It's just amazing to me how great Chicago was on every level in the early years. Their arrangements, instrumentation, song writing, all second to none. The 70s was a treasure trove of masterful musicians, song writers, and improvisationalists. So sad how much we've regressed.

Early Chicago with Terry Kath was fire. Kath played rhythm and lead guitar for the group. And Kath could make the guitar laugh. If you haven't already check out their cover of "I'm a Man" live at Tanglewood.

I remember listening to this album as a junior high kid and I still love listening to it in my mid 60’s.

Peter Cetera's bass playing on "Liberation" is masterful.

Terry Kath was from Mars. He will never be replaced. R. I. P., Your musical genus is sorely missed.

After the stop time in Liberation at 35:43, the band goes into a slow tempo. Very "Hendrix like" guitar from Terry, especially here.

Finally! You get to hear the best and one of the first fusion albums! And yes, Jimi said Terry K was GREAT!

Thank you STB for the reaction! The whole first CTA album is great and I wanted to submit an album reaction, but it is long...their first 3 albums are all double albums...so much musicality and creativity at the time. Terry Kath was actually considered the band leader by the other members. He basically was the conductor, keeping them on time...you can see that throughout the Tanglewood live concert video. In addition to his stellar rhythm and lead guitar work, his vocals with that soulful baritone voice are the sound of a Ray Charles. Yes, they could have been bigger, but I would add many of us remember they have hit after hit and lots of their songs permeated the airwaves in the 1970's. They are a rare combination of talent, and they have many more hits and great albums to cover during the Terry Kath era. I hope your channel has more Chicago content in the future, to do them justice. I have plans for more Chicago songs to request, but there are so many, I hope others may have some great recommendations as well. Here is what STB has covered with Chicago so far, starting with quad 211, link here: czcams.com/video/-MxoU2CbIIA/video.html He also reacted to a live 1969 version of "I'm a Man," from Feb. 2019, which was his first Chicago reaction. We need to give him more Chicago content! Lol!

Not sure how much bigger they could have been. Between them the Eagles, and maybe the Doobie Brothers they were about as big as 70's American bands got. I think STB would really like a combo of Dialogues I and II, Lowdown, A Hit by Varese & Prelude to Aire/Aire (with my favorite Kath solo) as a quad.

As you assumed, Terry Kath had a huge profile with the group. Arguably as significant a front man as they had though cases can be made for Robert Lamm and Peter Cetera as they were the lead vocalists on most of early Chicago hits. But Kath was larger than life figure who could wail on guitar and belt out a lead rocker vocal in a grittier fashion neither Cetera or Lamm could comparably tackle.

Yes, Hendricks-esque. Between the hard guitar riffs, Kath's vocals it vibes of Jimmy. Filthy, funky rock.
