MY NEIGHBOR TOTORO Is in the Wrong Order - Exploring Time in Miyazaki's Timeless Classic

- For its 35th anniversary, I revisit Miyazaki’s classic My Neighbor Totoro and dissect its timeline as best I can, and how that affects what we see on screen. From the year the film is set, to the time elapsed, and how each character perceives that time passing by. Along the way I discovered that there’s potentially a scene or two from the original cut that was released out of order.

I think your theory is both plausible and likely, he probably felt the change was needed after viewing a work print of the film during the editing process.
Great video, and thank you for letting me know that the 58th anniversary of my birth is also the 35th anniversary of "My Neighbor Totoro" and "Grave of the Fireflies" release. Next year I will have to try that double feature.
That’s my thought exactly. Chronologically the film worked, just a certain scene or two needed to be earlier.

It is one of the first anime movies I watched as a teenager, it helped me understand the concept of time, and taught me to be patient. A true classic that will stand the test of time. Do you think you will do more on Studio Ghibi’s movies? If yes, I suggest spirited away

Fun trivia: The Japanese voice actor for Tatsuo is Itoi Shigesato, most widely known as the director of the Earthbound/Mother video game trilogy. Given those games' settings, themes, & story beats, his involvement here is almost TOO-perfect casting (even though this film came out before the first game in the trilogy).
I know nothing about the games honestly, so any connection or irony is lost on me sadly 😩
