was better than him, and JImi took them to Europe to open for him.
